Yeah, Strømsgodset won by the odd goal in seven when we played them earlier in the season at their Marienlyst Stadion.

05_Stromsgodset_02b.thumb.png.12bbaeb44cc1a8cf3eee1cc9a52c8f0e.png

Petter Sjåholm has got Strømsgodset playing very well this season and they are second, just three points behind us.

05_Stromsgodset_02c.png.388a37c74e9cea88404a171c983dba76.png

That makes this top versus second match today a very significant one for Strømsgodset as well as us.

I've had a quiet word with Henrique Araújo about his recent below par form.

I'm thrilled with this win - we blew Strømsgodset away - and delighted for the 17,338 Viking supporters in an SR-Bank Arena attendance of 17,580.

Henrique Araújo gave us a ninth minute lead, Henrik Skogvold doubled our lead five minutes later, and Edvin Austbø made it three on 23 minutes.

Ove Benjamin Modell had a 26th minute goal ruled out for offside.

Less than a minute into the second half, Daniel Daga made it four.

Henrique Araújo hit the post on 59 minutes.

The only blip came after 81 minutes when Edvin Austbø gave the ball away in our own penalty area, Ove Benjamin Modell made a half-hearted tackle, and Strømsgodset scored a consolation goal.

Bill Freeman made it five on 87 minutes with an acrobatic volley and substitute Anders Hartveit Ryste scored our sixth on his return from a hamstring injury.

05_Stromsgodset_09b_injury.thumb.png.8c575683bd7650700db1bff4141ecfce.png

Sadly, Mamady Diambou had to go off after 56 minutes and it looks like he may be out a while.

Sarpsborg are rock bottom and have lost their last eight Eliteserien matches.

On paper, I can see why that makes us strong favourites, but Sarpsborg won't want to lose a ninth straight in front of their own supporters in Sarpsborg Stadion.

06_Sarpsborg_02b.thumb.png.cd47c45bdeee752dc171a6d581a1101c.png

I liked Alexander Frei but, after losing eight on the spin and plummeting to the bottom of Eliteserien, I can understand why the Sarpsborg Board sacked him.

What that means for the Sarpsborg team, with Stein Berg Johansen in temporary charge, is anybody's guess.

It could galvanise them against us today or it could go the other way for them.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst... we're confident we can go to Sarpsborg Stadion and get a positive result.

Anders Hartveit Ryste came on as a 58th minute substitute and 17 minutes later he scored our second goal, after Henrik Skogvold had given us a first half lead.

Five minutes after that, Anders Hartveit Ryste scored his second goal of the game.

06_Sarpsborg_09b.thumb.png.f0b9a0fefd188a228167d1e4bd7eebc0.png

Sarpsborg were in really bad form and we're in really good form so, yes, we were very confident of getting a win here.

06_Sarpsborg_09c.thumb.png.be3481bb1f1fcddd927fe2ba6da4bac6.png

Costel Tilincă got a knock on his ankle and had to come off in the first half.

I don't think it's too serious but we will be without him for a few weeks.

Henrik Skogvold felt some tightness in his thigh as well and we took him off in the second half as a precaution.

Bodø/Glimt Sign Bobb

OUT_Bobb_02_spoiler.thumb.png.dad5810cbdf6ed5a9d63f2d29de03ebc.png

I'm really sad to see Oscar Bobb leave Viking Fotballklubb. Oscar was my first signing when I joined Viking in 2028, initially on loan, and he's been brilliant for us ever since.

Unfortunately I couldn't give him much playing time last season, or this season, and we loaned him out to Bodø/Glimt in the second half of last season.

Oscar never moaned or complained and played for Viking II this season to a high standard.

I wish him all the very best for the future.

It's been an honour and a privilege to work with Oscar Bobb.

terrible record? Really?

Morten Røssland has managed a few teams during the time I've been at Viking but they did win by the only goal of the game against us in our SR-Bank Arena earlier this season, a game where we didn't have our shooting boots on.

01_Sogndal_02d.png.e2bc5b9601a5d45842133642680679b5.png

And in 2033, Morten Røssland's Haugesund did do the double over us winning both Viking-Haugesund derbies.

So, maybe I do have a terrible record against Morten Røssland?!?!

01_Sogndal_02b.thumb.png.1deaca7259a5444472ec2a33f7377fa3.png

Morten Røssland certainly has Sogndal going well this season. They're 10th but, like you say, are unbeaten in their last six with three wins and three draws.

Obviously, today in their Fosshaugane Campus, we want to make up for that defeat earlier in the season.

01_Sogndal_02c.thumb.png.5acd59e8c7b2500af3ebd568b8f4ceea.png

We've brought Jens Hjertø-Dahl in to do a job.

Question - Manager head-to-head records... ?

--

In FM24, does anybody know if it’s possible to get direct head-to-head stats against other managers?

I know you can go into Schedule, highlight a fixture in the list, and click Previous Meetings to get head-to-heads for that team against the team you’re currently managing, but can you get the head-to-head against specific managers anywhere?

Many thanks.

The top post in GD "How Do I?" tends to get quick and excellent replies. However, since you're there, how do I 'tag' someone?

Thanks, @phnompenhandy. I've asked the question in there as well...

Simples... first type an at sign "@", then start typing the person you want to tag's username and a drop-down list should appear and you then select them.

Sogndal (10th) v Viking (1st)

We want to win every game we play, we know we won't always win but we go out every game with the intention of winning. So I'm thrilled we won the game, it doesn't matter who the opposition manager is.

It was a funny game. Sogndal started on the front foot and put us under pressure in the opening five minutes, then we completely controlled the game up until the final five minutes when Sogndal threw everything they had at us for the last five minutes plus added on time, including sending their goalkeeper Ondřej Žák up into our penalty area for every set-piece.

Edvin Austbø hit the post in the 7th minute. That seemed to settle us down and we dominated the game after that.

Henrik Skogvold gave us the lead on 28 minutes.

It always had the feel of a game where we'd need the security of a second goal. We created plenty of chances but Ondřej Žák (7.6) was superb in Sogndal's goal.

Bill Freeman then hit the post just before half-time.

Four minutes into the second-half, the referee awarded us a penalty for a trip on Bill Freeman... but VAR sent the referee to the monitor and, after reviewing the screen, he changed his mind. No penalty.

On 55 minutes, Bill Freeman put Anders Hartveit Ryste clean through with a lovely pass, Anders scored but the flag had gone up for offside before the ball hit the back of the net.

Substitute Henrique Araújo also had the ball in the net on 80 minutes but he was adjudged to have been offside as well.

We couldn't get that second goal and we were grateful to our own goalkeeper, Jasper Torkildsen when Sogndal threw everything at us in the closing minutes. Jasper came and claimed every cross and corner into our penalty area and made an excellent save late on.

It would've been nice to have scored more, our play deserved that, but we'll take the one-goal win and move on.

01_Sogndal_09b.thumb.png.a0d13861d458848225c171be1c4ce08a.png

Edvin Austbø graduated through the Viking Academy. Edvin is now in his 15th season at Viking and playing as well as he's ever done. And he's only 30 so, hopefully, he still has a fair few more seasons playing for us.

01_Sogndal_12_24mins.png.973b96563c68dad5c1ec0f09026a182b.png

Around the 25-minute mark, Edvin Austbø gashed his leg but we decided to let him play on and we'd keep an eye on him.

We eventually replaced him after 67 minutes.

01_Sogndal_09c.thumb.png.54dd662cb0294c4109dfa87b7f0243c1.png

I thought Henrik Skogvold was excellent today, he caused Sogndal all kinds of problems down our left-wing, and he scored the only goal of the game as well.

01_Sogndal_09d.thumb.png.8bfd41fb16c30be15a2765670dde5930.png

Yeah, Jens Hjertø-Dahl came on off the bench on 67 minutes and I was pleased with his contribution.

01_Sogndal_09e.thumb.png.4683e124e06068a9553d54394528fb52.png

I'm very happy with the squad we have and, whilst I'd never say never, it's more likely we'll move one or two fringe players out to make room to register some of our Academy graduates who need playing time to aid their development.

Gonstad Unhappy We Rejected Tromsø Bid

We received a loan to buy bid for Julian Gonstad from Tromsø which proposed an optional transfer fee of £750K at the end of the season if they wanted to sign him permanently. I asked for £2.5M and instead of countering back, Tromsø cancelled their offer. So it's a bit unfair to say we rejected or blocked Tromsø's approach.

I do want to move at least one of our fringe strikers out so that I can give playing time to Dawid Zając and / or Robert Reyes but I'd prefer to keep Julian for now as he's the best finisher at the club. His all-round play isn't the best but he's a great super sub late on if we desperately need a goal.

Discussion with Torkildsen

Meeting_Torkildsen_01.png.a2af5ebb2318a17bb4a67f883713644f.png

Being honest, whilst there's not much to choose between Jasper Torkildsen and Hans Jørgen Solberg, Jasper is my captain and, if I had to choose, he'd be my number one which is why I started Jasper in all the UEFA Europa League matches.

Torkildsen-v-Solberg_01.thumb.png.b54872166f4a66e6cf2b2fb5b8ce75f6.png

Maybe if I'd played him in more Eliteserien matches, instead of Cup matches, he may have been happier with his playing time.

Maybe... maybe not...

Anyway, at this stage I want to try and get Jasper Torkildsen back on side again.

Torkildsen keen to discuss personal matters

--

Meeting_Torkildsen_01.png.ee73d16d92c65038dfc524a92d18dc44.png

So when Anders Hatveit Ryste gave me a heads-up on Sunday that Jasper Torkildsen was unhappy with his playing, I took "I don't think Jasper is expecting anything from you at the moment" literally and ignored it, hoping it wouldn't escalate until Jasper was back from International duty.

But apparently not.

So it looks like I need to decide which goalkeeper - Jasper Torkildsen or Hans Jørgen Solberg - is going to be my number one at Viking.

But which one?

Although Jasper has made more starts than Hans Jørgen Solberg this season, most of those have been in the UEFA Europa League or Cupen and he's only started two Eliteserien matches, so I can understand why he sees himself as the Cup Goalkeeper.

Just catching up after a week away, great job on reaching the Europa Final - such a horrible way to lose it, but you gave a great account of yourselves. I'd agree that playing a calender league is almost certainly a hindrance when it comes to continental competitions and is a large part of why I avoid such leagues at all costs.

RE: The 'struggling to meet pace of match' thing, I think somebody else already answered, but I typically see this for players with low match fitness coming into a game when you are playing a high-tempo. I tend to ignore this completely, along with the similar status 'would rather have stayed on the bench'.

RE: The head-to-head thing, I don't think you can see this - only by club. Although, that said, I've never really gone looking for it. I'd offer to have a look for you, but my save has wound down now and I've stopped FM24, working through my backlog until FM25 (whenever that may appear).

Hope you had a great time, @BML. I've been away for the weekend as well.

Thank you. I thought we shaded the Europa Final and, as I said earlier on the thread, even though there were few chances I felt we always looked the most likely to score so I was reluctant to change things and try to force it. I felt we'd get at least one goal in 120 minutes but it wasn't to be. And then we lost on penalties.

You and @Hootieleece are probably correct on that but it adds something to it...

Yeah, I'm not worrying about it and the 'would rather have stayed on the bench' one just makes me laugh.

I've asked on here, and also on a couple of other places in the SI Forum and nobody has responded so, I'm thinking, it isn't possible.

Vålerenga are 2nd in Eliteserien, six points behind us, and Mesay Dego's side are unbeaten in their last six, five wins and one draw, and they've won their last four on the spin so we know Vålerenga will be very difficult opponent's, as they always are.

Hopefully, home advantage in our SR-Bank Arena will help us to the victory we're desperate to achieve for the Viking faithful.

05_Valerenga_02b.thumb.png.0c54fa7fc3a1da4a8bb5fb2790bed5ce.png

I'm sure Mesay Dego will have thoroughly prepared Vålerenga for this match.

I first encountered Mesay Dego when he was manager of Rosenborg before he became Vålerenga manager.

We beat Vålerenga 2-0 in their Intility Arena earlier this season but last season we failed to beat Vålerenga, losing away and drawing at home.

Generally, during my time at Viking, we've had the better of our encounters with Vålerenga but we've lost enough games to them to know we will have to be at our best to get anything out of the game.

Viking (1st) v Vålerenga (2nd)

We're always looking to improve the squad but I'm very happy with the current group of players and we're not actively looking to bring anybody in.

That said, there's a lot of interest in quite a few of our players and we've rejected over a dozen bids already.

I'll be ecstatic if the transfer window closes and we still have this squad together but we have to be prepared with our contingency plans just in case.

05_Valerenga_09b.thumb.png.1d98f155fc260c37df73c559d1e435ac.png

We deserved to win the match, I thought, and just about managed it in the end but the odds were against us when Vålerenga broke the deadlock after 58 minutes, very much against the run of play.

In the first half, we hardly allowed Vålerenga a look-in and created the better chances.

Unfortunately, Edvin Austbø hitting the post on 26 minutes was the closest we came as we didn't test Vålerenga's goalkeeper anywhere near enough.

At half-time, we replaced both wingers. Henrik Skogvold because he was on a yellow card and Edvin Austbø because he was looking fatigued.

The second half continued in a similar pattern although Vålerenga grew in confidence the longer the game went on.

58 minutes in, against the run of play, Vålerenga took the lead.

We changed then to a more Attacking mentality and shape.

05_Valerenga_12_59mins.png.10bfb6e70c0271c211633a0951210792.png

We threatened more, but Vålerenga defended well, throwing themselves into blocks and Mert Alegoz made an outstanding save to deny Henrique Araújo.

On 76 minutes we finally equalised when recent signing Jens Hjertø-Dahl headed in Kasper Jakobsen's corner from the left at the far post.

It was a special moment, and we were all off the bench going crazy... I was, my backroom staff were, our substitutes were.

Another Kasper Jakobsen corner, this time from the right, finished off by a superb Henrique Araújo strike.

We then made changes designed to see the game out which, a couple of scares aside, we were able to do.

Bjørkeng Unhappy Sarpsborg Decision

--

UNHAPPY_Bjorkeng_01.png.326e8320e6e9ae83390c50ba10f78970.png

We received a loan to buy offer for Øyvind Bjørkeng from Sarpsborg but we negotiated it because we thought £39.5K wasn't enough but £100K was more realistic.

Sarpsborg cancelled their offer which was a shame really because Øyvind Bjørkeng doesn't figure in my plans but he's good enough that we're not going to just give him away.

Torkildsen Signs New Viking Contract

--

NEW-Contract_Torkildsen_01.png.b93ce2ebe19d6477444ed2ac07575efc.png

I know, during this Viking Goalkeeper Jasper Torkildsen v Hans Jørgen Solberg saga, some of you have advised me to go with the younger, Hans Jørgen Solberg, but, I'm sorry, I've decided to make my captain, Jasper Torkildsen, the #1 Viking goalkeeper.

When we started contract negotiations, Jasper Torkildsen didn't even ask for a pay-rise, proposing £5K per week, but I decided to offer him £8K (which is still £6.5K per week less than we are paying my other goalkeeper, Hans Jørgen Solberg).

Well, I think you've only got two options - sell him and pocket the cash, or don't sell him and deal with the angst and arguments for years. If Torkildsen runs out of road in a year or two you'll have a ready-made replacement. But if he has another 5 or 6 years in him, that's a lot of micro-managing ahead of you.

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer; it's more a question of how much work you're prepared to do.

As I said last season, I'd have sold Solberg :D

Yep, I think those are my options, @warlock

I must admit, though, with Jasper Torkildsen picking up a hernia, it's great reassurance knowing I have Hans Jørgen Solberg as his back-up.

Agreed... I'm fortunate to have two great goalkeepers at Viking Fotbalklubb, currently the second and third best goalkeepers in Norway according to Norway manager Kjetil Knutsen.

Preview - Sandefjord (away)

Eliteserien

Eivind Kampen is now in his fourth season as Sandefjord manager and is doing a great job.

Last season, as a newly promoted team, Sandefjord finished 14th and defeated Hamarkameratene in the Playout to stay in Eliteserien.

This season, Sandefjord have really kicked-on and are unbeaten in their last three Eliteserien matches - two wins and a draw.

06_Sandefjord_02b.thumb.png.54a165b918025acfdaa3038e6e647bc1.png

Yeah, we have a very good record against Sandefjord and won earlier this season at our SR-Bank Arena.

06_Sandefjord_02_previous.png.cea93c5ed8d7df43111eef5b9028e0f8.png

But, as I always say, previous encounters mean nothing as each game is different and past history has no real bearing.

06_Sandefjord_02c.thumb.png.186007db3f5ce809cb3efd68e2c2922f.png

I've recently made Jasper Torkildsen my number one so, yes, it's a blow but we're fortunate to have an extremely competent replacement in Hans Jørgen Solberg.

06_Sandefjord_02d.thumb.png.f570fbce200c58c713032e35ca24ee61.png

Like Jasper TorkildsenHans Jørgen Solberg is a current Norwegian international so, yes, there's no doubt that if Hans Jørgen does well during Jasper's absence then he'll give me a selection headache to ponder.

06_Sandefjord_02e.thumb.png.f4fa18a3165ea126735dda3c3070fdd6.png

We won't be seeing Sindre Grønvold back in training for a couple of months at least.

Sandefjord (10th) v Viking (1st)

06_Sandefjord_09a.png.1c4259dc16d52d980aa1fdc5e1a56c50.png

We knew Sandefjord were a good team before the match and we're even more aware of that after the match.

Sandefjord made it very difficult for us today.

We needed Hans Jørgen Solberg to be alert in the third minute when a ball over the top put Torstein Torp clean through with only our goalkeeper to beat. Hans Jørgen stood his ground, made himself as big as possible, and saved Torp's shot.

Two minutes later, at the other end, Bill Freeman hit a screamer into the top corner to break the deadlock.

On 22 minutes, with Jesper Robertsen taking a knock in the build-up, Joakim Berg Nundal crossed low into the penalty area and Anders Hartveit Ryste hit the post.

Sandefjord didn't let their heads drop, credit to them, and from a 24th minute corner, Abdoulaye Faye headed the ball against the far post and, in the scramble that followed, Sandefjord equalised when Thomas Steindalstind powered the ball over the line.

06_Sandefjord_09b.thumb.png.21acabe199a351d66315a248a330bc3e.png

Yeah, Joakim Berg Nundal then lost his head, took Jesús Baena out with a scissor-like tackle from behind, and on 35 minutes we were down to 10-men.

Joakim is bitterly disappointed but, the way the players responded, particularly in the second half, is testament to their spirit and character.

After the sending off, we adjusted things but tried to stay true to our principles.

06_Sandefjord_12_35mins.png.d276cef017f7bb2e63e335df0fbea56c.png

We looked nervous but we settled the players down during the break.

Even with only 10 players, I thought we created the better chances in the second half and Abdullah Sheikhah made some fine saves to keep Sandefjord level.

In the 71st minute, Jens Hjertø-Dahl was pushed in the back from a corner. Anders Hartveit Ryste stepped up, sent Abdullah Sheikhah the wrong way from the penalty spot, and we were back in front.

And then, three minutes later, Bill Freeman scored his second and our third goal of the game.

Sandefjord hit the bar with a long-range looping shot with 10 minutes to go.

We thought about making changes to shore things up but, to be honest, Sandefjord weren't really threatening us much and weren't taking advantage of the extra man.

06_Sandefjord_09c.thumb.png.36a6f704411a8b089a034161fe2117d1.png

Frankly, I think it looked worse than it actually was.

Joakim knows he made a mistake but, in all honesty, I think he was just trying to win the ball back for us and got carried away.

He certainly isn't a dirty player.

06_Sandefjord_09d.thumb.png.340830979ae3e68ec9e93f608de20d0c.png

We ask the players to compete. If the opposition have the ball, or if we give it away, we ask the players to win the ball back.

I won't apologise for that.

06_Sandefjord_09e.thumb.png.eadb9f54e6a58609872d928c30344453.png

Winning at home is one thing, but winning away from home is a lot harder and I'm so proud of this group of players.

07_Bodo_01aa.thumb.png.da5b7037d3204d936dc8b54609680131.png

Of course, Oscar Bobb is a quality player but he's not the only good player Bodø/Glimt have.

We'll have to be at our best to get anything out of this match against a Bodø/Glimt team who are unbeaten in their last six Eliteserien matches, four wins and two draws.

I'm sure Bodø/Glimt will be determined to make amends and it's up to us to make sure they don't.

We're on a very good unbeaten run at the moment and this group of players have been there before, done it before, and they're too experienced to become complacent during the run-in.

Any win against Bodø/Glimt is a big result because they are a very good team.

I'm sure Thomas Thomasberg and his Bodø/Glimt team will be disappointed by their performance today but a lot of that is down to how well we played and how hard we worked to stop them.

We scored four goals and could easily have scored more.

At the other end, we notched up another clean sheet.

All in all, a pretty perfect match.

Sindre Grønvold will be out for at least another month with a hip injury.

As the transfer window closes in less than a week, it looks likely Sindre Grønvold will still be a Viking player for the rest of this season, at least, so we'll see where we are with him once Sindre returns to full training.
