Stuniverse
Preview - Lazio (away) UEFA Europa League League Path -- -- We've started our UEFA Europa League League Path campaign very well with three wins, a draw and one defeat from our first five matches. Now we travel to Rome to play Lazio in the Stadio Olimpico. Jesper Robertsen (shin) felt some discomfort during training this week, but he should be ok. Henrik Skogvold (fractured arm) and Krzysztof Krysiak (ankle) have both passed fitness tests. -- Extended Line-up Ove Benjamin Modell misses the Lazio match as he's suspended. Stuniverse
Thursday 8th December 2033 Lazio (Italy) v Viking (Norway) UEFA Europa League League Path -- -- -- It's been a long, hard season that started with UEFA Champions League League Path matches in mid-January and has ended tonight, 8th of December, with a UEFA Europa League League Path match against Lazio. But you'd never have known that from the work rate my players put in. Two late goals make it look like a smash 'n' grab raid but, in fairness, I think we thoroughly deserved it. After weathering an early Lazio onslaught, we created more chances than Lazio and better chances at that. We had to wait until the 90th minute for our first goal. We won a corner, from it there was some head tennis going on in Lazio's penalty area, Rafael Mota laid the ball back and Henrik Skogvold smashed it, first time, through a crowd of players and in off the underside of the bar. Two minutes later, a good passing move ended with Hugo Vetlesen striking a 20-yard shot that flew into the bottom corner. I'll be honest, before the game I'd have taken a draw, snapped your hand off for a draw, so to fly out to Rome, play in the Stadio Olimpico, and beat Lazio 2-0, well... I'm so proud of the players. We'll give the players as much time off as we can before preparing for our next UEFA Europa League League Path match at home to ZTE in January. -- --

The players play from January through to December… and then the Board give them nine day’s off to recover, asking them to return before Christmas. At least this Chairperson / Board don’t make them fly out for a training camp a couple of days before New Year, like the previous Chairperson did, which means I can at least give them Christmas and New Year off.
Stuniverse
Saturday 17th December 2033 Rosengren Wants a New Challenge -- -- Otto Rosengren joined Viking in 2025 and has been a fantastic servant to Viking Fotballklubb. Spoiler I'll be honest, when I came here in 2028, I couldn't find room for Otto Rosengren and loaned him out for the season as no club was interested in buying him at our valuation. He did very well at Vålerenga on loan so, in pre-season ahead of the 2029 season, I gave Otto a chance and he's been a key player for us ever since. Last season, with the switch to 4231, from 442 diamond, there was one or two less central midfielders in the starting 11, depending on how you interpret it, and so, whilst Otto still got a reasonable amount of playing time, it was difficult to accommodate him. With Mamady Diambou set to join us from Brann, and a couple of our younger midfielders looking like they might be ready to make the step-up to our first team squad, I'm not going to stand in Otto's way, as long as we get satisfactory bids at the lower end of our valuation. -- Discussion with Otto Rosengren and His Agent - - -- -- A Chat with Otto Rosengren's Agent -- Transfer Listed and Offered Out It might not be that easy to sell Otto Rosengren due to his wage demands... but we'll see. If Otto's as keen to find a new challenge as he says he is then, should we accept any bids, it's up to Otto then to agree personal terms... Stuniverse
Monday 19th December 2033 Players Report Back for Pre-Season -- Fitness and Injury Reports -- Loan Returnees We thought it was important to ask all the players who were out on loan last season to report back today for medical and fitness checks. Per Joar Hægstad Johnsen had a good loan spell with Sandnes Ulf and performed magnificently in Sandnes Ulf's 1-0 victory over Jerv in the Eliteserien / OBOS-ligaen Playoff Final. I'm looking forward to seeing first hand how much he's improved when we start pre-season in January. - Roger Vestgøte may not have been happy with his loan at Bjarg (Tier 3) but we were as he gained valuable first team playing time as Bjarg's #1 goalkeeper. Stuniverse
Monday 19th December 2033 Merry Christmas, Happy New Year... ... See You in January -- The Board may have only wanted to give the players nine days off at the end of last season but I didn't think that was fair. So I've wished the squad a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and given them another two weeks off. We'll then prepare for our last two games in the Europa League League Path. As we've guaranteed ourselves a Europa League Playoff spot already, and ZTE and Olimpija occupy the bottom two places in the League Path, we're not going to arrange any friendly matches ahead of those two Europa League games. We'll wait and see what our schedule looks like, once we know whether we've qualified automatically for the Europa League Knockout Phase or are in the Playoffs, before we arrange any friendly matches. Stuniverse
Tuesday 20th December 2033 Tactics -- The players may have broken up for Christmas and the New Year, but my First Team Coaching Staff and I still have a lot of work to do ahead of the players proper return for Pre-Season in early January. -- 4-2-3-1 We ditched our 442 diamond system and switched to the 4231 towards the end of June last season and that seemed to suit the players better and our performances and results certainly improved. So we see that being our Primary Trained Tactic, at least for now, with a wide target man on the left when Lasse Nordås plays there or an inverted winger if its somebody else there. We are going to adapt it slightly though as we feel we didn't make enough use of the extra width this 4231 system offers us. In Possession we want to Focus Play Down The Left and The Right. In Transition we want to Distribute To Full-Backs as well as Centre-Backs. -- 4-2-2wide-2 In quite a few games, though, we conceded the first goal and ended up having to chase the game and / or go more Attacking, often with a great deal of success. So we are seriously considering starting more matches as we finished those games where we were chasing, and going with more of a 422wide2 type system. Our two remaining UEFA Europa League League Path matches against ZTE and Olimpija may give us the perfect opportunity to try out the 422wide2 system competitively. I say may because we haven't decided yet. -- 4-4-2 diamond And we're still training the 442 diamond system, with a Regista at the base of the diamond, in case we need to go back to it ( @Hootieleece, I think you suggested the Regista ]. But, frankly, I think we're done with the diamond... but we haven't decided yet what our third system to train should be. Stuniverse
Monday 9th January 2034 Two In and One Out -- -- Mamady Diambou Spoiler When Brann beat us 2-0 at the end of October, Mamady Diambou not only scored against us, but was the best player on the pitch. We'd been monitoring Mamady but that performance convinced us to move forward and try to get a deal done. Defensive Midfield is a key position in our 4231 where we use to screen the back four so that our more creative players can do their stuff. Jonas Therkelsen has gone to Football Club København creating room to bring Mamady Diambou in but this is something we'll need to keep an eye on. -- Peter Vesterbekkmo Spoiler We'll need to be patient with Peter Vesterbekkmo. Stuniverse
Friday 13th January 2034 Homegrown Club [HGC] Players -- Ahead of the initial squad registration for Eliteserien 2034 (which happens very early in January given the Eliteserien campaign doesn't kick off until March), I wanted to check the HGC eligibility of players with a HGC icon as some of them haven't been registering / eligible in previous seasons and I haven't been able to work out why. Fortunately, this season, I have 22 players with a HGC logo (a lot of them younger players with potential who won't actually be registered) and ALL of them count towards the "Minimum of 2 players trained by Viking for 3 years (regardless of their loa spells away from the club) between 0th and 21st birthdays" criteria. Stuniverse
Preview - Zalaegerszegi TE (home) UEFA Europa League League Path -- -- We host ZTE of Hungary in the UEFA Europa League knowing that we are only out of the automatic qualification places on goal difference. ZTE are currently 34th in the League Path with two draws and four defeats from their six matches. We won't be under-estimating ZTE but this is a good opportunity for us to move into the top eight. Aleksander Liland is suspended for this one. We also have quite a few pre-season niggly injuries and fitness issues to juggle. -- Expected Line-up We've been working on a 4-2-2wide-2 type system in pre-season training and we're going to give it a go against ZTE today. Stuniverse
Thursday 19th January 2034 Viking (Norway) v Zalaegerszegi TE (Hungary) UEFA Europa League League Path -- -- That will be the problem if we stick with the 422wide2 system in that we have a lot of good central midfielders, but can only use two in this system which means good players like Hugo Vetlesen will miss out. -- -- Lasse Nordås didn't get on the score sheet today, although the goalkeeper made a couple of good saves to deny him, but Lasse worked hard for the team. I congratulated him after the game but he told me he thought he'd played better in other games. Anders Hartveit Ryste hit the post after four minutes. Henrik Skogvold gave us an early lead, following up after the ZTE goalkeeper parried a shot from Lasse Nordås. 1-0 at half-time. Four minutes into the second-half, ZTE rattled our cross bar from distance. Anders Hartveit Ryste made it 2-0 just before the half hour mark, racing through, one-on-one with the goalkeeper, he scored with confidence. I thought we looked good playing this way but ZTE did put us under some pressure in the last 20 minutes, without really looking like scoring. On 71 minutes, Tinius Sundell tripped a ZTE player in our penalty area. It looked harsh but VAR upheld the referee's on-field decision and ZTE scored from the spot. In future matches, when we have the lead but the opposition start to chase the game, if we're playing this new system, we may need to revert back to our 4231 system. We've put ourselves in a great position now where we know that a win against Olimpija at our SR-Bank Arena in our last Europa League Path game will see us qualify automatically for the knockout stages. I thought the whole team played well but, yes, Mamady Diambou more than contributed to this win on his debut. I was very pleased with Mamady today. --

Stuniverse
Thursday 26th January 2034 Viking (Norway) v Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia) UEFA Europa League League Path -- -- -- We played very well tonight and comfortably beat Olimpija Ljubljana 5-2. We're thrilled to have finished 5th in the Europa League League Path and qualify for the knockout rounds automatically. Anders Hartveit Ryste scored a great hat-trick today, or at least he should've done but his third goal was officially credited as an own goal following a deflection off Marko Ristić. Last season Anders was troubled by injury but, this season, he already has three goals from two Europa League matches. Lasse Nordås and Rafael Mota scored our other two goals. Leading 3-1, on 63 minutes we switched to a 4231 system. I'm delighted with our five goals and the 30 chances we created. At the other end, we defended very well but I'm less happy that Olimpija Ljubljana only had two shots but scored from each one. --

Stuni Stuniverse: That's a bit harsh on Øystein Sanden, don't you think? Hedda Berg: No. Øystein's the caretaker manager and I'm not sure he wants the job permanently.
