At the moment I find that the most efficient way to play is starting matches with Phoenix V4 and then during game make a decision keep using it or switching for Punisher V2/Stinger V1

Do you switch just based on whether you are winning or losing, or if you also want to dominate more?

Ehhh… the result isn't impressive :(, it has incredible defense but it lack attacking power... I would prefer Phoenix V4 over Raider V4

I'll remove Raider V4 tactic from the OP until further investigations

    Chelsea, predicted 3rd

    Raider v4

A sim test of the 1st season

The Morale and Conditions were frozen by FMRTE for all teams in the league

Best defensive record in Premier League history? I’d take that.

So is Phoenix better than Punisher in general?

I'm not sure what you mean but I can say that in the defensive phase IWBs do similar job as regular WBs but in the attacking phase their job is similar with what central midfielders do

I mean for example playing central or defensive midfielders as your left and right backs (they may be competent or awkward at DL/DR), rather than using orthodox fullbacks. Using Arsenal as an example, Tierney and Bellerin both love bombing down the flanks, but isn't that actually bad for this tactic in the attacking phase?

  4. I think the apparent lack of central play is down at least partly to tactics, as I am getting several goals through the middle (mainly one of my strikers assisting the other via a through ball), as well as one or two of the same type scored against me. They are certainly not slick tippy-tappy type goals like FM 17, but with sufficient space to exploit I think goals can definitely be scored down the middle.

  5. Don't know if this is the case here, but I noticed that some of my players' attributes were decreasing, but I went to the "progress" tab, and noticed they progressed massively from August to like November, then declined slightly, but they're still higher than they were at the start of the season. I've heard this is to keep players' development realistic time-wise, which may look annoying but really isn't any different than if they just decreased the development rate.

1v1s - I don't see those issues here. The players miss some and they score some. Nothing out of the ordinairy here (on comprehensive highlights).
Balls over the defence - I see them happening and i deal with them. Then it stops; not completely, but it shouldn't stop completely. I'm just making it harder for the opposition. My playstyle aren't creating those situations either.

I'm only arguing the statement that 'every single concurrent player will have the same silly issues with balls over the defence and missed 1v1s'. I'm not part of that, so it's not every single concurrent player.

I'm still not saying they aren't issues, just because i don't have those issues. They have been confirmed by SI even.
The balls over the defence i would say isn't mainly due to the long balls themselves but the defender's reaction to it. But it's possible to do something about it.

I say this 100% genuinely: I would love to know the tactics you use to mitigate this (assuming your experience is down to your tactics), because if so I would implement them in a heartbeat.

Whilst true, that doesn't make the entire match engine objectively poor. :)

You're right, I was just very miffed by the constant "well sales are great" as if that was important in relation to criticisms of the match engine. Those should be solely based on analysis of how it performs versus the real world, rather than enjoyment (if the goal is to create the best possible simulation, anyway).

Then why don't i have those numbers in my game? I don't have those 1v1 issues.
It's objectively clear that some people do have them, as per SI's confirmation, but not all players have them.
But it doesn't make it an objectively poor game/ME. The game/ME isn't just about 1v1s, wingers shooting and long balls over the top.

But if those things are happening, and they shouldn't be, that is a massive problem.

A simulation is an approximate representation of something. 'Approximate' is open for interpretation as there is no hard set rule on how close it needs to be to the real thing to be considered a good simulation. Good and bad are still subjective, whether you like it or not.

But considering the complexities of football as a game, I think they're doing a very good job.

You are correct that my choice of words is subjective, and I was trying to be concise while betraying accuracy. I agree that it is good in many respects given the complexities, but I was referring specifically to aspects of the engine that have been elucidated. Those (one-on-ones, etc.) are objectively not even remotely approximate to the real world, because the numbers show this.

By "objectively poor", you mean that it is a fact (i.e. not just your subjective opinion, but a cold-hard fact) that the FM20 match engine is poor?

I do wish people would stop passing off their opinions as facts. Alas, this is the internet in 2020...

Objective doesn't mean it is factual. Objective means without regard to personal feeling. Opinions can be based on objective evidence. This is one such example. I repeat... if a simulation does not correctly simulate the real world, then it is not a good simulation. That is an objective statement. Then you ask how does it not simulate the real world? In this case, one can use match statistics in the game vs. real life, as well as simply watching football matches, to come to an objective conclusion that the simulation does not match reality.

Which makes it difficult. I can't remember an ME that did satisfy all. If you read the nostalgic threads, people enjoyed some MEs because they were fun to play, even with the limitations and bugs. At the moment it looks like some people are staring at the known issues and forget that this game offers so much more to enjoy.

It doesn't matter how many people are satisfied or dissatisfied with the match engine. This one is unique as it is objectively poor. If this is a simulation game, and the match engine does not simulate correctly, something that can be easily verified with both statistics and the naked eye, then the match engine is bad, period. Personally I laugh at this engine, I bought Football Manager and ended up with Pinball Manager: hoof it long, shoot straight at the goalkeeper, rinse and repeat. It's so bad it's actually hilarious; why? Because you will never see a football match like that in real life. Guaranteed.

    Hi,

If you ask me then I'd say that the current ME isn't about "keeping clean sheets" because it's hard to achieve that and the current ME is about finding the best balance between the attack and the defense and I would not pay attention to the amount of goals you concede until you score more than that. :)

Also, I can suggest using the time wasting tactic that can be found at to protect your lead and "kill" the game… but I suggest using it wisely.

Thanks; it’s hard to avoid conceding with Keane and Mina at the back 😂. It’s annoying because despite the hilarious number of one-on-ones, it’s mainly lazy closing down causing problems. Also credit to RDF for the narrow attacking suggestion; extremely useful when I find my team getting countered too frequently when the ball is lost out wide. Overall great tactic (although nothing will beat winning the Champions League back-to-back with Akhmat Grozny using Gladiator last year).
