We kick-off our 2024/25 campaign today when we host Avro in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round.

Having been to the Raygar Stadium myself as a supporter, I love the atmosphere here and I've been looking forward to managing Belper Town here in competitive games.

Avro play in the North West Counties League Premier Division (Tier 9), which is a level below us.

Our only absentee is Dajaune Brown, who will be missing for a few more weeks.

Having only signed this morning, Zion Dixon won't feature today as we don't want to rush him in before he's had a chance to train with us and get to know the other players.

The FA Cup allows us the luxury of seven substitutes, instead of the five we get to name in the Northern Premier League Division 1 East.

We're delighted to have won today and progressed to the next round of the FA Cup.

10 of the starting 11 made their Belper Town debuts today as did two of the three subs we used.

We were very comfortable I thought, had more possession than Avro, created a lot more chances than they did, but we didn't get anywhere enough on target or work their goalkeeper enough.

Avro will probably say the 48th minute sending off changed the game. I guess it didn't help them, and they had to change things around, but I felt we were already on top and, even without the red card, it was only a matter of time until we scored.

In the end, two headers saw us through to victory.

Zack Clarke headed in Lewis Farmer's cross and D'Andre Wainwright headed home Tom Bell's cross.

Oh, and hearing The Nailers fans singing, "We all follow a yellow football team, a yellow football team, a yellow football team!" to the tune of The Beatle's "Yellow Submarine" was something special.

Northern Premier League Division 1 East

01_Cleethorpes_preview1.png.e128cfaf9983c8787f7808f23909346a.png

After a 2-0 victory over Avro in the FA Cup we now kick-off our Northern Premier League Division 1 East campaign by hosting Cleethorpes Town.

Last season, Cleethorpes Town finished 11th (out of 20) so they'll present a test to our promotion winning credentials.

01_Cleethorpes_injury1.png.dd63606e473d9e7a32010e3f2e73755b.png

Dajaune Brown remains some way off a return.

Everybody else has looked lively in training so we'll go with an unchanged starting 11.

We can only name five subs in the league so Kieran Smith and Nathan Waterston are the unfortunate ones who miss out.

We're delighted to have opened our league account with a win because, for a long time, in a hard fought, fairly even game, that didn't look like it would be the case.

Cleethorpes took the lead on 37 minutes with the ultimate long ball, hit high and long by their goalkeeper, their striker, Fuller, then ran through and scored.

The players showed great spirit though and Zack Clarke equalised for us just before half-time.

I thought we were really good today. Ossett United finished 9th in this division last season so they're no mugs.

Our players put in a near perfect away performance. We quietened the crowd, dominated possession, and created a lot more chances than Ossett did.

D'Andre Wainwright scored two goals in the opening 33 minutes and then, in first-half added-on time, the foot of the post denied him his hat-trick, but Ossett scrambled it away, Sonny Best crossed it in from the left and, with a stooping header, D'Andre Wainwright completed his first-half hat-trick.

Ossett United started the second-half brightly and pulled one back after 47 minutes with a towering header.

But we defended resolutely after that and saw the game out for a comfortable win.

Winterton Rangers play in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division (Tier 9), the division we won with Staveley Miners Welfare last season, so they play a level below us.

But Winterton Rangers have started the season with two league wins, 5-1 and 3-2, plus a 2-1 win in the FA Cup, so we won't be underestimating them.

FACPR_Winterton_fitness.png.99f78a79b167c43df75ccbf6c171b71a.png

It's still too early to bring Dajaune Brown into a matchday squad after his ankle injury.

FACPR_Winterton_tired.png.0b548edf61c3ae0be957fb6ed4adccb8.png

Tom Bell (MC) and Lewis Farmer (MR) are looking a bit tired so I'm going to bring Farren Simons and Nathan Waterston in for them.

Otherwise we're unchanged.

As we can name seven subs in the FA Cup, I've added Leigh Whelan and Zion Dixon to the bench.

This was as comprehensive an away performance as you're likely to see and I'm so proud of the players.

D'Andre Wainwright scored a brace.

Zack Clarke went one better and scored a hat-trick.

Zion Dixon, on as a sub for his debut, rounded the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into an empty net.

Our only real blemish came on 54 minutes when Winterton scored a consolation goal.

But it would be churlish of me to complain after a 6-1 away win.

03_StocksbridgePS_report2.png.8b391ec162fa918bc4970ba78e4d8744.png

This was one of those games where we had to stay patient, believe in what we have worked on in training and, fortunately, our patience was rewarded.

We had by far the better of the game. Dominating possession, creating far more chances than Stocksbridge, creating much better chances than them. Our xG was close to 3.5.

But, for all of that, we only had one goal, scored by D'Andre Wainwright, to show for it by the break.

03_StocksbridgePS_tactics1.png.17a81bdaa9f9b84db421f81bc7413dc9.png

We were slow out of the blocks after the restart, gave away a needless free-kick, failed to pick up Scott at the far post and he headed in the free-kick for their equaliser.

On the hour mark, we made a couple of substitutions and went more Attacking.

03_StocksbridgePS_tactics2.png.4da29c4b312816b6f5963ab0c4dadeb1.png

After that it was all us. We created at least half a dozen decent chances but we either headed over, shot wide, or Sam Kellett, a goalkeeper who played for me at Staveley Miners Welfare, denied us with a couple of stunning saves.

Just as we thought time was running out, D'Andre Wainwright made it 2-1 with a long-range effort that flew into the bottom corner.

I know it's very early in the season, this is only our fourth league game, but our home game against Matlock Town is already looking massive.

Not only are we local rivals, not only are we joint favourites with the bookies to win the Northern Premier League Division 1 East, but we've both started the season with three league wins out of three.

So it's 2nd against 1st between local rivals.

Oh well, a nil-nil draw at home to Matlock Town. At least we didn't lose.

I'd like to say this was one of those goalless draws where both teams cancelled each other out.

But it wasn't like that at all.

This was a frenetic game, with chances at both end, but neither of us had our shooting boots on and both goalkeepers had easy afternoons.

03_Matlock_tactics1.png.3f6ae1153be5e7576b78237479aaac2c.png

Tom Bell had to go off after eight minutes with a bruised ankle.

03_Matlock_injury.png.d566492b9e1f0af6a6bdd76f16eb803a.png

I think its fair to say both Matlock and us huffed and puffed, worked hard, but didn't do enough to score.

A draw was probably a fair result.

We had to work hard for this win, credit to Brighouse Town who made it very difficult for us today.

I thought we had the better of the first-half but we couldn't score.

05_Brighouse_tactics1.png.bc44af87491b543193322f77abaca4d2.png

We started the second-half brightly and, in a crowded penalty area, Zack Clarke went down and the referee pointed to the spot.

Zack Clarke picked himself up and gave us the lead with his spot-kick.

We created more chances but couldn't add a second goal.

Then, on 70 minutes, Brighouse Town equalised with a fierce shot.

Bolton Makwedza found himself struggling with his knee and, with Steven Johnson-Fikula already on for Charlie Rutt, we had to bring Leigh Whelan on and play him out of position in central-defence.

We also took the opportunity to go more Attacking.

05_Brighouse_tactics2.png.4fd506cca3243086b40f6117b93fd32b.png

On 76 minutes, Brighouse Town took the lead with a scintillating bicycle kick from Gibbons.

But this Belper Town team has a lot of spirit, character and determination.

Substitute Dajaune Brown equalised on 82 minutes.

Zack Clarke put us 3-2 up on 86 minutes before completing his hat-trick on 89 minutes.

I'm so proud of the players after their comeback from 2-1 down after 76 minutes to win 4-2.

The amount of detail and time put into each post is ridiculous - in a good way.  It's only taken me about a month to read through this, but it's been exceptional. I'm here trying to find my way and you're running circles around the smaller leagues.  Between you and Punch, your commitment is exceptional.

Thanks, @Blarney. It is time-consuming but I enjoy it. It's worth it for the interaction with people like yourself who read my thread.

FA Cup First Qualifying Round

We beat Cleethorpes Town 3-1 on the opening day of the Northern Premier League Division 1 East season but that won't mean anything at the Linden Club today.

In fact, it could count against us as I'm sure Cleethorpes Town will have a thing or two to prove against us.

FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_lgTab.png.4984b746d249e95da7da386c0d6992f3.png

Bolton Makwedza's knee problem against Brighouse Town turned out to be nothing serious, which is a relief, and Tom Bell is fit to play as well.

FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_fitness.png.7bddf032c34a36621cc594a233154369.png

Lewis Farmer was looking a little tired in training so Nathan Waterston comes in for him, and I'm giving Steven Johnson-Fikula a start to rest Bolton Makwedza's legs.

FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_tired.png.17a4bb1a8c612d5ab116947b745d3875.png

I'm bringing Kane Patterson back into the starting 11 because, captain or not, Kieran Smith had a poor game against Brighouse Town. Kane has been moaning to me about a lack of playing time so it's only fair; Kieran needs to up his game if he wants to hold down a regular starting place and now he's given Kane an opportunity to make the right-back shirt his.

The two extra subs spots in the FA Cup go to Kieran Smith and Zion Dixon.

I don't think either of us wanted a draw, to be fair, but I guess a replay back home at Raygar Stadium, in front of The Nailers fans, is preferable to being knocked out.

It feels like we shot ourselves in the foot as both Cleethorpes Town goals were of our own making.

Not a lot happened in the first-half, if I'm honest. A few chances at both ends, but neither goalkeeper really troubled.

FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_tactics1.png.af460c4ddb61e9ed1f71852f824761be.png

Five minutes into the second-half, Steven Johnson-Fikula clears the ball straight to their right-winger and then, when the cross comes in, Steven completely misses his header and Cleethorpes take the lead.

I made a couple of subs after that and went more Attacking.

FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_tactics2.png.b9f6b00686fb3b8fa5a42f7d0697756e.png

Zack Clarke equalised for us on 58 minutes.

Lewis Farmer put us ahead on the hour mark with a great run, cutting inside, then hitting a shot across their goalkeeper and in-off-the-far-post.

We couldn't hold onto our 2-1 lead though.

Bolton Makwedza, who came on for Steven Johnson-Fikula, tripped their striker in the penalty area and Cleethorpes made it 2-2 from the spot.

The only other change is on the bench where Jacob Gratton replaces Zion Dixon.

We're pleased to have progressed to the next round of the FA Cup, of course we are, but we won't be celebrating tonight.

Rep7_FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_tactics1.png.58360929539ca795632186393a686924.png

Not after Lewis Farmer broke his leg in the 5th minute.

We won the cup-tie for Lewis but none of us feel like celebrating. Talking personally, I just feel sick.

Rep8_FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_injury1.png.ea6c37744e24e9d0075062666338d071.png

In a fairly even first-half, we got the advantage on 33 minutes when Kilheeney was shown a straight red for a bad tackle from behind on Leigh Whelan. To be honest, we were fortunate not to lose Leigh with a broken leg as well. It was a shocking challenge, lunging in from behind like that.

Rep9_FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_red.png.6178230a403a82b3e0cb7eabf7cac110.png

Nathan Waterston gave us a 38th minute lead.

We then lost Sonny Best to an ankle injury.

Rep10_FAC1QR_Cleethorpes_injury2.png.bc28654d96202c5fa5e03ca7a358049a.png

Cleethorpes equalised with a close range header in the 57th minute.

We brought Dajaune Brown on with 20 minutes to go and Dajaune won the game for us with goals in the 87th and 93rd minute.

I'm sorry if I seem down after an FA Cup win, but I'm saddened and sickened by Lewis Farmer's injury.

Lewis Farmer was our best right-winger by some way so when he sadly broke his leg I felt we needed to bring someone in.

If Lewis was only going to be out for a couple of months I may have waited to see if Nathan Waterston or Josh Woodcock could fill in.

But, as Lewis is likely to be out for the season, I decided we needed to act.

Welcome to Belper Town, Joel Vincent.

We travel to Shepshed Dynamo today. They are 8th and have only lost one league game so this will be a difficult game for us.

06_Shepshed_lgTab.png.179e20cdb29bbbe1bd2f96542368b21b.png

I'll be surprised if we see Lewis Farmer play again this season.

Tom Bell and Sonny Best have passed fitness tests and are available for selection.

New signing Joel Vincent hasn't had chance to train with us yet. I'm going to start Nathan Waterston on the right-wing today, due to Lewis Farmer's injury and Joel will be on the bench.

Tom Bell returns, after being rested in midweek, and Leigh Whelan will be on the bench.

Both my right-backs are struggling for form at the moment. I'm going to rotate again today with our captain Kieran Smith coming in for Kane Patterson.

The first-half was the Zack Clarke show as he bagged himself a first-half hat-trick, completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

After the break, substitute Dajaune Brown grabbed himself a brace.

Shepshed scored twice themselves to make it 3-1 and then a late consolation to make it 5-2.

I'm delighted with such a convincing away win but I'm mostly relieved that we got through the game with no injuries.

Very nice start to the season and your career at Belper Town, seems like the media was right labeling you guys as a top team in the division. Disappointed to see the injury to Farmer he was off to a red hot start hopefully Vincent can help bring in some of Farmer's production.

I know. I'm gutted for him. Not only was Lewis Farmer our best right-winger by some distance he was also, arguably, there or thereabouts our best player.
