Stuniverse
Episode 100 - Waiting for UEFA Champions League | 2nd August 2030 "Transfer Window Opens" -- -- To be honest with you, we've had bids already for some of our better players and this window might be more a case of can I keep this Viking squad together? We have until the end of this month to find out. -- Bids For Viking Players We've accepted two bids for Tobias Børkeeiet. Spoiler We've knocked back quite a few bids for Oscar Bobb Oscar hasn't asked to discuss the situation (yet) but, with bids now reaching an initial £8M (potentially rising to £9.75M) I'm not sure how long before that may change and Oscar is knocking on my door. Spoiler We've also rejected a lot of bids for Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson. We've agreed with Patrik that we'll let him go if we receive a bid of £8M for him. So far, the bids received haven't been close to the agreed value. Spoiler We've also had one bid for Gaetano Oristanio which we rejected. Stuniverse
Episode 100 - Waiting for UEFA Champions League | 2nd August 2030 "Board Expectations - Opportunity to Adjust" -- The Board's expectations at the start of the 2030 Eliteserien season was for us to finish in the top four. Now, presumably because we are doing so well, the Viking Board have given me the opportunity to adjust those expectations upwards if I want, on the understanding that if the Expectations are adjusted I'll be judged against the new expectations. But, after discussing it with the Board, I don't think the slight increase in transfer and wage budgets I'd get justifies the increased pressure of a higher expectation. Stuniverse
Sunday 4th August 2030 Viking (1st) v Tromsø (15th) Eliteserien -- -- -- -- You've got to give a lot of credit to Timmy Simons and his Tromsø team today. They were very solid, very well organised, worked incredibly hard and we found them very difficult to break down. In the first half we controlled the game, were the only team looking to get forward, created lots of chances but struggled to get any shots on target. Our first shot on target was the penalty. It was a clear tackle from behind, with no attempt to play the ball without going through the legs of our player, so a definite penalty for me. I was delighted Jakob Napoleon Romsaas scored the penalty. What he does after that is down to him. Jakob may not have celebrated out of respect but I celebrated, my staff celebrated, the rest of the team did and the noise levels inside our SR-Bank Arena sky rocketed. We changed our style a bit in the second half, looking to Work The Ball Into The Box, and were able to add two more goals through Gaetano Oristanio. --

Stuniverse
Sunday 11th August 2030 Sogndal (8th) v Viking (1st) Eliteserien -- Now is not the time nor the place to discuss Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson right before this match against Sogndal. Patrik isn't in the matchday squad and I've no more to say right now as we're focussed on getting another three valuable Eliteserien points if we can. -- -- We've received no bids for Oscar Bobb so far since the transfer window opened. The bids we had, which we rejected, were when our transfer window was still closed. As far as I know, Oscar is happy here at Viking; he's certainly playing like he's happy. When there's something to say I'll tell you. Right now, there's nothing happening other than Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson wasn't selected today. The reasons will stay private for now. I thought we played very well today and thoroughly deserved our victory. Stuniverse
Preview -- I have no further news on Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson or Oscar Bobb other than to say that Oscar will be in the matchday squad for the Kristiansund but Patrik won't be. We still have some injuries and match fitness issues we're dealing with and it's likely Oscar Aga and Edvin Austbø will get 45 minutes each. Stuniverse
Sunday 18th August 2030 Kristiansund (14th) v Viking (1st) Eliteserien -- -- -- -- It's disappointing to lose this one but you have to give Eirik Mæland and Kristiansund a lot of credit for how hard they worked. We had more possession than Kristiansund, we created more chances, but it wasn't to be. I think Kristiansund were physically stronger than us. I wouldn't go so far as to say they bullied us but Eivind Helland goes off injured and two minutes later they grab the lead against the run of play. On the stroke of half-time, we concede a soft penalty and we're two down. We're a bit down to bare bones at the moment. After selling Yorbe Vertessen and Tobias Borkeeiet we haven't got a full squad registered as we're hoping to bring a player or two in this window. We're short of centre-backs so losing Eivind was a blow. And having to job-share two strikers with a half each because neither of them are match fit is far from ideal. That said, the players should've been good enough to get something out of this match and conceding three to the team who'd scored the fewest goals in Eliteserien this season is very disappointing. We did change to a more Attacking mentality and shape in the closing 20 minutes or so but at 1-3 down the damage was already done. --

Stuniverse
Saturday 24th August 2030 Two Out, One In -- Why hasn't Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson been playing? We were looking to move him on so that we could sign a Norwegian International goalkeeper who was in the Norwegian 2030 World Cup Squad as back-up to Kim Christian Høyenhall. We agreed a fee with Bodø/Glimt, and personal terms with the goalkeeper and his agent, but we didn't have enough funds to complete the deal. We agreed a transfer to FC Utrecht to generate enough funds but Patrik rejected their contract. So we had to delay our new goalkeeper signing and our Director of Football, Erik Nevland, had to roll his sleeves up and work hard to try and get offers in for Patrik. It wasn't looking good, and then... Spoiler We weren't sure that we'd get a buyer for Patrik so Erik Nevland put other feelers out. Nobody was interested in paying £10M for Oscar Bobb which, actually, was a relief because I don't want to lose Oscar and, it turns out, the player is very happy at Viking. But Erik Nevland was able to generate interest in Gaetano Oristanio. Spoiler -- Viking sign Jasper Torkildsen from Bodø/Glimt. Stuniverse
Sunday 25th August 2030 Viking (1st) v Strømsgodset (9th) Eliteserien -- -- -- We knew Strømsgodset are a very good team, they beat Bodø/Glimt comfortably 2-0 recently, and they showed why today. I thought we had the better of the game but Strømsgodset took the lead, against the run of play - something that seems to be happening to us quite a bit just lately - and then they had something to hang onto and they hung onto it very well. Fortunately we were able to get an equaliser, but we couldn't score a second to win it. Yes, Jasper Torkildsen showed glimpses today of what he's capable of and why we wanted to sign him. Everything we do is about winning but we're going through a transitional phase at the moment as we're transitioning the squad through this transfer window, or at least trying to, and we're also transitioning the tactics. Squad wise, we're a bit threadbare and disjointed at the moment, not helped by injuries, but I'm confident the squad will be in good shape when the transfer window closes at the end of this month. Tactics wise, we've had some success with the 3-4-1-2 but it does leave us a bit vulnerable in and behind the wing-backs so I asked the wing-backs to support rather than attack today. I like this system because we make better use of the wide areas and can get the ball into the box more often. With the wing-backs attacking we create lots of chances but today, with them on support, we didn't create quite as many chances. But the real problem we're finding, apart from the vulnerability at the back, is that we don't seem to be getting as many shots on target and that was evident today. We tried to Work The Ball Into The Box between the 25th and 40th minute but we didn't create a single chance so we went back to not trying to do that. I gave it 10 minutes after the restart and then went back to our tried and tested 4-4-2 diamond. It was better, and we did get an equaliser and hit the bar, but we weren't convincing enough going forward. To be fair though, I think a lot of that was down to Tor Thodesen and how he has this Strømsgodset team set-up. -- Edited April 8 by Stuniverse

Stuniverse
Preview -- Yesterday's Result -- -- I'm very pleased with the business we were able to do in the August transfer window but I'm also very relieved that the window has now closed. We now know the squad we have to work with for the rest of the Eliteserien season and I'm very happy with the group. We now have to find a consistency of performance and results over the remaining nine Eliteserien fixtures as we attempt to retain our Eliteserien title. New signing Brage Kvithyld is recovering from a calf injury so we won't be rushing him or Eivind Helland (ankle). Runar Norheim (calf) is still out but otherwise we have a clean bill of health. -- Expected Line-up I'm thinking of returning to the 4-4-2 diamond for the Aalesund match.
Stuniverse
Sunday 1st September 2030 Aalesund (15th) v Viking (1st) Eliteserien -- -- -- We had to be patient today, very patient, but in the end we found a way to get the win our performance deserved. Defensively we were outstanding. Aalesund only managed two shots all game, neither of them on target, and they were the home team. Going forward we created more than enough chances but we had to wait until the 73rd minute to find a way past Hugo Araya in Aalesund's goal. It's not often that a player comes on as a 61st minute substitute and goes on to hit the post, then score two goals, and be named Player of the Match but that's exactly what our new signing Lasse Nordås did today. Lasse is six foot four inches tall and he causes problems for the opposition both inside and outside the penalty area. We'd seen first hand the problems Lasse causes the opposition and we wanted him playing for us, not against us. We had to do quite a bit of wheeling and dealing last month to raise the funds to get the transfer done and Lasse showed on his debut why we wanted to sign him. Oscar Bobb wasn't at his best today but he's been brilliant for us since signing from Molde. Brice Wembangomo was superb today as he has been for most of the season. -- Edited April 8 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Preview -- -- That's very kind of you to say, Tobias. I appreciate that. Åsane may be 11th but they are unbeaten in their last four with wins against Odd and Tromsø as well as draws with Sandnes Ulf and Sogndal. We're expecting a difficult match. I think we'll go strong for this one even though we play AS PAOK Salonika in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. We're into that fixture congestion period of the season where we alternate Eliteserien matches with mid-week games in Europe. Rightly or wrongly, given the £12.69M we received for winning Eliteserien last season and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League this season, we're going to prioritise our Eliteserien fixtures over the Champions League ones. Eivind Helland and Runar Norheim aren't fully fit, otherwise we have a clean bill of health. -- Expected Line-up Edited April 9 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Saturday 7th September 2030 Viking (1st) v Åsane (11th) Eliteserien -- -- -- Nobody is stringing consecutive wins together at the top of Eliteserien, including us, so this match today won't define our season. There's still a lot of football left to be played but it was very disappointing to lose this match. Sometimes it just isn't your day and, unfortunately, it felt like that today. We dominated the game. We had 72% of possession, we had 18 chances to their five, we got nine on target to their three, plus we hit the intersection of bar and post twice, Lasse Nordås at 0-0 and Oscar Aga at 0-1 down. Louis Fortin was inspired in their goal and Åsane were just ruthless, three attempts on target, three goals. They took the lead with their first attempt on goal, totally against the run of play, with a 25-yard wonder strike from Jason Knight. Åsane were happy to sit back, we had plenty of chances but couldn't beat Fortin in their goal. After 65 minutes we changed our shape to a more Attacking one and we got back into the game through a penalty, coolly converted by Martin Palumbo. At that point I possibly should have gone back to our normal 4-4-2 diamond with Positive mentality but we were on top, putting Åsane on the back foot, and I could only see us going on to win. But Åsane hit us on the counter attack for 1-2 and then they did it again for 1-3. We played well and I can't fault the players for effort but we didn't make the most of our chances. We will play worse than this and win. It was just one of those days. It was a superb goal and, coming after just 10 minutes, it really gave Åsane and their travelling supporters a lift. We've been very impressive at home in our SR-Bank Arena this season and we played well today, we just didn't get the breaks in front of goal. If Lasse Nordås and Oscar Aga score, instead of hitting the intersection of post and bar, then it's a completely different game. It's up to the players to make the SR-Bank Arena a fortress again and my staff and I will be doing everything we can to help them do just that. I think we were unlucky today, more than we played badly, but I let my assistant manager Egil Ulfstein do his bad-cop thing because we should have won that match really. -- Edited April 9 by Stuniverse

Stuniverse
Preview -- -- We travel to Greece to play PAOK Salonika on Tuesday night in our opening UEFA Champions League match and then on Saturday we're away to Vålerenga (6th) in our next Eliteserien match. I think Tuesday to Saturday gives us enough recovery time so we'll go strong again for this European club match. It's up to the players who played pretty well against Åsane, but didn't get the desired result, to prove they deserve to go again in Eliteserien against Vålerenga. We have no new injuries and the walking wounded are getting closer to full fitness. -- Expected Line-up No real changes but, with Lasse Nordås playing TF-At I'm asking Oscar Aga to drop back a bit as DLF-At. Stuniverse
Tuesday 10th September 2030 PAOK Salonika (Greece) v Viking (Norway) UEFA Champions League -- -- -- For saying we were the away side we had a lot of good possession and we created the better chances. Jakob Napoleon Romsaas hit the bar in the first half and David Breckalo hit the bar in the second. We had to take Brice Wembangomo off early after a knock to his knee and we were never comfortable or confident though because PAOK Salonika are a very good team who caused us problems but a combination of good defending by us, wayward finishing by them, and a couple of good saves by Jasper Torkildsen preserved our clean sheet. Going into the final 10 minutes we started to think that an away draw would be a good result for us and then up stepped Martin Palumbo to score direct from a free-kick and we suddenly had three points to hang onto. There were a couple of hairy moments for us but we held on for a massive 1-0 away win. I was thrilled to be able to give Academy graduate Steinar Braathen a full 45 minutes in the second-half. The experience will do Steinar good and he didn't look out of place. Spoiler We'll give the players a couple of days rest before we go again in Eliteserien away at Vålerenga. -- Edited April 11 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Preview -- -- It's in our own hands... or feet, I guess... but only if we keep winning... and that's something we've had a bit of trouble with in Eliteserien recently. Stuniverse
Saturday 14th September 2030 Vålerenga (6th) v Viking (1st) Eliteserien -- -- -- We need to help Jakob Napoleon Romsaas find more consistency from game to game but when he's on-song like he was today, Jakob is almost unplayable. The Intility Arena is always a tough place to come and play but, whilst it wasn't easy and Vålerenga made things difficult for us, as they always do, I thought we were the better team and deserved the win. Lasse Nordås hit the post in the first half and also the second half. I feel a bit sorry for Lasse because he isn't having much luck in front of goal; he's scored twice for us since signing from Tromsø but he's also hit the woodwork four or five times. Once again we had to be patient but, just as we thought the game was heading for a goalless draw, Jakob Napoleon Romsaas scored the only goal of the game on 90+1 minutes. Jasper Torkildsen then saved us with a great save late on to preserve our one-goal lead to the final whistle. --

Stuniverse
Preview -- -- Back in January we beat Rennes 1-0 in last season's UEFA Europa League in our own SR-Bank Arena. We're expecting a much harder game in Rennais, France in the Roazhon Park tonight. It's Tuesday and our next Eliteserien game against Molde isn't until a week on Sunday so, I think, we can go strong tonight. We're also very close to a clean bill of health with only Runar Norheim not at full match fitness. -- Expected Line-up Edited April 11 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Tuesday 17th September 2030 Rennes (France) v Viking (Norway) UEFA Champions League -- -- -- I'm so proud of the players today, they worked their socks off, put in a tremendous shift, and almost snatched a win late on. Rennes put us under pressure from the very first whistle and took the lead after only eight minutes. We feared an onslaught, and were discussing changes in the dugout to make us harder to break down, when the players started to get a grip of midfield and take the game to Rennes. Lasse Nordås shaved the bar with an 18th minute header. We grew in confidence as the game progressed and Preslav Borukov equalised for us on 53 minutes, heading in a cross from El Hadji Malick Diouf at the far post. We thought we'd snatched a win late on when Edvin Austbø slotted the ball underneath their goalkeeper... only for VAR to rule out the goal for offside. --
