Ørn Horten got promoted last season as Champions of Norsk Tipping-ligaen Avdeling 5 (Tier 4) and find themselves 9th in PostNord-ligaen Avdeling 1 (Tier 3) this season.

We're confident of going to Lystlunden and getting a result but Ørn Horten won't make it easy for us.

Henrik Skogvold is only just back from a twisted knee so we won't be taking any chances, not now Edvin Austbø has suffered a hamstring injury in training.

That's a bit harsh to level the injury to Lorents Apold-Aasen on the way we play when Daniel Daga picked up a 16th minute injury...

01_OrnHorten_12_16mins_injury.png.630ebafc0c0fd037fea6d1155d0f19ef.png

... and Ola Johannes Kleppa Christensen picked up a 38th minute injury...

01_OrnHorten_12_38amins_injury.png.19185b6c155d41d4a5c9e79d9e72e05b.png

... and we had to substitute them both on 39 minutes.

I'm very pleased. Kasper Jakobsen scored a brilliant individual goal, Julian Gonstad scored a hat-trick and Anders Hartveit Ryste bagged two.

And at 0-0, Aleksander Liland hit the post with an 8th minute free-kick.

KIL/Hemne are 4th in Norsk Tipping-ligaen Avdeling 4 (Tier 4) and are on a five match unbeaten run.

We know KIL/Hemne will be fired up for this Cupen game in front of their own supporters in Hemne Sparebank Arena and we need to match their commitment and work rate and, if we do that, we're confident of getting a result.

We're without Costel Tilincă and Daniel Daga who are both away on international duty.

We have quite a long injury list, but Henrik Skogvold is on the bench in case we need him.

Expected Line-up

With so many players unavailable for one reason or another, we've named three youngsters on the bench in case there's an opportunity to give them first team playing time.

It was great for Miroslav Marchev to score his first goal for Viking today.

KIL/Hemne made it very difficult for us today, as we knew they would. I think we would have won any way, without Jarl-Emil Nesland's red card for sliding two-footed through the back of Jesper Robertsen, but it certainly helped.

2-0 up through goals from Tinius Sundell and Miroslav Marchev, KIL/Hemne pulled one back with a shot that took a wicked deflection past Hans Jørgen Solberg.

Joakim Berg Nundal made it 3-1 from the penalty spot and we looked in complete control.

With 20 minutes to go, I subbed on the three youngsters.

02_KIL-Hemne_12_68mins.png.e84bf07c63bc401ec5491318bb953a13.png

Fillip Lauritzen was denied by a fine 72nd minute save from Isak Aron Sjong.

Morten Synnes hit an 85th minute shot straight at KIL/Hemne's goalkeeper.

Biniyam Teklab did a good job in central midfield.

But on 89 minutes, KIL/Hemne reduced our lead to 3-2 with a fierce, long-range shot.

Miroslav Marchev headed a 90+3rd minute corner against the far post.

Henrik Skogvold then calmed our nerves heading in a 90+4th minute corner for 4-2.

I signed Hans Jørgen Solberg in April 2033 with the intention of him challenging Jasper Torkildsen for the goalkeeper gloves.

Solberg_saga_03_Solberg.thumb.png.657d6a13b1e805d827c502e160713440.png

But, up to this point, Hans Jørgen Solberg hasn't done enough for me to convince me he should be #1 ahead of my vice-captain Jasper Torkildsen. Although, to be fair, there’s not much between the two of them.

Being honest, I bought Hans Jørgen Solberg in April 2033 with the intention of him one day taking over from Jasper Torkildsen as my #1 goalkeeper.

Hans Jørgen Solberg is younger than Jasper Torkildsen, has more potential than Jasper Torkildsen, so is that one day now?

Is it time to change my #1 goalkeeper?

True, but you're paying the youngster nearly 3 times the salary so I'd say you need to play him or sell him.

Me, I'd play him - the more he plays the better he'll get, and sooner.

GKs are tricky... every year in my Darlington save I've brought in a backup who very quickly turns out to be better than the first-choice option. Then we have to have the "you're not as good as you think" conversation :D

Just got caught after about a month and half. Last season was massive disappointment but have to give you and the boys credit for clawing back to 3rd, winning the Cup and putting up a good showing in Europe. It seems this season is going much more according to plan.

I'd agree with above, with the amount you're paying him and the slightly better attributes I'd be playing the younger of the two.

Thank you. Last season, or at least the first part of last season, was horrible. At it's worst, we were 13th, albeit with a game-in-hand.

I spent most of last season expecting to get sacked at some point... or at the end of the season. The Board's Expectation was top four finish but it was only in the last few games that we secured that and to finish 3rd was a bonus after everything else that had gone on.

I was delighted to win Cupen... whether lifting the Norgesmesterskapet i fotball (Cupen) Trophy would have been enough to save my job if we'd finished 5th... fortunately, it never came to that.

So far so good, yes. Primarily with the same squad of players...

424_plus-signings.png.3a6e9f1865b332db010c9de1d5bf6ee3.png

... although I have added a couple of ball-winning midfielders and three back-up wingers which will are really helping with the 424 system we're playing this season.

I received this by DM on here (and you know who you are ):

"Your goalkeeper dilemma is a bit of a head scratcher isn’t it, I went to comment but couldn’t decide which I’d pick. But I was thinking that Solberg has a larger sell on value and would also save you a lot more in wages each week, but in terms of goalkeeping there isn’t much separating them attribute wise or match stats, both conceded 7 in either 7 and 8 games! Only question is has one player more against the better sides than the other?? Obviously if one is playing the lower teams and still letting in 7 then maybe some question marks are hanging over his head, but I also suppose that would also be down to what’s in front of him (I’ve played in goal and always blamed my defence 😂😂)"

--

Here's this season's form for both goalkeepers:

Jasper Torkildsen, current #1:

saga_Solberg_Torkildsen-form_01.thumb.png.79414231dfd508f77294ec3aea4ef653.png

saga_Solberg_Torkildsen-form_02.thumb.png.cd6205d70e452b8aeb4a5df591b33633.png

Hans Jørgen Solberg, current #2:

--

So, again, not too much in it.

As #1, Jasper Torkildsen has played the majority of the Eliteserien matches and played both legs against FC Utrecht in Europe.

Hans Jørgen Solberg has played the Norgesmesterskapet i fotball (Cupen) ties and some Eliteserien matches, including Vålerenga away.

Yeah... play him or sell him is kind of where I'm at with Hans Jørgen Solberg as well, @warlock

I know @PunchHans Jørgen Solberg is injury prone and Jasper Torkildsen doesn't like big matches although, to be fair, so far I've not seen much evidence of either.

3 hours ago, Blarney said:

I'd play the youngster myself.  Not much between them and the potential is there to get better.

Thanks, @Blarney... I guess Hans Jørgen Solberg isn't going to reach his potential if I keep playing Jasper Torkildsen ahead of him.

1 hour ago, BML said:

Thank you, @BML and, in fairness, I did sign Hans Jørgen Solberg with the hope that he'd challenge Jasper Torkildsen for the gloves and become Viking's long-term #1 goalkeeper.

So I guess Hans Jørgen Solberg is now challenging for the gloves and it may be time to see if he can take them and become Viking's #1 goalkeeper.

That's very much how I see this season, @Hootieleece.

Our bank balance is down from £40M at it's height to just over £3M but if we can make it into the UEFA Champions League League Path next season the money will come rolling in again...

In the meantime, having pushed the boat out somewhat on salaries for some of our new signings, including Hans Jørgen Solberg, I'm hoping we can get through this season without having to sell any of them just to reduce the wage bill. We are, after all, well within the Wage Budget the Viking Board have set.

Yes, fortunately for us, unfortunately for Costel Tilincă, Romania didn't make it out of their World Cup Group so Costel is back with us, as is Daniel Daga after Nigeria were eliminated in the Group Stage.

They will both be on the bench today.

Yes... but I thought all three penalties were correctly awarded.

Anders Hartveit Ryste picked himself up sfter being tripped in the penalty area to break the deadlock with a hard and low spot-kick to the goalkeeper's right and into the bottom corner.

Five minutes later, Anders Hartveit Ryste put his second penalty in exactly the same spot after Mathias Fjørtoft Løvik had been tripped.

On 22 minutes, Anders Hartveit Ryste had the chance for a hat-trick but, this time, his penalty was well saved by Kristinn Magnús Helgason.

03_Mosjoen_10b.thumb.png.26b9019ea9693afd8dbe2621089c5239.png

An early goal is always important but I thought we were in total control against Mosjøen from first whistle to last.

Oscar Bobb hit the bar after 25 minutes.

And a minute later, Oscar Bobb picked up an injury.

03_Mosjoen_12_26mins_a.png.50b3be125f3b44a96bdb92add1ca65bf.png

We brought young Morten Synnes on for Oscar Bobb.

03_Mosjoen_12_26mins_b.png.7e2d5b759af65441f53fbde5b8be7506.png

Aleksander Liland hit the post from a direct free-kick after half an hour.

Joakim Berg Nundal hit the bar with a long-range shot on 41 minutes, but Morten Synnes got to the rebound first, crossed to the far post where Julian Gonstad was waiting to head home our third goal.

After the break, Julian Gonstad scored two more for his hat-trick.

A great save by Kristinn Magnús Helgason denied Anders Hartveit Ryste his hat-trick.

Mosjøen never gave up and scored a late consolation goal.

Hugo Vetlesen is a very good player but, following our change from the 442 diamond and 4231 systems, to 424, it was getting difficult to find a place for Hugo in the matchday squad.

Hugo wasn't happy about it and we wanted to find a resolution that worked for all parties.

We believe this is it.

OUT_Vetlesen_press_04.thumb.png.66e3fb44e400f83543494258a04f1c2c.png

We have a great squad of players here who all get on but are professional about the job in hand.

I don't anticipate any problems.

Four of those have been draws but, yes, we are long overdue a win against Molde.

Maybe today is the day.

With Molde 2nd, three points behind us from a game more, today would be a wonderful day to go to the Aker Stadion and win.

Here's hoping we can.

01_Molde_02d.thumb.png.cfe79faaa7d2853cc7448b7767752c3a.png

We use two ball-winning midfielders to protect the back four in our 424 system so, I guess, it comes with the territory.

Anders Hartveit Ryste had a great game today but so did all of my players.

When everybody's having a good game, and we can find space down the wings to do what we do best, get players into the penalty area to get on the end of crosses, and put our chances away then Viking are a pleasure to manage and, hopefully, for our supporters to watch.

01_Molde_10b.thumb.png.3a94ae1a175d1f0e3cb5ea84e9135207.png

Molde were 2nd, so to come to their Aker Stadoin and go home with a comprehensive 4-1 victory, it's beyond our wildest dreams.

Early on, Anders Hartveit Ryste did brilliantly down the left channel, crossed the ball to the near post, where Edvin Austbø got the better of Franco Carboni and scored.

From a free-kick, a looping Molde header grazed our bar and went over on 34 minutes.

Just before half-time, Mathias Fjørtoft Løvik took a throw-in, received the ball back from Mamady Diambou, crossed from the left wing to the far post where Julian Gonstad powered a header in off the underside of the bar.

2-0 up at the break, we substituted Ove Benjamin Modell and Mamady Diambou who were both on yellow cards.

Approaching the hour mark, Edvin Austbø and Anders Hartveit Ryste combined superbly down the right wing, Anders crossed low into the six yard box, Julian Gonstad couldn't reach the ball but Henrik Skogvold was there at the far post to side-foot our third goal.

Four minutes later, Edvin Austbø made it 4-0 with a shot into the top corner after good work in the build-up by Jesper Robertsen.

From an 81st minute Molde corner, they flicked on a near post header and we somehow left Denis Munguía unmarked at the far post for a tap in.

Anders Hartveit Ryste had a goal ruled out for offside late on.

Julian Gonstad then had an even later goal disallowed for offside.

It's simple, really, if the opposition don't have the ball then they can't score.

01_Molde_10d.thumb.png.6bf41387fffc8d4ddc20ed2d4dd84742.png

I used to say that was too simplistic but, after last season, I no longer think that as injuries to key players, particularly in the early part of the last campaign, definitely contributed to our poor Eliteserien form in 2033.

This season, I think we have more strength in depth across the squad and we're better able to cope with a long injury list which, to be fair, we have had to deal with again this season.

01_Molde_10e.thumb.png.f8e8823aed45278c00d7d9b8b42c0c10.png

We've just won 4-1 in Molde's Aker Stadion and Hans Jørgen Solberg only had three shots to save all game so, yes, we're top after 13 games so we definitely have a chance to win the the Eliteserien title.

The season has gone very well thus far but it's up to the players now to keep it going.

01_Molde_10f.thumb.png.f8967caa1906b4d03805cccc8c4c6561.png

We're always looking to improve the squad but I'm very happy with the players we've got at the SR-Bank Arena right now.

01_Molde_10g.png.dbbc258bbb0f61e5f34badc6924e2976.png

Bill Freeman will join us on a free from Benfica later this month but that's about all we have in the pipeline.

We do have a very good record against Bodø/Glimt during my time here at Viking.

But that won't mean anything today. Bodø/Glimt are a very good team, second in the Eliteserien Form table behind us, and Thomas Thomasberg will have them fired up for this one.

We've won six out of six at home this season and hopefully we can make that seven against Bodø/Glimt today.

Our de mørkeblå  supporters are amazing, they really lift the team in our SR-Bank Arena and, after last season, we feel we owe them something this year.

Yes, of course, the Best i vest derby against Brann in Cupen Quarter Final is a massive game for us, the Fotballklubb, and our supporters but that's not important today.

Today we are 100% focussed on Eliteserien and our match against Bodø/Glimt.

RECALL_Haegstad-Johnsen_01.png.a71ef2d206ed2d74c297ec132be71456.png

I'm giving you a heads-up that we've recalled Per Joar Hægstad Johnsen from his loan spell at Brann and he'll be on the bench.

Neither Miroslav Marchev or Rafael Mota will be in the matchday squad. Before you ask, neither of them are injured but I'm not prepared to say any more on that right now.

Spoiler

Niklas Ødegård and Oscar Bobb are still out.

Lasse Nordås could, possibly, give us 45 minutes if we need him.

At the moment, the players are on the top of their game and our game-plan is working to perfection.

Julian Gonstad gave us an 11th minute lead, even though it needed VAR to overrule the on-field official's original offside decision, and Mathias Fjørtoft Løvik wrapped it up at 2-0 on 78 minutes.

In truth though, I think we controlled the game throughout and deserved this victory over Bodø/Glimt.

02_Bodo_10c.thumb.png.7e6c0adbdeb21919bf653bdd726a19f9.png

Things were starting to get a bit tense at 1-0 so when Mathias Fjørtoft Løvik ran into the penalty area, received a pass, and hit the ball across the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, you could sense the relief all around our SR-Bank Arena.

Bodø/Glimt came into this game second in the Eliteserien form table behind us and we restircted them to only two attempts all game and none on target. I think that tells you just how dominant we were today.

Sander Tangvik had a brilliant game in Bodø/Glimt's goal.

On 75 minutes, Kasper Jakobsen's shot was tipped onto the bar by Sander Tangvik.

Then he turned Per Joar Hægstad Johnsen's 81st minute header against the post.

And Sander Tangvik also pushed Mamady Diambou's shot out for a corner.

02_Bodo_12a_92mins.png.98db776a53573a1f392dea41d6c4037a.png

On 90+2 minutes though we suffered a real disappointment when Julian Gonstad picked up an injury and we had to take him off, leaving us with only 10-players as we'd used all our substitutes.

02_Bodo_12b_92mins.png.403429a44319b5b189fd9be8111de15b.png

So we went defensive and comfortably saw out the last two or three minutes.

02_Bodo_10b.thumb.png.52b7730cafe708d9af4baa78c1df8750.png

We're playing very well right now and everybody is enjoying their football.

This wasn't an easy decision to make, as Miroslav Marchev is a current Bulgarian international and a very good player, but it's a sign of the strength of our squad that Miroslav wasn't a regular starter for us and £17K per week was just too much, in our current financial circumstances, to be paying out for a squad / fringe player.

Keeping quality backups for squad depth often becomes a problem for teams dominating their domestic leagues on a shoestring budget like Viking. At least you sold Marchev for more than you paid for him.

We really want to win this Best i vest derby against Brann in Cupen Quarter Final and progress to the Semi Final for our supporters and ourselves.

We beat Brann 1-0 in our SR-Bank Arena earlier this season but that was before Andreas Alm took charge of Brann.

Generally though, in my time at Viking, we've had the better of the Best i vest derby.

This is the Best i vest derby so we know Brann will be fired up for this one.

We've won our last 10 in all competitions, and are unbeaten in our last 14, so we go into this Cupen Quarter Final in confident move.

I'm very happy with the make-up of the Viking squad right now so, short of losing any of our key players, I'm not expecting to be paying out any transfer fees on new players.

03_Brann_03_injuries.thumb.png.9e9ddd1ec9ff6ad7a0dfafb3aedbdd4b.png

We still have a few injury and fitness issues, but we're delighted to welcome Lasse Nordås back after he recovered from his torn hamstring.

Exactly that, @Hootieleece.

When I signed Miroslav Marchev, I knew I was paying him a high salary of £17K per week, making him Viking's highest paid player there or thereabouts, but I fully expected him to be a regular starter in central defence plus covering as one of the ball-winning midfielders.

Hootieleece.png.ca10f77e960667a434159b76a2a701d6.png

But the form of Aleksander Liland and Ove Benjamin Modell (both Norwegian) meant he couldn't break that partnership and the signings of Mamady Diambou and Daniel Daga, two specialist ball-winning midfielders, left him well down the pecking order there.

£17K per week was simply too much to pay a squad / fringe player.

We're delighted to have reached Cupen Semi Final and to do it in a Best i vest derby against Brann, in such comfortable style, is a great feeling.

We didn't give Brann chance to settle. After 33 seconds, Edvin Austbø seized on a mistake by Daishawn van der Kust, fed the ball through into the penalty area for Anders Hartveit Ryste to drill his shot past Brann's goalkeeper.

Daniel Daga made it 2-0.

Lasse Nordås scored our 3rd after Tinius Sundell had hit the post in the build up.

Joakim Berg Nundal also hit the post before later scoring our fourth goal.

We limited Brann to only two attempts and only one tested Jasper Torkildsen.

4-0 against Brann, in a Best i vest derby is about as good as it gets.

03_Brann_10b.thumb.png.e8b9590f7b3b6d2beefaf75598aa18ad.png

We won Norgesmesterskapet i fotball (Cupen) last season and also in 2028. We know what it takes to win this trophy and we'd love to win it again this season.

03_Brann_10c.thumb.png.0f85b6f1c6926550b23ccf8fcc5b3bb2.png

We've had bids for Tinius Sundell and we've rejected them all as we have no intention of selling our best players.

Tinius has been completely professional and has just got on with playing football for Viking Fotballklubb.
