I have been told by those more knowledgeable than me that the ECWC going to the next best league team is hardcoded because that's how the Europa League works with a cup runner up.

I re-ran your file again, cleared registered teams in European Cup and UEFA Cup. Vitesse representing Holland in CWC, Rapid Vienna, 2nd in Austria league, representing Austria in CWC , not LASC!

There really is no pattern to the editor! It's very very tricky and very very annoying.

The European Cup is running fine on the 2nd test with your file after clearing registered teams. To be clear, I searched for the European Cup again in the database and cleared registered teams from there.

I spent a good while last night actually naming the correct entrants and it fixed it. So clearing it sorts it out? That would have saved me some time. I'm in the middle of doing the ECWC, so might just clear them all instead and see what happens. Yes you're right about Ajax, the same happened with Austria. Salzburg did the double. I have physically put LASK in their place as losing finalists. I wonder if the game will still choose them if I clear everything? Having said all this, though, there were no registered teams in the ECWC when I looked and the game was pulling through the wrong teams in the first season, which is why I started to input them all manually.

Clearing the registered teams list worked for me.

I've had a brainwave to sort out the problem in the European Cup when a team does the league and European Cup double. Traditionally, there was no need for UEFA to invite the holders back the following season as the team had already qualified by winning its national top division league. I've tried to enter each national top division in Europe under the qualified teams list- last winner of competition.

But I've now got an error that says Error in Nation Rules- European Champions Cup (2021) and UEFA Cup Winners Cup (2022) have different years set.

Have you ever seen this before?

Once I get this sorted for the European Cup, hopefully, I plan to tackle the CWC in the same manner and tick the runners up back up box under last winner of competition. Is this what you have done to sort put the CWC runners up problem?

I don't know how but I managed to completely overlook the incorrect qualifiers in the first season. Some kind soul on Steam informed me earlier, and I think I have discovered where the problem lies. I am in the process of testing the new file. I have removed the download for the time being and will replace it when it is in good working order. Apologies to those who are using it. I am of the opinion that the competitions are working correctly after the first season. If anyone knows otherwise could you let me know here. Thankyou

I had a look and I cleared the list of registered teams for the European Cup and it seems to have done the trick. (Mightnt do any harm to also clear the registered teams list for the UEFA Cup).

Interestingly, I don't know if you've noticed that Ajax did the league and cup double in 2020/21. PSV finished 2nd in the league, AZ 3rd. Ajax beat Vitesse Arnhem in the Dutch Cup final. The Dutch European reps for 2021/22 are right when I ran a test save and Vitesse are Holland's rep in the 2021/22 CWC as would've traditionally been the case.

Disappointingly, the game seems to be pulling the league runners up in subsequent seasons for the CWC in cases where a league and cup double is won. It would be great to know why it's right in season one!

  4. Hi

I'd be very grateful if a person more knowledgeable than I could assess this laptop for FM only, I play no other games, and general usage i.e nothing more complicated than internet browsing and emails. I don't do any complicated things like video editing and all that.

My budget is 1k euro so this maxes it.

    Many thanks.

Always found this a bit odd really, it's such a bog standard position that you would think there would be plenty of players for it. I understand there not being many raumdeuters, for example, but WM barely has any instructions beyond 'stand on the wing'.

Who plays WM in real life?

As a further aside, I've always wanted to make a solid 4141 with WMs with maybe a high mentality to get players forward (like Guardiola's Man City did in FM 16). Never managed it, always found there was no penetration and my striker was always isolated.

WM is perhaps an outdated role due to the prevalence of 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 and inverted wingers.

They were very common in the lopsided 4-4-2/ 4-4-1-1s of British football from Englands World Cup win in 1966 up until the mid 00s. A winger on one side and a tucked in centre mid/ wide mid on the other, which gave the somewhat classic British 4-4-2 shape. Forest employed this shape to win back to back European Cups and this asymmetric shape became a staple of British football during the 80s.

I've always used WMs in possession based 4-4-2s much like the classic Liverpool pass and move systems of the 1970s and 1980s. I think WMs are essential to possession centric 4 man midfields.

Football has moved on and FM reflects this. I generally find converting good all round CMs into WMs gives the most success. E.g. Wijnaldum and Keita from the FM21 Liverpool squad, who incidentally also happen to hold the classic LFC LM and RM numbers, 5 and 8 respectively.

Miles ruled out the release on Friday at 10 to 1. Citing that they missed the cut off for green light.

Whatever issue they are working on, we'll know they fixed it by then and can expect the beta to drop today if no on says they missed it. I imagine it needs confirmed by 12 so they can get approvals needed from steam etc to go live. Fingers crossed

That is certainly the way I read Miles tweet last Friday too. I would be surprised if the Beta doesn't drop today.

  7. Liverpool.

Although I might change the habit of a lifetime and manage another PL club on full release. I'm thinking about Arsenal and an Invincibles inspired 4-4-2.

I used to always have a Liverpool save, attempting to restore us to the winning machine of 1970s and 1980s.

I love recreations. Tactically it would be a 4-4-1-1 pass and move, signing up and coming U-23s, technique training and appointing former players to the backroom team.

Anyway, Klopp is well on the way to restoring the Red Machine of yesteryear. The downside for me Fm wise is the challenge has gone out of managing Liverpool. I won the Treble in my first FM20 season with a Klopp 4-3-3. Absolutely annihilated anybody that came our way.

Recreating Wenger's Arsenal of 2002-04 does appeal and I'll be doing a bit of research between now and full release.

I've been complaining and raising bug reports for the entirety of FM20's life because the ME was terrible regarding on-ball decision making, defensive awareness, and central play. The blog mentions these three things at the top as areas of improvement! I could not be any happier. My excitement for FM21 just skyrocketed

Yes. 100%. I wasn't looking forward to the BETA anywhere near as much as previous editions if truth be told. I purchased more out of habit and to see how the new recruitment module works.

Two major bugbears of mine, from Fm18 on and from when scouting was overhauled, are the unintelligent and unrealistic scouting module within the game and the decreasing quality of the match engine, definitely from Fm19. The notorious idiocy of wingplay drove me demented to such an extent that I attempted to go back to commentary only. That didn't work and I more or less gave up on FM20 a few months back.

Like everything else, the proof will be in the pudding once the game settles down after the beta. I really hope these improvements turn out to be so. The new non-ME additions released in the past two or three have great potential with a polished ME.

Just pre-ordered on CDKeys, which is clearly selling the product as FM21 (EU) + beta.

However, I get this when I click on 'add code'

I ordered through CDKeys as well. I checked My Account tab yesterday morning on my CDKeys page and the code was there. I entered it in Steam and the game appeared in my Steam library. Hopefully that puts your mind at rest if you haven't received your code yet.

I was very unhappy with the vagueness of the reply I received after purchase when, like you, I didn't receive my code instantly. I won't be buying from them next year. An extra 5 or 10 quid won't hurt to buy from an official Sega retailer. I consider that cheap for peace of mind that I haven't been scammed. A lesson learned I suppose.

No more waiting, FM21 feature information is here with this headline feature showcase, delivered by life-long FM fan Spencer Owen who sheds more light on this year's key feature areas.

FM21's new additions and game upgrades put all of the focus on you, delivering new levels of depths and drama through improvements to these key areas:

    - Interaction
    - Matchday
    - Recruitment
    - End of Season

More information will arrive on October 19th with our headline feature blogs, diving into much more detail, laced with gameplay screenshots. What are you most looking forward to getting your hands on?

FM21 is coming November 24th, pre-purchase now for 10% off and early access, participating digital retailers only -

The new recruitment module is what I'm looking forward to the most outside of improvements to the ME (wingers crossing and one on ones). It looks more realistic and modern so hopefully the DoF, Ass Man make intelligent suggestions. For example, I think we need a new left back. Who would your top 3 recommendations be etc. I dont want 3 32 year old has beens!

Klopp usually fields a 4-3-3 WIDE formation in defensive phase. This may differ if protecting a lead or some other exceptional circumstance, in which the team may defend in a 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2.

My take on our main formation (based on my following of LFC and the analysis mentioned in the posts above) is as follows:

    DllgrqB.jpg

The two outer center mids (Hendo and Gini) are first and foremost required to cover for the wide defenders. They usually fan out wide and work hard. I didn't choose BBM due to the roam from position PI, in addition to the inherent Stay Wide PI that comes with the CAR.

It is well known that Robertson is more defensively accomplished than TAA, but overlaps Mane often. That is exactly what is written on the tin for the FB-A duty. TAA is give license to do everything, hence a CWB-S. Attack duty would be very irresponsible, which isn't TAA.

Fab sees a lot of the ball and pings passes all over the field, hence the DLP-D role.

Firmino is no doubt a F9, Mane an Inside Forward on support to give him more defensive responsibility, while I choose RMD for Salah since I see that he usually wanders looking for space, while his runs off the ball are very RMD style.

VVD gets a BPD on cover. He is always the last defender covering space, and making intelligent passes to the front three.

This just all theoretical, and I didn't test it, but might do so soon.

Interesting take on the formation. I do agree that in the defensive phase (as per photo above) that the midfield 3 is flat rather than a DM triangle.

In my most recent FM session a few weeks back, I tried a balanced mentality with higher tempo, higher DL with an offside trap. I might try a much higher DL with a higher LOE for compactness. VVD as a BPD-De and Gomez as a CB-De plus fewer risky passes. Robertson as a WB-A, TAA as a WB-S. When I get FM back up and running , I'm going to try TAA as a IWB-S with an overlap instruction. From memory, he has "runs down right with ball". Thanks to @Rashidi for this idea. That may create the interesting variety to his game as in real life.

PPMs wise I definitely agree on "switching play to other flank" for TAA. As has become fully obvious this season, TAA is more of a playmaker, Robertson more direct. Other PPMs that I might try for the FBs are "hit early crosses" for TAA, "get into opposition area" for Robbo, particularly if TAA has the switch play PPM. (For those who are interested, like me, and as I'm a believer in tactical trends being cyclical, the great side of the late 70s/ early 80s was similarly balanced on the flanks. Alan Kennedy was a direct quasi winger, Neal a more rounded footballer who similarly varied his game by drifting infield or staying wide to put a cross in. Maybe Klopp was inspired by Paisley! As an aside, I'd love to see @Rashidi interpretation of Paisley's system).

Midfield my role allocation was as per above, except Fabinho as a CM(D). Why?

The biggest issue I have with replicating present Liverpool (and also Dalglish btw) is Firmino getting bypassed by balls to the flanks. For this reason, I'm going to try fewer risky passes on the midfield 3. I want the ball either to get out wide to the FBs or into Bobby's feet, with Mane and Salah running beyond him. Mane as a IF-A and Salah as a RMD. I think I'm half ways there with Bobby as a DLF(S) with roam from position. In theory there should be plenty of space between a workmanlike midfield 3 and Salah and Mane.

I want to create that diamond in  the middle and if I can get the ball into Bobby's feet on a regular basis, then I think that's the closest I can get to a replication.

What would the thoughts be on an extremely wide width to stretch the play for the FBs with focus through the middle to get the ball into Bobby's feet?

Version 1.5 is now available for download. This will likely be my last big update until FM21 but I'll still be working away on bits and pieces that I wasn't able to include in this update, such as the Club World Cup, and any other unexpected errors that show up.

Stay safe everyone. Hope you all enjoy the new content

Well done Sir! Looking forward to starting my final save on FM20 (provided there'll be a FM21!) using one of the updated files. KUTGW.

@irish kopite Had to go with 2 teams per nation. By the time I got to the group stage when trying 1 per nation, there were only 6 teams left after the qualifying rounds lol. It's all working now though

The UEFA Champions League winner and UEFA Europa League winner will automatically qualify for the following season. The most a single nation can have in the competition is 3 (England will start the 2019-20 season with 3 due to Liverpool and Chelsea winning the competitions last season).

    Really appreciated. Thanks very much!

I'm not sure if that would be possible given how the qualifying rounds are set up, but I'll look into it. I was looking for 1 more to top the project off at 50 files lol

A couple of months ago I tried your file that contained the 1980s style old European Cup knockout format with top 32 national champs only and attempted to convert the first round to a group stage. I couldn't manage it. Just a suggestion for a shortcut!

  16. On 31/05/2020 at 17:28, Carlito85 said:

Alternates of existing files, but with the UEFA Champions League winner automatically qualifying for the competition in the next season to defend their crown. There are also some tweaks of existing competition formats, such as the 1997-1999 file (24-team group stage instead of 32), and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup added to the 2021-2024 format in separate files.

In terms of 'new' content, I'll be adding a real retro file into the mix (1973-74), with replays for the UEFA Champions League/Cup Winners' Cup finals, and 2-legged finals for the UEFA Cup.

I have a suggestion Carlito85, albeit perhaps late in the day. Could you try to include a file with the current Champions League format (8 groups x 4 teams, group stage before Christmas, knockout from February- May), except only national league champions. Champions League winner automatically qualifies for the following seasons competition, of course! Many thanks.

You would need to check the seeding in the UEFA Cup to make sure no teams are missing. If a number is wrong and doesn't correspond properly with the amount of teams in that round then there could be one or two missing. Did you edit anything to do with the UEFA Cup?

    An update.

Every qualification category now has a seeding in the nations list from 0 for the CL winners to 10 for Intertoto Cup reps and I've linked them to the various rounds of the competitions where these teams enter. There is no longer any duplication.

The Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Cup winners are automatically qualifying for the following seasons competitions respectively, as are the Champions League winners.

However, I have yet to see a scenario whereby a team does a domestic cup/ UEFA Cup double to see what happens. By right that team should enter the CWC. I have gone so far as making the Cup Winners Cup superior to the UEFA Cup in seeding terms, as was the case with the old European competitions. I was delighted with how the following scenario played out. RB Leipzig won the Cup Winners Cup in 19/20 ( how very CWC  I might add!). Bayern won the German cup. Both teams finished 2 and 4 in the Bundesliga respectively and both entered the CWC the following season. The game simply filled the remaining 2 UEFA Cup places with the next available teams in the league. 3, 5, 6, 7 qualified for the UEFA Cup.

Celtic won the Scottish league and cup double in 19/20, Hibs finished runners up in the league and cup. Rangers and Aberdeen finished 3 and 4 in the league respectively. Scotland's European reps in 20/21 were CL- Celtic, CWC- Hibs, UEFA Cup- Rangers and Aberdeen.

In some respects the specific seeding system is really working.

However, there are a few annoying things I need to sort. A big one for me is the following scenario. Man City won the league, cup and CL Treble in 19/20. In the 20/21 champions league Liverpool entered the competition I guess as England's representative as city qualified as past winners (this is how the game puts it). That shouldn't happen as the CL should be for domestic or reigning European champions only.

Are there conditional scenarios that can be set that anybody knows of? Using the above example, if a team qualifies twice effectively by doing a league/ CL double, can the game be told to enter that team next year but do not enter the domestic or CL runners-up?

Also, the way I have the seeding system set up, there can be 9 teams who auto qualify for the group stage when there should only be 8. The game corrects this by only taking 7 qualifiers from the play-off round and the 8th team disappears from the competition.

  18. 23 minutes ago, palmamiguel92 said:

Instead of imputing the holders in the phase menu i added the holders as the top spot in the countries menu, i found this worked because the order you index the teams qualifications matters a lot. It reminded me a lot of the times i was programming arrays in C# back in the days eheh. Also i change the other between CWC and UEFA Cup because CWC had priority back in the days.

    So I did this

Index 6 (because i last added) Champions League holders

Index 0 - 8 first european seeded nations champions (Spain, England, Italy, Germany, France, Russia, Portugal, Netherlands)

Index 1 - Rest of the 46 champions from each nation (these will do a first round with 23 joining the holders and seeded teams in the round of 32)

index 2 - Cup Winners Cup - 10 nations with best rank

index 3 - The rest 44 nations (again, to play a first round, with 22 joining the 10 seeded teams for the round of 32

index 4 - UEFA Cup - 2nd places of the 8 first seeded nations

    index 5- Rest 112 teams

Thank you. I'll definitely give this a try! A very traditional set-up by the looks of things.

It may be something I look at for FM21 but for this year I'm mainly looking at one more update, bugs/errors aside.

If Liverpool are showing up in the UEFA Cup it could be due to the UEFA Cup seedings having a team missing. Normally by default it grabs the biggest teams to fill in the gaps so you may see the likes of Liverpool, Man City, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus or Chelsea etc in there when they shouldn't be if that is the case.

Is there any way that I can stop this happening. Using the Liverpool example, the game will auto pull England's UEFA Cup reps from the next available PL team down, bypassing the team that has qualified for the CL as defending champions?

  20. 36 minutes ago, Carlito85 said:

You would need to reconfigure the seedings in the Continent > Teams tab. There needs to be a spot free at some stage in the competition for the last winner. The extra spot (if they already qualified via the league) will then likely go to the next highest team in the winner's domestic league. If they didn't qualify via the league then they would just take that Champions League spot as normal.

You would also need to add an instruction in whichever round it is you want them to enter that grabs the last winner of the Champions League. This would be in the Teams tab in the stage you want them to enter.

    Thank you very much.

Using file 32 (95-97 CL structure) I edited the seedings from 1-8 to 1-7 for the group stage. I then edited the seedings for the qualifying round from 9-24 to 8-23. I added a rule in both areas you highlighted that brings the previous season's winner in. Very clear instruction, thank you again! That works!

One thing I have noticed when I loaded up a new game to do a quick test, Liverpool are in both the CL and UEFA Cup, naturally as PL runners up.

How can I get them out of the UEFA Cup?
