1 hour ago, I have nothing to say said:

Another thing to check then, have they spent 3 years at viking rather than 3 years at viking 2 and/or viking and viking 2? (If that makes sense?)

I think I get what you're asking.

HGC_first-club.png.9c63c1b01c0d39a74e5b747c9e11df1b.png

A) So here's the details for the two players who show HGC but can't be registered as HGC in Eliteserien.

--

First Kjetil Istre - so not sure as 2029 is both Viking and Viking 2 and 2031 is Lysekloster on loan.

Istre01.png.a951e71608af2a5fdd1ee1238e5e8015.png

Istre02.thumb.png.2d2dec3690514deda1a1ab70e1a30041.png

-

Next is Roger Vestgøte - who's had two seasons Viking and then 2032 split between Viking and Viking 2.

Vestgote02.thumb.png.457aff27f915859b465ccb6ea088d74e.png

--

B) So now the comparisons, three players younger than Kjetil Istre who do count as HGC in both Eliteserien and UEFA Champions League.

Starting with, Jan Erik Dang - 2029 split Viking and Viking 2, then three seasons with Viking 2.

Dang01.png.fcfbd223007159e98b4b3b836526893c.png

Dang02.thumb.png.f407c97eb708f0dec71ce0f37bb00abc.png

--

Then Sverre Olav Bø Pedersen - one season at Viking, two seasons out on loan at different clubs, then one season at Viking 2.

Pedersen01.png.ebe1d3229c8407359af63c010edbc7eb.png

Pedersen02.thumb.png.edebb64b27954373422cb500678aea2c.png

--

And finally, Brede Norbye -first season split between Viking and Viking 2, then one season at Viking 2 and one season at Viking.

 I'm no clearer at all I'm afraid, @I have nothing to say

"Four Players Leave Viking on Loan"

--

I'll be honest, this loan was more about getting Joakim Berg Nundal out of the building than anything else.

At least the dust can settle down now after the player rebellion Joakim caused.

We'll see how Joakim gets on at Strømsgodset in Eliteserien and reassess at the end of the season. He's contracted to us until the end of December 2035.

--

At 18 years old, Roger Vestgøte needs to go somewhere as the first choice goalkeeper and Bjarg have given him that opportunity in Tier 3,

--

Steinar Braathen made 21 appearances on loan with Åsane in Eliteserien last season, scoring one goal.

Having assessed him in pre-season, we didn't think Steinar would get much playing time with us so he's gone out on loan to newly promoted Haugesund and will get another season playing Eliteserien.

WE really need Steinar to kick-on while out on loan this time to prove there's a future for him at Viking.

--

We have a lot of time for Kjetil Istre but could only get him three Eliteserien appearances last season.

As we've signed a few central midfielders this off-season, Kjetil will get more playing time out on loan than he would staying at SR-Bank Arena.

Kjetil will be playing in OBOS-ligaen for Staal and we wish him well and look forward to having him back with us this time next year.

"Rosengren Snubs København"

--

We accepted a bid from FC København for Otto Rosengren and rejected one from Al-Batin.

SNUB_Rosengren_Kobenhavn_01.thumb.png.fb7177150f9cbe49c3810968056e6907.png

I'll be honest with you, I didn't really want to lose Otto Rosengren but, at the time, we had too many senior players and couldn't keep them all happy because we didn't have enough UEFA Champions League squad registration slots to go around.

As we were over-stocked in central midfield, we very reluctantly accepted FC København's bid and I fully expected Otto to leave Viking.

SNUB_Rosengren_Kobenhavn_02.png.208f11d972bd9d48a6a8e1ab3eedd092.png

But, due to other developments, it was a huge relief when Otto snubbed FC København and opted to stay at Viking.

I'm delighted Otto is still here with us at the SR-Bank Arena.

"Five Players Leave Viking"

--

Jakob Napoleon Romsaas was brilliant for us during his three seasons at Viking but, as we've strengthened in central midfield, I couldn't see him getting much playing time here.

When the offer came in from FC Midtjylland we reluctantly decided to accept it.

--

We had high hopes for Sindre Grønvold and saw him taking over from Jesper Robertsen at right-back at some point in the next couple of seasons.

Sindre wasn't prepared to be patient though. He got upset when we rejected a bid from Spezia so, when they came back with a second bid, we decided to let him go.

I'm sorry it didn't work out at Viking for Filip Hornburg Møller-Hansen because his ability to play anywhere across the back four was a real asset to us.

But as we strengthened our defence last season, it became increasingly challenging to find room for Filip in our matchday squads.

Total possible Squad size: 30. It looks like you can have up to 25 players under contract and Homegrown. Any more players than that must be either on Youth Contracts or Amateur Contracts.

The 9possible non-homegrown players are subtracted from the 25 players under contract and Homegrown. That is how you get the minimum number of 16 Homegrown players.

I wonder has Oscar Bobb or Brekalo taken Norwegian Citizenship? If NOT then you have room for a total of 23 HGC players and up to five youth players (U-21) on non-professional contracts.

Basically, this gives you a reason to bring some better Academy lads into the team and have them train with the big boys and possibly get some "mop up" duty.

Yes, that’s correct.

Again correct.

What you’re referring to there @Hootieleece is the HGN label for Homegrown in Nation (i.e. Norway) and I’m fine with that.

My confusion is with the HGC label for Homegrown at Club (i.e. Viking). I have two players with the HGC label who count as HGC when I register them for the Champions League but they do not count as HGC when I register them for Eliteserien… and I don’t understand, and can’t work out why.

This is off the top of my head as I’m not on my laptop at the moment.

David Brekalo (currently on loan at Maribor) is non-homegrown.

Oscar Bobb is Norwegian but, I don’t think, he counts as homegrown as he learnt his trade outside of Norway at Manchester City.

Our other non-Homegrown players are:

  • Stefan Lekovic
  • Rafael Mota
  • Otto Rosengren - has taken Norwegian citizenship but that doesn’t change his non-Homegrown status
  • Pontus Dahbo.

I’ll double-check this when I’m next in-game.

So you have Two players who count for HGC for the Champions League, but don't count for the Eliteserien?

So the Game thinks you need 7 spaces for Non Homegrown Players when it should be five? (Bobb and the other four you mentioned)?

Without them do you have 20 HGC players?

I know if in Champions League registration you lose spots for not having enough HGC Players. (25 minus missing players)

Also, in other leagues you can lose squad places for NOT having enough Homegrown players. Maybe for some reason that is what is happening here.

You might want to submit a Bug Report, so SI possibly fixes it for FM25.

Thanks, @Hootieleece

I'm not sure if it's a bug or me not understanding the HGC eligibility rules correctly. They are written differently for Eliteserien and Champions League so it's possible a player could be HGC for one and not the other but as I don't understand fully what the one referencing loans actually means (it's badly written in my opinion) I have no idea and I've wasted enough time now trying to get to the bottom of it.

I'll report it on the Bug Tracker (although it's late now in the FM24 cycle) so we can get this thread back on track.

The Never-ending Season

I must admit with this last season ends, but the European club competitions continue into pre-season and then next season it feels like a Never-ending season.

And given our success at Viking, qualifying for Europe in each of my five seasons in charge, my players have barely had any time off. The Board give them a couple of weeks but have them report back before Christmas. I then give them another 2-3 weeks off and that's it.

How do the Norwegian clubs in European club competitions cope with it in real-life, @XaW?

Currently they don't - this particular issue is due to the swiss style European format which of course doesn't exist in real life till next season. So I suppose we'll have to wait till this time next year for an answer.

Well, lately very few Norwegian teams have competed in Europe after the Newyear, so it's not really been an issue much. In real life most teams end the season around the end of the normal season (around the start of December), and then start pre-season around Jan/Feb. There is also usually a break around Juny/July. This season in real, for example, there are no matches in the top tier from June 2nd to June 27th. So I expect they get a few weeks off then too (unless players are heading to EUROs or something, but since Norway didn't qualify, few will go I think).

So I'm not exactly sure how they work around it when a team goes far in Europe, but other than Bodø/Glimt, it hasn't really been an issue since Rosenborg in the 90s, I think.

Have you compared the information on the Eligibility tab for each of the players on this table? As I think we've discussed before, there are two different types of HGC and the two highlighted guys might not have the required one.

No I haven’t...

... but I have now and, since both players (Roger Vestgøte and Kjetil Istre) are out on loan, I'll need to remember to check again when they are back from loan as the details aren't clear as their loan club shows up - e.g. Vestgote:

Yes, there's the 0-21 HG one which I think is Eliteserien - the one Vestgote isn't HGC for, the only thing I can't tell (because he's on loan at Bjarg) is how many days left at Viking he's got (see above screenshot) .

Here's a screenshot for Jan Erik Dang who is HGC for both competitions:

I'm not quite sure how this will work, with Patrick Berg being a Viking player, not a Bodø/Glimt player any more, but hey, I don't want to let our captain down.

Plus, Bodø/Glimt will pay us £30,000.

The Never-ending season

How do the Norwegian clubs in European club competitions cope with it in real-life?

11 hours ago, I have nothing to say said:

Currently they don't - this particular issue is due to the swiss style European format which of course doesn't exist in real life till next season. So I suppose we'll have to wait till this time next year for an answer.

11 hours ago, XaW said:

Thank you @I have nothing to say and @XaW

We can't get ahead of ourselves. There's no point thinking about the second-leg at our SR-Bank Arena until after we've been to Glasgow and played the first-leg in Celtic Park.

01_Celtic_02b.thumb.png.e20a3dc3beeec1dcd5cca360aa6681c6.png

We're confident, but we're not over confident.

We played Celtic, at home, in December 2030 and won 4-0 but that result doesn't mean anything as both teams have changed a lot since then.

Tinius Sundell is still working his way back to full fitness so we won't risk him tonight.

Otherwise, we have a clean bill of health.

Yes, Celtic's goalkeeper Adam Britton had a very good game, he commanded his penalty area very well.

This was a very tight match, with few chances for either side, and it was decided by fine margins.

We struggled for possession though and only managed around 35% in the first half. In the second half it improved slightly, but we still didn't have enough possession for my liking, so we adjusted and asked our inverted left wing-back to play as a normal wing-back instead. And it worked, by the end of the match we had 48% possession overall so we had more possession than Celtic once we'd made that switch.

Celtic defended very well, blocking quite a few of our chances, whereas we switched off for a 77th minute corner and conceded from a near post header.

It's advantage Celtic, but it's only one goal and we have everything to play for back at our SR-Bank Arena.

It was a tight game at Celtic Park, with very little in it, and we're expecting something similar tonight in our SR-Bank Arena.

Of course, we start the match a goal down after the first leg so we need to pull that back but we'll be patient, there's no need to go gung-ho from the off, and we'll adapt as we see how the match plays out.

We'll need our supporters inside the SR-Bank Arena to be patient and stick with us.

02_Celtic_02b.thumb.png.aaf78c76ee420c6f2888aeae861fbff7.png

Rafael Mota (thigh) and Jonas Therkelsen (shin) picked up knocks in training. Rafael is definitely out, but Jonas will be on the bench if we need him.

02_Celtic_03_injury.png.3ca6c149987583a8f33a0838bf577433.png

Stefan Leković will replace Rafael at centre-back and Tinius Sundell, our new signing from Vålerenga, has recovered from his twisted ankle and will make his debut for Viking at the base of the midfield diamond.

--

Expected Line-up

We had a lot more possession in the first leg when we asked our inverted wing-back on the left to play as a normal wing-back so that's how we'll start tonight.

Three more slight tweaks, we'll ask Oscar Bobb to attack more as Mezzala on the left of the diamond and, on the right, we want Hugo Vetlesen to sit in deeper and look to influence play as a Deep-lying playmaker. We also want Niklas Ødegård to play as an Attacking midfielder at the tip of the diamond because Trequarista doesn't really suit him.

02_Celtic_10a.png.4848fc1fc56971a8ab05e9df922fbeb4.png

Julian Gonstad was only on the pitch for 32 minutes but he certainly made a big difference and has made me think about starting him in our opening Eliteserien match in April.

02_Celtic_10b.thumb.png.bff9841b6c3fc090f97255da1998a5b0.png

It's a hard one to take. I thought we were much improved on how we were in the first leg and comfortably the better team tonight.

We drew 2-2, after coming back from 0-2 down, and should have won tonight to at least force extra-time.

But Adam Britton was, once again, sensational in Celtic's goal and we couldn't score the third and fourth goal we needed, despite having double the attempts as Celtic and more than twice the shots on target they had.

02_Celtic_10c.thumb.png.5874ba10ef75380368c22e05bcc3fc45.png

Their first goal, was against the run of-play, and we just left Keirin Hendrie unmarked at the far post... which isn't good enough.

I was still confident at that point, but then Morgyn Dorrans scored an unbelievable goal two minutes into first half added-on time and, of course, it's uphill after that.

At the break we made two substitutions and changed our shape.

02_Celtic_12_46mins.png.66377a4e92a9259a323b84b8d4e96936.png

We started the second half brightly and Adam Britton made two great saves to deny us.

10 minutes into the second half we asked Lasse Nordås to attack, not support and tactically we looked to simplify things - no longer playing short passes, no longer running at the defence, no longer playing through the middle.

02_Celtic_12_55mins.png.9fe3aa0fe9b331675d7649dd32ce6063.png

We looked better after that but we still couldn't score past Adam Britton, who made an incredible point blank save to deny Anders Hartveit Ryste.

So on 73 minutes, we made more substitutions, threw on an extra striker, no longer playing out of defence and we raised the tempo.

02_Celtic_12_73mins.png.1f8bb4a4a5a88e7a44b7a0b234d999af.png

Edvin Austbø pulled one back on 80 minutes.

Julian Gonstad equalised for 2-2 four minutes later.

But we couldn't get the third goal we needed to go to extra-time, due in a large part to the brilliance of Adam Britton.

02_Celtic_10d.thumb.png.951889f7c57dc3f917509e9cade938e5.png

It's a hard one to take because, over the two legs, I thought we deserved to go through... but fair play to Celtic and good luck to them.

The players can be incredibly proud of themselves. Given the fixtures the draw handed us, the players did magnificently to win five out of eight but we're disappointed because we fancied our chances against Celtic and to lose it in the manner we did leaves a sour taste in the mouth I must admit.

But we give the players two weeks off now - they deserve the rest.

02_Celtic_12_99_2-weeks-off.png.b7703b714487d593f3f263be4b465125.png

And then we get back together in March, work hard in training, play some friendly matches, and make sure we're ready to play Rosenborg away in their Lerkendal to get our Eliteserien campaign underway.

Limited time means I haven't been able to read your updates for a while (love the detail, but struggle to scroll through after long absences).

However, very pleased to see you still going strong in 2033, it's been an epic career so far.

Sorry cannot offer any help on the registration woe, but I had some issues at Reading with permits which strongly suggested to me that some of the implementations were not quite 'as intended'.

Catching up with my agent

--

agent_Hedda_Berg.png.e445c6930d65a47693274dd2d14a71fb.png

Hedda Berg: Hi, Stuni. How are you?

Stuniverse: I'm good, thanks, Hedda. How are you?

Hedda Berg: Good. Commiserations on the Celtic tie.

Results.png.16f8e38cf127499ccc287d77bef7f8e5.png

Stuniverse: Thanks. It's annoying. We'd done amazing in the Champions League League Path to qualify for the playoff and I thought we could beat Celtic, but it wasn't to be. Over the two-legs I thought we shaded it, but we didn't get the breaks and their goalkeeper played out-of-his-skin.

Hedda Berg: And how are you feeling now?

Stuniverse: Oh, I'm over it. I'm looking forward to the new season and pre-season starts properly now we're out of Europe. I'm returning to Loddefjord for a game I'll probably take a look at the U19 / 2nd Team players in, then we have Patrick Berg's testimonial away at Bodø/Glimt which will be weird because Patrick is in his second year as a Viking player, but it's Bodø/Glimt who will be celebrating his 20 seasons service as a Bodø/Glimt player in their Aspmyra Stadion.

Then we have a game at OBOS-ligaen Aalesund, before an away match in Bulgaria against Ludogrets and a home friendly against Club Brugge. I wanted to go back to Hødd as well, but their schedule was too busy to accommodate us.

pre-season_fixtures_Rosenborg.png.0d020f9bdfdcbb3aae55206ce6d7dab9.png

Hedda Berg: Well I hope it goes well and you have a successful season.

Stuniverse: Thanks. We want to do better this season. We were second in Eliteserien and lost the Cupen Final. Both are winnable and that's what we're going for... but it will be difficult as we start in the UEFA Champions League Third Qualifying Round so it depends, to a certain extent, who we draw in that and, if we win, who we then get in the Playoff. Our European campaign will start earlier, which adds pressure to the league schedule much earlier, and the income will be reduced if we end up in the Europa League rather than the Champions League.

Hedda Berg: Well good luck.

Stuniverse: Thank you.

Hedda Berg: Are you still enjoying life at Viking?

2032-top2.thumb.png.b2ac8d601521eae85e25210c74fb2511.png

Stuniverse: Yes. I am. Last season was good, I think we had the best team and squad during my time here, but Molde were just better. We're starting to transition into a younger squad, who will improve with more playing time and experience, and I'm looking forward to working with them and helping them to be the best that they can be. We also have three players now who are regularly called up by Kjetil Knutsen for the Norway senior squad and a few more who are knocking on the door.

Hedda Berg: So, last time we spoke about you, you weren't interested in applying for the Rosenborg or Bodø/Glimt jobs when they became available as you wanted to stay at Viking. I'm guessing that's still the case.

Stuniverse: Yes. I've been here since December 2027 and I must be one of the longest-serving of the Eliteserien managers.

Hedda Berg: Your're third actually, behind Tore André Flo at Sogndal and Thomas Holm at Sandnes Ulf.

Manager_time-in-job.thumb.png.7c7b0c7d4227934534546f76a31b4c2f.png

Stuniverse: Oh, ok. But yes, I'm loving life in Stavanger, I'm enjoying working with this great group of players, the new Chairperson Kjell Fjæreide is supportive, and I think we have a great chance of winning things.

Hedda Berg: You're current contract expires at the end of December 2034 so you're contracted for this coming season and the season after. How do you think you'll feel in two seasons time?

MyContract.thumb.png.c29147ee1acab1fda572410d7871338f.png

Stuniverse: Good question, Hedda, but... to be honest, if Mr. Fjæreide hasn't sacked me, then I think I'd still like to be working here at the SR-Bank Arena.

Hedda Berg: You don't think you'll get tired of it.

Stuniverse: No. I've built the squad here, if I went anywhere else I'd have to do all that hard work all over again. I did consider applying for Rosenborg and Bodø/Glimt but decided, no. I'm in a good place here right now. We are the only Rich club, we have the third highest attendances and season ticket holders. I can't think of a better place for me to be as I'm very happy in Norway, I have no intention of moving abroad, and I can't see the Norway job becoming available any time soon as Kjetil Knutsen is doing a very good job.

Secure01.png.bc691a7a3451f2c6f54fff966a2478ca.png

Secure02.png.5a3aaca7ff662e3b93f57db02864f2d3.png

Hedda Berg: In that case, I think we should strike while the iron's hot and the Viking Board are pleased with you. How do you feel about me approaching Viking Chairperson Kjell Fjæreide about a new contract.

Stuniverse: Isn't it a bit early with two seasons left on my current deal?

Hedda Berg: Not if you want to stay longer, if you're sure you want to stay longer. And if Mr. Fjæreide thinks it's too early then he'll tell me.

Stuniverse: OK. Yeah, let's do that.

Hedda Berg: Cool. Leave it with me.

Stuniverse: Thank you.

I think if Viking were winning everything domestically, winning the Eliteseserien-Cupen double every season, and doing well in Europe, then that would probably be the case as it would be too easy and I'd be getting bored.

But, as you've seen, we didn't win any silverware last season and it isn't easy.

Odd is the team Stuni Stuniverse supports and, when I started the save in Tier 4, managing Odd at some point was the aim... but I got the Viking job first and my career took off.

Right now, I've been at Viking six years and it feels like home.

As always, it's an honour to go back to Alvoen Stadion to play Loddefjord, where my managerial career started.

Unfortunately, Loddefjord are still in Tier 5.

00_no_injuries.png.1cb60d97bf9c4ec21d9e7a13d88d2403.png

We have clean bill of health so I'm going to start our #3 goalkeeper Sander Lønning and 10 younger players from the 2nd Team and U19s. I may make a few substitutions but I really want to give them all a full 90 minutes if we can.

01_Loddefjord_03.png.8019837779de5c8a92f95f6f3643a2e7.png

I felt like we'd over-complicated our tactics in recent UEFA European Champions League matches so we're going to reset back to the basics and go with a simpler 4-4-2 diamond tactic.

For saying our oldest outfield player is 25, the next oldest is 24, and the others were all 20 or younger, I'm very happy with the way we played today.

They all performed very well and I saw enough to keep some of them in the first team squad at least until the end of pre-season.

01_Loddefjord_06.png.a60c3b2c8ebe665a48859d762edc0406.png

We completely outplayed Loddefjord, scored four goals and kept a clean sheet.

Matches don't get much better than that.

I would have put bonuses in for winning the League and the Cup and possibly making the knockouts of Champions League.

Otherwise, it's a great deal for you in this Save.

Thanks @Hootieleece

To be honest, probably because I know it’s a game and not real money, other than the length of contract and the Club Vision / Expectation elements, I’m not too worried about the financial details of the contract.

We go to Aspmyra to play Bodø/Glimt in Patrick Berg's testimonial today. Patrick was an amazing servant to Bodø/Glimt, playing something like 19 or 20 seasons for them, which means it'll be a surreal match as Patrick is in his second season as a Viking player.

02_Bodo_03_Berg.png.a9857ba9f1a14d376bf402f5653bbe65.png

But we'll be without Patrick today as he'll be playing for Bodø/Glimt.

02_Bodo_03_injury1.png.47f11e0d16604eb465278640aa280494.png

We'll also be without Hugo Vetlesen (hip) for a while and Hugo will probably miss the start of the season in April.

02_Bodo_03_injury2.png.3a6425ee5c0e753bd91e6f31dd0b8668.png

Oscar Bobb (hamstring) also picked up an injury this week but we don't think it's that serious.

02_Bodo_04.png.adbeabe83ca185d18f34d5704c7f1f12.png

The youngsters played very well against Loddefjord with a simplified 4-4-2 diamond so we'll try the same tactic, near enough, with the senior players back in against Bodø/Glimt today.

I'll probably give the starters around an hour and then make 11 substitutions for the last 30 minutes.

Patrick Berg's testimonial got even more surreal as Bodø/Glimt manager Thomas Thomasberg didn't select him so poor Patrick played no part in his own testimonial.

I don't know if it's due to the fact that Thomas hasn't been Bodø/Glimt manager for long so Patrick never played for him or something else (bugged?)?

02_Bodo_07.png.a7c82d3934287ee1488da17d8deedc95.png

As it was we bossed the game from start to finish and were comfortably in control, our only failing was that we struggled to get our shots and headers on target.

We had to be patient, but got our reward in the 81st minute when Anders Hartveit Ryste, a half-time sub for Julian Gonstad (ankle), scored with a thunderbolt of a shot from outside the penalty area.

Preview - Aalesund (a), friendly

03_AAlesund_00.png.1e073de51711ef9dae4acb9500c8ed81.png

This friendly match away at OBOS-ligaen Aalesund will be for the players who didn't feature much in the Champions league playoff against Celtic. I'll probably give them the full match.

Then we have two more friendlies - away at Ludogorets and home to Club Brugge - to prepare for our Eliteserien opener away at Rosenborg.

03_AAlesund_03_injury.png.8d9c9327d28cef2e0cc79d49ec86335b.png

Tinius Sundell (heel) joined the injury list this week.

03_AAlesund_03_fitness.png.3df0bf3e6491185b73e0252774d45f95.png

We probably won't risk Oscar Bobb (hamstring) today.

We'll continue with our simplified 4-4-2 diamond system.

We selected quite a young team today so I'm delighted that they performed so well and comfortably beat Aalesund at Color Line Stadion.

Krzysztof Krysiak and Anders Hartveit Ryste scored our goals.

If I was being critical though, we still didn't test their goalkeeper enough.
