Interesting question. We play roughly 62 games per season, assuming we reach the finals in all the cups, which we do tend to.

Of that, I would aim to give the first team more or less 40 games per season and the squad players about 20. More for the squad player if they are particularly competitive or look to be particularly high potential. Then obviously injuries effect that, the same as anyone else, but I think we are pretty good on that front.

Of that 40, I'd expect the first team to play close to 30 in the League and 10 in Europe.

As for rotation players, I give them both the Super Cups at the start, 2 games in the Champions League group once we have secured qualification, all of the domestic cup games during the season (including finals) and then normally at least 5-6 league games after we have won the title.

The short Portuguese season and winning the league early typically means that the first team are only playing one game per week from the Champions League Semi Final onwards. Portugal also doesn't have any crazy hectic period like late December in the UK. In fact, they have a couple of week break mid-season.

For these reasons, even without rotating much we are usually very well conditioned for the latter Champions League stages, and playing against tired opponents.

At international level, we also go pretty far into major tournaments at 100% condition because players aren't as fatigued by the season and can typically play a rotated squad for one group game.

One final point is I like to use my substitutes early. I'll often get Valentim and one other on near the 50th minute to give them time to get into the game. Then save my last one for around the 70-75th minute.

Thank you for the question. I am not sure I had ever addressed this in detail as it's very contextual to the Portuguese league.

HI ozil.this serie is the best one you have wrote (and I pick myself saying this again and again).

One question, how do Manage Portugal? Do you rotate? It's hard to get players on all games...

    Season 2021/22 Update

This is going to be a very brief update, really just to keep this thread up to date as there is a comprehensive update in the Total Football thread.

We have been working on this style for some time, and in 2021/22 it clicked and we played some of the best football I have ever seen.

    The tactical evolution was:

    • Looking back at the Control/Very Fluid football I felt that we played some nice football but we lacked some attacking edge.
      • Both against the top European sides but also the common deep defensive double pivots we faced in Portugal.
    • I started thinking about adding more Attack duties.
      • The main thing I needed was more from my Inside Forwards.
      • I wanted João Felix playing as a False 9 creating space for Jota and Embalo to combine.
      • When the Inside Forwards went to Attack, I had to move my wingbacks to Attack to avoid leaving a gap on the flanks.
      • The Mezzala was already on Attack so that meant 5 attack duties.
    • Football Manager is all about balance so 5 Attack duties set alarm bells ringing.
    • I realised that if I need 5 Attack duties to make something work, then I am probably on the wrong mentality.
    • At the same time I was reading Brilliant Orange again, whilst waiting for my laptop and the penny dropped.. I could create a collective, 'Total' attack.

    Outlook for 2022/23

Where on earth do we go from here?

With our new stadium and the professionalism of the squad we do now have the financial capability to keep this squad together. We'll need to sell a handful of the squad members as we are not sustainable without transfer fees but it should at least be on our terms.

We also have some wonderful players coming through the B Team who also had a very good season:

    RSA52oM.png

    Q5KFpfh.png

Possibly the biggest challenge is what do do with Leão, now 17-years old, European Golden Boy and generational talent demanding a place in the team.

    P8hyCzi.png

Another difficulty I am currently facing is a backlog of players ready to leave the club but the transfer market is absolutely dead following a hard-Brexit meaning players need work permits to play for the wealthiest Premier League clubs. Already getting absolutely derogatory bids for top players - £34m for João Felix??

We are not at all strapped for cash so I might sell any squad players I can negotiate at semi-reasonable deals and loan the rest to keep their value.

In the academy expanding our intake is working nicely; although not the most talented intake this year.

    0r2SCST.png

    We now have clubs in:

    • Brazil x2
    • Argentina
    • Chile
    • Uruguay
    • Chile
    • Peru (added since)

    All contributing to the academy.

    y9jvvRO.png

Having just about exhausted South America (there's a limit per country), I'll get one in Mexico next; my options are then US, China and a few in Africa. Brazil is churning out amazing players year after year again so I am taking any Brazilian options available.

hi @Ö-zil to the Arsenal!. how do you choose the teams, i mean, to me its always very hard to get a yes. i had try to recommend the same as you, but the board fail to make it official. what do you look for when searching for a feed club?

    2022/23 Pre-Season Update

    CgwHA2P.png

This was a very difficult transfer window.

Keeping hold of players was actually easy, everybody signed new contracts last season and they're professional and mostly love the club. Still get the odd wanting to move to a bigger club.. like Monaco or Leipzig  but it's easy enough to talk them round.

The challenge was creating space for young players coming through in a dead post-Brexit transfer window.

The Premier League's bumper TV deal has been fuelling the global transfer window since the start and now everybody needs work-permits to play in the UK and the market instantly dried up.

My intention was to sell Giovani Lo Celso, Ruben Dias and Victor Bobsin and then loan out the rest. Couldn't get a single bid for Dias or Bobsin and very limited interest in Lo Celso but did eventually negotiate a deal.

The major losses are Oliveira and Batista. I couldn't get a single loan offer for either - even at £0 fee and 0% wages and desperately needed to make space in the squad for the talented youngsters coming through. They've been wonderful servants for the club but unfortunately it's time. Batista is a great fit for Bayern but Oliveira is sadly following Andre Horta into Real Madrid purgatory (15 league appearances in 2 years and transfer listed for £16m with no bids).

Starting from the top, the first team is unchanged..

    2ATYXat.png

The broader first team squad is also going to see a lot of action this year as a lot of the team will be recovering from the World Cup.

    Biggest talents coming through are:

After a poor youth intake we invested £56m in new academy players, now with a very Brazilian feel.

..and newly promoted Benfica B play a 3-4-3 due to an abundance of talented centre forwards.

Whoa thank you so much; this is amazing!!!

For anyone who has yet to see, I have largely already done the 2021/22 season update in a new thread as I wanted to have a bit of fun with the style of play we have been working towards throughout this save and I felt that more would enjoy a new thread than those reaching page 16 of a 2-year old thread.

I am going to go provide a quick summary update here, on bits beyond the Total Football style and continue the save.

    Cheers

    already there :D

could you talk about your variations that you also use? i see a 2-3-5, a 4-2-4, a WM, ...

i would love to see how you change de roles to fit the same team in a lot of variations.

  5. hi @Ö-zil to the Arsenal!. first, another masterpiece :D

i have to say i am very happy that you continue this adventure with your save and fm18.

so quick question, how do you distribute the roles in the 4-4-2 diamond, and if you may, i get really curious about the 2-3-5 that you have...

i already see that you move to attack very fluid, i hope i can do that too :D

huge hug for you and cheers to this great save that inspire us so much

Yea I think you're right. The game went very jittery all of a sudden and then crashed and has been unable to open since.

I've tried restarting, even giving it a couple of days, and have done the verify files option a bunch of times but still nothing. I've backed everything up and am now trying uninstalling it.. :seagull:

If this doesn't work, it looks like I am back to FM2017!!

hi @Ö-zil to the Arsenal!, have you try to re-install the game? first make a copy of your save to the cloud so you can continue the same save again

is this a known bug for 18 ?

any news about that? i have the same issue

  8. Em 20/03/2018 em 03:36, Rashidi disse:

I tend to rotate heavily not to keep squad harmony, but to make sure my best 11 are always available for the toughest games. I feel that my squad can win every game if I play optimally, and thats optimal play imho. Playing your best 11 for every match is not feasible, because injuries will strike your team and you are not developing fringe players to the best of your ability.

A successfully managed team is one where you can achieve the perfect balance of having your best 11 for the toughest games whilst still being able to provide enough match exposure for those who need to develop.

hi @Rashidi, what is your rules about rotation? how do you do it?

  9. 22 minutos atrás, Ö-zil to the Arsenal! disse:

I have actually totally moved away from using Team Shape as a means of creating compactness; instead using duty (and sometimes TIs).

The Highly Structured Control system has an incredibly compact mentality distribution:

    13 17 13
       10 10
          6
    13 6 6 13
          10

I always have a couple of reference points:

    • Gap between central defenders and holding midfielder.
    • Gap between DR/L and MR/L.

And in this case - despite a highly structured shape - they are compact. Don't get me wrong, a Very Fluid shape could put the entire team in the 10-12 range, but never the less we are still pretty compact.

Likewise in the Highly Structured Overload discussed earlier:

          15
    17 17
       10 14
           8
    17 8 8 17
           8

Again, extremely compact despite the Highly Structured shape.

In the same way that in earlier threads I have advocated against setting everyone as a playmaker; these days I feel the same about Attack duties (in Control mentalities or above).

As a caveat to that, I do advocate the use of Attack duties in Defensive mentality systems in the same way I use Support roles in expansive systems.

For example, this Highly Structured, Defensive 4-4-2 has the following mentality split:

       10
           15
    11 8 4 11

    12 4 2 12
          2

Compact on the flanks, and centrally with a supporting midfielder not too far ahead and a striker leading the press. Attacking midfielder is a bit of an outlier, but I'd want some attacking threat.

Compare the 3 systems and see how Support duties in more expansive systems can easily have a higher mentality - in absolute terms - than a Attack duty in a more cautious system.

This is probably the single biggest area I think people misunderstand or overlook.

My only frustration is the distinction between the DM and MC(D) mentality. Sometimes it can be difficult to get an MC(D) as compact to the defenders as a DM. This makes 4-2-3-1 more difficult, unless you play 2 DMs which then gives you other problems to solve.

Very few PIs - pretty sure it'd be similar to the ones above. Go to's are:

    • Goalkeeper distribution
    • Move into Channels where available.
    • Get Forward on the Wingers
    • Occasionally giving someone freedom to roam.

Yes, precisely. Depends on the player but I'd go Complete Forward (if I want him to hold up the ball) or False 9 (if I don't). Occasionally DLF(S) if isolated.

In a previous save I used Mbappe a lot as a False 9 as I didn't want him holding up the ball, just spearheading the attack.

how do you resolve the playmaker with the 4231? it would have a low mentality

  10.  hi @Ö-zil to the Arsenal!! love that you saved the computer! :D

so, first, wow! this is a fantastic, what a dream :D

few questions, in the 433 with wingers, and because you said in the other system, do you have some pi's?

second, if you had a fantastic complete forward what do you change? just drag it to a f9, or cf?

and again, thanks for your posts, for me, you should post everyday :D

ah, and another thing, could you talk about the player traits? i think you play a lot here and i would love to read about it :D

  11. waiting for new updates :D

meanwhile, a few questions, i'm having problem with the feliz, is taking to much 3 and 4 and not performing as expected, as so the front 3. do you have some pi for this 3 guys? another one is that i see you now have tighter marking, is this something that you would have in the starting of the game or something that you can only added now because the team is more strong now?

btw, i think this save should have a post just for him. :D

  12. Em 24/02/2020 em 18:27, Ö-zil to the Arsenal! disse:

I sometimes try out different things; to see if they'll result in a noticeable improvement. More often than not with some of the TIs people ask about I cannot actually see a difference in the match engine. Really, unless it's something fundamental or something I've explicitly mentioned then I am not massively able to see it.

So, what is the core TI for you and what are you trying out?

Not exactly thrilling, but through due to the away goal.

6th place Chelsea in the Final.

Chelsea are still lining up using Conte's famous 3-4-3 set up:

    GyCf2We.png

I feel like a bit of a cop out, as I change absolutely nothing.

    0raKXhH.png

The squad goes into the final in pretty good shape. Only a few bumps to morale due to (ridiculous) transfer requests; otherwise everyone's had lots of game time, a bit of a rest and is ready to go.

    ot6ctXw.png

We keep doing exactly what we have been for the past 2 years now, passing and passing and passing. Absolutely controlling the game and coming out 1-0 winners.

    Hjbqn6e.png

The average age of the squad is still extremely crazy. Florentino Luis, Tiago Dantas, João Felix and Umaro Embalo are all winning their second Champions League as teenagers.

    77bzMyz.png

I'm not surprised anymore, but I've still never seen anything like this before.

The league was simple, slight improvement on last season; albeit with an improved defence, but still goal shy.

    AjxeVXc.png

    pqg8Pa7.png

Tactically, we are still exactly the same - and will be for the next few seasons. Development-wise, I have a few updates - I'd really like to take a bit more time and do a proper comparison to my previous save.

More thorough update to follow :onmehead:

HI. I see that you change sometimes, a few times (tigth marking, I think is the first time), could talk about that?
