Wasn't Intertoto just a glorified pre-season tourney? It was a different era back then but this gave teams an opportunity to play abroad.

you're right mate. I'm just remembering the 1995 format.

I am currently working on some edits to 'fix' the money flows. Taxation will be a thing.... Also, I am checking all teams for the amount of players. Should have done that earlier, but didn't realise how big some teams had become.

Still, the default game has several teams starting at 80-100 players  So the fixing seems to be less of a problem than I feared.

Two remarks to make so you are forewarned

I am getting my first Covid-vaccination this afternoon, which might mean I am offline for a few days. No idea whether it will hit me.

At one moment this thread will disappear for a few days. Don't worry, it will only mean I am preparing the thread for the Release.

Fyi, my updates will be a bit less the coming. Have a few really rough days which keeps me from editing. Not sure it is the vaccination stuff or just in general.

I have checked my plan and things in general are still lining up to be finished in time. No worries about that.

A few of the things reported I will reply to for extra information, but that's about it for the moment. Maybe I am going to do some alternative history to get my mind on track.

First financial test on Man City looks promising for the first season. The next few seasons they start big time though with up to 200M per season to upgrade the team. If I can reign in Man City, the rest should be doable.

Currently in doubt whether I make the DDR  playable down to 3 or 4 levels - at 4th level where talking 20 to 30 leagues.

I will create the 4th tier for realism and promo/relegation to be realistic, but I'm not sure if I?ll actually create the rules.

I am coming close to a solution for the money imbalance and since it is a rather big one, I want to share it with you, so we can discuss it.

Anyway, in another thread in the main editors hideaway we had a discussion on how to balance the (European) football world. I have used Man City as my 'victim' there to test out effects.

It looks like the best solution is:

  • To remove all other income from the teams from (at least the English league and do the same for some teams from nations like France, Germany, Italy and Spain
  • Change the taxes so that higher revenue is taxed higher (this had an effect in some nations without me even touching the income!)

These are quite big changes, but at the same time I realised that it makes playing a lot more interesting. As the players of older versions now, or people who usually start at lower levels, balancing income and expenditure is part of the game. Can you buy player A and hunt for glory? The way some teams work this is pretty much not possible anymore. The only thing that happens is that your bankaccount blows up if you managing team A and all you can do is see whether you and the other Evil 12 teams can buy that same wunderkind for an insane amount of money. Removing all that income means teams have to work with the starting balance they have, will get some (but probably much less) income and really watch their spending. It's weird that it has to be done this way, but seeing the amount of money going around, I think this is the way to bring back spending to normalcy.

seems like you are trying to create socialist utopia in football world... at least it is in line with the database :D

joking aside, i have no idea how the economy in the game works, but I feel top transfer fees for nations can be used to keep the transfer prices at desired level. What is the desired level, though is completely different question. I assume only testing the hypothesis you proposed will shed some light.

Yeah, I am hoping to find a range of things that work or overdo it, so I know the outer limits and from there can finetune.

At that same time Roy Race 9 is doing something similar, so we are working together in looking at solution. Interesting bit of economy research. The ultimate solution will be closer to lowering income amounts to a certain level that those 600M extremes are gone.

Certain clubs get insane amount of money compared to other teams and there are a few sources of income that are just inflated bonuses like a trainings ground sponsor or something. The effect is visible though, I was able to get Man City down from Rich to Secure to OK finances.

Hopefully I can find somewhat of a sweet spot this weekend (which includes Monday!!!) and while the tests are running I am processing all feedback. A few competition remarks, but mostly data things.

Best thing to hear though is that people are enjoying the mod. And that's in the end what I am hoping for :)

Just seen this thread for the first time. It looks very detailed and in depth. Are you planning on editing the squads back to that era also, including the european leagues or will it only be the Eastern European team you do? Either way, good luck. Looks very impressive!

The Western teams will remain as they are now., except for West Germany, which has been split up obviously In Eastern Europe 5 nations have been extensively editied, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Albania, Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, The 1988 status quo has been worked on, but since some teams disappeared or got relegated for various reasons, not all teams from the late 80s are in the top level like they were back then.

Thanks! Any chances for beta tested now? I am interested.

No, the beta field has been filled. But in one month, you will play the real deal anyway.

One of the bigger data changes has been done. At the start some very big transfers would take place, adding a lot of money to the big money teams, helping their dominance. Those have been fixed, but it was a bit more than I hoped for (checking about 10,000 changes in 3 days.....).

Tonight I plan to finish some teamsize work and process some of the data changes I received. Things are going well.

Finances are fickle thing, but I am getting close to the solution. The moneystreams turn out to be one of the more complex things, but I slowly getting grip on how to limit. Luckily two other editors are helping out with research and sharing information.

Completely unrelated, but somehow still a bit related.
I was cleaning out my old hockey goalie gear, and found a few jerseys. 20 points if you can guess the name on the back of this jersey :D
Also found a CSKA hockey jersey and a jersey I had made for myself to match my goalie mask (which has a white wolverine and a big red star on the side (kidding you not)

Less than four weeks untill release. I am still processing data changes and looking at competition fixes, but I am coming to the point that most is just pure data digging and discussing stuff. Keep them coming!

Some issues I am looking into:

  • Yugoslav Cup
  • Draw for European Football Championship (and possibly others). This one could become bigger, since it could hit all international competition.

Other data stuff that is on my radar

  • Upgrading data for the East European countries to get them up a bit
  • Financials (ongoing). I am coming close to a solution.

For data research purposes I have now installed FM10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20 and 21. FM05 will follow. The reason why I haven't FM13 and 19 installed is because I didn't buy those :D
Unrelated to this project, I will use those versions also to search for data for a new project which will only be released after the next pandemic (based on the scopesize....).

I have finally managed to fix the dreaded European U21 championship call up problem where players kept being called up untill the end of the tournament. Finally!

Just a little point I came across reading an article about Oleg Romantsev... apparently in the late 80s the USSR High League had a rule where you only got a point for your first 5 draws. After that, so from your 6th draw of the league season onwards, you got no points for a draw. There was some issue with teams drawing loads of games and negative play away from home I believe...

Working on an update for the Yugoslav Cup. The current setup will stay as is, but gets a check on dates, to ensure everything runs smoothly. Additionally the qualification for the cup will be different with teams playing in preliminary rounds. The only thing I am still undecided on is whether this prelim cup is played in rounds prior to the First round of the Marshall Tito Cup, or played the season before. Anyone who can shed light on that?

Edit: I will have to create a sort of 2 year long cup, unless I can figure out how to create a qualiyfing cup for national competitions. This one might be more tricky that I thought.

For the beta testers playing in Yugoslavia, one of your beta testing colleagues found an error in the Marshall Tito Cup and I found the reason for it. It will be fixed in the final release.

The error was that the second semi final date was scheduled for a date before the first semi final date. Sloppy editing :(

So I have improved the World Cup U20 to the point that it has now 14 of 16 teams playing as U20 teams. Only the two African team keep escaping me.

I have now 5 continents working as expected and it needed 4 (!!) different ways of setting the teampicking..... In some ways the editor keeps surprising me. Now the question of the day is HOW does AFRICA work???

So there is progress and two steps back...... I am getting African U20 teams! But...... it turns out now the African U20 championship doesn't work anymore....

Edit: And baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack to that drawing board. :(

While I think about how I think about Africa in the U20 Africa cup of nations I am running a test on a new version of the Marshall Tito Cup.

It won't be the two years version, because I have just 18 days left and some more stuff to take care of, but it does have an improved teamselection based on how the preliminary rounds work. It also will do a testrun on the latest version of the financial editing.

Also on the menu is some data upgrading for the Easter European countries.

  • 2 weeks later...

Today is flag day, what is showing that things are slowly going towards the end. I am running another long run to see the result of my latest financial changes and while not perfect, this is much closer to what I was looking for. Some minor edits to be expected to the financials, but that's about.

I have a few researchthings on the menu the coming days while I am finalizing testing and then things should be done and released the 25th.

So you can expect the thread to disappear for a few days around the 22nd, 23th, 24th.

Working on improving the draws for tournaments. Good find by one of the beta testers found out that the draw for (in his case European Football Tournament) would put the 1st and 2nd of one pool together in the semifinal. I didn't see it happen in my big saves, but made sure it won't happen anymore. Apart from some minor data and financial work, that's all there is to be done. Yes, I am pretty much ready for release :)

Bread and games are the two most important things to control the mob. It was true when the Romans said it and still true when the Communists said it.

Test for the latest fixes is running right now. If that one is correct, I can run a test on some files with similar fixes.

And then it's only a bunch of data fixes that I have planned (yes, always data fixes ;) ) and we are done!

5 more days! 5 more days! 5 more days! :D

Hmmm ;)

On that subject, I managed to find an actual photo from that game, and no, not a digital one, but a real photo, which is signed by one of the players. Gifted to me and my sister after the tournament.

Bragging rights :D

The first post has been updated.

The previous released foreign player files and the flag files have been removed.

They have been replaced with version 1.0 of the Iron Curtain 2020 mod. So what are you waiting for? Go over and download!
