Stuniverse
Preview -- It's back to Eliteserien today after our Europa League adventure came to an end on Thursday night. If it wasn't for the fact that we have an international break after this match I may well have rested more players than I will do. It's time for one more big effort at home to Odds Ballklubb and then the players can have a rest. We'll watch the fitness levels during the match and if we need to manage tiredness then we can make substitutions as and when needed. -- Expected Line-up
Stuniverse
Sunday 17th March 2030 Viking (10th) v Odds Ballklubb (2nd) Eliteserien -- -- -- I'm delighted. After a very tough Europa League night, just three days ago, the players were shattered so for them to produce such an outstanding display today was a credit to them. We scored three and we had four, I think it was four I lost count, goals ruled out for offside by VAR. Yes. It meant we went in at half-time with the lead we deserved. We had a goal ruled out by VAR in the sixth minute and, whilst we were on top the whole half, we couldn't find a way past Kerim Alhas in their goal. Unfortunately he went off injured around the 44 minute mark and we took the lead four minutes into added on time. Per Kristian Bråtveit is a more than competent goalkeeper so I don't see the goal being down to Kerim's injury, more it was just reward for our first-half performance. Yeah. We'd had a further two goals chalked off by VAR so for Gaetano Oristanio to rifle in a free-kick from 30 yards was just what we needed as it left no room for VAR to chalk it off for offside. Gaetano's free-kick was worth the admission money alone, it was a sensational strike. --

Thanks, @Hootieleece For the Villarreal second leg I switched from the 4-4-2-diamond I've deployed successfully for the majority of my time at Viking... ... to a more attacking 4-2-2-2. Basically moving the player from the base of the diamond to a more advanced position making more of a midfield box than a diamond. I've used it in the odd game when we've needed a goal in the second-half but the Villarreal tie was the first time I'd started with it. I'm wondering if it's a system I should use more often, particularly at home against teams Viking should be beating? You'll notice I did revert back to the diamond for the Eliteserien match against Odds Ballklubb. -- 2 hours ago, Hootieleece said: Too bad about the European Adventure. Now is the time to get ready to dominate Norway again so you get another chance at European Nights. Thanks. We gave it our best shot but Villarreal were too good for us, particularly in the first leg in Spain. Now this is where it gets really confusing. That was our last season, 2029, as it's the 2029-30 season for teams not playing a calendar season. We are already in the UEFA Champions League League path for this season, 2030, 2030-31 for everyone else because we won Eliteserien last season. Where we are next season, our 2031 season, 2031-32 for everyone else, will depend on how well or not we do in Eliteserien this season. Stuniverse
Sunday 7th April 2030 Viking (3rd) v Sogndal (6th) Eliteserien -- -- -- We made hard work of this one but we got the win in the end and that's the most important thing. After having VAR disallow four of our goals in the last match, it made a pleasant surprise for VAR to overrule the referee and allow Edvin Austbø's goal. We added a second through Preslav Borukov on his return from injury. Sogndal then put us under some pressure in the last 20 minutes and pulled one back but we were able to hold on for a 2-1 victory. --

We had to b e patient and keep plugging away... until Preslav Borukov, on as a substitute, scored a stunning goal. Stuniverse
Sunday 28th April 2030 Viking (1st) v Aalesund (10th) Eliteserien -- -- -- We're delighted with the win particularly as we faced adversity early on. We lost Oscar Aga to a knee ligament injury in the very first minute. Then we thought we'd lost Gaetano Oristanio to an injury when their goalkeeper took him out. Fortunately Gaetano was ok. Edvin Austbø, who'd come on as a sub for Oscar, scored the penalty and went on to score another penalty, before completing his hat-trick, and hitting the bar. Stuniverse
Preview -- We had a bit of a scare this week with our goalkeeper Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson coming down with food poisoning but he's recovered well and is good to play. With Yorbe Vertessen and Oscar Aga both out injured, we're not taking any chances with Preslav Borukov who's recovering from a groin issue. Stuniverse
Sunday 5th May 2030 Åsane (14th) v Viking (1st) Eliteserien -- -- -- This was a bit of a weird game to be honest. Going forward we were flying. We scored four. We hit the post in the first half, had another after the break that hit the underside of the bar, bounced down onto the goal-line and out. How that didn't go in I have no idea. For an away performance in Eliteserien our attacking was top notch. Defensively though... what can I say? Overall we defended well, we limited Åsane to just four shots on target... but they scored three of them. What does that tell you? Please don't call it that. We like to attack, we like to play entertaining football, and it's working for the most part. On days like today though, it can leave us susceptible at the back. I'm gutted for Gaetano Oristanio as he's been playing well. Gaetano now joins a growing injury list of players who will be out for weeks rather than days. --

Stuniverse
Saturday 11th May 2030 Viking (1st) v Vålerenga (4th) Eliteserien -- -- -- Vålerenga are a very good team, so you can never be too confident, but I thought we played on the front foot from the very first whistle. When they kicked off, Otto Rosengren won possession in their half, fed Preslav Borukov in the penalty area for him to shoot beyond the goalkeeper... only for the goal to get ruled out, correctly I might add, for offside. Preslav Borukov did score after 15 minutes and we held that slender one goal lead until the break. Edvin Austbø made it 2-0 on 51 minutes and then, five minutes later, I think we saw what this Viking team are all about. We were awarded a penalty. Edvin Austbø had his spot-kick turned around the post by their goalkeeper. It was fine save by Ondřej Žák. Our heads didn't drop though, Lasse Berg Johnsen took the resulting corner, an inswinger into the six yard box, where Isak Amundsen rose highest in a crowded danger area to glance a header into the far corner for 3-0. Preslav Borukov scored his second and our fourth before Vålerenga got a late consolation from the penalty spot after an unfortunate hand ball. It was a great win and one we thoroughly deserved. -- -- Edited April 5 by Stuniverse

Stuniverse
Tromsø Appoint Simons -- Preview -- -- This is the second of two tough Eliteserien fixtures for us. We beat Vålerenga 4-1 in our own SR-Bank Arena but this away trip to the Intility Arena will be even tougher. Molde are 3rd, and hurting after losing 4-0 to Sogndal last time out, so Molde will be looking to bounce back with a win in front of their own supporters. We know we'll have our work cut out for us in this game but we're confident in our ability. Stuniverse
Thursday 16th May 2030 Molde (3rd) v Viking (1st) Eliteserien -- -- -- This was a thrilling, end-to-end game, that must have been a joy to watch for a neutral. I thought we did very well, for the most part, as we looked comfortable in defence and created the better chances, and I thought we deserved our 2-0 lead at half-time. Jakob Napoleon Romsaas's first goal was a screamer of a free-kick from all of 25-yards. His second, was more of a tap-in after their goalkeeper, Egil Selvik, spilled a cross under pressure from Preslav Borukov. I understand why Jon Dahl Tomasson was upset; if it had happened at the other end, I'd have been screaming for a foul on my goalkeeper as well. I don't think it was a foul by the way. The longer the second half went on, the more Molde threw everything they had at us. That was true of their first goal, when they threw everybody up, including Selvik, for a long-throw. We didn't deal with the long-throw properly and we allowed them to win a header in our box and pull one back. That may be one me, or it might be on my players, but first I think you have to give Jon Dahl Tomasson and his Molde team a lot of credit. Going into the last 10 minutes I did something I don't very often do. I switched to a Balanced mentality and went more defensive. It probably did invite pressure on us but, to be fair, Molde were putting us under a lot of pressure anyway and I thought, with this change, we'd be better equipped to deal with it. Turned out, we couldn't prevent Molde's equaliser one minute into added-on time. We changed back to our normal shape and style of play then, we did create one half-chance, but there wasn't enough time left in the match. At the end of the day, a draw away to third-placed Molde is a good result. We're just annoyed with ourselves that we couldn't manage the closing minutes better to hang onto our slender lead. --

Stuniverse
Preview -- -- I have a lot of time for Abel Stensrud. We took him on loan during my first full season at Hødd and he did very well. We wanted to sign him at the end of the season but he'd already agreed to join Lillestrøm. When I came to Viking it was a no-brainer to bring Abel here. It didn't quite work out for him here, as he had a lot of competition up front, but I still think he's a very good player and, given time, would've made it here. When the bid from Skeid came in during pre-season, I felt we owed it to him to let him go. At 27, Abel needs to be playing first team football and signing Preslav Borukov was going to push Abel even further down the pecking order. -- Edvin Austbø looked a bit tired in training this week so we'll rest him on the bench today. Skeid finished runners-up in OBOS-ligaen last season and were promoted to Eliteserien. They are finding it tough and currently sit second-bottom. We need to respect Skeid, but this is a game we should be winning at home. -- Expected Line-up Edited April 5 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Sunday 19th May 2030 Viking (1st) v Skeid (15th) Eliteserien -- -- -- We knew we would have to be patient today against Skeid. We knew they would get everybody back behind the ball and defend for their lives. And that's exactly what they did. Credit to Patrik Hansson, he has his Skeid team very well organised and they work so hard, I don't think I've seen a team of mine have so many shots blocked or charged down in the penalty area before. We broke them down though just before the break. Jonas Napoleon Romsaas hit the post and Preslav Borukov was there to toe poke the rebound over the line. At that point it's difficult for Skeid, they'd parked the bus very well, and made it difficult for us, but they'd offered very little going forward. Do they twist or do they stick? We were very comfortable in the second half, never really troubled, and doubled our lead through Runar Norheim. --
Stuniverse
Preview -- -- I wouldn't say that at all. Sarpsborg are 3rd in OBOS-ligaen and are pushing for an immediate return to Eliteserien. They've only lost once in their last 12 matches, yes they've probably drawn more than they would've liked, but I wouldn't say they were struggling for form. This squad are still hurting from the defeat to Fredrikstad in last season's Cupen Final and they want to put that right. So, no, I don't expect complacency to be an issue. I have a strong squad and football is a squad game these days. My players know and understand that. -- Lasse Berg Johnson and El Hadji Malick Diouf are suspended today after their red cards in last season's Cupen Final. Diouf wouldn't have played any way, as he has a sports hernia, but... Yes. Stuniverse
Wednesday 22nd May 2030 Viking (Tier 1) v Sarpsborg (Tier 2) Norgesmesterskapet i fotball (Cupen) First Round -- -- -- We used the squad and every player performed which, to be fair, is hard to do when you've not been getting as much playing time as you'd like and, suddenly, you get a start. Mind you, two goals in the opening 10 minutes helped to settle any nerves. Eivind Helland headed us into a third minute lead and he also hit the post in the second half. Preslav Borukov got a hat-trick and also hit the bar with a header. We were able to make changes at half-time to give some players a rest. Stuniverse
Preview Rosenborg are 8th but they have some very good players and we're expecting a difficult away match. Stuniverse
Monday 27th May 2030 Rosenborg (8th) v Viking (1st) Eliteserien -- -- -- Edvin Austbø was named in the provisional Norway World Cup squad but failed to make the final cut. I would have selected Edvin but Norway manager Antonio Conte didn't see it that way. Edvin is devastated at missing out so for him to produce a performance like that is credit to him. Sometimes it just isn't your day and today wasn't our day. Fair play to Mesay Dego and his Rosenborg team as they caught us out very early. They'd obviously worked on short corners, they took one early in the first half, Brice Wembangomo got beaten along the goal line and then, when the low cross came into the six yard box, Isak Amundsen went in for a hard tackle and the referee awarded a penalty. I thought it was harsh but VAR upheld the decision. Rosenborg scored. We were playing well, creating good chances, but couldn't take them. After half an hour, our captain, David Brekalo, missed an interception in our penalty area and bang, we were 2-0 down. Two individual errors, two goals conceded, and Rosenborg are too good a team to let a two-goal lead slip. We changed our shape and went to an Attacking mentality after the break but before we could settle into our stride, we lost concentration and we were three down. After that, we played much better. Edvin Austbø pulled a goal back, Runar Norheim reduced the deficit to just one goal. We had to chase the game going into the final 15 minutes and Rosenborg picked us off on a counter-attack to make it 4-2. We thought we were in for a frantic final few minutes when Yorbe Vertessen scored deep into added on time, the referee awarded the goal but, then, VAR overruled him and chalked it off. It was a good run of form, the players did brilliantly, and now we have to brush ourselves down and go again. -- -- Edited April 5 by Stuniverse
Stuniverse
Preview -- We have to take Bjarg seriously. They may be Tier 4 but in the First Round they drew 1-1 with Eliteserien Kristiansund here at Stavollen Idrettsplass after 90 minutes and extra-time and then won the penalty shootout. If we underestimate Bjarg, which we won't, we could be the victims of another Giant Killing. Lasse Berg Johnsen is still suspended after his sending off in the Cupen Final. I don't mean to disrespect Norgesmesterskapet i fotball (Cupen), or Bjarg, but I will be making plenty of changes for this Cupen-tie.
