you dont need to buy a new mobile phone every year and you dont need to buy FM every year either.
Right, I noted I the most current version I have FM21 so already doing this. Thoughts on how games play out on FM23 appreciated. I'm mostly comfortable with off field features/issues.

After taking a couple of years off post covid I'm feeling the FM itch. Latest version I have is FM21, played the FM23 demo and there is something about the matchday dynamics that appeal to me. Haven't hit on what exactly but going back to FM21 just didn't feel as lively. If anyone else can put it to words may help me with my decision. Do I somehow find something else to do until FM24 or do I take the plunge on 23 ?
Other than paying full price (I know terrible timing but when the bug bites I have no control) only concern I have coming out of the demo are number of goals scored/conceded via crosses. Have had a couple of goals up the middle. Could be my tactics, my players (I'm playing as Forrest Green) so looking for feedback from the community on gameplay variety. Are you able to use different tactics effectively ? Do the AI controlled teams have diverse on pitch playstyles ?

I've left clubs because of this, new owners is a little more understandable but having it happen with owners who I climbed the mountain with....so disappointing. I always take it as a power struggle and start to go negative in the media. Some times it works out, but more often then not I end up resigning and moving on.

Agree that something more would be nice. Especially when it comes to "sugar daddy" owners. Maybe owner investment history ? While it can be easy to spot when a club that wasn't spending is all of a sudden coming for your players or competing for top players, its much harder to tell when they leave. If a sugar daddy type owner walked away in the real world, pretty sure everyone would know about it.
I had a fun scenario where I identified a club with a sugar daddy. Took about ~7 seasons for things to work out and I finally got the job. Bonus they also had a generational talent at striker. Of course once I get the job I find out the finances are awful (4mil transfer budget) and the striker (who I couldn't convince to join me at Barcelona) now wants to leave. Confused I check FM edit and sure enough the sugar daddy is gone!
Turned out to be a fun challenge/narrative but would be nice to know what I'm jumping into, especially when a clubs fortunes change so drastically. Not arguing for 100% knowledge, but some things (top 3/bottom 3 or big reversals in a clubs spending power) should be common knowledge.

Same thing happens with the World Cup, I think its a major reason you occasionally see a team of 130 avg CA winning the tournament.
Another thing I noticed while coaching a national and domestic team is that if the player is selected for a national team they still participate in domestic team training and/or games if you let your assistant handle the friendly. I noticed this because I left players in the starting 11 who were on international duty and sure enough they got injured during the game. Or at least thats what the report told me.

I felt like 17 was the most flexible in terms of tactical diversity. Could create various attacking and defensive styles that were equally effective.

1 game in I think I have it sorted
Was really only happening when I used any formation with only one wide player on each side (either just an AMR/AML with no fullback coverage or just fullbacks with not AMR/AML up front.
If I went with a formation that had both didn't see the problem.
Changing corner attacks so that I had 3 at the back seems to have helped.
Changing composition of throw in defenders may have made a difference too, but can't really say as options were pretty limited.
Really wish I had Liverpools resources and could just tell the throw in coach to fix it

Have taken Forest Green from League Two to the Championship. Along the way a small problem in the lower leagues has turned into a gaping hole in the Championship. Namely, I've getting killed on throw ins (either my team or the other teams) and counterattacks when my team is taking a corner.
I'm off to the set pieces to take a look at how I'm setup, opening this thread in the likely event I can't figure out a good counter.
At this stage I'm completely willing to sacrifice any offensive benefits so long as I can shut these types of opportunities down.
Concerns in order of importance :
1) Conceding a quick goal when they have a throw-in
2) Conceding a quick counter off of my corner attempt
3) Conceding a quick counter on one of my throw-ins

Not too optimistic as the demo is automatically removed from the library and steam cloud....probably part of the cleanup routine to delete the cloud saves. Will let you know how the steam ticket goes.

Was playing and thoroughly enjoying the demo. Save files were going to the cloud.
Bought and installed the full game. Local saves are there but the cloud saves are not.
Tried going to https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage but the demo is no longer there and its disappeared from my steam library so I can't launch it. Trying to install the demo on another system just installs the full retail version.
Did open a steam ticket as well to see if I they can find the cloud saves.

Love the idea. Every version I always try a true back 3.
Quote- Play out of the defence, standard passes and tempo, play into the box, a higher defence line, High line of engage, counter press and counter.
I had to go shorter or much shorter passes otherwise my CBs would too often try risky pass. Shorter gave me a better mix while much shorter has so far constricted the flow too much.
QuoteI didn't instruct them to close down more, because with the instruction "counter press" they do the type of press that I want, basically try get the ball back fast, and, if we can't, let's go back. But that idea is get back fast, because our tactic is a very offensive one, basically we just have 3 defensive players, but with a higher press, we will defend and try to get the possession back with all the players in a short space of pitch and fair from our goal.
Very nice, I have just had to dial closing down a little as it made the CBs commit to the ballside too much and leaving us open to a switch. Thread here has some of my tactics which aim for similar outcome. The first tactic I post is in really bad shape. I need to reload from my base formation as that one does no offense or defense. The second tactic is working on offense but can still be very risky defensively. Only deploy it against weaker teams or at home.
One thing I have been playing around with is having a lower line of engagement for the attackers and a higher line for defenders so I can condense the amount of field we will contest. Have not had enough play time with it but so far so good.

You use extremely urgent pressing, so it's no surprise that they behave that way. And on the attacking mentality, that extreme pressing urgency is even more extreme. Plus the tight marking, which makes absolutely no sense in this top-heavy formation.
I was hoping these tactics would encourage my wings to come back on defense in case the opposition doesn't go for the quick shot. In past iterations I found I could have the attackers pressing intensely while the CBs either snuffed out the quick counter or dealt with action in the box on slow buildup. Maybe I'm playing too low a defensive line and allowing the counter attackers too much time and space on the initial transition. Will remove tighter marking, make sure CB pressing is least urgent I can find, and push line up a bit.
QuoteAML / ML makes party with your right flank.
Its interesting to see when they figure it out because its non-stop attacking the weakness. In PSG game (first on list) I change to this tactic in second half to try to overcome 0-2 deficit. Big party. They score 5 in second half and I leave stadium in laundry cart.
Last game on this list I decide my team is familiar enough with tactic we can use it away against big teams. Napoli scored 6 in first half and I leave stadium through sewers.
Big teams know right away the weakness and go for it. Unpredictable is when little teams exploit it. At the moment it feels like my defender just forgets everything he has done well in past games. Which wouldn't be so bad if it was just a 1 or two goal loss. Problem is the AI will smartly keep exploiting the defender who has lost his head over and over again. Maybe I take CB with me next time I have to leave through sewers.

- totally unbalanced setup of roles and duties (the right side is virtually completely unprotected)
Relative to the left I thought they were equally bad in terms of protection.
Quote- needlessly aggressive defensive instructions, further compounded by a (very) high team mentality (attacking) and an extremely top-heavy formation
I do want to score goals. This is my concede 2 get 3 formation. So I do want to stay top heavy but interested in modifying stated aggressive defensive functions.
Quote- even your in-possession instructions are generally such that they can lead to needlessly losing the ball and thus allowing the opposition to launch quick (and easy) counter-attacks against your already highly vulnerable defense.
Your projections are accurate. This happens quite a bit. It is my teams main way of conceding, which I'm 100% ok with. What I'm trying to correct is spacing between my 3 CBs. They all seem to shift towards the ball more than I want them to leaving the weak side incredibly open to an accurate cross.
QuoteAnd btw, the above remarks were just those pertaining to your defensive risks and vulnerabilities. But the attacking side is no better.
Feast or famine there as well, but I'm so far happy with results. Used a variant of this formation and tactic to win CL and Ligue 1. I am finding the quality of the top half in the PL to be much less forgiving. Which is again fine. I'm less concerned with the number of goals scored and more concerned with how they are being scored. If I can get my CBs to play more zonal marking I'd be a much happier manager as I could shift focus to the other areas needing refining.

I've got 17 foreigner limit, no work permits required.

Ack! Thought thats where I was! The irony of asking how to help players get positional awareness when I have none myself!

So I play risky football. Used to conceding many goals initially as my team learn tactics. So fact I can occasionally concede 3 goals to a lesser team is not a concern. Conceding 5 or more to a superior team will happen.
What I'm trying to figure out is how to prevent a particular type of goal being scored. Usually when I bleed this tactic in I'll give up these types of goals throughout the first half of the season. There will be quite a few ugly games. But eventually the 3 CBs figure it out and these types of goals go away. This year though I can't seem to get rid of the poor spacing by my back three. Keeps cropping its head up periodically. I may just have the wrong players (current theory is my positioning and teamwork are too low though they're all at 14/15 in those categories.
Image attached, essentially all the opposition does it switch it from one wing to the other and because my CBs are so poorly positioned its an easy goal.
My expectation is that the two off ball CBs would be shifted more toward the right side the pitch instead of overplaying the ball side. They seem to fall into this mental space where all three of them will drift too far to the ball side and completely forget the weakside leaving us open to an easy switch.
So question is, are there any specific roles/instructions that will encourage my CBs to maintain their spacing ?

Forest Green, cause they’re nuts.
Sunderland makes it relatively easy to move up because of budget/stadium/support.

Never tried below league 2, found the jump to Championship to be the hardest. Prem is the easiest by far just because expectations are so low. Winning it usually takes me at least 5 yrs.

Brought Sunderland back up in two years thanks largely to loans. First year in Prem finished 8th. Squad got cannibalized, decided to sit on the money and let the kids play. On 11 points in January and the board gave me a B rating!
Got to say after playing teams expected to win week to week, its really nice having low expectations.
Now when Anthony Rudiger nets three against me in two games, I don't lose consciousness.
If we hit the woodwork five times against a better squad (thats pretty much the whole league) and end up losing by a goal, I'm absolutely thrilled!
6 match losing run ? Oh well, we showed some great spirit out there!
Give up three goals in the last 20 minutes to lose to Arsenal ? We shouldn't have been ahead in the first place!
I'm enjoying life so much I'm hesitant to spend during the winter transfer window. Can bring better players in, but as of now we're making a profit M2M and the youngsters are gaining invaluable experience. Just not sure if we can avoid the drop. Don't think I'll be able to bear another season in the lower leagues.

Have had the Champions league reverses others have mentioned...multiple times. 3 times I think I'd managed to bottle 4+ goal leads.
Had a Liverpool meltdown as they knocked me out of the FA Cup, CL, and pretty much the PL all in one week. Sucked.
Most recently Liverpool (again) had me at 5-0 at the half. Thought that was going to be a 8 something hiding. Think the 5-0 loss to Southampton earlier in the season was worse. All time I think the largest was a 10-4 drubbing by Man U in FM17.

Had a perfect season in domestic league through the new year, cruising to knockout rounds in CL, on course to win domestic cup when new ownership comes in.
Before the takeover one of the new owners promised to buy players and sack me. Buys two new players, offers me a decent raise but I'm still pissed about new players and the promise of firing me. Delegate everything I can to board members and vacation in between CL games.
Out of champions league and domestic cup, perfect/historic season is no longer possible
To be fair, there was no way I was going to end the domestic season perfect and CL was always a toss up and I did want to move on to new challenges,....just glad I could blame it all on the new owners!

Bought him in FM17, he was the one who always came up with something when the rest of the team weren't at their best. Mbiracles. Made the whole team better.
By the time I was able to afford his transfer costs in FM20 I could not afford his wages. Wasn't to be, but did manage a team in Ligue 1 which is where he played his whole career. Got to the point where if I held him to 1 goal I considered it a moral victory.

So true. Finding the measured voices is the hard part.
Oh I'm not nearly ready for sound advice. I usually start off with my own terrible tactics, then over to the forums once I've given up on my 3CB with no fullbacks/wingbacks and am ready to listen to reason. Only to read the threads let my bias takeover and become convinced that I can make it work with two DM's and proper man marking. Then back to the forums ready to adopt a 4 something only to stumble across a thread that gets me infatuated with the idea of a libero....
Tempting...
