  1. This has only started bothering me this year but going back over some old saves I still have on 21 and 22 and my (admittedly patchy) memory It seems to be a long standing issue.

I've been playing FM for a long time and I normally do 2 long term, single-club saves on each game. I look to upgrade youth recruitment and facilities as well as hiring the best HoYD I can as a priority and yet I don't think I've ever had a wonderkid, including 20 years with Everton on FM23.

This isn't a gripe with the game, I'm just puzzled as to how it works as I can't seem to reliably get anybody through my intake into the first team. So, what am I doing wrong?

I've seen it happen with Everton in this FM17 save - highly rated players signed for big wages eg Schmeichel, Fofana, De Ligt, Vardy, Tadic... but they couldn't qualify for European competition and the next season were battling relegation before a deduction sent them down the trap door.  Although I'm already managing Stockport, I think I will create a new manager profile to try and sort the Everton mess out by clearing the flops off the wage bill if I can and building around younger players... they need to get up first time or the EFL Fair Play rules will batter them.

    Everton, that.

Nice idea, but impractical, I think. There just isn't enough data - i.e. TV footage to make accurate attribute assessments of all but a small number of players. The retro dbs people have made have taken the attributes from old CM games. I'm currently enjoying the 2001/02 db - I packed my team with 14 year old Messis and Rooneys etc etc. Heck of a lot of fun.

I was thinking the same. I just thought it would be cool to be able to work with the contract types, "retain and transfer", the inturruption from the war, old school tactics etc. Even with fictional players it would be cool.

  4. I know there are some awesome databases out there that go back to the 2000s and 90s but I've always wondered if anybody has ever constructed one going back the 1950s or even further(In England, preferably)... I was just thinking about the how the retain and transfer system would be implemented and got around to fantasising about managing Dixie Dean or Tom Finney.

  5. I never drop below cautious, I never drop my line below standard, my normal "see the game out" routine is to drop to my more defensive formation, switch timewasting half way and turn the tempo down to "lower". In injury time I'll normally turn tempo all the way down and timewasting all the way up. No issues on the timewasting. Can you post up the screenshots of you conceding literally every time you do it?

This chore feeling happens sometimes when I play in super long leagues that last forever (46+ matches) and my club isn’t actually fighting for anything exciting. When this happens, I go to another club, or just start a new save.

Other than that, you can take a break for a few days, go play some Axis & Allies boardgame, read a book or watch Netflix… That break will refresh FM.

OOH I haven't played Axis and Allies in years... Found my set when I was moving house last week.

  7. Okay everybody... Introducing Standaard Muide from the Belgian 3rd amateur division! As mentioned, this is my local team and their ground is hidden behind the houses I'm looking out of my window at right now!

I still have to look through all my players and build a tactic but I'm made up to be able walk to work

Look out AA Gent... We're coming for you!

So... How am I finding players willing to join on amateur deals?

You could always create it. I did for Norway since there were no one available. Most of the work is in finding the info, after that it's mostly punching things into the editor. :)

I had the same thought. I just bought a six pack, so this is gonna be my evening's work.

Problem is, if they hit the big time and expand the stadium my house is getting demolished.

I have to say... I've gotten inspired by this and having just moved around the corner from a 6th tier Belgian team I fancy giving it a go. Can somebody point me to a how to guide for downloading and installing leagues?

Check that... they're in the 9th tier. Is that even possible to play as a mod?

  10. A few years ago, in FM19, I celebrated my Everton team winning the European Cup by buying a home shirt with Freddie Beckwith's (star NewGen AM L) name and number on the back.

This year, this little gem has come into my life...

I was idley scrolling e bay for football shirts and found a game-worn Sampdoria shirt with number 18 on the back. I took this as a sign from the FM gods and it arrived today. All i'll say is that it's beautiful and whoever game-wore it could have washed it in the intervening 5 years.

What are your best real life FM purchases?

  11. I have this issue with my current Sampdoria team. They are, player for player, easily good enough to consistently occupy the 5th or 6th spot in Serie A. However, we consistently loop weak headers at the opposition keeper, scuff one on ones wide of the post, hit the bar etc etc etc. Meanwhile, our opponents can routinely be relied upon to score a corker from outside of the box.

We also have a wonderful trait of (for example) losing at home to an already relegated side when needing a draw to secure qualification. When we have a chance to achieve something, we always stuff it up.

Luckily, I remain sanguine. A lifetime supporting Everton means I have seen all of this before.
