Viking (1st) v Bodø/Glimt (10th)

Eliteserien

I think this is a record for me, 10 newgens in the starting 11. Who'd have thought that I'd be doing that at the start of this save, eh @samboing ?

Henrique Araújo was outstanding today against his former club. He may be 34 years old, but you'd never guess it the way he runs around like a young whippersnapper.

05_Bodo_09b.thumb.png.7442fa945a482e7997c004c5c051ddff.png

Bill Freeman was excellent today. Both the strikers were awesome.

05_Bodo_09c.thumb.png.8a2594a354a2a124feef3d65cb03c563.png

I know, the SR-Bank Arena was rocking by the end.

We started well. Tinius Sundell nearly took the net off its stanchion with a thunderous 6th minute volley but the goal was disallowed because Henrique Araújo was deemed offside and interfering with play.

A minute later, Bodø/Glimt's goalkeeper, Rasmus Olesen (7.1), made a brilliant save low down by his right post to keep Ove Benjamin Modell's near post header out.

But, on 23 minutes, Øyvind Bekkevold was adjudged to have handled from a Bodø/Glimt corner and a penalty was awarded. And just like that, totally against the run of play, we were a goal down.

Rasmus Olesen made some good saves to keep Bodø/Glimt's slender lead and we trailed at the break.

05_Bodo_12a_46mins.png.d6cbd5f30c1ce7ce261e0938007d318b.png

At half time I took it upon myself to be bad-cop this time.

We made two changes and switched to an Attacking mentality.

05_Bodo_12b_46mins.png.2db20bcaad7f31c884030491084d737b.png

Within two minutes of the restart we were back on level terms after Henrique Araújo scored against his former club.

And six minutes later, Bill Freeman rounded the goalkeeper and scored to give us the lead for the first time in the match.

Sadly, 55 minutes in, we lost Costel Tilincă to an ankle injury. I only hope he's back soon and it doesn't rule him out of the UEFA European Championship Finals with Romania.

It was particularly pleasing to see us pressing Bodø/Glimt back in the closing minutes and Henrique Araújo scored his second goal, and our third, on 90+4 minutes to wrap the game up.

And there was still time for Bill Freeman to smash a free-kick against the post.

Wow, you will have to rotate the squad for the Sogndal match since so many players are away on international duty.

I know, @Hootieleece... it doesn't seem very fair, does it, rearranging a match because of International call-ups for an earlier date when the international players will still be away on International duty.

And Sogndal are 7th so it won't be an easy match.

Unless they'll return after the friendly and then go back again for the European Championship Finals themselves... but that doesn't seem very likely.

Solberg Keeping His Options Open

Spoiler

Now that I'm seriously leaning towards Hans Jørgen Solberg being Viking's #1 goalkeeper, I really need him to extend his contract and commit to Viking long-term (as Jasper Torkildsen has already done).

So I had a word with his agent.

Solberg-options-open.png.e6c4ed87206d35f9bd1505223e57153d.png

Which is a shame because Jasper Torkildsen (who was brilliant against Lillestrøm the other day in Cupen) has extended his stay at Viking until 31st December 2039.

If Hans Jørgen Solberg won't extend his contract then, at some point this season, I'm going to have to go back to Jasper Torkildsen being Viking's #1 and look to sell Hans Jørgen for a transfer fee because I can't risk a player of his ability walking away on a free at the end of his contract.

Solberg-options-open.png.e6c4ed87206d35f9bd1505223e57153d.png

I get it, of course I do, I'd be hypocritical if I didn't as I'm also waiting until after the UEFA European Football Championship...

NOR_Knutsen_to_step_down.png.1e33304df41c8b0341eb9967ea280bad.png

... to see if Kjetil Knutsen does actually step-down as I'd be very keen on applying for the Norway manager's job.

No, not at all. Mjøndalen are 8th in Norsk Tipping-ligaen Avdeling 2 (Tier 4).

I've selected a team for today that I believe is good enough to get us through to the Third Round.

I wanted to give Anders Gustavsen some playing time at left wing-back which meant Øyvind Bekkevold had to miss out but he's only being rested.

Sure, we've freshened the team up a bit today, but not as much as I'd have liked due to our growing injury list.

Morten Synnes would've featured today but, instead, he's suspended for this one after his red card in the First Round against Lillestrøm.

We came to the Consto Arena today and spoilt Mjøndalen's big day. I make no apology for that as we went with a rotated team, a mix of young players, players on their way back from injury, and our two main strikers up front.

Henrique Araújo hit the post after only three minutes.

I was relieved when the clock got to four minutes and Eirik Bakk was still on the pitch, after his two cards (yellow plus yellow equals red)  against Lillestrøm at the end of March. Eirik has been in the Viking-wilderness since then but I thought it was time to bring him back today.

Goals from Benjamin Thoresen FaraasHenrique Araújo (penalty) and Bill Freeman had us 3-0 up within half-an hour.

Benjamin Thoresen Faraas hit the post on 33 minutes.

Eirik Bakk picked up a yellow card after 29 minutes and we changed his role slightly and asked him to Ease off Tackles. At half time, we substituted him.

06_Mjondalen_12_46mins.png.b9b521582cd0469370dab6984a23a01b.png

We also sent on young Sven Arne Austevik.

Spoiler

06_Mjondalen_12_46mins_austevik.thumb.png.efe2a7f5d3c0851a959e594905d24212.png

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first.

Edvin Austbø made it four, Bill Freeman with his second made it five, and I was delighted for Sven Arne Austevik when he scored his first senior goal for Viking to make it six.

06_Mjondalen_18.png.572ef705a248475f77360b867e2c1dca.png

Football can be funny sometimes, if Morten Synnes hadn't got sent off in the previous round it would probably have been Morten and not Sven Arne who I gave the nod to during the break. Now, Sven Arne Austevik may have overtaken Morten Synnes in the pecking order.

Brede Norbye took a knock to his foot late on but, rightly or wrongly, we decided to keep him on and nurse him through the closing minutes.

Interesting side note future American President Ronald Reagan played George Gipp in a movie that the speech was memorialized in.

I think Joachim Paulsen is just getting a bit carried away after we won at the Haugesund Sparebank Arena in our last encounter which was his first Viking-Haugesund derby as Haugesund manager.

01_Haugesund_02b.thumb.png.2fbfcce77cb605da4dc100395f751045.png

As I said, I don't take it personally. I think Joachim Paulsen is just getting a bit carried away

01_Haugesund_02c.thumb.png.5f81627ef947405d80281f4d0e2e1d40.png

Yes, there was no Viking-Haugesund derby last season with Haugesund being in OBOS-ligaen

01_Haugesund_02d.png.4d851f0f27b4d953c320786ed6ce9504.png

Three seasons ago, Haugesund did the double over us when Morten Røssland was Haugesund manager.

Two seasons ago, it was our turn as we beat Morten Røssland's Haugesund at our SR-Bank Arena and later that season we also beat Joachim Paulsen's Haugesund at the Haugesund Sparebank Arena.

01_Haugesund_02e.thumb.png.8aad9716c41235ebb1a77f00e7eadaf0.png

Haugesund are on a bad run at the moment, whereas we're in very good form.

But that goes out of the window in a Viking-Haugesund derby. We have to want it more than them if we're to get anything out of the game.

I think Joachim Paulsen is just hurting after a 6-1 loss at home in the Viking-Haugesund derby.

01_Haugesund_09b.thumb.png.bc17f51aa41b31af1985796c23ac0f15.png

An early goal is always important so for Benjamin Thoresen Faraas to score after eight minutes was perfect for us.

01_Haugesund_09c.thumb.png.11e213d59a4533f68a2bd872a97a0799.png

Kasper Jakobsen is improving with every game and he showed his quality with his two goals in the 72nd and 77th minutes.

01_Haugesund_09d.thumb.png.5a7b4cc8003314ef5a0925f5d2f91198.png

Henrique Araújo is a joy to watch when he plays like that.

He doubled our lead for 2-0 on 26 minutes.

Henrique Araújo went down in the penalty area after a heavy challenge in the 42nd minute. Henrique Araújo got up, took the spot-kick himself, and scored his second goal.

Boris Milivojević earnt a red card for throwing an elbow in the face of Henrique Araújo and Haugesund were down to 10-men in first half added-on time.

We were always in control and our supporters should enjoy having the bragging rights at work now.

David Ezeh's 29th minute shot was going wide but it deflected in off the chest of Jakub Dufek.

Bill Freeman took a 52nd minute free-kick which hit the post.

Two minutes later, Edvin Austbø made it 4-1

On 67 minutes, Haugesund went close when David Ezeh hit the post.

Then came Kasper Jakobsen's brace for 6-1.

Viking and Strømsgodset missing Internationals

--

02_Stromsgodset_03_internationals_02.png.c08124f5ed94a04d6abe36db6f290db5.png

This looks ominous with at least eight Viking first team players away on International duty (12 if you include youth internationals).

At least Strømsgodset have at least four players away on International duty so that's something...

Preview - Strømsgodset (away)

Aleksander Liland isn't the only player we are missing due to Internationals and I really don't understand why this Cupen-tie wasn't postponed.

We won 2-1 at Strømsgodset's Marienlyst Stadion earlier this season in Eliteserien, but this will be a completely different game as we have eight first team players away on International duty, including our number one and number two goalkeepers, and Strømsgodset are missing two players with another two having only just returned.

02_Stromsgodset_03_int-duty.png.e5d718d35694caab46774a6f0d151215.png

Additionally, Bill Freeman (Liberia) and Anders Gustavsen (Norway U21s) have only just returned and are somewhat jaded.

02_Stromsgodset_02b.thumb.png.aee8e5a347e733ee667a3951851d69cf.png

We're short of strikers, Bill Freeman, although back from playing for Liberia is too jet-lagged to play a full match, hopefully we won't need him at all, so Edvin Austbø needs to play up top alongside Henrique Araújo.

I can't fault the players tonight. They gave everything and were out-on-their-feet by the end. We just didn't get the breaks during the match.

It just felt like the odds were against us from the moment this Cupen-tie was scheduled during an international break.

02_Stromsgodset_10.png.9ad7391400c0134b67558ba2ddbc0130.png

We'll give the players we still have with us, who aren't away with their Nations, a week off and then we'll see where we are as the Best i vest derby against Brann isn't for 18 days.

02_Stromsgodset_09b.thumb.png.4b5f8678be860cef751b59ad1f191eb0.png

There was nothing in the game really and I thought we at least deserved to take Strømsgodset into extra-time.

We made the perfect start when Edvin Austbø gave us the lead after just 22 seconds, toe-poking the ball underneath Strømsgodset's goalkeeper Kike Moreno.

We took a risk starting Brede Norbye, after he'd only just got back from playing for Norway U21s, and he was out-on-his-feet after 35 minutes. We somehow got him through to half time and then replaced him with Eirik Bakk.

We scored early in the first half and Strømsgodset  scored early in the second half. Our young goalkeeper, Thomas Karlsen, stayed on his line instead of coming to collect a cross and Li Xiaowei headed home Strømsgodset's equaliser.

Øyvind Bekkevold picked up an injury in the 70th minute and had to come off. We took the opportunity to change to an Attacking mentality.

It was a game of few chances.

On 83 minutes, Li Xiaowei raced forward with the ball, Ove Benjamin Modell made a great sliding tackle on the edge of the penalty but the ball rolled to Melvin Schaafsma who, with Thomas Karlsen out of position, side-footed the ball into an empty net.

Benjamin Thoresen Faraas headed a deep cross into the side netting and Kasper Jakobsen had a powerful shot well saved by Kike Moreno.

I'm not going to blame Thomas Karlsen but, I think, if Hans Jørgen Solberg or Jasper Torkildsen had played in goal tonight we would've won this Cupen-tie.

Well... I wasn't expecting this...

--

I had a Zoom meeting scheduled with my agent. Hedda Berg, for tomorrow night, after Norway's final European Championship Group game against Wales, to discuss the Norway managerial vacancy if, as expected, Kjetil Knutsen steps down after the tournament.

agent_Hedda_Berg.png.9007302ae5dfe7c5e378a4a8f3811758.png

Obviously, we both hope Norway qualify from Group B, which would mean Kjetil Knutsen wouldn't step down tomorrow night, but the meeting is scheduled just in case Norway fail to qualify from the Group.

RE: What to do with the save - if you're enjoying it at Viking, why leave? As you've said before you're not the dominant club in the country (yet) and the Champions League is obviously another level of competition, so you have room to grow and heights yet to reach. However, with no international management in FM25, if the opportunity arises you really should take the Norway job. Once you have had your fill, you could stroll into Odd without the pressure of playing 'your' Viking side and the added benefit of the league being more 'level' due to no human involvement for 4/8/12 seasons.

Guess this decision is coming quicker than anticipated.

If you sign an extension I think the chances of you being offered Norway reduce. Even though it shouldn't affect international management, I feel like the AI may take this under consideration (not to mention any applications for other jobs may annoy your board after signing a new contract).

Considering everything, if I was in your shoes, I would reject the contract talks and take the Norway job. As it looks like you're already on course to retain the title, I'd be tempted to stay on and use the 'resign at end of season' option and leave on a high (halfway through the Champions League, of course). Downside of this though would obviously be juggling both jobs and any of the 'better' nations would not entertain their manager running a club at the same time as the country.

Catching-up With My Agent

--

Hedda Berg: Hi, Stuni. How are you?

Stuni Stuniverse: I'm good thanks, how are you?

Hedda Berg: I'm good too. Sorry about the Cupen result. That must've been tough.

Stuni Stuniverse: Yeah, it was a tough one to take. Playing Strømsgodset without eight or nine of our best players, more when you factor in the injured players, was harsh to say the least. I thought we did enough, but all of the bad luck that was going in that match came our way.

Hedda Berg:I know. I felt for you. But at least you've given my Vålerenga a chance to win Cupen this season.

Stuni Stuniverse: Well Mesay Dego is a good manager and Vålerenga have a better chance than most.

My_Contract_01.png.15378e52faf33c8da9b0058a854b76b9.png

Hedda Berg: So how do you feel about Viking wanting to offer you a new contract?

My_Contract_03b.thumb.png.d3722a80109e949e68c55e5acedd637b.png

Stuni Stuniverse: I'm flattered but, to be honest, I'm surprised as there's still 18 months left to run  on my current contract and there's a couple of things the new Chairperson, Thomas Ekren, and the Board aren't happy about.

Board_disappointment_01a.png.3be4393e24e1f3b8e4e52ba008f0f0db.png

Board_disappointment_02b.png.acfc4da3d33fbc559c8d8b397df63e70.png

Hedda Berg: My understanding is the Board are very pleased with you, they wouldn't be willing to offer you a new contract if they weren't.

Board_disappointment_03.png.4d04d7fd52dbafad829011d16da16181.png

Stuni Stuniverse: True. And I do get on with Thomas Ekren. Since Thomas took over, he and the Board have been very supportive, they've cleared the debts, allowed me to recruit another scout, and I'm very happy with the salary and transfer budgets.

But the timing's all wrong.

NOR_Knutsen_to_step_down_snipped.png.00babe5e6865b82c0eeb0cb3cbe07239.png

Hedda Berg: Norway?

Stuni Stuniverse: Yeah. Kjetil Knutsen is stepping down at the end of the European Championships and, whilst we all want Kjetil to take Norway to Final and win it, every match now could be his last.

NORvWAL_01b.png.0aa3af8add7dfcb66685b71afe27ef2a.png

Hopefully, Norway get a result against Wales tomorrow and qualify from the Group but, if they don't, that's it for Kjetil. And, if Norway qualify for the knockouts, every game then could also be his last.

Hedda Berg: Sounds like you're still very keen on managing Norway, then?

Stuni Stuniverse: Yes. It would be a dream come true. If Norway wanted me, I'd jump at the chance.

Hedda Berg: And, hypothetically, if you got the Norway job, would you step-down at Viking or juggle both jobs?

Stuni Stuniverse: I'm not sure. But, I have thought about it. If I was fortunate enough to be offered the Norway job, then next up is the Nations League so I thought I'd try managing both Norway and Viking until the end of the season, see how I got on, and then make a decision towards the end of December. I'm not sure I could give either Viking or Norway my best, if I'm juggling both jobs as you put it, then that wouldn't be fair to either Viking or Norway if I was unable to give everything, but the Norway job might turn out to be not for me. So, in an ideal world, I'd manage Viking and Norway for six months and then reassess.

Nations-League-GroupA-Norway-schedule.png.ff73910a4cd3565ca8c8962c20ed68a4.png

Hedda Berg: That sounds sensible enough to me...

Stuni Stuniverse: But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Kjetil Knutsen hasn't stepped down yet and, when he does, there's no guarantee that Norway will offer me the job.

Hedda Berg: Norway would be mad to turn you down. I can't think of any Norwegian with a better CV than yours.

Stuni Stuniverse: Thanks. But they might want a foreign manager, someone with more International and / or European Club Competition experience than me.

Hedda Berg: There you go, putting yourself down again. Stop it.

Stuni Stuniverse: So, if I was to extend my Viking contract now, how would that affect my chances of getting the Norway job?

Hedda Berg: I'm not sure, but the imminent Norway vacancy might be why Thomas Ekren wants to offer you a new contract right here, right now. I'm guessing, and I'm only guessing here, that the Board think that if you commit longer-term to Viking then that might make Norway think twice about your interest in the Norway job.

Stuni Stuniverse: So we should stall then?

Hedda Berg: I'm not sure. But, yes, I think so.

Stuni Stuniverse: OK. Let's stall then

Hedda Berg: Leave it with me.

Stuni Stuniverse: Thanks, Hedda.

Guess this decision is coming quicker than anticipated.

Well I wasn't expecting Viking to offer me a new contract with 18 months left on my current deal, that's for sure.

But I was expecting Kjetil Knutsen to step-down June / July (after the European Championships) to create a vacancy for the Norway job.

If you sign an extension I think the chances of you being offered Norway reduce. Even though it shouldn't affect international management, I feel like the AI may take this under consideration (not to mention any applications for other jobs may annoy your board after signing a new contract).

That's my thinking as well, @BML. I'm thinking that if I want the Norway job, and I do, then signing a new contract with Viking would be a bad move with the Norway vacancy imminent.

It looks like we're thinking along similar lines here as I discussed with my agent in the post above.

Disappointing My Chairperson

My agent, Hedda Berg, contacted me to say that she'd spoken to the Viking Chairperson, Thomas Ekren, about waiting before talking about a new contract but that Thomas was insisting on speaking to me face-to-face.

Question: @XaW @I have nothing to say (or anybody who knows): Who's in charge of football in Norway?

In England it would be the F.A. (Football Association) so I guess the question is what's Norway's equivalent of the English FA?

NFF (Norges FotballForbund) controls the national team and works pretty much the same as the English FA.

To be honest, with all the players we have unavailable because they're away on international duty at the European Championships, or injured, or lacking match fitness, we can't even fill our substitutes bench.

So I honestly don't know.

We will cobble together a team as best we can, we will try our hardest, and what will be will be.
