Right so are United going to be wearing them while playing footie or is it just for show, like a one off thing?

I was watching some highlights of Portugal - Belgium earlier tonight with Nani doing his stuff. I thought they were from tonights game but they were from another recent game between the two.

Anyway both Nani and Anderson have been signed and both players have spoken off their delight at signing for the club.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">

Nani delight at dream move

Sporting Lisbon winger Nani has expressed his happiness after agreeing a deal with Manchester United.

Nani, along with Porto starlet Anderson, held successful talks with Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz and chief executive David Gill earlier this week.

He agreed terms with the club and is now looking forward to linking up with his new team-mates.

Nani, who has been likened to Portuguese compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, accepts it will be difficult to establish himself in the United side.

But he insists he is relishing the prospect of playing in the Premiership.

"This is a dream. I am ready for the challenge," he enthused.

"It won't be easy to get a place in the first team.

"To play with Cristiano Ronaldo again will be fantastic."

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">

Anderson revels in United move

Anderson insists his dreams have come true after Manchester United struck a deal with Porto for his services.

The 19-year-old Brazilian will join United subject to medicals and a work-permit - and although he does not qualify automatically for a permit under UK rules, he is almost certain to gain the required permissions on appeal.

Anderson has long been tracked by Chelsea - who have been watching him closely for over two years, but United have swooped to secure his signature along with Nani of Sporting Lisbon.

Both players are rated amongst the best in the world for their ages and Anderson admits he cannot wait to link-up with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.

"Manchester is the club of my dreams," stated Anderson to Gestifute.

"Gremio was my first club, but soon I followed to Porto but it still has a big place in my heart, it is a club which is very important in my life - but the fact is I have dreamed of playing for Manchester and now that is realised."

Anderson is arriving in a deal worth more than £15 million, but he insists he does not want to think about a fee - only about his future at Old Trafford.

"I know my value, in Manchester I will carry on the work that have developed with Porto, but I want to get better and realise my dreams," he said.

"I am prepared for everything - my motivation is great and the fact you can be in the same team as a great player as Cristiano Ronaldo as well as Rooney and many others, and to be trained by Alex Ferguson is just something that you could only imagine - but now I will realise this.

"What can I say, this is the biggest dream in the world!"

1. Yes the commentator did say that he was being linked with Juve & Madrid as well as us.

2. He's wrong. He's ours.

& in news of other shocking journalism (via the BBC Gossip column), the NOTW are saying that we're on the verge of picking up Javier Saviola for £7million after fending off a host of other clubs.

Now I know we've not exactly been spendthrift in the last week or so & we do, on the whole, pay over the odds for players, but we're not going to pay Barca £7mill for a player whose contract runs out at the end of this month are we? And thats before we get into the whole would he fit in with us and perform well in the Premiership side of things...

& for the record I think that given our technical qualities as a team and the movement that the players that would be around him offer, as well as his own ability level, he could do well for us. Whether it makes sense to pursue him or not just because he's available I'm not so sure.

No way should we be offering £7mill for Saviola if his contract runs out at the end of the month, how ever he is a very good player and has been singled out at Barca despite always seeming to score goals and do well.

Another midget up front icon_cool.gif. Would take him in a heart beat for 3 or 4 mill or pref on a free.

And fwiw...

I'm not sure I'm keen on the new shirt. Can't say I'm enamoured with whatever is going on with that white strip on the back of the shirt especially.

It’s funny how numbers come to signify certain things and the faulty application of them can just seem wrong. I am of course talking about the squad number changes mooted above. Personally I’d prefer if Rooney didn’t lose the #8 shirt and move to the #10 vacated by Ruud just because Fergie doesn’t want to give it to Hargreaves.

Although he’s a striker who likes to play “in the holeâ€, Rooney isn’t your traditional playmaking forward either in my opinion and I’ve come to associate him with the #8 now, which I think suits him given that two of its most recent wearers were also players with a bit of “fight†about them (Ince & Butt). Additionally, since squad numbers were introduced, and although Becks wore the #10 for one season before Eric relinquished the #7, other than him it’s been given to a player who does embody a playmaking centre-forward, Teddy Sheringham, or our chief man up top, Sparky and Ruud in their respective tenures with the club.

As has been suggested previously Hargreaves can quite easily be given the #4 or the #23 when/if Gabby makes his move or Richardson is show the door, with one number suiting a DM and the other being “his number†from his time at Bayern. Then Anderson can be given the #10 on the basis that he’s Ronaldinho-esq in style if not yet in stature & then Nani can have the #17, which suits a winger really.

The 'red devils' bit on the kit makes me very suspicious as to it's legitimacy. We've never really play on that as a nickname - unless of course it's inclusion is based on a misguided attempt to 'Americanise' us even more icon_mad.gif

Squad numbers - my pro ev game has Anderson #10, Nani #17 and Hargreaves #23 with Richardson languishing as an unregistered player. As it should be.

Forgot which website i saw the Saviola news on last night but needless to say i had a good laugh. The report went something like this;

"Man Utd have been alterted to the fact that they can sign Javier Saviola, who is available for free on a bosman at the end of the month, for a cut price £7m".

Must have been a rival site for tribal football but yet again other websites all mention the £7m stuff too which has me baffled. At first i thought it was a contract fee but i cant see Saviola costing that much even if hes free.

And hes 25 now so it isnt compensation.

Saviola would be ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffb on a free.

Must've missed the squad number talk first time round but i agree with jimlad. and i'll just add that players getting numbers that are 'wrong' for their position, especially defensive midfielders or defenders getting forward numbers, is annoying.

That good reliable source the NOTW has it on their website:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> SIR ALEX FERGUSON is eyeing Argentine sensation Javier Saviola.

He believes the 25-year-old striker could be the final piece in his Manchester United jigsaw — and at a bargain price.

Saviola is set to quit Barcelona this month on a Bosman free, paving the way for a possible move to Old Trafford for less than £7 million. Any deal on offer would be for around three years and worth about £50,000 a week.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Bolton, Valencia and Real Madrid are also interested but United are Saviola's preferred choice.

</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Seems the £7m might be his wages? £50,000 a week for 3 years is approx £7.8m? Close enough for your average reporter at that paper.

Not seen this posted yet, from the official site:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> United have confirmed that goalkeeper Ben Foster has visited a specialist in order to get to the bottom of a complaint in his right knee.

After two seasons on loan at Watford, the 24-year-old has been recalled to Old Trafford ahead of the new campaign and was expected to challenge for the number one spot.

However, having been forced to withdraw from the England 'B' squad that defeated Albania last week after suffering a recurrence of the pain in the same knee that has troubled him in recent months.

"Ben has seen a specialist and they are investigating an existing knee problem," a club spokesperson told ManUtd.com.

The England international joined United from Stoke City in July 2005.

Although he has played for the Reds during pre-season friendly matches, he is yet to make his competitive debut for United.

Like I said it's BS as a story, or at least the money part is, no one in their right minds would stump up cash for a player less than 30 days away from his contract running out when they can talk to him and agree a pre-contract for nothing but his signing on fee and wages.

As for the footballing side, I can actually see him fitting in for us and nipping in to score bags of goals in and around the 6-yard box as well as contributing positively to our build up play around the edge of the area without forgetting that his role would be to act as the main finisher for the team. He's always been a busy striker when I've seen him but his technical quality means he doesn't have to be a tenacious and scrappy little striker like Dickov or someone like that. If Fergie is considering or has considered the likes of Owen & Defoe I don't know why he wouldn't consider Saviola.

But then we get to the "is there really space for him & and does he give us what we need issue". But if you concede that we need an actual top-level striker – a guy who does well at getting goals regularly - the closest we have in our ranks is Saha, fit or not (especially because OGS is arguably the best finisher we have but he doesn’t have the legs to contribute as effectively as we’d like him to), then there is a case to be made for him.

Rooney & Rossi are touted as or function best as free-forwards and it should be noted that the former has slugged his way to a goal average close to a very respectable 1 in 2 return this season & the latter has essentially done just as well in about 20 games for Parma. However, despite the fact that these stats show that both are capable of getting goals, I personally don’t see Fergie wanting to use either in this role for any reason but necessity since it seems his ideal flowing attack tactic will use Rooney, Ronaldo and one other behind a mobile finisher.

Yes we’ll have more options next season for those “behind the front-man†roles to allow Rooney and Rossi to act as finishers if needs be, but that takes away a lot of their respective games IMO and Anderson and Nani aren’t going to be thrown into the deep end however much quality they have. As a result Giggs is still going to get his fair share of games, Scholesy should still be heavily involved, Ronaldo is obviously a first choice, Carrick and Hargreaves will probably switch around based on form/the opposition initially and so that leaves Rooney and one other in our front 6. And even if he’s got a massive return this season I don’t want us to rely on Ronny getting 20+ a season from wide areas and I don’t think that Rooney should be viewed as the primary source of goals for the team either, and given the records of the other players in the above suggested front main front six that means that we need another regular source of goals from somewhere.

As stated above, based on who we have at the minute, Saha is our most likely source of these goals, and what’s really frustrating is that when you realise that he’s basically been AWOL since Christmas, he could have very well got near 30 in all competitions if he’d maintained his form etc. After Saha it’s Smithy who has the next best claim and while his strong points are that he’s strong and mobile (good alternative to have vs. Rossi based on physique), even if he played 40 games I couldn’t see him getting more than 15 in all competitions (although his build-up contribution would be valuable obviously). With Dong unlikely to make the grade (IMO) and no one else from the Reserves/Youth set-up ready to make a push (obviously I’d like confirmation on that from Nick/Taz), that means that we either sacrifice the certain qualities of Rooney/Rossi in order to make them scorer in chief, or we make moves to bring someone else in.

Now, on the basis that we’ve probably spent all our money, but we still need a striker, this leaves two paths for the club to go down. One; the club makes a concerted effort to trim the fat and raise money through sales because if they don’t even spending money on the likes of Anelka, Owen & Defoe, let alone considering Torres/Berbatov/Villa/Eto’o et al. isn’t viable. If they don’t do this it means looking around for top-notch Bosman’s, making a player of Saviola’s quality an option that needs to be considered seriously. Ultimately, even if he’s arguably not the ideal option in terms of style and physical stature (a fast, good in the air, injury free Saha-esq replacement…Anelka icon_wink.gif ) you can’t turn your nose up at a player who’s averaged between 1 in 2 and 1 in 3 at the top level for the clubs he’s played, and he’s more of a natural goal-getter with a style that isn’t going to clash with our other attacking players like, say, Tevez would because he does his best work outside the box (yet another forward we’ve been linked with but who would/will in all likelihood cost too much).
