I have been in a search, not a Holy Grail, but instead a long-term save throughout the FM 2024 process. This has proved to be a difficult task even though in general I enjoyed the game more than ten years ago when I played my last long-term save with Real Oviedo on FM 2015.

The reason why this has turned out to be difficult has often been due to my own doing. With Chelsea, I signed too many players and started winning, with Real Betis the big winter update messed up my whole gaming world and the latest save with Palermo was once again because I had signed too many players.

It is now time to start a save where I stay more true to myself and the gameplay I enjoy. And for this, I found a perfect club to begin with. This also aligns well with my thinking that I wasn’t yet done with Serie A which seems to be one of the most interesting big leagues in the world. There are a couple of real giants in the league and in total more or less 7 teams that can compete for the Scudetto.

THE STARTING POINT

When starting with Torino, I was really happy to see the objectives that the board set for me. In terms of squad building, the club wants to rely heavily on our youth academy which is at a good general level, yet still quite far away from the best clubs in Italy.

In terms of tactical approach, the board wants us to be both defensively solid and play attractive football. This for me means fluid counter-attacking football which is also the approach that I have always liked the most. Both in real life as well as in Football Manager.

This tactical approach from the board will allow me to revisit the world of 5-man defensive lines as well as use more generalist roles compared to the specialist that I used with Palermo. It will also allow me to build a different kind of club DNA which of course now will consist of totally different kinds of attributes that are suitable for counter-attacking football.

The starting post for this career update is a bit dull and doesn't provide a lot of information. In the next one though, I am going to be talking a bit more about our imaginary manager Claudio Marchisio, the squad, our tactical approach and squad-building, desired club DNA, pre-season, as well as rules and aims for this save game.

Nice I'm managing Torino in my save it's 2042 I joined them a season and a half ago they are still in the doldrums but I've got them running 2nd behind Napoli this season

Good luck with your save

Don Claudio

themanager.png.a72c068ac24f55fd93daa86c3b8ce77d.png

Having Claudio Marchisio as Torino's manager is something that isn’t realistic but in Football Manager, you start creating your world right after you have set your game up. This is why I for example like to play with the original mode where the winter transfers have already taken place in the summer and I have the final squad of the season in my hands right in the beginning.

Marchisio is one of my favorite Italian players of all time, along with Anrea Pirlo and Francesco Totti who both played a major part when looking up to professional players when I was still playing in my years of youth.

Claudio’s classiness and versatility as a player make him also an ideal candidate to be a manager. This is why I am a bit surprised that he hasn't at least yet taken the path of coaching in real life.

I started the managerial journey with a UEFA B coaching license and also with domestic-level footballing experience to add just a little bit more challenge in the beginning.

Key players

keyplayers(1).png.ec2848d3d9e45be32b2e7693b437897c.png

Ricardo Rodriguez | Raoul Bellanova | Duvan ZapataIvan Ilić | Samuele Ricci

I could have easily included all our three starting centre-backs (Alessandro Buengiorno & Perr Schuurs) here but as I wanted to include players from different positions, I only included Ricardo Rodríguez. I was a bit lucky with the Swiss as I asked our director of football to extend his contract on day one and just two days later Rodriguez came to me intending to explore his options after his contract expires at the end of the season. This demand did not apply to the already existing negotiations which saw the 30-year-old extending his stay at Torino until 2026.

In general, there is a real mix of experience in youth in this list. Atalanta loanee Duvan Zapata has seen it all in Serie A and at the age of 32 and with a quiet season behind him, his career is close to its sunset. The Colombian who scored 23 goals in his first season at Atalanta will be looking to make an impression and force his way back to the good books of his club. For Torino, it is an expensive loan deal as we will pay both his massive €89k a week salary as well as €100k a month whether he plays or not.

Ivan Ilic is a player that we look to be our main provider of goals while another 22-year-old Samuele Ricci will work as the engine of our defensive midfield, carrying and delivering the ball up to his more advanced companions. The young and promising midfielder has just signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.

Raoul Bellanova is a new arrival from Cagliari. The right wing-back is the fastest player in the club and he will have a vital role as a starter and perhaps even finisher of counter-attacking moves down the right-hand side.

Pietro Pellegri and Saba Sabonov are two of the main prospects within the club. The latter is a bit of a question mark for me as he has remained in Russia until the beginning of the starting season and that is something that I cannot take lightly from my players. In the under-20 squad, the main prospect is the Turkish midfielder Emirhan Ìlkhan who will spend the season on loan at Basaksehir.

Tactical approach

tactic.png.8ad79d95876e2ed11b2e38bc57594ee8.png

We have a fairly low defensive line and a goalkeeper whose strengths are in the penalty area’s aerial domination, I saw it as a logical choice to just use a standard goalkeeper instead of going to a fancy sweeper keeper which is more suitable in a possession-based system where the goalkeeper could also have his part in the build-up.

Our main strength within the team is the quality and versatility of our centre-backs and this was also something that I wanted to try and utilize in some way. The selection of roles is done both in terms of utilizing their skill sets as well as the positional play. It would be easy to go with a standard selection but I think this could be a better answer to our board’s desire to play entertaining football. I would also see this as a balanced selection where we don’t sacrifice too much of our defensive stability. This is all of course in theory and we are yet to see how this works in practice.

In midfielder, I could have easily gone with a destroyer and playmaker but I don’t want this to restrict our defenders in their attempt to try and find our more advanced players with a more direct approach which should also be one of the main outlets for our chance creation. With segundo volante and ball-winning midfielder, we have a runner and stay-at-home option available. The half-back in this instance is expected also to switch places with our libero to make us a bit harder to predict for the opposition.

As both of our currently fit left-sided wing-back options are right-footed, I wanted to make this role to cover the ground that the bombing forward Segundo Volante might leave in the midfield. This should also give our defenders an easy option in the midfield when we decide to build the play patiently. On the right-hand side, we, of course, want to allow Raul Bellanova the freedom to get forward as much as he wants. His player profile should already allow this without the role being attacking.

The supporting attacking midfielder should be the one dropping deep and linking our midfield together with the striker. The attacking version on the other hand is encouraged to make over and under-lapping runs inside the penalty area.

The striker role was the most difficult. Advanced forward would be a logical choice in a counter-attacking system but on the other hand, we are not going to be hitting the opposition on a break all the time and we might even control the events against some opponents. I think a complete forward is a good option here as he can both link up with our more advanced players as well as being our main goalscoring threat. This is also a role that is suitable for our best striker Duvan Zapata who really has no weaknesses and who also likes to play with his back towards the opposition goal.

With the team's instructions, I have once again chosen to keep things as simple as possible. A counter-attacking system in general doesn’t mean that you are going to be looking to attack quickly through the whole 90 minutes. It might even be that the buildups are slow and consist of short passes for 90% of the time and there are only a few quick breaks during the game as that is how things in general work. This is why I for example have kept the passing style mixed as I want my team to be able to decide what is the right kind of approach in a specific situation.

Team instructions

I have only added a few team instructions to encourage the team to look for a specific style of play when the opportunity arises. I want the team to mainly win the ball back deep in our half before launching a deadly counter-attack or slowing the play down if the opposition is well-organized.

As we have only played through the pre-season and managed just a handful of matches, this is just the moment where the real work with observing and tinkering starts. Friendlies can of course give you some kind of picture of the system but I trust the real games way more.

I also have another system in my back pocket which consists more of generalist roles and doesn’t rely a lot on positional play. This system is easy to take into use if and when the plan A turns out to be unsuccessful.

In the second system, our inverted wing-back turns into a regular wing-back in support duty, the centre-backs are regular ball-playing defenders and the second defensive midfielder is a ball-winning midfielder instead of a half-back. Otherwise, the tactic is the same.

As we have both Sanabria and Duvan Zapata to use when the season progresses, it is also possible that we will add a two-striker version with only one attacking midfielder. More about that perhaps in the mid-season update.

Club DNA

u.s.cittadipalermo(1).png.71757f3d644e48f81e5c7f8c2321c00b.png

The DNA in the club is of course closely tied to the style of play that we are playing. The main attributes that we will be looking at both within the squad, as well as in recruiting, are the following.

Concentration. Counter-attacking football is often about soaking pressure and avoiding hits. This means that there is no real room for errors and this is why concentration plays a key role in success.

Decisions. Successful counter-attacking is all about making the right choices at the right times. Whether it is a decision to try to break quickly or clear the ball instead of trying to play out the defense. Making the right choices plays a key role in a successful counter-attacking approach.

Pace. Speed kills, especially in a counter-attacking system. When hitting teams on a break, it is vital to be able to play balls behind the opposition defenders as well as be able to beat their players in one-against-one situations. Pacey players play a key role, especially in the transition phase where we are looking to catch the opposition off-guard.

Work-rate. Everybody needs to work hard in the pitch for us to be solid throughout the whole 90 minutes as well as being able to win the ball back in the right places. If I look for example my most advanced trio on the pitch, I expect both the striker and two attacking midfielders to do their part in terms of winning the ball back and getting us the turnarounds we need.

Teamwork. A successful defensive style of course demands a good team effort and this is why teamwork is a key attribute. We cannot afford to approach things in a way that for example, PSG did a couple of years ago when they had a clear teamwork unit as well as Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe minding their own business. All our players simply need to work as a unit

Determination is one of the most important singular attributes in football and I see this especially important in a style of play that demands grit and will to win.

General rules for the save

Sign players only when needed. The limit per season is three new signings in total (including summer and winter transfer windows). If the club loses one of the key players, mentioned above, these can be replaced with an immediate effect.

All the senior team signings should be also strongly based on stats: so data should be the one justifying the signings. If for example, we want to upgrade our left wing-back area, data should clearly show that our current option for that position is performing below the league average in that position. This is where the pizza charts, provided by the Mustermann skin, come in handy as we will be easily able to detect these statistics in just one view.

Invest most of the income in youth development. When the club has money to use, I want to invest most of this in improving our facilities, youth coaching, and recruitment. In the long term, I want Torino to become the best producer of Italian talent in the country. In about ten years, the starting eleven of Torino FC should consist mainly of our local players.

Sign mostly Italian players. The aim is to progressively grow the percentage of domestic players in the first-team. The aimed percentage is 80% and we should be able to reach this number in just a couple of seasons. The current number in first-team is 28% as 8 of 29 first-team players (including loaned in and out players) are Italians.

Our Director of Football will be taking care of all contract negotiations. This means that if he cannot agree to a new contract with an existing or a new player, then the deal is going to be off. The manager will not be able to interfere in these negotiations in any way.

The players that we sign should always come through our scouts’ recommendation. All the staff that we sign come through job adverts or staff recommendations. This means that we will not be using the player or staff search, which have both been deleted from my skin.

Winning trophies has no major significance in this save but as the story banner tells you: beating Juventus means everything. This means that we will be focusing a lot on the local derbies. What is even more important is that we will keep loyal to the rules that we have set: play counter-attacking football and rely on youth development instead of buying players. These two main cornerstones should keep the career update interesting, hopefully for years to come.

Aims for season one

  • Top-half finish in the league
  • Conceding less than 40 goals
  • Backroom staff overhaul
  • First improvements to our training and youth facilities
  • At least one good prospect in the yearly youth intake

The next update will be a mid-season update where we will be checking how we have been doing so far, how the tactical approach has evolved as well as some of the youth development results.

Thank you so much for all the comments so far! Please keep them coming and especially criticize my tactical approach if you see it suitable. :)

I think you made an error on the right centre back? The image says BPD on support?

  • El Payaso changed the title to [FM 2024] Torino FC - Sogna di battere la Juve

As mentioned elsewhere, you picked another of the Italian clubs that are under consideration for me if I chase some of that same culture.

No doubt also that the graphical presentation will make this extra appealing! Will be following for sure, best of luck.

Beautiful written and a fantastic idea for a good long term save.

Very interested to see your team shape when in and out of position. I like the idea of the rotations on the left hand side of the system. Could throw up some wicked combos when you counter.

I've read also your Palermo story, looking forward to this one. Keeping firgers crossed this save can stick!

If I may a minor suggestion/correction, in my opinion the title should say: Sogni di battere la Juve (not sogna).

You're probably right. I don't really know any Italian so I just relied on Google translate.

Thank you for all the kind words do far. I have only had the time to manage three games so far and it of course took me almost 7 hours to get through the pre-season so it is going slowly.

Will try to get something written next week!

AND SO IT BEGINS

1-3.png.3b64b7ebd035017b962a895cf2f51a2b.png

We started the season with a bit of an injury crisis as we were missing 5-6 players for the first two months of the season. The most significant was our goalkeeper Vanja Milenkovic-Savic who missed the whole of August and was covered by backup Luca Gemello who did well by having two clean sheets and having himself included in the Serie A team of the month with a 7.53 average rating. Much of this is thanks to his saved penalty against Fiorentina. We also qualified for the second round of Coppa Italia by beating Modena narrowly after being 3-0 up.

4-6.png.6324705e9bb97f7afb5e1adb983c420f.png

Our first big test came on match day 4 where we met the then-unbeaten Atalanta at Gewiss Stadium. Even though the stats tell you that our first defeat of the season was well-deserved, I think we did well as most of the home side’s shots came from the dodgy starting positions that set-pieces often have.

We were about 15 minutes away from getting a point and only succumbed to an Alessio Buengiorno bad forward pass which started a chain of errors and a Gianluca Scamacca goal.

7-9.png.058369a7cd781d32d05e279a4291d1cd.png

The season continued with a three-game stretch in just six days, during which we nullified 10-men Bologna, were less than a minute away from a clean sheet at Stadio Friuli, and lost Raoul Bellanova, Samuele Ricci, and Sasa Sabonov with rather long-term injuries:

sickbay.png.5adc7c8482b215884431f45b10c0b592.png

Our second big test was against Napoli. We started the game brightly by scoring the first goal of the season which was loyal to the style that we wanted to create the chances from:

counterattack.gif.f416226664eec3dd1b8f26e8f6d7e90e.gif

We won the ball back deep in our half, after which the segundo volante took the space away in possession. He then plays the ball to deep-dropping Duvan Zapata, who pulls out a couple of big errors from Napoli’s defense. He then links well with the attacking midfielders by releasing Nikola Vlasic to score his second of the season so far. A poorly defended situation from the Napoli defense, but this is what often happens in quick turn-overs.

The party was over soon as Victor Osimhen equalized from a hopeful deep cross, Ivan Ilíc got himself injured and Osimhen also buried his second chance of the game.

With Ilíc joining a long list of regular starters in the injured list for the next 3-4, the message was clear: we were running out of players and now practically forced to swap to a two-striker formation.

Before the October international break, we traveled to Genoa where we fought to a bore draw. The injury crisis continued with further two absentees as Duvan Zapata and Ricardo Rodríguez fell victim to the opposition’s rather ascetic approach to the game. Both would be out for a few weeks, yet we luckily had a few returning players to rely on in the upcoming games.

10-12.png.6b9451dd4b3c4928ac81127de6d3f74e.png

Another 0-0 draw followed in a home game against Sassuolo. In this game, the most intriguing battle was seen in our left flank where Jeremy Toljan and Domenico Berardi were trying to rip us apart with little success. The away team had 16 shots in total out of which only 1 was on target. We were mostly on the receiving end but came close to scoring in the 83rd minute when Adrien Tameze hit the bar.

October ended with a third consecutive clean sheet as well as a narrow 1-0 victory against Monza with Antonio Sanabria’s first goal of the season. It was a scrappy game where we limited the home side to three shots in total and 0.26 xG against our 6 and 0.54. We had three of our previously sidelined players back (Rodríguez, Zapata, and Ilic) but all of them were still far away from match fit. All of them got important minutes though and this allowed us to go back to our 1-striker formation.

The first quarter ended in the Coppa Italia Second Round where we were almost brushed aside by our rivals Sampdoria. A late goal and the first goal contribution of the season from Ivan Ilić saw us through. It was an important goal for the Serbian as was the brace for Pietro Pellegri

SERIEA10(1).png.9a0d285f0e7897706c8bef04d5308159.png

After the first fourth of the season has been played, we hold the best defensive record in the league and are still in the race for European qualification. These are still early days, of course, but at the moment things are looking fairly decent for us.

IN NUMBERS

  • 16th best team in terms of expected goals, which is to be expected
  • 3rd least loss of possession which means that we have been playing way too safe type of football
  • Most clean sheets in the league with 6 in total
  • 17th best in possession-won stats, 15th in interceptions, and 20th in fouls made ( only 62 in total)  in the league, which could mean that we could be more aggressive out of possession.
  • 10th in shots against with 98 in total.
  • Only 181 headers lost so far (18th in the league) which means we are an aerially strong team.
  • +4.13 in expected goals against which means that we have either been quite lucky or our goalkeepers have been doing their job.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Injuries have been mixing our deck of cards a lot so far this season and I could even consider us fairly unlucky in this aspect.

The biggest things that I have noticed so far are that we have been 100% loyal to our aims and gone defense first. This has also been showing in the scoreboard where our attacking play has been fairly tame as we haven’t yet found the counter-attacking phase that we have looked for.

It is fairly easy to see that our centre-backs are the best players on the team as we have made it difficult for all our opponents to break us down. The starting XI also in general is generally capable but then on the other hand during the dying minutes when you would need an impact to get the necessary goal, we don’t have any players to bring on to do it. This is especially evident in the wing-back and attacking midfield areas where we are lacking squad depth.

We have been given a small amount of money to play with in the upcoming January transfer window and it could well be used in a rotation option attacking midfielder whom we could throw in even as a starter if either Nikola Vlašić or Ivan Ilić is injured.

q8mNuTA.pngniRyNVX.png0qkbusH.png

Could someone like Manuel Mónaco fit the bill? Especially as Ilić’s performances have been quite dreadful so far.

TACTICAL TWEAKS SO FAR

  • We have gotten rid of the play out-of-defense instruction to encourage the counter-attacks happening.
  • Libero has been turned to a support role to offer more movement towards the midfield.
  • Half-back is now switched to an anchorman.
  • The attacking-minded attacking midfielder has been changed to a shadow striker to offer more firepower and movement up-front.
  • Both of the attacking midfielders have been instructed to roam, take more risks, and move into channels in an attempt to get more out of them.
  • In the upcoming games, we will be trying the get stuck in instruction.

I have been doing a huge amount of micro-managing so far and already used +20 hours in this save. The baseline for solid defending is already, so the thinking is now fully on how we could be more threatening and hit the opposition on a break.

Great work identifying weakness in the system this early on using the numbers to make clear concise decisions. I’ve always found pure counter attacking systems hard to create myself so am keen to see how you go about it.

I have had good luck with it in previous versions of the game but I have practically never used 3-man defenses before, so it takes time to get this working. What makes it even more difficult is the fact that even with comprehensice highlights our games are rather boring and lack highlights, so it is hard to pick obvious glaring errors in the system. Well, at least the defense is working like a charm at the moment.

Also as I am rarely using any opposition instructions, this is a real low-block tactic instead of putting maximum closing down through OI's which I have seem some people do when they claim that they're playing defensive low block. The ME has received a lot if criticism but I actually find it really good in terms of using totally different kinds of systems.

That's a good question. Have to wait and see. The tactic in general is still pretty muck work-in-process as I keep all the time picking up things that should or could be changed.

START OF THE SECOND QUARTER

OarKbp3.png

The start to the season had been fairly kind in terms of schedule but this is the moment where the tests really begin. We haven’t appeared in those two big games so far but especially the end of the year demands that we start doing it. The end of the year is going to be brutal but on the other hand, there is no better way to end the year than the first Derby della Mole of the season.

As the team was finally close to full health, injuries hit us twice again before the match against Cagliari as Ricardo Rodríguez caught a cold and Nikola Vlašić injured his ankle. This meant that we would be once again without the services of our two important players for the next weeks. It also means that it was again time to go back to a two-striker formation.

ALL THREE TACTICS IN USE

XkDLfZP.png

I have changed things around again in terms of team instructions as the team now has a clean slate in their hands. I have only left the counter-attacking option and space into space active. Otherwise, I want things to be simple and counter-attacks to happen naturally. All the changes that will happen from now on are in player instructions and are based on what happens during the matches.

The two striker formations allow us to utilize our talent up front in the form of Duván Zapata, Antonio Sanabria, and Pietro Pellergri, who are all good enough players to start games at this level.

Secondly, the two-striker formation should allow us to utilize the pass-into-space instruction better than before as more players should be attacking the spaces behind the opposition defense and the channels.

Thirdly this allows us to move one of our strikers to an attack duty as he should not be anymore that easily isolated as he has another striker close to him.

The deeper striker role is a bit challenging as the idea for the counter-attacking system is to have as many players under the ball as possible and ideally no players slacking from their defensive duties. I ended up using a pressing forward in a support duty instead of a deep-lying forward in the hope of seeing the second striker dropping to the midfield to help in our defensive efforts.

The 3-4-1-2 was my first idea here as it doesn’t change things much compared to the 3-4-2-1 but after thinking things over a bit longer, the 3-3-2-2 might even suit the team better. This even though it throws Vlašić out of his natural position.

In terms of defending, I did not see reasons to change anything. Whatever works, simply works.

NOVEMBER 2023

rCSl8vk.png

Two early goals saw us through the 19th-placed Cagliari who controlled the game based on stats. They had 7 shots and 0.54 xG in the first half where we played with our 3-4-1-2 system but we limited them to just two and 0.02 xG in the second half when changing to the system with a DM and two CMs.

Duván Zapata was the hero of the day with a beautiful effort from 20 meters out as well as setting up Karol Linety to a free shot at the edge of the penalty area. Ivan Ilić played his best game of the season in Serie A as the sole attacking midfielder (45min) and mezzala (45min).

A mixed bag of results during the match-day saw us climbing to the 5th position and just 3 points away from the Scudetto.

The match against Lazio was an odd one. During the first half, neither team did practically anything going forward and after the first 30 minutes, both teams only had one shot in total. At the start of the second, we had two good chances early on through Antonio Sanabria and Duván Zapata.

We then made two rare errors through our wingbacks losing their players in just minutes. We beat Lazio clearly in terms of xG but it was one of those days where the opposition simply converts their rather low-quality chances and takes the victory. We have done this to the opposition so often this season, that there isn’t too much room for complaining.

Errors continued pouring in early on against AC Milan who used their opportunities ruthlessly. Two goals from 0.54 xG meant that Vanja Milinkovic-Savic had at least momentarily lost his hero status at the club.

I wasn’t expecting anything to happen in the hope of a comeback as the visitors with now the best defensive record in the league were looking comfortable. Somehow it happened though as substitute Pietro Pellegri was twice able to beat the Milan defenders inside the penalty area twice beating the offside line narrowly.

u8snilJ.png

Our defensive record has deteriorated thanks to the last two games, but we are holding the joint best for the least goals conceded along with AC Milan.

Lazio’s Mauricio Sarri and Bologna’s Thiago Motta were the first two managers to be sacked this season. Elsewhere in Europe Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag faced the same fate.

DECEMBER 2023

4B2VmH2.png

A clean sheet against Hellas Verona was a priority number one which we bottled up with yet another poor defensive effort down the flanks and a goal from a low (0.07) xG opportunity from a narrow angle. While I cannot blame Vanja too much, the same probably doesn’t apply to the opposition manager Marco Baroni who saw their keeper Simone Perilli letting in two long-range shots, directed almost directly toward the middle.

We were the better team here and deserved the victory by limiting the opposition to 0.46 xG in total. What was even more delightful was Raoul Bellanova’s return to the lineup from the bench and immediately making an impact when he won the ball close to the halfway line and started the counter-attack that led to our third goal here:

gsMmKzD.gif

I decided to reintroduce the low block back to the system in the match against Empoli. It ended up working like a charm as we limited the home team to four shots and 0.10 xG in total. This, while being our effective selves in attack. Raoul Bellanova was again the man making the impact by winning the ball close to the halfway line before releasing Duván Zapata in our first goal.

The other two had a bit of FM 2007 vibes as they were produced with long balls from the keeper to our aerially capable Antonio Sanabria who was then able to bring other players in with good flick-on and hold-up play. This aspect has had much potential for us so far this season and it was nice to see it finally paying off also in terms of goals.

I fully expected Frosinone to be a difficult team to beat with a counter-attacking system at home as they were 14th in the league and definitely would settle for a draw. Thanks to some minor injuries and Karol Linetty being one yellow card away from a suspension, I decided to rotate a bit and bring in Sasa Sabonov to the defense and Gvidas Gineitis to the starting lineup. We once again limited the opposition to 0.36 xG, and four shots in total out of which zero troubled Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in his goal. Pietro Pellergri did what he does by scoring the only goal of the game from a scrappy penalty area chaos.

SGbpOZ9.png

A point and a clean sheet were more than enough for me at Stadio Olimpico against in-form AS Roma. We had three decent chances in the game to score but were otherwise the second-best team here. As the home side were playing with a deep 4-2-3-1, they were really able to put our wing-backs to a real test. Raoul Bellanova was the one occupied more against Spinazzola and Nicola Zalewski but luckily we were able to keep Romelu Lukaku quiet inside the penalty area and make blocks to the pull-backs made to their defensive midfielders. A 1.07 xG for the home side, along with 15 shots in total, out of which 3 were on-target, also meant that Vanja was doing a lot of work to earn his salary here.

Inter on the other hand were the first team to really take us to the school so far this season. We managed to punish them twice for their errors but were otherwise just trying to survive. Markus Thuram probably should have scored at least two or three here but luckily didn’t have his shooting boots on.

1FAmdNA.png

The first local derby between the two Turin sides was really a game to remember even though it ended in a 1-1 draw. The team responded really well after going 1-0 down early on from a poorly cleared corner kick.

We equalized before the half-hour mark through Antonio Sanabria’s only second goal of the season so far and should have been 2-1 through man of the match Ivan Ilic whose goal was overturned with the slightest of offside which was caused by Duván Zapata who had zero influence in the whole chance.

Juventus piled up more shots during the game but we had the better chances and 2.29 xG in total. Sadly we ran into an in-form Wojciech Szczęsny who made three real game-savers for his team. Juve mainly threatened us from corner kicks where Federico Gatti seemed to be in the end of every single cross.

Key stats

  • Shots: 18 - 14
  • On-target: 7 - 4
  • xG: 1.59 - 2.26
  • Possession: 56-44
  • Fouls: 12 - 14

Avoiding a defeat meant we would finish the year in a 7-game unbeaten run and above our rivals in the league table.

The managerial game has already gone crazy this season:

In terms of Torino, you can see that low-block has been the one for us to go.

Mid-block (3 games):

  • Goals scored: 5
  • Goals conceded: 5
  • Games won: 1
  • Games drawn: 1
  • Games lost: 1

Low-block (16 games):

  • Goals scored: 16
  • Goals conceded: 8
  • Games won: 7
  • Games drawn: 7
  • Games lost: 2

A FEW THOUGHTS ABOUT THE MIDFIELD

0pDMa9S.png

As the two-striker formation with a double pivot has lately become our first choice of tactics, I have had a few thoughts about the midfield roles.

Especially in games where we are narrowly leading at the end of the game, I have noticed that the attacking mentality of the opposition has opened us many chances to counter but players like Karol Linety and Adrian Tameza have not been able to pick the progressive pass that would lead to a counter-attack and a likely scoring chance. In the game against Frosinone, Tameze alone had three good chances to start a counter, which he failed to deliver.

This has made me think about moving Ivan Ilić permanently to the defensive midfielder position and try maybe the Regista role with him. In my opinion, this could be executed in both of the midfield triangle systems as we have hard-working midfielders and strikers ahead of him and three centre-backs to make sure that we have enough men behind the ball.

I think having a creative midfielder in a defensive midfielder position would help us in both building up slowly as well as starting the quick counters when the opportunity arises. Even though Regista is a highly creative role with a certain type of forward aggression too, he doesn’t come without any defensive responsibility. What I like about the Regista too is the fact that this is an Italian role which would definitely fit us like a glove. Along with already mentioned  Ivan Ilić, we also have Samuele Ricci, usually deployed as a segunda volante, capable of mastering this role.

The Regista should have a high amount of passing options available for him to feed as we would practically always have at least a few (3-5)  more advanced players ahead of him.

Other small changes

  • I have ditched the inverted wing-back and we now have a defensive minded wing-back on the left and a supporting complete wing-back on the right.
  • The striker roles are now defensive forward on support duty and attack duty. This purely down to the fact that these roles do not slack in defense and they do link-up and attack as well.
  • We have got rid of the libero and are now using wide centre-back, ball-playing defender, and a stopper centre-back roles in our defensive trio.

SEASONAL AIMS

xMbjS9O.png

We had clear season aims set up, and at the halfway mark, it is good to see how we are doing.

I think we have done well in terms of all of these. The upcoming youth intake is looking decent and if this prediction is true, we might be getting at least one good prospect who seems to be a goalkeeper.

Our defensive record is excellent and that has also influenced in our league position which is two notches above our predicted finish.

We have also managed to tie up many key contracts as Ricardo Rodríguez, Samuele Ricci, Perr Schuurs and Alessandro Buongiorno have all decided to extend their stays in Turin.

PLAYER PERFORMANCE

1FImmIb.png

See the full performance data from this link.

It’s really not a big surprise that none of our players is really standing out in terms of stats and average rating.

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic has been the standout so far. The big Serbian is not a fancy sweeper keeper that someone like Pep Guardiola favors but his style of play is perfect for our team. He makes no hassle making the saves and is excellent at collecting the crosses.

None of our defenders in performing well compared to others in the league. Actually, all of them have been poor in basically all of the metrics but I would like to think that this is down to the team effort. When every player in the team does their share, the defenders have to do less individual work.

JANUARY ASSAULT?

As our defense has been performing really well, especially in terms of numbers, it’s not a big surprise that our defenders have generated plenty of interest from other clubs.

  • Vanja Milinkovic-Savic has drawn interest from Saudi Arabian clubs.
  • Alessandro Buongiorno has an interest from Inter Milan.
  • Perr Schuurs has been targeted by Dortmund and Wolfsburg.
  • Ricardo Rodríguez is on the shortlist of three different Saudi Arabian clubs.
  • Mërgim Vojvoda could receive an offer from Lyon or Al-Ain.

The strange thing about these are the fact that for example Schuur’s value has dropped like a stone during the first half of the season, which could lead to fairly low bids for the former Ajax centre-back. Combine this with the possible unsettling factor, and we could be in trouble.

Out of these players, I would only be willing to sell the latter two. They have both been playing a lot for us but especially Saba Sazonov has shown that he would be ready to step in for the centre-back position if the opportunity arises. We also have plenty of depth for this area and a few capable players who haven’t practically featured at all so far.

Our 19-year-old centre-back Alessandro Dellavalle and midfielder Gvidas Gineidis could well be players who we are looking to loan out for the rest of the season.

If we manage to keep the bigger and richer clubs at bay and keep hold of our starting players, there is really no need to bring anyone in during the winter transfer window. I am happy with the squad and they have so far shown to be capable of getting us the results.

Screenshot2024-05-18104302.png.8eb2b0c63afdd58083f1ba71fc9e2b0c.png

I did have a bid accepted for Inter's Stefano Sensi for just 750 thousand euros but our Director of Football was unable to agree terms with the 28-year-old. The former Italy international would have been an ideal player to fill in the small void that we have in the midfield as he is able to play multiple roles and even strengthen the starting 11. This deal would have also definitely allowed us to send the young Lithuanian Gineidis for a loan. It still might be that we will try to get this deal done again.

You are making significant progress and managed to pick up some notable results.

With regards to playing top up or top down, I would prefer playing top down, especially for the brand of football you are looking to implement. I often find having a player in the DM strata can often lead to you becoming more attacking due to the additional cover.

If he is also capable of playing those progressive passes you will also have someone who will help you to exploit the opponents vulnerability when transitioning from attack to defence.

An enjoyable read this Saturday morning.

Been really happy with the fact that the team is able to make it difficult for all the opponents. Inter were the only one who we weren't able to keep up with in the first half of the season.

The midfield is a bit tricky thing. I want the main creator, who would be Ilic, to be productive but on the other hand I don't want our style of play to become too attacking and on the other hand sacrifice the defensive stability. Three centre-backs do create a good base but basically still I want all of our players to do their defensive job and the DMs are obviously one the most important players and roles in this.

Regista could be a good hybrid role between deep-lying and roaming playmakers.

THIRD QUARTER

As the save is progressing quite slowly at the moment, the third quarter is only going to be covering January and February 2024.

thirdquarter.png.c0fb01488a4bf4f17963d4d4f6682eaf.png

START OF THE TRANSFER WINDOW

The assault started early on as Al-Nassr enquired about Karol Linetty, Dortmund came in for Alessandro Buongiorno and Al Attihad made an offer for Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. Buongiorno was just fine with us rejecting the rather laughable offer from Germany but Vanja made me promise that he would be playing in Continental tournaments next season.

JANUARY 2024

2V5tWMF.png

LECCE (H)

We started the year against 8th-placed Lecce. It was a bit of a different kind of game for us as we actually dominated the game by summing up 19 shots in total and 2.56 xG. Both were the highest we had achieved this season. Zapata’s early goal gave us a platform and even though Lecce scared us with a late equalizer, which luckily was a clear offside, we never looked like slipping.

The second goal again showed Raoul Bellanova’s lethal ability in our system. Even though this goal came after a free-kick clearance, it shows how important the pacey wing-back is to us. And Pietro Pellegri of course was again there where he has been scoring his goals.

ZQ1TCxZ.gif

FIORENTINA (A)

We made it nine without losing against Fiorentina in a game that turned out to be a goal galore. Even though this was our worst defensive performance of the season, after the draw against Inter, it wasn’t really as disastrous as the amount of goals tell you.

The first one was Karol Linetty’s mistake where he ran into Alessandro Buongiorno, thereby gifting the ball to Nicolás González. The second one came from a corner kick while the third was really bad as our three centre-backs weren’t able to deal with Belotti who turned in front of Perr Schuurs and got past him before slotting the ball in from 20 yards out.

Fiorentina also made errors here in all three goals with some awful marking play. We were clinical though by summing up 5 shots in total and scoring with 3 of our 4 shots on-target.

INTER (A)

As I knew that we would probably lose against Inter, no matter what we did, I decided to go with a second-choice team at San Siro. The team battled quite well, but two rather early goals made it quite comfortable for the hosts. Our first and only shot of the game came through Anthony Sanabria who headed in the consolation goal from a free chance at the far post.

TRANSFER UPDATES

nZDdZax.png

Our backup goalkeeper Luca Gemello accepted Bayern Leverkusen’s offer instead of extending his stay in Turin. The departure of the Italian keeper means that one of our summer signings must be a backup keeper for Vanja whose stay here will also be determined based on our league performance during the second half of the season.

Luckily we have already identified our number one target.

Lucas Cañizares, the son of Santiago, would be an excellent addition to the team as his contract is running out in the upcoming summer, and because his level is already at Serie B level he could probably become a better player than Vanja Milinkovic-Savic is. With his height of 1,88m, he should be the type of keeper that could fill the mold that Vanja has created for us this season.

Stefano Sensi is the first signing we have made. The 28-year-old former Italian national team midfielder has been suffering from injuries and lack of game-time the last couple of seasons but his two performances against us and his performances in general made me sure that he would be the ideal candidate to strengthen our attacking midfield next season as we are unlikely to make young Uros Kabic’s spell at Turin permanent.

SALERNITANA (A)

The matches continued after 11 days of break. Against Salernitana we were again forced to play outside our comfort zone as the home side seemed more than happy with a goalless draw. Almost 70% of possession but just two shots in the first 45 minutes is a real storyteller.

A lucky bounce from a corner kick and the super-sub Pietro Pellergri were enough to turn the game for us though. The Italian came in in the 64th minute, scored less than a minute later from his rebound, made two important interceptions late on close to our penalty area, and also won a penalty in the 92nd minute, which Antonio Sanabria decided to miss. Can’t get over how dangerous the young Italian is when unleashed.

THE DEADLINE-DAY DRAMA

zQAny3n.png

The final day of the winter transfer window started in a dramatic manner as Duván Zapata suffered a knee injury which would likely keep the experienced striker sidelined for the next 2 months. This, on the other hand, allowed us to terminate his expensive loan deal including both monthly fees as well as paying his hefty 89 thousand weekly wages.

The departure meant that we were also forced to dip our feet in the transfer market as we would need a third man to fill in for the two striker spots.

I have been pointing my focus towards two players throughout the season. Lorenzo Lucca, the former Torino youth product, who is currently on loan at Udinese from Ajax, and Roberto Piccoli who is on loan at Lecce from Atalanta. The problem with both of them was the existing loan deals and with Lucca because he has an optional signing-on fee with Udinese.

This forced us to point our focus elsewhere…

HSNJrDz.png

Palmeiras’ Argentinian José Manuel López looked like an ideal candidate for us. Even though our scouts only had minimal knowledge of him, the stats showed me that he would be exactly what we were looking for: well-rounded, strong aerially, and still developing.

xGEDYlu.png

Sadly six hours was not enough to get the deal done and this means that we are going to be one good player short in our attack for the rest of the season.

The transfer story took another twist though as we placed a loan offer for him which was accepted along with a 3.9 million euro mandatory signing fee. We gladly took this even though the player can only join us in July of 2024.

Even though López only joins the club next season, I will count this as a first-season signing, which means that the deal won’t limit the summer transfer window transfers in any way.

The strange thing that happened on deadline day was Sevilla coming in for our third-choice goalkeeper Mihai Popa for a loan deal. I was happy to accept the Romanian’s move to Spain where he would serve as a backup as well as Sevilla paying 80% of his salary.

FEBRUARY 2024

ZEPcSQR.png

ATALANTA (H)

We made it 11 in a row against Atalanta who are looking to run away with the title. Both teams had their chances and the visitors were slightly the better team here. We can be a bit bitter here though as we had a couple of good chances in the second half, the last one falling to Toni Sanabria in the 93rd minute which he should have buried.

Gvidas Gineidis was a real surprise here as he replaced Vlasic in the number 10 position. The young Lithuanian was surprisingly involved and had two decent chances to score too. I also have to mention Adam Masina who is a real asset when we need to defend. The loanee is not making any starts for the club but he is constantly able to shut the door at the left flank.

BOLOGNA (A)

The visit to Bologna was one of the best games of football we have witnessed so far this season. It was the first occasion in a long time when we were really in trouble down the flanks against another wing-back formation. This is also where Joshua Zirkree got the low cross for his equalizer.

The hosts were the better team for most of the time but substituting both our starting wing-backs before the hour-mark gave us control of the game.

We also scored two rather beautiful team goals as Ivan Ilić, this time employed as an advanced playmaker, utilized the channels that Bologna left open. The Serbian set up Toni Sanabria for the opener and combined other times with Sanabria and Raoul Bellanova in the second:

RnG6pHb.gif

Pietro Pellegri had been quiet in his start against Atalanta but the youngster gave us the victory here and in general caused havoc in the second half inside the penalty area, also hitting the crossbar once.

UDINESE (H)

All streaks have to come to an end and sadly this happened in an unexpected way against Udinese. We were in total control of the game for most of the match but were hit twice from set-pieces where we have been rock solid throughout the season.

Perr Schuurs was benched to the game due to a small injury to his knee which seemed to lead to a disaster in terms of commanding the penalty area.

In attack, we should have done better. Pietro Pellegri scored once again after a nice team move but even though Antonio Sanabria’s linkup play was toxic for the visitors, we lacked the players who would bury the chances.

BAD DAY ON THE PITCH - GOOD DAY IN THE OFFICE

1XQiZuN.png

A bad day in the office ended nicely as we secured our third summer signing. This time from the Barcelona B team as the 20-year-old Marc Casadó was convinced to join our club on a free transfer.

Quote

“Marc Casadó is known for being a defensive central midfielder who provides a lot of balance to the team. He is also a hardworking, intense player, who shows leadership both on and off the pitch, a very positive aspect for the team. He creates attacking opportunities with the ball at his feet, as he can dictate the pace of the game and move the team around accordingly.”

This is a direct quote from the Barcelona website. I think his player profile fits our bill just perfectly and after further scouting, our scout also gave the young Spaniard an A-rating.

wkhBn0d.png

Casadó has been impressive for the B-team this season, winning the ball back more than 16 times every 90 minutes. Along with his ball-winning skills, he also possesses the progressive pass that our current two ball-winners Karol Linety and Adrian Tameze are missing. The good performances have also earned him two appearances in La Liga this season.

He might not be the next Sergio Busquets, but I think he is a perfect addition to our midfield and also gives us the option to get rid of one of the two more experienced options if the opportunity arises.

The confirmed transfer means that we are only missing our backup keeper for the upcoming season. The already mentioned Lucas Cañizares is a no-no as the youngster committed his future with Real Madrid by signing a three-year contract extension.

NAPOLI (A)

“A gift that keeps on giving” was my initial thought when we went 1-0 down in less than a minute from another corner-kick goal. The team bounced back though and played one of the best away games so far against José Mourinho’s Napoli.

Napoli took a bit of the control in the second half but in general, we were the better side here, which is something that I didn’t expect. Sadly it was a bad day in the office this time for Pellegri who was not able to get himself going. Sanabria on the other hand continued his productive form with a goal from his own rebound.

GENOA (H)

The disappointing run of form continued against Genoa in a game where it was Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s howler that started our downfall. Pietro Pellergri got us back on level terms just minutes later. In the second half, we lacked the cutting edge to see the 17th-placed team off. I wouldn’t say that we should have scored one or two goals more but this was the third consecutive game where we should have been able to produce a clean sheet.

BATMAN AND ROBIN

7eAPrWX.png

The dynamic duo of Piedmont has been able to answer the call ever since we lost Duván Zapata. Even though the chart shows both players playing 9 games, it is worth mentioning that Pietro Pellegri has only started 6 of those which means his goal contribution has been excellent.

LEAGUE TABLE AND PLAYER STATS

4SnOBTv.png

Atalanta seemed to already be on the run for Scudetto, but as you can see, their form has lately disappeared, allowing both Milan clubs to catch up with them. It wouldn’t be a big surprise to see AC Milan clinching the title eventually as their defense, led by Mike Maignan creates such a good platform for success. The race for the European spots is very much on also.

Shame to see the deal for Lopez fall through, so you think you will continue to scout his performances, with the view to going back in for him? Or are you more than content with Batman and Robin in terms of sharing the goal scoring burden?

You are well in the hunt for the top 6, looking forward to the next update.

I think I must have written the part about Lopez badly. We managed to seal the deal so that he will join us in July, first for a season long loan and after that permanently on a 3.9 million euro deal. :)

He should be a good addition to the team as I have fallen in love with the good old target-forward mentality lately. Vanja is a strong distributor with his kicking and he quite often opts to Sanabria with a longer approach and as he wins about 45% of his headers, we get quick combinations through that.

The idea is now to have three strikers who can play both the more advanced and link-up striker roles. Actually there is possibly going to be three as Demba Seck is returning from loan from Frosinone.

For the current season, there isn't going to be much help. David Okereke has been playing only 5-30 minutes every now and then hasn't done anything. Nikola Vlasic on the other hand probably could work as a more advanced forward if one of the starting duo is not fit to play.

Pellegri has especially been superb for us. He started the year coming on after 60 minutes and practically always causing a havoc with his presence. I was a bit doubtful whether he would be able yo make the same impact as a starter but so far so good. Sanabria on the other hand shouldn't be judged based on his goalscoring as he is more of a linkup player.

Even though there isn't otherwise much to cheer about in our performances, I am really enjoying the way this duo is doing their stuff.

In terms of league position, I would be happy with 8th or 9th which would see us not qualifying to Europe. Then on the other hand this is probably going to be what is needed if we want to keep Vanja whom I wouldn't like to lose.

Doing very well here with Torino. After three years of consistently finishing 10th, you're very much on track for a little better and European football in your first year.

I would probably be managing this club myself if you weren't, but for sure I could not compete with the graphical mastery so I'm hunting around for another Italian team that isn't being written about. On the graphics, that's a great touch to have the new signing (Casado) in a Torino shirt for his announcement post!

Keep up the great work.

Thank you. I'm actually fairly frustrated with the graphical representation as the skin colors, fonts etc. make it a real mess.

I'm going to bring in something new in my next update but reporting the matches is still a bit of a pain.

Was thinking of creating a match report template myself but it might be a bit too time consuming for a hobby.

THE LAST QUARTER

We step into the final three months of the season battling for our place in Europe for next season along with six other teams, including our bitter rivals Juventus.

kPLHjFi.png

The schedule is quite clear for us. We need good months in March and April to secure a place in Europe. The end of the season in May will be tough, but I couldn’t imagine a better way to end the season than a home game against Juve.

MARCH 2024

SASSUOLO (A)

kJEMgWR.png

We made a bright start to the away game once again and controlled the events until their first goal which came from a marking error from Raoul Bellanova. The match reminded me of Rocky Balboa’s first match against Clubber Lang where the heart just wasn’t in there. Sassuolo were the better team and ended our misery from the penalty spot in the second half.

This was the first game in a long time where the feeling of lack of depth was evident. As Batman and Robin cannot play 90 minutes in every game, there isn’t anyone on the bench who could make an impact.

MONZA (H)

i0y4YLs.png

When bad things pile up, the process is often difficult to stop. The 1-1 draw against Monza quite much summarizes this. The visitors were happy to see the first half draw to a close without any real events to mention. But then we conceded a goal from an indirect free kick where we lost the first ball and made a huge marking error for the second.

Despite our man advantage for 50 minutes, we only managed to score once through Pietro Pellegri after a nice team move from a quick counter.

We should have been able to score more but our attacks constantly were guided towards Raoul Bellanova whose crosses were nullified by the Monza defense time after time.

CAGLIARI (A)

sRQVEE3.png

The five-game streak without a victory finally ended against the whipping boys from Cagliari. For the first ten minutes or so, we looked fantastic, but after an early goal through Pietro Pellegri, we conceded again from a big error from Mërgim Vojvoda this time. This also meant we hadn’t had a clean sheet in seven games.

Two early goals in the second half were enough to see us through and end the ongoing nightmare. Still, there is a lot of work to do to bring back the team's confidence.

LAZIO (H)

X3hyz45.png

The away victory against Cagliari was a small relief as we lost again at home versus Lazio who are battling for the same positions.

This was probably our worst performance of the season. We did limit the visitors to 8 shots in total but could not deal with their wide-play threat even when trying to double on their AM-FB combination. Both goals came from wide areas where we have been struggling a lot lately.

Perr Schuurs got us the only one from a direct free-kick which was already his second this season. Another defender, Ricardo Rodriguez, has recently been showing signs of his best times being over. It might be a good idea for us to rely more on Saza Sabonov for the rest of the season.

WQGXyJR.png

Juve’s Massimiliano Allegri was the next unfortunate manager to face sacking, and I think I am starting to be quite close to being the next one.

APRIL 2024

In April, we have a difficult away encounter against Milan, who are now top of the table. This is a game where it is impossible to expect anything else than a brave performance. Otherwise, we need to start winning games.

MILAN (A)

vlnf0sQ.png

We did limit Milan to 8 shots in total but set pieces once again undid us as Malik Thiaw headed in one early on from a corner kick. The hosts also got a penalty kick from a push in a corner kick which Olivier Giroud sent high and wide.

It wasn’t a brave performance from us as we only got one shot towards Mike Maignan’s goal. What was good though was Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s performance which included four saves in total. It was the first good game from the tall keeper in ages.

HELLAS VERONA (H)

kYi6C9V.png

The good old Torino seemed to be back for the first half of the game, which we almost dominated and where we were able to score twice.

Based on the first 45 minutes, I saw no signs that we would be able to drop points here, but somehow we did. It was set pieces once again that undid us as we conceded twice from corner kicks. Those were also the visitors’ only two shots on target.

5sDWdwD.png

It was a bit of a decision out of passion, but our set-pieces coach Paolo Maiorino was sacked after the game with an immediate effect. The 34-year-old had only joined the club in August, and based on his performances in the first half of the season I would have given him a raise. But as we have now lost so many points thanks to our poor performance in dead-ball situations, it was time for him to go.

EMPOLI (H)

Qp7cOcj.png

The clear victory doesn’t give you a full picture of the reality. We were the better side but not as convincing as the numbers suggest.

As Pietro Pellegri was injured, we had to go back to a 3-4-2-1 formation which worked well partially as all of the top three scored a goal and Nikola Vlasic played his best game of the season, also scoring two beautiful goals.

We were undone immediately from the kick-off after the second goal which saw Antonio Sanabria ending his +10 hour goal drought.

For the first half of the season Torino, this would have probably been a piece of cake but the team didn’t look convincing at any point. Even though we didn’t concede from set pieces, all the deliveries seemed to cause us a lot of problems.

What was positive though was the fact that the first 7 shots that Empoli recorded did not hit the target as we were forcing them to difficult angles and also blocking many of their efforts in front of Luca Gemello. Sadly the first and only shot on target found its way through to our net.

FROSINONE (A)

ukNB2jD.png

We have come to a moment where I don’t recognize the team anymore. We had a couple of injuries which saw Ricardo Rodríguez’s season ending early on. Nikola Vlasic was still in the starting lineup even though he had suffered a knock against Empoli.

The team seemed to be all over the place with a 3-man defense which forced me to change the formation twice inside the game. A deep 4-4-2 seemed to do the job for us and we looked fairly comfortable after Alessandro Buongiorno had scored his first of the season from 30 yards out.

I was hopeful for a clean sheet but in the end, it was the goalscorer Buongiorno running to Perr Schuurs with the ball, and losing it to our own man Demba Seck to give the visitors their equalizer after they had created almost nothing against us.

Could this season already be over?

CHANGES IN THE TEAM

4b0KlBW.png

It took us a long time to find a backup for Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, but we finally did. Jacopo Sassi is the Italy U-21 national team’s starting goalkeeper currently on loan at Pro Vercelli in Serie C from Atalanta. The young man has played 31 games so far this season, conceding 29 goals and having 12 clean sheets.

He doesn’t look like much in terms of our scout reports, but he fits the criteria that I wanted:

mvk8Amh.png

  • With his height of 194 centimeters, he has a good aerial ability.
  • He has good long distribution with his feet.
  • He is willing to be a backup and continue his development at Torino.

The new set-pieces coach

CZ3YPgo.png

Our new set-pieces coach will be Beninese Yacinthe Oinsou who stood out of the applicants we received. The new man gets immediately thrown into the deep end as we finish the season against AS Roma, Internazionale, and Juventus.

MAY 2024

AS ROMA (H)

AanPf5V.png

I got back to some aspects that had worked out well for us earlier this season, such as bringing in the ball-winning midfielder role and more active closing down combined with a low block.

This team looked more like the one we were used to in the first half of the season as we blew Roma away. Nikola Vlasic was once again in top form, recording his second 9.9 rating with two goals and an assist which saw the Croatian’s tally grow to ten goals this season.

The new set-pieces coach also had a good start with us as we managed to keep Romelu Lukaku quiet in corner kicks and indirect free-kicks.

INTER (A)

OzHsKEa.png

It would have probably been a bit much to ask for anything from San Siro. Especially as the hosts scored from their first attack and first shot of the game.

We kept the underachieving giants at bay for about 70 minutes where they only had recorded 4 shots in total. We ran out of gas though and Inter battered us heavily in the last twenty minutes, also earning a deserved second goal from a low cross.

It was a significant loss to us as Vanja Milinkovic-Savic stated that promises had been broken right after the game and that he would be looking for options in the upcoming summer transfer window.

JUVENTUS (H)

GVX2Ucy.png

And then there was the big derby where the winner would be in the UEFA Conference League. Small injuries kept pouring on us as we now also had Raoul Bellanova missing the big game. Pietro Pellegri was finally fully fit to play, albeit starting from the bench.

Xabi Alonso’s men had come to the game mainly to protect their clean sheet, which made the game fairly uneventful for the first 60 minutes. Both of the more significant chances fell to our centre-back Perr Schuurs, who troubled Wojciech Szczęsny twice with his direct free-kicks, also hitting the bar in the 54th minute.

One man made the difference again as Pietro Pellegri stepped in after the 60-minute mark.

Just minutes later, the young Italian got his foot to a low cross, where the ball deflected to Antonio Sanabria, who had an easy tap-in from close range.

Juventus then changed their game plan and took control of the match for the rest of the game.

The second goal fell to us though as Antonio Sanabria fought the ball to our team close to the halfway line before launching a precise through ball to Pellegri, who finished this time with confidence after being close to offside.

Juventus’s best chance came in the 85th minute when Adrien Rabiot escaped behind our defensive line before guiding his effort to the side net from a narrow angle.

It was a fantastic derby between the two clubs where both teams defended well. This time we managed to get through Wojciech Szczęsny who once again took a couple of big saves for the hosts. Vanja Milinkovic-Savic might have played his last game of the club, which he did in style by making 5 saves in total while recording a 7.7 rating.

BRIEF SEASON SUMMARY

9e5Vn9o.png

In the next post, I will be going through our first youth intake. I will then also write a bit more about the season in general, and especially why I think the team was so much weaker, especially in terms of defending in the second half of the season.

Very solid season indeed. Just need to turn some of those draws into wins and you’ll be right in the mix.

how did your intended style of play look on the stats over the league season? Did you see the trends you wanted.

Very cool post and storyline, mate! Looking forward to the next season :)

Thank you. The May practically saved it for me and I'm also looking forward to season 2. As the team is now ready, the only job is to keep hold of our key players and thereby not have to dip our feet to the transfer market anymore. More about that in the upcoming posts.

I did see something, although instead being dangerous in counters, we were more like a Catenaccio team this season. Luckily the counters started to flow a bit better towards the end which gives me ideas to build on.

Even though the second half was poor in terms of numbers, the defense still was quite solid as we didn't give away lots of chances. Set-pieces were the biggest difference as in the first half we only conceded once from corners while in the second we conceded 8 times.

For the last post I was a bit lazy as I didn't include any gifs. Should fix this as we did score some beautiful goals despite struggling. I might include some of these either in the previous post or upcoming.

The main things here are that I have now a clear idea for the graphics and also that the team found some of the old identity in May. These two make me want to continue.

As this first season took me almost 72 hours of time to complete, I might change to a monthly reporting again. This will also be easier in terms of small details and work in terms of graphical design.

I already liked your Betis-Save and and your reports.

Torino sounds very interesting. I also like the well-thought tactic with a defensive and counter-attacking approach. I also prefer this tactical style.

Will be interesting if you can take your tactic to the next step with some new-signings.

I will follow!👍

I know this feeling only two well. Trying to cram all the details of a season into one update is very difficult. Usually I’m a monthly man but such as life at the minute.

it’s not a bad place to start when you consider the overall plan is to play on the break. If you can get the defensive aspect correct then it gives the foundation to allow maybe one or two flair players to make things happen in attack.

My teams are lethal at corner, I score from over 20 regularly. The near post is the sweet spot. Maybe worth looking to see if that’s where you have conceded them from. When I defend corners I always leave the middle of the box free for my goalkeeper to come and claim it. But you need a keeper who’s good in the air and can command his area.

definitely worth watching the goals back without emotion so you can study it closely for patterns to see if you can fix them.

Thank you very much. What is also good with this approach is the fact that the results are quite close to reality. With another approach, I could have quite easily qualify to the Champions League but that really isn't the idea here.

I was first even against the Conference League but then realized that this will allow me to give more game time to the youngsters in the team. So basically Conference League is going to be a tournament where I only play youngsters, rotation and backup options.

The problem with set-pieces is that I have delegated them to my dedicated coach and that is also why this person was changed in the latest update.

I think in general we still were in the benefiting side in set pieces throughout the season but obviously when you concede almost ten more in the second half, it is going to influence the results.

I have high hopes especially for Stefano Sensi. I think a creative advanced midfielder is something that we missed in season one so it is going to be interesting to see what he can do and how this will affect our striking duo which I feel is quite capable for this level.

The gaming time that I currently have is mainly during the weekends and even then only at times so the progress is very slow compared to some other FM players, especially as you take into account how much effort I put on small details in the game.

FIRST YOUTH INTAKE

The aim for season one was to get at least one promising youngster through our first youth intake. When we received the initial estimation in December, it was showing that the intake could be a decent one, and could include a promising goalkeeper who might be the heir of Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in the long term. The initial report proved to be wrong though.

youthintake.png.8c5afb948e51e14fde4812300a933648.png

Against all the expectations, the first intake was excellent as it included three promising players from three different positions. Mirco Villani is thought to be the best of the bunch. Still, centre-forward Michele Piazza doesn't seem far away, and based on the star rating, he might even become better than Villani, who might become even better than Alessandro Buongiorno. Giacomo Rossi is the third promising midfielder who could well once play next to Samuele Ricci who has become one of our most important players at 22.

THE EXPLANATION OF ATTRIBUTES

As you might have noticed, I am using an attributeless skin in all my FM saves. This one is from @GIMN whose Mustermann Skin immediately took my heart after the first try, and I have never looked back after that. Playing without attributes has changed my style of play in FM and I can honestly say that after trying it once means that I would never like to go back to the old way of playing as this one is so much more interesting to me.

Anyway, as all the readers might not be familiar with the attributes, I will explain them briefly.

  • Yellow circle = excellent attribute (16-20)
  • Bright red circle = good attribute (11-15)
  • Dark red circle = decent attribute (6-10)
  • Small red circle = poor attribute (1-5)

So term short: the brighter the circle is, the better the attribute.

PLAYER PROFILES

MIRCO VILLANI

Spoiler

Screenshot2024-05-29121157.png.ea4a6d2ae50e9e38de292164f3fae608.png

What I like about Mirco the most are his two mental attributes, bravery, and teamwork, which are already at an excellent level. He is otherwise a bit of a work in hand as he lacks both concentration and determination. He is also still fairly slow, but luckily decent aerially.

I have taken control of his individual training and started training him to be a ball-playing defender as I want my centre-backs to be good on the ball. Mirco will be turning 16 next autumn and it might be that he will already get his senior debut either in the Conference League or Coppa Italia.

GIACOMO ROSSI

Spoiler

Screenshot2024-05-29121224.png.e9492fe20a1dbf72b7e00e91b556c31c.png

Giacomo Rossi is more of an all-rounder which is a good thing in midfield. He is already decent on the ball with his technical abilities and he might be a good fit to a segundo volante role where I am also training him. Despite his rather tall figure, he has a lot of work to do in his aerial ability as well as with some of his mental attributes.

MICHELE PIAZZA

Spoiler

Screenshot2024-05-29121249.png.014a2f002a9906fcf559855b5df3beb7.png

Michele Piazza is another youngster with a lot of work to do before he is to be ready for the first team. He is decent technically and he has good vision along with decision making which make him a decent link-up forward already. I also like his traits, especially the habit of coming deep to get the ball. With this aerial ability and lack of height, it would be wrong to describe him as a copy of Pietro Pellegri or Toni Sanabria, which is also why I am more in favor of training him as a finisher. Maybe advanced or complete forward?

SEASONAL GOALS

seasonaims.png.5e7594c9357512dc9e53dbcc6416ad01.png

As the youth intake turned out to be a success with at least three talented players, we achieved all our seasonal goals in season 1.

Our defensive record deteriorated in the second half of the season but 33 goals conceded is a decent number as we were aiming to get below 40.

Qualifying to Europe was a clear overachievement as was the youth intake with our original Head of Youth Development Ruggero Ludergnani.

Our board was also very generous in terms of both staff recruitment and facilities which saw us upgrading both our training and youth facilities as well as youth recruitment.

We were also given almost free hands in terms of coaching staff recruitment as our board allowed us to expand the number of coaches twice this season, which meant that we now have 18 first-team coaches in total instead of 9 where we started the season.

WHAT WENT WRONG?

bad.png.fa64b136ac0353942c24825607564776.png

There were a few things that went wrong in terms of performances last season. I already mentioned how much worse we were in set-pieces during the second half of the season. Conceding 8 goals more from corner kicks was a big kick in the teeth and this of course shows in results.

The second clear change in terms of performances happened down the flanks where we had big trouble defending, especially against formations with both a winger and a full-back. Mërgim Vojvoda was able to keep up with the pace down the left-hand side but Raoul Bellanova’s right wing was a clear area of trouble.

Our third big problem was winning the ball back. Alessandro Buongiorno was the fair play player of the year and Torino was the fair play team of the year. What is stunning in terms of Buongiorno is the fact that he appeared in all 38 games without getting a single booking as a centre-back! These stats tell you that we weren’t trying to win the ball back as effectively as we should.

Some individual performances also changed. Vanja Milinkovic-Savic was the second best goalkeeper after Mike Maignan for the first half of the season and boasted a 90% save percentage which fell to 81% towards the end of the season. Vanja still had +5,17 for prevented xG but his performances did drop in the second half of the season.

Raoul Bellanova was the second individual underperforming. He was both ineffective going forward as well as winning the ball back in defense. Down the left-hand side, Mërgim Vojvoda outperformed him in almost every metric.

In terms of performances, we also lacked a player who could give us the final pass which also shows in the stats as Ivan Ilic and Toni Sanabria were our best assisters with 5 for each of them. It is going to be interesting to see how Stefano Sensi can change this in the advanced playmaker role.

THE POSITIVES

pellegri.png.709c54993c966defa8a2ca093d552391.png

The main positive individual was Pietro Pellegri, who was elected as both our young player of the season and player of the season. The previously injury-prone striker scored 0,69 goals for every 90 minutes that he played which means 12 Serie A goals in total. This is a great number for a player who only started 15 games in the league.

Mërgim Vojvoda is a player, I have already mentioned a couple of times, which moves me to Nikola Vlasic who had a superb end to the season. The former West Ham midfielders scored 10 goals in total (0,38 for every 90 minutes) and was thereby one of the most lethal attacking midfielders in the league.

THE FUTURE

future.png.7cf6c5c0002f3cf9f01305b2899ecbcf.png

A board takeover for a team in a questionable financial state is the thing that has been looming around us lately. I have no idea what this would mean in practice, so I am not worrying about it too much.

We have all our summer transfers already made, which means that we are ready for the upcoming season which we will start with a training camp in Austria

The main goal for the upcoming summer is to keep hold of our key players who have of course created plenty of interest both in Europe and Saudi Arabia.

Here is the current list of wanted players.

  • Pietro Pellegri & Raoul Bellanova (Dortmund)
  • Antonio Sanabria (Al-Ain)
  • Nikola Vlasic (Everton)
  • Ivan Ilic and Gvidas Gineidis (Porto)
  • Ricardo Rodriguez (Al-Ain, Al-Arabi & Al-Grahafa)
  • Koffi Djidji (Lyon & Marseille)
  • Saba Sazonov (Real Betis)
  • Alessandro Buongiorno (Manchester United, Al-Hilal & Newcastle)
  • Samuele Ricci (Porto & Dortmund)

Along with the new signing, I will be adding at least Demba Seck and Emirhan İlkhan to the team next season. Ilkhan had a strong season in his home country as he appeared in 34 games in total, scoring 6 and assisting 4. Demba Seck was lacking goals with Frosinone but still featured in 28 games for them.

I am also going to assess our under-20s team as we are a bit short on players, especially in the centre-back and wing-back areas where we will be losing Adam Masina and Matteo Lovato who would have been excellent additions to our Conference League squad.

Thank you so much.

The youth intake is always an interesting one when you don't even get a clear idea of the attributes. Seems that none of them will be knocking on the doors of the first team any time soon though.

Will you opt to cash in on this after his downturn in performances?

In ideal situation no. I would rather keep hold of all my key players from last season. Especially the wing-back area is crucial as I only have three options plus Rodriguez to throw in there. And Bellanova is quite clearly the best of them on paper. Would be almost a disaster to lose him, even if he had a poor ending to the season.

Thank you. Much appreciated. :)

An excellent first season, finishing above Turin rivals Juventus and earning a place in Europe too. I like what you said about the reality and the Conference League is a very good level to be at, not too much too soon.

Great youth intake write-up also, even the names of the trio highlighted give a proper Italian flavour. A bit surprised to see Bellanova not shining brighter, but really pleased you will keep hold of him and hopefully he will have a better season next time.

With a strong spine of goalkeeper and two reliable centre-backs and Ricci in midfield, it's a really good unit and one where it makes sense to build 'back-to-front'. In time, I'm sure the attacking side of your team will start to deliver more goals.

Always loving the graphical presentation, even if you're not always as impressed as I am about them

Thank you so much for the comment. I can clearly notice that you have laid a lot of attention to that detail of my writing, which is always nice to see. :)

Fully agree on everything, especially with the spine of the team. I'm just a little bit afraid that a team with only stable financial status might be tempted to just get the money when offered. Haven't seen this happening yet from the board on this FM but with Torino I have a bad feeling about this.

The aim is to keep hold of as many starters as possible and thereby keep the foundation together. If we can do that, I would say that we have a good team to battle for top-half finish in Serie A and talented pool of youngsters and rotation players to take care of Europe.

I'm currently taking a bit of a distance to the save game as I traveled to northern part of Finland to meet my family and only traveled with my work laptop. This story will thereby continue probably in the second half of June.

Feel free to keep the thread going though. I read the community regularly with my phone.

Firstly, enjoy Finland. It's good to have a break sometimes and time with your family will surely be more important!

In reality, the Torino board have been quite good at keeping their in-demand players - for a mid-table outfit at least. When there has been interest in Buongiorno before they dug in to keep him and have said similar things about him this season amidst strong interest from (AC) Milan.Whether that turns out to be just a way of bumping the price up, or whether he stays again remains to be seen, but the player himself really loves the club and rejected moves to better sides in the last year. And Schuurs demonstrated a real liking for the city of Turin when I watched him on a 'Made in Italy' episode recently.

Obviously they lost Belotti (probably both parties wish he hadn't left) and got a good fee from Juventus for Bremer, but they don't always throw the towel in so I think you're right to keep the better players there if you can do so.

Thanks. I will. I live in the Southern part of the country so it is a domestic trip but a trip anyway.

I wish that was a clear feature in the game too. Wouldn't mind Buongiorno be willing to stay and my board to keep him. He might actually be one of the hardest ones to keep. And if the board starts to accept bids, there isn't much to do. Hope that we won't come to this. Would be the worst case scenario for me to be forced to completely rebuild the team.

And to the previous comment: I actually do like the new outlook of the graphics way more. The only part I need to still fix is the match reporting but I have a few ideas for that too.

Glad you're liking the new graphics! Oh I see, just a domestic trip, but a break is a break anyway :)

Hopefully your board will help you keep the core, it would certainly be good if it plays out like that. It seems Napoli (Conte) has also shown interest in the central defender this week so with them and Milan keen you may be keeping him longer than they actually do!

DOMESTIC SEASON

SERIEA38.png.399bfbd4ac95a1ffd7661dc88fc59b4c.png

As we already know, Milan were the eventual champions in the league, mainly thanks to their sturdy defense led by Mike Maignan, who was elected as the best goalkeeper in the league. Atalanta looked good value for the title for long periods but their weak March and April turned out to be too big a dip in the form to secure the title. Inter's season was disappointing as they only won Supercoppa Italiana's final against Napoli. The bad results in league led to Simone Inzaghi being sacked and he was replaced by Unai Emery who led his team to the Europa Conference League title.

Atalanta took one trophy though as they beat Napoli in the Coppa Italia final 3-2.

It was a season of surprises in Serie B as Spezia, Como, and Brescia made their way to Serie A. Sampdoria's slump continued as the team now found themselves in the third tier of Italian football. Parma and Palermo both made it to the promotion playoff but they were both eliminated.

Interesting!

The amount of goals from the strikers seem very realistic. I also have seen this in other threads already. That is a good thing!

I'm not so far in my Celta Vigo save, and I don't know why, but the strikers are scoring very well (too much?) for the AI teams.

Haaland had 9 goals in 5 matches. Stuani (Girona) 9 in 9 matches.

Raul de Tomas (Rayo) 7 in 10 matches and so on.

I think most of them in mine are on the lower side, especially Kane and Haaland. The thing is that the numbers usually level up quite well when the season progresses.

I'm a big fan of low scoring games myself as this makes each goal a joy. Obviously when it comes to Torino, in the upcoming season it would be ideal to have a striker who scores at least 15 in the league. If Pellegri continues like he did last season, he could easily do this as he was actually the best goalscorer per 90 minutes in Serie A.

THE FIRST HIT

Our board accepted two bids for Vanja Milinkovic-Savic between the 13th and 14th of June, 2024. The Serbian international, who had been called to represent his country in EURO 2024, chose Arsenal, who paid 28 million euros for his services.

Vanja could be considered a club icon as he joined Torino in 2017/18 when he appeared in one Serie A game. It took four years and three different loan deals for Vanja to establish himself as a Torino stopper which he finally did in 2021/22 by appearing in 27 Serie A games.

After that the tall Serbian has been the first-choice keeper, playing all 38 games in 2022/23 and 33 games last season.

Even though Vanja’s performances dropped significantly during the second half of last season, the tall Serbian will be missed.

THE REPLACEMENT

keller.png.2d5f51668abe9bf2721abd2aa0393bea.png

The replacement came from an unlikely source as we opted to go for a young Swiss goalkeeper Marvin Keller who spent the last season on loan at Winterthur in the Raiffeisen Super League. The youngster had a break through season as he appeared in 35 games, conceding 38 goals.

The former Swiss U-21 international joined our club for 7 million euros from Young Boys where he had only appeared in three league fixtures since joining the club in 2022 from Wil

What I was looking for from a new keeper was first of all a financial profit which turned out to be 21 million euros when you take into account the value of Vanja.

In terms of attributes, I was looking mainly at two:

  • Aerial ability
  • Long distribution

While Keller is worse than Vanja in both of them, he is still good enough already to handle these areas well enough for Serie A level. Our scouting and coaching staff also rate the young Swiss as a good Serie A goalkeeper already and at the age of 22, he should still have a lot of room for development.

Replacing an experienced international with a 22-year-old who only has one full season as a professional in the top flight is going to be risky but a risk that I am willing to take. Keller is going to start as our first-choice keeper in Serie A while Jacopo Sassi will be the one taking the wheel in the domestic cup and Europe. The good thing about Sassi is that after more comprehensive scouting, he looks more promising out of the two.

Spoiler

What made it easy to sign Keller was the fact that we had been scouting Vanja's replacement ever since December last year when things were about to go ugly with him due to interest from Saudi-Arabia. We had multiple options available but due to salary requests, finances, and long-term plans, I opted to go with the young Swiss.

Welcome to Turin Marvin Keller!

Think Keller is a great replacement for Vanja, certainly in the long run for sure!

Hope so. The only worry is that he won't be able to develop his kicking and aerial ability to the level where Vanja was. Luckily Sassi is already close on those and like said, he might even be more promising of the duo.

Strange situation to start the season with two new goalkeepers. Now I'm just hoping that we won't lose any more of our starters.

It will be interesting to see if the GK coaches are Torino will be able to push him in the right direction in terms of distribution - aerial is a tough one though, but Vanja is a man mountain in his own right!
