Finally trying FM23

Recommended Posts

I am a long time player, been around since FM08. I have finally found the time to sit down with FM23. There are some things that are solid, the agent interactions are cool, and the new data has made for some awesome skinning work for attributeless play.

Other than that...oof. It is just...awful. More than that, it is arbitrary. Other than having good dynamics, very little of what you do matters. I know the game is not scripted, but this is the first version that has felt like it is, and that is a problem. It's almost like the ME was upgraded, but the tools we have to play were not. Football is a game of space and you simply don't have the tools to accurately exploit and protect it. Instructions are counterintuitive, usually doing the opposite of what they say they do. Instructions also have little bearing on what the players do, so eventually I just kind of stopped doing them. Click gegenpress and then click continue. You know the matches you will lose a few weeks before they happen, you know you will be awful in January, you know which highlight is a goal 2 seconds in, it is just kind of bad.

Any who, apologies for the rant, super excited for 25 and who am I kidding, I'll buy and play the heck out of 24 too.

I have only started playing the game this year as I am fairly recently retired. I wouldn't say that it is "bad" overall, but there are loads of things in the game that are done badly. From tortuous press conferences and interactions with players (e.g. ending up having a row with a player after you have congratulated him on his performance, excruciating club meetings etc) to ridiculous stamina drops and the absence of a clearly designed close season (club meetings continue with training advice as if the players are still at the club). It means that sometimes I cannot be bothered to play the game even though I want to continue with my club. At times the immersion is great - at other times it is just laughable. The overall effect is to make the game "scruffy", which is a great shame as it could be much, much better with a bit more attention to detail. Even the non-league clubs don't have their full names spelled out properly on some of the screens (e.g. cup draws, transfers). 6 out of 10 for me.

If you read the future of FM blog, Miles is quite honest that FM23 fell short of their own expectations.  I'm hoping FM24 addresses the major issues that many have pointed out, and then onto FM25 which will be, no pun intended, a whole new ball game.

Yeah, I have read the blogs, but this is so bad I have zero faith they can execute a new version of the game.

It strikes me that 24 is a bit of a sacrificial lamb. They're going with a few headline fixes that are easy to do, that the fans have been shouting about for a while. Things that probably should have been in 23, but didn't make it due to time constraints.

A lot of the development effort will be going into 25 though, rather than 24. It has to, or there is the distinct possibility that game would be a disaster given the scope of the changes they're making. It's a huge undertaking and a significant risk.

We need to give SI the credit for making the decisions they have. It would have been all too easy for them to just churn out the same iterative releases and take the cash, like EA have done with FIFA. But they've spotted the stagnation in the game and taken the criticisms on board. The complete revamp is a huge moment for the game, it's arguably only happened a couple of times in the whole history of the franchise, even back to the Championship Manager days. Fans of the series need to support 24 and see it as an end of an era, no matter how little changes in the game. Then we need to be stay positive about 25, even if there's a bumpy start.

Rough with the smooth for me with FM23. I’ve had my teams playing the sexiest pretend football I’ve ever seen, but equally it frustrates the life out of me at certain points.

Having now played a ridiculous amount of hours (cheers to covid and working from home 😆👍🏼) the patterns are obvious, it’s massively predictable, and the same things happen over and over no matter what your tactic is or which level you start at. Still, I’ve enjoyed the ride.
