Windows Defender and add the UBlock Origin extension to your web browser. You don't really need more than that these days as it'll catch the most common nasty things between them. If for whatever reason something does get through, the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is great for removing things. McAfee, Norton, Symantec etc are dinosaur products that are barely fit for purpose these days and you're wasting your money buying them. The security industry is slowly moving away from the traditional anti-virus style products.

Is your OS Windows 10 or 11? Windows Defender does the job. You don't need an external one.

Agreed. Not used an antivirus for 8 years or so and have no issues. I used malware bytes to run a scan once a month but that's it.

Anti virus software is bloated and outdated now

Good luck to all of you who choose to use basic or no protection and I hope you are never hit with ransomware or other nasties, it must be like playing Russian roulette.

Yeah, we trust the people we sleep with. That's the best protection.

Or maybe some of us have years of experience in IT and InfoSec and know where the main source of threats are, what's appropriate to protect against them and how the industry is currently working :)

Weird. I have Norton 360 running and there is no issue for me.

All that does is confuse me. In all my years in IT, if I suggested leaving just Windows Defender running on our machines, not only would I have been laughed at, but probably sacked.

W Defender is good basic protection but still falls short in some departments, like  phishing and DNS filtering, if you are not using other MS products.

I use Avast Free Antivirus - i have not enountered any trouble in games since i use it.

Norton is known of being very troublesome - get rid of it if you game!

I dont know of if McAfee is still a thing, that is also a very troublesome piece of problems - do not use it if you game!

Also no Kaspersky!

Corporate environment is very different though, you wouldn't be running the consumer version of Defender in there because you need greater defence in depth, a higher efficacy rate and something that can be deployed and managed remotely at scale. Go back a few years and I agree, Defender was a joke but it's got a lot better. It's far from perfect but it does decent enough job these days. The average person for home use doesn't need anything too complex, the three main problems are phishing, downloading infected files and drive-by downloads from ads. The consumer version of Defender, an ad-blocker and the built-in capabilities in Edge/Chrome/Outlook protect you from a significant portion of those things. The main focus of threat actors against home users is for data and account access because they're less likely to get a decent payoff from ransomware compared to targeting a business. It doesn't hurt to add more layers to your defences of course but for a lot of people it's overkill.

For corporate networks sure.

If OP is talking about a home PC, then all you need is window defender and some common sense. Also, Firefox and ublock origin is a must for me as well.

I respect your opinions, I guess I am a better safe than sorry kind of a guy.

Unless you visit dodgy websites like porn, torrent etc. there's no way you can get infected with malware, trojan horse, virus etc. from regular popular websites. Keep it safe kid. Use privacy extensions with Firefox, Windows Defender and common sense, and all will be okay.

If you want to watch porn have a secondary machine, don't use your primary one.

With respect Arijit, that is not true, and I am not a kid, I could probably be your Grandfather 3 times over and have forgotten more about web security than you currently know ... probably :onmehead:

I voiced an opinion that's all.

DaanMaan my advice to you is try other free AV's and see what happens, if you feel comfortable with the advice given by others re defender then so be it, it's your choice. :kriss: love and peace everyone

Other than windows defender what else is a good choice people ?

I was on a Mac for a long time and then moved back to Windows a few years ago. I was still pretty paranoid so I bought Bitdefender. I have a pretty powerful machine and I've never noticed it cause me any issue with anything I do on this computer. I can sit here with FM24 (all leagues playable), A youtube video playing 4K on a second monitor and Photoshop open all at the same time. With Bitdefender doing what ever it does in the background.

All that being said I was also of the opinion that Windows built in security is much better than it ever was, but hey, it's still Windows...... So I just thought it can't hurt to be safe....
