Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve played. Ready to give it another go.

I usually play with 8-10 leagues across 5-7 countries with roughly 60-100k players (I usually load all Europe and all South American players). I like the game to move fast and comfortable and I always play on 2D. My careers tend to last 30-50 years but due to time commitments I’d be surprised if I manage a 20 year career.

I like a larger and clear screen and when at home I’ll connect the laptop to my monitor. I’d like the laptop to be able to play future versions comfortably, too. It will only be used for FM and maybe rollercoaster tycoon.

Budget - £800

Many thanks.

Hi guys.

Not played FM since 2020 and that was on my current laptop which is about 7/8 years old. It is an HP Pavilion with an i5-6200U with 8gb of RAM. It didn't perform too great with FM20 and is just generally bloated and very slow for everything so I think it is time for an upgrade so I can get back involved with the game I have loved for well over 20 years.

My main saves tend to be long-term either starting in the bottom leagues of England or Scotland or full on journeyman style. I like to load a good number of leagues from around the world (most are view only), play with a large database with graphics packs and the 3d engine (happy to sacrifice graphics settings for performance).

Given this is pretty much only for football manager I want to limit the spend so I am considering building a desktop to get more performance for my money but the portability of a laptop will give me much more time and flexibility to play.

How well would this build deliver on what I would like:

  • Ryzen 5 5600g
  • MSI B550M Pro-VDH Wifi
  • Corsair Vengeance 16gb DDR4-3600
  • Kingston NV2 1TB NVME SSD

Total cost is showing as £418 including case and power supply.

In the £400-500 range, how close to that performance could I get on a laptop and what do you think would be the best option?

How much extra would I need to spend to get a significant performance improvement?

Thanks a lot.

In terms of a comparison, the closest you'll get in a laptop within that price range is this:

https://www.currys.co.uk/products/lenovo-ideapad-3-15.6-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-256-gb-ssd-blue-10240220.html

As you'll see from the below, the CPU in this desktop is still offering considerably better performance in benchmarks:

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/4325vs4760/AMD-Ryzen-5-5600G-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-5625U

To get something which is noticable for a performance upgrade, you'll honestly need to spend double the price of that for a desktop:

https://www.currys.co.uk/products/msi-mag-meta-s-gaming-pc-amd-ryzen-5-gtx-1660-super-512-gb-ssd-10240073.html

And even that, the biggest difference maker is the fact it has a dedicated graphics card, so will offer better graphical capability and a slight uplift in processing speed with the CPU.

In terms of performance for money, I think it's hard to beat that Ryzen 5 5600G CPU.

Appreciate the reply Kev thanks. I thought that would be the case with the desktop.

What are your thoughts on these? Using cashback, nectar points and some clever man maths I could justify stretching the budget to these if they are a big upgrade on the laptop you suggested. Looking at the benchmarks the 5600h looks like a better option but dont know if they extra cores in the 5700U make any difference

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1974441

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9580198

As much as I can see the benefits of building a desktop I think a laptop makes more sense for a number of reasons. Easier to take a laptop to bed as well when I am on a good run and dont want to switch the game off and give the FM gods a chance to ruin my season.

Cheers

Hey all,

I need your opinion I just ordered a new PC for better experience on fm23:

Motherboard: Asrock B550 Pro4 Motherboard ATX, AMD AM4 Socket

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5GHz,6 cores Socket AM4

Ram: KINGSTON KF432C16BB/32 FURY BEAST 32GB DDR4 3200MHZ

Hard drive: Western Digital Black SN850 SSD 500GB M.2 NVMe PCI Express 4.0

Will these be good enough to load many championships and players?

Opinions?

notebookcheck suggests the 5600H based model would be the one to go for of the two.

As per the OP, we don't comment on how many leagues to expect to run given the very subjective nature of this, but the CPU mentioned here is very capable.

Hi guys, do you think a M2 Macbook Air or an M1 Macbook Pro would be a better machine for playing FM?

Posting as they now cost about the same following the M2 Pro/Max Macbook Pros being released...and the benchmarks indicate both would be very good FM machines.

For those interested I dug out the detail on the benchmarks etc and posted it to the benchmarks thread here:

Do you think the 5600H machine is worth the extra £100 over the one you suggested at Currys? Thanks

It seems to be quite close on most benchmarks, so if you're preferring to be more budget conscious the one at Currys probably is the one to go for.

If the CPU is the M1 Pro or Max, those seem to outperform the base M2 on the benchmarks so that would seem to be the one to go for if you're looking to go for a MacBook.

Hi, looking at getting a new laptop for FM. I use 2d and with my current laptop run around 20 leagues but would like to run more and/or process quicker.

This is the one I'm looking at, any advice? Thanks!

Good deal for the money.

Will they run football manager at the same speed as they are the same specs? How many leagues do you reckon I could comfortably load as I want a rough idea (if u r not sure I understand) as my current laptop struggles quite badly

They should do, as the specs are identical aside from the screen size and they're even from the same manufacturer.

As per the OP, we don't comment on how many leagues to expect them to run.  It is a decent laptop CPU though.

Have they got the same quality of cpu?

Yes - as I've stated before the internal specs are identical, ie, everything is the same, including the CPU.  The only difference is the screen size, and that the larger one also has the number pad on the keyboard.

This seems like an excellent deal!

Yep, it certainly is a good deal for anyone who wants to play FM and not too worried about playing at max graphics settings.  Excellent CPU and you don't get many 16GB RAM models at that price.

So my laptop has died and need to replace it. I usually load around 210k players and virtually every league. My old laptop handled it fine, it was an HP Pavilion 15 gaming laptop, 8GB I7 processor AMD Ryzen 5 4600H with Radeon graphics if that is helpful

Looking at what I can get for around £6-700 that is as at least as good as those specs, but preferably better

Thanks in advance

My only question mark here is you've put both i7 and Ryzen 5, but given you've also given the model of 4600H I'm assuming Ryzen 5 is correct.

So, based on what you've stated: https://www.currys.co.uk/products/lenovo-ideapad-gaming-3-15.6-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-5-gtx-1650-512-gb-ssd-10237823.html

This was my old laptop, sorry don’t know much about laptops in general. I got it for £530 a couple of years ago rather than the £785 on this link

That says another processor still (Ryzen 7 4800H) - go to your system information screen and take a look at what CPU it shows on there, or on Task Manager.

The one at Argos has a better graphics card than the one at Currys, although the one at Currys is still fine for max graphics settings on FM.  The downside is the smaller SSD.

In terms of processing speed, they should be more or less the same as they have the same CPU.

Hey, guys. I am looking to upgrade my cpu. Mostly in order to load more leagues in fm (I usually load 10 countries and around 20-30 leagues and I am satisfied with the processing times). I currently own a ryzen 5 1600af and I am debating myself into the following options: ryzen 5 7600 / ryzen 7 5600x / ryzen 7 5700x. Which do you think would handle fm better? Thanks in advance

Out of those the Ryzen 5 7600 would be best - but make sure the CPU's are compatible with your Motherboard, as if it's not you'll need to upgrade that as well.

If you're happy to pay the extra £50, then yes.  The CPU is quite a bit better according to the benchmarks.

If I use it only for fm and homework is it really necessary to pay the extra 50 pound or shall I just get the 500 pound one? Which one would u actually get?

Will you have a better experience?  Yes.

It's up to you - the £500 one is fine.  The £550 is better.

Hello everyone !

I'm looking for a new computer to play FM on, and after years of playing on a laptop, I wanted to switch to a desktop computer.
While searching a bit, I found some "mini computers" with interesting performances. I wanted to know if you had any opinion on these mini computers ? And if you had some to advise ?
I found these 2 models that seem interesting:

https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B09TQMPRR4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3SQ6G7FNR161D&psc=1

Otherwise, do you have any ideas for a "classic" computer for a 500€ budget?

Thanks in advance !

These are basically laptops without the attached screen and keyboard based on the internal specs.  Both are decent though, and the second one of the two is slightly stronger in terms of CPU.

Looking on Amazon, I can't see anything to beat them at the price.  I'm not aware of other websites you'd use in France to buy computers though so I've not looked around outside of Amazon.

Thanks for your opinion :) I have the impression that not many people know about these mini computers even though they have very good properties for the price offered. Indeed, you have to add the screen + the keyboard + the mouse but you get, I think, 600€ all included with descent material to play FM.

One last question : looking at the 2nd model you recommend, I see that there is a version with 32GB RAM instead of 16GB for 515€ (it's 565€ but there is a 50€ coupon). Would you advise me to spend 70€ more for this model or the difference of 16GB RAM will hardly be noticeable when playing FM ?
