Jewish organisations have claimed Qatar has banned the sale of cooked kosher food at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and will not allow the faithful to worship in public during the tournament.

It's estimated more than 10,000 Jewish people from Israel and thousands more from the US will attend this year's FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Some Jewish groups claimed the Gulf state has prohibited public places of worship for followers of Judaism.

'We were recently told that they banned places of worship for Jews because they cannot secure them,' a representative of a Jewish organisation told The Jerusalem Post.

The same source said Jewish people 'were promised to be allowed to create prayer spaces' by Qatari authorities so they could 'have a place of worship' while attending the World Cup.

It's also alleged authorities have prohibited visitors being sold or offered cooked kosher food at venues, despite previously saying it would be allowed.

Kosher refers to food that is prepared and considered fit for purpose according to Jewish law.

Judaism has rules governing its followers can consume, with one restriction being the way in which meat is slaughtered.

For meat to be kosher, a specially trained person known as a Schochet must perform the procedure, which sees the animal killed with a knife in a single unbroken cut across the throat.

Only the meat of animals that have split hooves and chew their own cud - with the exception of specific fowl such as chicken - is considered kosher.

A source explained religious Jews at the World Cup 'were promised to be able to cook kosher food including kosher meat, but at the moment have only been allowed to sell cold bagel sandwiches'.

'There is no kosher food, there are no Shabbat meals and no public prayer services,' another source said.

Despite this, US Rabbi Marc Schneier has opened a kosher kitchen in Qatar that's selling baked goods such as bagels and other delicacies.

Mr Schneier said it's the first kosher kitchen to open in the Gulf state that accommodates Jewish people.

It's unknown if cooked kosher food is being sold at the kitchen.

The claimed ban on prayer spaces and cooked kosher food is the latest in a string of controversies to hit this year's FIFA World Cup.

The claims come after data revealed 6500 migrant workers from countries including India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka had died on construction sites in Qatar since it was announced the country won the right to host the event in 2010.

FIFA has also been lambasted for giving Qatar hosting rights due to the nation's questionable human rights record, including its persecution of gay people and women.

An unsurprising if bad development.
