Hi all, massive fan of this thread and all the great work you guys do.

 

Been muddling on forever with an old MacBook until it finally packed up for good last month, and unfortunately my work have now put a block on new installs on our systems so I find myself needing a new FM device!

 

Budget: £300-£450

 

Needs: pretty much exclusively FM or Netflix etc - and only one of these running at once (i don’t have lots of stuff running). Anything heavier duty will be done on my work laptop (editing etc)

 

I tend to be a 4/5 leagues-max, medium/large database, low 3D highlight viewer - and as mentioned was previously on an old MacBook (2014) so starting from a low performance bar.

 

As it’ll mainly be used on trains, hotels etc portability is my other main consideration - so ideally something light and 14” screen.

 

Have been scouting the recent posts and reccs in here and seems like these options may be among the better ones within my price range.

As per the OP, we can't suggest how many leagues will run to your liking as that kind of thing is entirely subjective.

It is a good spec, however you would likely get something equal or maybe better for less money if you go for a pure laptop as opposed to a 2-in-1.  But if you need the functionality of the 2-in-1, then that looks a good deal for one of those.

It'd be OK, and is certainly a good price for a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.

It has the following specs:

Ryzen 7 5800H

16 GB RAM

RTX 3050

So i assume it would be able to run FM22 without any problems.

It has a 19:10 ratio, 2560 x 1600 display, so i'm wondering will the GUI of FM work with this alternative screen ratio?

Ah yes I meant more like running more than three or four leagues wouldn’t have the laptop melting!

I’m stuck to Curry’s (per the companies business account) for the laptop and as far as I could see they didn’t have anything around the same budget that was purely a laptop. I doubt I’d use the 2 in 1 function to be honest!

I do like the look of that Dell. To be honest I thought they’d stopped producing anything decent ages ago!

Specs look identical to me (😂), although I’m sure you are correct. Really not my forte this. Which part am I looking at to see which CPU is best out of interest? Is it the GHz part?

The clock speed (GHz) by itself means very little.  I look at benchmarking sites - these give performance scores based on how the CPUs perform in certain tests.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html? is the main one we use, as every CPU is ranked based on performance scores so if it appears higher up the list it means it's performed more strongly in the tests than the ones below it.

I should add to this, although GHz is less important than it once was, I still won't recommend anything where the base clock speed falls below what SI recommend (which is 1.8GHz for FM21 and FM22, and 2.1GHz for FM20 and before).

Hi guys,

I'm going to get a new laptop and have decided I want to get either a Razer Book 13 or a Razer Blade Stealth 13 - I've found a shop in Singapore where I live with 2020 models (but still new in box) of both available at a big discount.

Both have:

- Intel Core i7-1165G7 Quad core CPU

- 16 MB RAM

- 512 GB SSD

The main differences (apart from colour of the unit) is in the graphics:

- the Book 13 has UHD display with an integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics processor

vs

- Stealth 13 has HD display with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti Max Q graphics card.

 

FM is the only game I play (and I play extended highlights matches in 3D as I'm a details person).  Otherwise its just working in google suite and watching netflix (which is much nicer in UHD).

I currently have a Dell XPS 13 with UHD, so have become very accustomed to the high quality image and not too keen to give that up.

But, I've never actually played the game on a computer with a dedicated graphics card, so have nothing to compare to.  Always played with graphics at "Low".  It doesn't lag too often and seems ok.

So, my question is, will the 3D match experience with a dedicated graphics card in the Stealth be that much better than with just integrated graphics in the Book to justify giving up the UHD display? Obviously subjective, but asking for opinions nonetheless ...

Ok, subsequent to above I just played a match in FM22 and realised that the game play is a lot jerkier than I had really realised ... (funny how its not a problem until you think about it)

The Dell XPS I have now runs hot all the time and I'm guessing thats part of the problem.  The Razers seem to have better reviews for cooling (within the limits of a small unit).

Will the improved CPU 2.8ghz compared to what I have now 1.5ghz help?

Or do I really need the graphics card?  How does a graphics card help?  Does it smooth out the experience?  Is the rendering of the action more detailed?  (as noted have nothing to compare to!)

The integrated Iris XS graphics is strong, so yeah should be fine for medium to high settings, but at 1080p which is the resolution most of the displays are set to for this CPU - I imagine it'll probably be a little bit jerkier at UHD (not sure if you're referring to 1440p or 4K there - if it's 4K the integrated graphics will probably find it a bit harder to cope).  However, given I don't have specific experience of how these chips cope at 1440p and 4K I'm not 100% sure how big of an effect it'll be.   

But, the Iris XE is considerably stronger than the old Intel UHD integrated graphics options, so if you consider the existing experience to be acceptable at UHD resolutions, then I'd say you'll find it a lot smoother with the Iris XE integrated graphics.

A graphics card is effectively a separate processor purely for the graphics, so will enable better graphics rendering and at higher resolutions than integrated graphics - there are some games where a dedicated graphics card is effectively mandatory as most integrated GPU's won't be strong enough to run them (FM is not one of these games).

After my Lenovo laptop has seemed to pack in after 3 years I'm looking for a new laptop.

Ideally from Argos, as I get extra discount (especially this weekend 15% ygm). But looking for something around £500-£800. Ideally with a 15 inch screen 1080p, and not bulky/huge like your typical giant alienware laptop.

It'll mostly be used for FM, possibly something like Anno 1800 and some smaller indie style games from Gamepass.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post.

I have had a new gaming laptop for 4 months now, FM was running great until recently when I updated to the latest nvidia graphics driver. Now every time I enter a match on FM the GPU overheats and the fans are at 100%, as soon as the match is finished it is okay again.

I have rolled back to the previous driver but the problem is still there.

This is the laptop I have, should be capable of running FM no problem.

As far as I can see the Samsung doesn't give the specific processor details, so I'd avoid that as I can't be sure exactly what you're getting.

Both of the ones at Argos are fantastic for the price.  Out of the two I'd go for the Lenovo as the CPU in that one scores higher in the benchmarks.

Weird - the RTX 3060 shouldn't even break a sweat with FM.

Have you tried any other games to see how the performance is?

Thanks mate, typically I have missed out on the deal and feel £700 is a bit of a stretch for me just to buy a laptop for FM etc.....

Not at all mate, that was on me dithering about, I thought the promo might have lasted longer than one day so thought it was safe!!

I'm really just toying with the idea to be honest, I haven't played FM properly since FM08 barring one game of FM18 Touch when I went on holiday a few years ago and needed something to do on the long plane journey. 

I'm not planning on getting a new-gen console, there is a lack of stock anyway but I am interested in maybe switching over to PC gaming, I do like FIFA and CoD from time to time but I would need decent specs to make that work, FM is obviously not as demanding, and I'm just trying to find something that sort of meets in the middle in terms of requirements and price.

The base clock speed is lower than SI suggest.

Will FM run?  Almost definitely.  However, with such a low base clock speed and a TDP of 12w to 25w, that CPU is going to be prone to thermal throttling under load, so I'd be inclined to give it a miss.

Unless of course you already actually own a laptop with that spec, in which case I'd suggest downloading the demo and seeing how you find it.

Thanks for the feedback dude. Should have said that i7 does 3.9GHz max turbo, so I tried running 18 leagues from 15 nations with a large DB (70 odd thousand players). Runs really well and graphics on that GPU are butter smooth on high settings. Obvious fan noise with the CPU boosting and a bit toasty underneath but surprisingly great performance for a small non-gaming laptop.  Would even say not a discernible difference from my 16" MacBook Pro (non M1, the 2019 model with the Intel) which cost about 3 times as much and also has fans spinning with similar 18 leagues set up. Quite impressed.

Yeah, it will have a turbo speed, but with the low base clock speed and low TDP there's always the chance it'll throttle severely under heavy load, hence why I steer clear of recommending them when the base clock speed is lower than SI recommend to run the game just to be on the safe side.

As @fc.cadonihas stated, the first two should definitely be avoided. 

The HP with the Ryzen 5 5600U however is very decent and should handle FM nicely.

I'm starting to look for a new laptop, primarily for the purpose of playing FM. I'll need to do a bit of saving first, but I think my budget will be around £600, although I might be able to go a little higher for the right laptop. I'm hoping to get something that will last a few years and also handle FM comfortably.

Other than playing FM, I'll use it for work (just using Microsoft Office and general internet use), and possibly to stream football matches occasionally. 

I've read through some of the posts in this thread which have been really helpful. I'm a complete novice in terms of laptop specs, but I think this is the best one I've seen so far within my budget:

Been looking for a new laptop for a while for FM. i was using my work laptop but due to javalog 4J they have told me to uninstall any non work related stuff. I have an old Acer i5 3rd gen that can play the game but very slowly and is well past it's best

I generally run a large databse with the top 5 european leagues and  with players who have continental rep in other continents. Happy enough to play with only commentary aswell so this should do what i need or is there better value

Yep, I'd agree.  That's probably the best you'll get at that price.

Honor are a Chinese brand.  Their stuff seems to review quite well.
