Hmm, I'll try to put it this way, let's ignore this specific situation.

Defender: stands still, doesn't move.

Attacker: smashes the ball past him, isn't in direct control of it anymore and then smashes into the defender not moving.

Is that a foul? Like what's the defender supposed to do.

Alvarez also impedes the goalkeeper who could've turned around because he didn't fall to the ground and maybe caught up with the ball.

Alvarez didn't dribble the ball past him, he wasn't in control of it anymore, he just took a shot. He's not entitled to the ball anymore and he is the one initiation the contact.

Alvarez moved towards the keeper, not the other way around.

That's the best I can come up with for the explanation, it's about who initiated the contact.

Because like this, if we go with your logic, any forward can just try to chip the ball past the keeper and smash into him, to get a penalty if he doesn't score. Doesn't make sense to me at all.

The keeper isn't standing still though! He's flying out to the ball. He only stops when he realises he hasn't got there. Alvarez has nowhere near enough time to adjust his run at all, so that's why it's not just a case of Alvarez running into him willy nilly.

What about some of the antics from the Dutch during the penalty shootout?

During the match, anything goes. As said: also the Argentinians will agree with that. But after the match is over, you don't taunt the opponent, you don't refuse to shake their hand, you don't talk smack. Basic sportsmanship.

Alvarez did make sure he ran into the leg tbf, he could have easily avoided it. Still a penalty.

"let's ignore this specific situation" and then invent a completely different situation to the one that happened  :D

Different? Facts:

1. Keeper has established position and doesn't dive, is still on his feet.

2. Striker smashes into him, takes them both out.

3. Striker didn't dribble past him, but made a shot, wasn't in control of the ball anymore.

4. You can say striker's progress was stopped, but so was keeper's because he was on his feet and had as much chance for the ball if he wasn't taken out.

5. Striker initiated the contact and took the keeper out, not the other way around.

This is like smashing your car into the wall and then saying the wall is to blame.

No clue what they're doing at the back, but Kramaric no longer playing an invisible 9 should improve Croatia's chances of scoring.

The entire setup makes absolutely no sense when you're the team with the ball, like Croatia was in the first half.

Kramarić can't hold up the ball, Pašalić is a midfielder on the wing and Perišić is having a bad game.

Dalić just struck lucky against a team with completely different playstyle and decided to keep it for this match.

Gunman very defensive for a guy who hates the Croatian NT ;)

Some people ended up in prison and fled the country since the last World Cup. :D

Anyhow, I hate Orsato more. And that every 50-50 call ever since Lautaro's offside against Saudis went Argentina's way.

Card immunity being way more annoying than penalty, tbh.

Talking about some Dutch players trying to put off the Argies on the walk to take the penalties. Talking 20-30 yards, 1-3 of them. Unsportsmanlike.

The German commentators are cumming every time Messi looks at the ball, it's really getting too much. 'Look how he was pushed around and still gets the pass away!'. Er, no. Defender didn't even touch him :D

Messi is having a great game, sure, but why act like fanbois?

Haha, what nonsense

Just like in gaming, you want to BM the opponent, you better make sure you win, otherwise prepare for karma once you lose

That entire incident started with nice guy Messi making gestures towards Van Gaal after he scored the penalty for 1-0.

yeah, those best centre back in the world claims about Gvardiol are being ripped up in front of our eyes here. He’s all over the place.

Think of VvD playing with Milner and Joe Gomez alongside him. :D

And the tactical mastermind also took out Brozović, only midfielder decent for protecting the defense.

Thought that was a mistake when I saw the team sheet. Then subs him at halftime when chasing. Does he even know the player(s) at his disposal?

Absolutely. But during the match. Moan at the ref, start a match of handbags, push players over, mention their dubious heritage, whatever. But after the match, it's over and done.

This is Matterface's second tournament and I'm convinced he still doesn't understand drop balls.

He doesn't understand football in general. He was screaming about Croatia wanting a penalty when all Perisic was claiming for was a deflection and a corner :D

We talked about how Southgate wouldn't be good enough to be an EPL manager in club football.

Dalić wouldn't be good enough for Croatian league. His biggest strength was exactly the same, making friends with best players and uniting the team.

I wrote about it the other day, we were extremely unlucky in almost every single tournament since '96 up until he took over, whether it be injuries, refereeing or just ridiculous match scenarios.

Then he joined and you witnessed what happened over the past 4 years, despite our level of playing not being close to 2016 where we legit looked like a top3 team in the tournament and actually attacked everyone.

Now he'll leave, Modrić will retire, we will go back to group eliminations or Ro16 and casual part of the nation will remember him as a mastermind. :D

Life is so unfair.
