Stuniverse
Monday 17th July 2023 Willington v Staveley Miners Welfare Friendly (4) Hall Lane Ground, Willington, Durham [For locals, note this is not the Willington, near Repton, Derbyshire] What I don't get is that when I was arranging friendly matches myself, the Staveley Miners Welfare Board wouldn't authorise travel costs to play at our local rivals Shirebrook Town, but when my backroom staff arrange friendlies the Board approve travel costs for a 121.5 mile trip to Durham????? Willington AFC play in the Northern League Division 2, Tier 10, so they are playing a tier below us. We're still without Angus Chapman and will, once again, go with a different 11 in both halves. It's still pre-season so I'm not going to read too much into this performance but, to be fair, it was disappointing in the first-half and very frustrating in the second-half. We struggled in the first-half. Not so much defensively, but going forward we struggled to create anything of note. We conceded a soft goal just before the break, one we really should have done better with. After the break we were much better and created a lot of chances. Trialist Lewis Salmon missed a great chance to equalise soon after the restart, then did score a few minutes later, when their goalkeeper was caught in no-man's land and Lewis looped a header over him. We really should have taken the lead but had a couple of attempts cleared off the line, plus a few more goalmouth scrambles where we weren't committed enough and Willington cleared their lines. Unfortunately, David Richardson (DC) and trialist Joel Torrance (GK) got in a muddle, both leaving the ball too each other, allowing their striker to nip in and score an easy goal. We went more attacking after that, but couldn't find the equaliser our second-half performance deserved. Stuniverse
Thursday 20th July 2023 Staveley Miners Welfare v Hartlepool United Friendly (5) We entertain League Two Hartlepool United at Inkersall Road, in the first of three home fixtures that are probably more about raising money for the football club than anything else. But Hartlepool United, followed by National League Notts County and National League North Alfreton Town will be good tests for the players. Angus Chapman has passed a fitness test and will be on the bench. It's good to see him back but, as we intend to give 11 players 90 minutes today, and another 11 players 90 minutes against Notts County next time out, we're hoping Angus can just rest on the bench today. Charlie Rutt and Mitchell George have looked tired in training so we'll have to keep a close eye on them as they may not last the full match. -- This is why we love football, isn't it? Last time out we lost to Willington AFC who play a tier below us and, today, we beat Hartlepool United who are full-time professionals and play five tiers above us. I thought we were good value for the win as well. D'Andre Wainwright scored the only goal after two minutes, following a brilliant team move down the left that involved Ben Midgley, Sonny Best, Sam Sharrock-Peplow and Mitchell George with the assist. We created more good chances after that. We also defended very well and I was delighted with the clean sheet. Trialist goalkeeper, Ollie Battersby, showed why he's impressed us with some fine saves. We've offered Ollie a deal but expect he'll have other offers. It was great to see a 594 attendance inside Inkersall Road and I hope the 375 Trojans in the crowd enjoyed it. Stuniverse
Friday 21st July 2023 Job Vacancies There are 11 managerial vacancies in the save currently and none of them are for local football clubs. -- For the first time, since I started this save, the job vacancies comfortably fit on one screen. When I looked on Day 1 of this save (game date: Monday 27th June 2022), there were over 250 managerial vacancies at Tier 10 alone. I have no idea how many overall job vacancies there were in the save as a whole. Edited January 22, 2023 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Saturday 22nd July 2023 Staveley Miners Welfare v Notts County Friendly (6) Last time out against Hartlepool United we gave 11 players the full 90 minutes. Today, against Notts County of the National League, who play four tiers above us, we plan on giving a different 11 players 90 minutes. Angus Chapman is still recovering from an ankle problem. We'll start Angus, but he may not last the distance. -- Wow! What an incredible game. In the first-half, we defended very well and kept Notts County out but didn't create much ourselves. After the break, we remained steadfast at the back and started to create some chances of our own. Angus Chapman was twice denied by brilliant saves from their goalkeeper. Trialist Ethan McLeod gave us an 85th minute lead. On 90 minutes, substitute Waide Fairhurst doubled our lead. I know it's only pre-season, but I'm so proud of the players. Hopefully the 491 Trojans in an Inkersall Road crowd of 673 enjoyed this one. Edited January 22, 2023 by Stuniverse

Stuniverse
Monday 24th July 2023 Staveley Miners Welfare sign Voase Ben Voase joins us as a Breakthrough Prospect but I think he can put more pressure on our #1 goalkeeper Sam Kellett at the moment than our other Breakthrough Prospect Sam Agius. Stuniverse
Friday 28th July 2023 Staveley Miners Welfare sign another goalkeeper Sam Kellett was our first-choice goalkeeper for the second half of last season and I've seen nothing in pre-season to suggest he shouldn't be our number one. But Ollie Battersby really impressed us on trial, and was magnificent during our 1-0 victory over Hartlepool United, so it was a no-brainer to offer him a deal. Ollie is more than good enough to be our number one so he'll keep Sam on his toes. I know it'll be difficult to keep both Sam and Ollie happy but, as Staveley Miners Welfare manager, I know I have two goalkeepers more than good enough to be our number one with two very good Breakthrough Prospects waiting in the wings. I'm very happy with our strength in depth in the goalkeeping department. Edited January 22, 2023 by Stuniverse

Stuniverse
Saturday 28th July 2023 Stuniverse signs yet another goalkeeper for Staveley MW Honestly, with Sam Kellett and Ollie Battersby competing to be our number one goalkeeper, plus Ben Voase and Sam Agius as Breakthrough Prospects, I wasn't looking to sign another goalkeeper. Stuniverse
Saturday 29th July 2023 Staveley Miners Welfare v Alfreton Town Friendly (7) We couldn't get Nathan Waterston and Angus Chapman through 90 minutes last time out against Notts County so they'll both start against Vanarama National League North Alfreton Town today. I'm very happy with the squad we've assembled so far, and the strength in depth, and we only have one trialist, Aaron Atkinson, with us at the moment. We like Aaron, and have offered him a deal, so Aaron will also start today. A couple of recent signings, Sam Waller and Tom Parkinson, also start. The rest of the team will be players who haven't played much so far this pre-season. -- This was always going to be a tough game for us against an Alfreton Town team who play three tiers above us. Defensively, we struggled against their big, strong front two of Matt Rhead and Tom Denton, who both scored against us. But we battled hard, pushed Alfreton all the way, and twice equalised. Lamin Jagne made it 1-1 when he headed in Tom Parkinson's free-kick. Angus Chapman made it 2-2 from the penalty spot, after Ryan Charnley had been shoved in the penalty area. We probably could've pushed Angus through the full game but, on pre-game medical advice, we took him off after 66 minutes. Stuniverse
Wednesday 2nd August 2023 AFC Blackpool v Staveley Miners Welfare Friendly (8) We have two pre-season friendlies left to play before the serious, competitive matches start. Today we travel to AFC Blackpool who play in the North West Counties League Division 1 North, in Tier 10, a level below us. For this match, and the Burscough game on Saturday, we'll be approaching them as if they were competitive games. Our medical team still think we'll only get an hour out of Angus Chapman so we'll probably put him on the bench with a view to seeing if we can give him playing time in the second-half, with a view to him possibly starting against Burscough. Mechanics Ground, Blackpool -- We looked sharp and ready for the season today. D'Andre Wainwright scored a hat-trick, two before the break, one after and I thought we looked comfortable throughout. Ryan Barr scored a late consolation for AFC Blackpool - probably the best goal anybody has scored against us, a 25-yard thunderbolt that went in off the underside of the bar and gave Sam Waller no chance.
Stuniverse
Saturday 5th August 2023 Staveley Miners Welfare v Burscough Friendly (9) We finish off our pre-season by entertaining Burscough of the North West Counties League Premier Division. Like us, Burscough play at Tier 9. We're going to start Angus Chapman today and, based on medical advice, replace him after about 75 minutes. Charlie Rutt (DC) and Jake Wallace (DR) are looking tired after Wednesday's game against AFC Blackpool so they'll be on the bench. Inkersall Road, Staveley. -- We wanted to round off our pre-season with a win in front of our Trojans fans at Inkersall Road but, unfortunately, it wasn't to be. I thought we should have won and, nine times out of ten that performance gets us the win but, not today. Angus Chapman gave us an early 4th minute lead and we created a lot more chances after that, testing both their first-half and second-half goalkeepers far more than they tested Sam Waller and Ollie Battersby (last 28 minutes), but we couldn't score a second goal. Burscough equalised just before the half hour mark, with a rare attack, when we switched off and didn't pick up a far post runner. We changed to an Attacking mentality for the last 20 minutes but still couldn't find a second goal. That's it for pre-season. Bring on the competitive season. And to get a win, away from home, that's very, very special. I thought we deserved the win, having more possession and creating a lot more chances than Padiham. Mitchell George gave us an early lead. We've been looking forward to this moment since we clinched promotion at the end of last season. We came through our 3-1 FA Cup win at Padiham unscathed so we still have an empty medical room. Stuniverse
Saturday 19th August 2023 Staveley Miners Welfare v Barton Town Northern Counties East League Premier Division (1) Inkersall Road, Staveley -- We wanted to get off to a winning start in front of our own Trojans fans at Inkersall Road and we're delighted we could do just that. Our victory was well deserved as we controlled the game from start to finish. Ben Midgley gave us a seventh minute lead with a 25-yard volley. Mitchell George made it 2-0 after 12 minutes. Stuniverse
Saturday 26th August 2023 Hucknall Town v Staveley Miners Welfare FA Cup Preliminary Round Watnall Road, Hucknall -- We're taking the FA Cup very seriously. We know we're not going to win the whole thing but it has the potential to be a real money spinner for us. Each round we can progress through, the more money we can make and that's vital for a football club like Staveley Miners Welfare. So we're delighted to have made the short trip to Hucknall Town, not one of our traditional rivals but a local club none-the-less, and win through to the next round. The game started off tight, and even, with chances at both ends. But then we blew them away with three goals in six minutes midway through the first-half. A hat-trick for Mitchell George, all three assisted by D'Andre Wainwright. Sonny Bell made it 4-0 after the break. The clean sheet would've been nice, but Filozofe Mabete gave away a needless penalty late on and Sam Waller was unable to prevent Hucknall scoring a consolation goal from the spot. Stuniverse
Wednesday 30th August 2023 Golcar United v Staveley Miners Welfare Northern Counties East League Premier Division Skye Direct Arena, Golcar -- We won, and obviously I'm pleased about that, but I'm far from happy. At 3-0 and 5-1 up, we should have comfortably won this one and not been hanging on at 5-4 at the death. Strikers Mitchell George and D'Andre Wainwright both scored. Our captain Tom Bell got his first goal for the club from 20 yards. 3-0 at half-time and looking comfortable, we really should have seen the second-half out comfortably. After they pulled one back, Sonny Best collected the ball outside our own penalty area, ran two-thirds the length of the pitch, before coolly scoring to make it 4-1 with 25 minutes remaining. Then Angus Chapman opened his account for Staveley Miners Welfare from the penalty spot. 5-1 with 16 minutes to go. What happened after that, conceding three goals, really was unacceptable, although I do have to give credit to Golcar United for never giving up. We won, and I'm sure it was exciting for the neutrals, but I don't want any more exciting games like that.
