Manchester United F.C is an English football club, and is based at Old Trafford Football Ground, Stretford, Manchester. The club is one of the most successful in the country, having won the FA Premier League/Football League 15 times, FA Cup 11 times, the League Cup twice, the European Cup twice and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup once. The club has had the highest average attendance in English football the past 50 seasons.

The club was formed as Newton Heath (L&YR) F.C. in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. After nearing bankruptcy in 1902, the club was taken over by J.H. Davies who changed its name to Manchester United. The Old Trafford Football Ground was bombed during the Second World War, leading the club to seek charity from their then-illustrious neighbours Manchester City, who allowed them to play their games at Maine Road for a period. United appointed Sir Matt Busby as manager after the Second World War, and his then-unheard-of policy of producing most of the players through the club's youth team brought great success, with the club winning the Football League in 1956 and 1957. This success was halted by the Munich air disaster of 1958, in which eight of the club's players died. It was thought that the club might fold, but instead went on to win the football league in 1965 and 1967, and the European Cup in 1968.

The club did not see success again until the 1990s and early 2000s when Alex Ferguson guided it to eight league championships in eleven years, most recently in the 2002-3 season. In 1999, Manchester United became the only team to win the UEFA Champions League, FA Premier League and the FA Cup in the same season. The club had been run as a Public Limited Company since 1991, and an attempted takeover by Rupert Murdoch had been blocked by the British Government in 1999, but in 2005 Malcolm Glazer completed a hostile takeover of the club which plunged the club into massive debt as his bid was based on borrowing most of the money.

United are close to finalising a deal for Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Speculation in Friday's tabloids claimed that a deal to bring the 25-year-old England international to Old Trafford was set to be announced.

When asked by MUTV about the alleged move, Sir Alex replied: "We're close to that. There have been some agreements on part of it but I think it’s to be finalised over the day or so.â€

The Gaffer also went on to deny rumours of a swoop for Carrick's club and international team-mate Jermain Defoe, and admitted he is less than hopeful about signing Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

“Well there has been no interest from us on the Tottenham situation," he said. "We made a move for Carrick and that’s the only thing we did, that was the only player of interest to us at this moment in time.

"I think it will stay that way. I’ve got young Rossi to consider and I want to see him progress as a centre forward. He;s more likely to be staying here now.

" With Gattuso, we were always waiting to see what happened to AC Milan and now they're in the European Cup and still in Serie A, there’s very little chance of progress as he’s such an important player for them.†</div></BLOCKQUOTE> </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Harper saves it without the deflection, I'm sure of it. When a shot's deflected in by an attacking player, it's generally the last to touch it who gets given it anyway.

Henry backing Scholes

By Graeme Bailey - Created on 20 Jan 2007

Thierry Henry insists the rejuvenated Paul Scholes should take the Player of the Year award.

The former England international has had a sensational season at the heart of Manchester United's midfield and is one of the prime factors behind their great season to date.

And Arsenal captain Henry has no doubt who will be getting his vote.

"For years Paul Scholes has been one of the best players in the Premiership," said Henry.

"He's incredible. He's come back into the team after his eye injury and he's playing so well, like he's never been away.

"He has always been under-rated throughout his career. He's a team player, a one and two-touch footballer who makes good decisions on the pitch and makes his team play.

"I don't understand why he has never won the player of the year. A guy like that should have won it long ago." </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Well played Henry icon_cool.gif

Brilliant play by Ronaldo puts Rooney one on one with the keeper, not much time to think and tries to round the kepper, Lee gets a hand to it and the ball is around the Watford area before being Cleared to heinze who blasts it, deflected to rooney 20 yards out who blasts just wide.

Just now Richardson wastes a brilliant chance, blasting high and wide at the near post.

Very good start to the second half

Well I'll begin with the italian police/crowd trouble , Italy is a ****ing hole and UEFA really need to get to grips with the italian clubs because it's happened to many times in the past (even when I went to Milan in 99, the police where heavy-handed but because there wasn't this much TV exposure it wasn't picked up on by the media). Even though i'm saying this nothing will get done because UEFA only seem to punish english clubs, now i'm not saying there wern't all the united fans were angels but theres various better ways to control a football match, can't believe how much better the policing/stewarding over here is. Typical scouser response in this thread , but nothing more than I expected really.

AS for the on-field matters, thought before Scholesy was sent packing (he should know better after missing the final in 99 and could cost us the tie)we were starting to get some rythm to our play and started to knock the ball around pretty well. No chance with either of there goals (although VDS could have probably done better with their second). As for our goal what a superb counter-attacking move with Ronnie and Ole both doing some sterling work and an accomplished finish from Rooney, such a big goal. Can't wait for the second leg , the atmosphere is going to be ****ing ace.

MoM: Ronnie

2nd: Carrick

Nah, I'm not saying van Nistelrooy was a bad player 'cos he wasn't, but Man Utd are playing a lot better this season without him than we were with him.

Admittedly, that might be down to other factors, but I still think we're better off without him.

I can accept he's crap, see DJX2, Bellion etc at least they gave there all, this arse doesn't give a flying fig about us, a friend of mine was seeing one of the reserve players, I got her to ask him about Richardson and he thinks he's a arsehole, I've spent an utter fortune folllowing United this season, that arsehole earns more than I make in a year in a week, by all accounts he's an arrogant little arse around town either.

Oh and don't get me started on that sodding myspace </div></BLOCKQUOTE> </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

your reasons for booing KR:

1) He doesn't care about us? How do you know this? He's no Gary Neville but he acts the same as most players do towards the fans.

2) A reserve players dislikes him... (OK?)

3) He earns more money than you. You boo him because he earns more money than you? WTF?

4) He is arrogant off the field. Loads the highly paid footballers will have fast cars and drive around in them like gangsters. Why does it bother you that KR does it?

5) His myspace. He has photos of himself looking like an utter c0ck so lets boo him?

I don't think any of the things above really bother you, it's more to do with you hating his skin colour. icon_wink.gif

he's not had that bad a season. there was a bit of an obvious carry-over from the ridiculous way he was rushed back for the world cup, a couple of dips in form which every striker goes through and he's been overshadowed to an extent by Ronnie and other players. what's really important here for me is that it's how young players react to setbacks and periods of below-par form that is crucial, and he's come storming back in the last month or so with brilliant performances in all competitions, right when we've needed him to do so.

23 goals so far with a bagload of assists is a career season in pure statistical terms too, and while i appreciate stats don't tell the full picture, i certainly feel that some of the bad press he's had this season has been way over the top.

Doubt even Chelsea would have enough money to prise him away from Milan. Would love to see him in a United shirt though, maybe next season when Scholes would only be able to make 15 or so appearences a season unless of course we could play him out wide and have a midfield like this:

Ronaldo - Hargreaves - Scoles - Carrick - Kaka

Rooney up front with support from the flanks and a central midfielder bambing forward.
