  1. Not sure if this is one for the feature request forum or a quick question in here... I'm not a manager who gets into the nuts and bolts of individual or squad training. I'm more of an Ancelotti type, giving encouragement, an arm around the shoulder, buying and selling and setting up the team. However, a major bugbear of mine for a while now is when i get, for example, a winger who'd make a great striker or a full back who'd be boss as a DC. If I instruct my youth coaches to train that position, I have to take control of every aspect of his individual training from here to eternity and the same with all my other youth teamers worth a damn.

Is there a way I can simply instruct my coaching team to train them in a position of my choosing and leave them to it?

  2. I've been playing 1860 Munich in Beta, but I'm not really feeling it after a season and a half, not sure why.

I have finally figured out why I default to Everton every year, however... It's because by the time FM comes out they're always in a bad run after flattering to deceive for a month or so. I was mighty tempted again last night.

Eibar are tempting me, as are Vitesse and AA Gent as my local team over here.

  3. I took the photo on my phone and I can't compress it below 10mb... but last night I got an Alan Partridge quote in my post match interview. I elected to reply to a question about our performance by saying "They say the proof of the pudding is in the eating and tonight the pudding was a football. We played some liquid football and at times looked unstoppable"

    Lovely stuff.

  4. I got around to installing a logo pack on my FM22 beta this morning and then thought I'd take a swing at Zealand's NewGan face pack. Now, I've played FM and CM since 1997 and this is the first time I've ever modded it... I know. Weird, right?

Anyway, I think I followed the instructions to the letter but my NewGens aren't updated and I still have the standard SI goons staring back at me. Has anybody else added the facepack to their save and did it work? Just to save me going back over it 30 times.

    This is a terrific thread.

I've had a look at the LLaMa ethos and I think I'll apply some of the principles to my FM22 save.

One of the things I tend to do for realism purposes is to create a manager profile based on a real manager or ex-player. If the person I choose to emulate already exists in the database, I record all their information to add to my own profile, then edit them out of the game. I will try to be faithful to how I think they would manage a team/club. If it's a current manager I choose to play as, I'll study their tactics and try to implement them. Last year I played as the former Ukrainian midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, who is currently a coach at Zenit St Petersburg. I had a very good career in Eastern Europe. I've still to settle on who I'll choose to play as this year. Some candidates are Xavi, Marcelo Gallardo, Vincent Kompany, Ruud Van Nistlerooy, Nemanja Vidic, Stephen Hoffman, and Juan Roman Riquelme.

Playing as a real life football personality, and adding some of the principles that give the game more realism, should really make my save more enjoyable.

This is interesting... Maybe my caricature Roy Keane/Brian Clough hybrid's time to shine has finally come.

  6. In my head it was now down to 1860 or the mystery shirt. I've been playing with 1860 in Beta and quite enjoying actually having to get good at tactics because there's no money and I can't afford scouting packages... But I thought I'd order up the mystery shirt anyway and see if it could tempt me. Burnley's 3rd Goalkeeper kit. With a massive betting logo on it. 1860 it is, I'll just keep playing my save.

Quick question. Can I add logos and a facepack after I start or do I have go back and start again?

  7. I jumped straight into 1860 Munich as the team I plan to start my long term save with on release. That maybe means that I'm not best assessing the game as I have 0 transfer or scouting budget and no idea who is supposed to be good in the German 3rd tier. Also, all the players are crap so not much good for evaluating the ME.

    However, thoughts so far

    • I really like the match engine and I'm seeing goal scored in ways I haven't in a while. Lots of headed goals, wingers actually cutting the ball back etc. Only criticisms/bugs I have (and I reported it) was that i've had my highlights setting default to "Full Match" on a couple of games...
    • ... The other one is the freakish amount of times people hit the woodwork in my games. I counted 8 in one early match and i'm averaging 3 (in my head).
    • I really like the skin
    • I really don't like the face gen. Normally, I play through a whole year without installing logo packs or face packs, but that'll be first on my list before I fire up my real save.
    • Data center looks like a really useful addition, especially once I get into customising it. Will definitely help with my end of year squad assessment.
    • Finally, I'm not sure if this is subjective but 22 seems to generate a lot less heat on my ancient laptop whilst running than 21. Although that might be because i'm not 16 years into a save.

Now I've got 2 weeks to finally win the league with Everton in 21 before starting my 22 save.

If you end up picking VItesse, I have a nice little side quest. Vitesse is known in the Netherlands for having a stadium that is much larger than their fanbase. They never fill all their seats.

So the challenge would be to have an average match attendance of 95% of stadium capacity :D

Brilliant! I cycled from Gent (where I live) to Arnhem to do the Bridge too Far route on saturday and picked up their awesome away shirt as a reward. I was wondering how big the stadium was on my way past! It looks, from the outside at least, to be bigger than PSV's for sure.

Lots of funny NEC stickers on the route between Nijmegen and Arnhem too. "Pure Hate", "Die Arnhem" that sort of stuff.

Random team could be very fun.

I think having the shirt of the team you're managing could give you a little more attachment and motivation.

Like the above says, a little bit of research to acclimatise and you're good to go...

The mystery shirt was my original idea for 22... but then I got cold feet about getting somebody I hate or that would make a boring save. I only do one save per edition and I'm already stepping outside my comfort zone here.

Still, I can cross that bridge when I come to it I guess.

    1860 for me.

It could be a long road, but even getting them close to Bayern would be a colossal achievement.

It suits the long term project I always enjoy... Never managed in Germany so learning a new league would be nice too.  The only downer is that all 8 of them remove me giving Fabian Delph the bullet on the first day, which has been a little tradition for years now.

  11. I've normally just managed Everton for the last 10 years... I do one long term save every year and just play it through and normally end up with 25 or so seasons. This year I want to try something different... I've compiled a shortlist of 8 that I'd like to have a go at, with varying degrees of challenge and added a poll. I promise to be bound by the results! Here's a little explanation for each of my choices. The goal for all saves is the same: Play as long as possible and become a dominant force in European Football, ideally by signing and developing young players.

    1. Blyth Spartans: Inspired by Tony Jameson's save and standup show. I was always amazed by Tony's achievements and commitment to the cause and would enjoy a shot at recreating an ultimate rags to riches rale.

    2. F.C. Crotone: Serie B team from Italy's southern Adriatic coast. A reasonable transfer budget and playing squad to begin with. The attraction here is winning something with a southern Italian team and one who look East to Greece for their culture. Crotone was the first Italian city founded by the ancient Greeks. Their kits are super nice also.

    3. Random Team! I'll order a shirt from one of those mystery box companies and see what shows up.

    4. Greenock Morton: I used to live around the corner from Cappielow Park and I love the Millions sponsorship. They also have a really cool old-school kit this year. I've never managed in any version to break up the Old Firm or have any joy in Scottish football (getting punted after 5 games at Cowdenbeath was undoubtedly my nadir as a manager)

    5. 1860 Munich: Bayern's local rivals and former tenants of the Allianz Arena. Years of mismanagement have left them in the 3rd tier of German football and broke. The chance to build from the ground up in a different league that i've never played before and stick it to one of Europe's super powers.

    6. Sampdoria: Admittedly the easiest of the options. Inspired mainly by those awesome shirts.

    7. Vitesse Arnhem: I like the town and I like the chance to take an unfashionable club to new heights, albeit from a decent starting position.

    8. Wrexham AFC: The chance to build from the conference, with some Hollywood glamour attached, with maybe a little extra spending money to soften the blow.

Let me know what you think!
