Originally I was using a AM (S) and it did possibly work better, was trialling the AP (S) & AP (A). The link up play between the front two was pretty good, both are two of my best players really. I found an attack role for the AM made it harder for them to link with the two DMs and you can get roasted.
Currently working on an update in my second season that involves the offsetting of the AM/ST which I was originally against as it limited flexibility in movement, but should hopefully stop the two players getting in each other's way, which is compounded by the narrow shape.

This is what I've been working with and it seems to do a decent job of emulating how they play, not sure how effective it is in game but we managed to finish 2nd behind PSG in Ligue 1.
WB: Sit Narrower, Shoot Less Often
CB: Dribble Less
DM & VOL: Dribble Less, Tackle Harder, Mark Tighter
IW: Take More Risks, Stay Wider
AP: Move into Channels
If you have good 'wrong' footed wide players with the 'cut insides' trait then you can try them as Wingers.

Currently trying to implement a de Zerbi approach to my Rennes team but it's proving to be pretty challenging. If it goes well I'll post the process on here. Key points to me seem to be:
- Possession derived from playing out from the back in numbers - Play out of Defence/Short passing mandatory, distributing to CBs and FBs as well
- Wide players holding width and attacking space aggressively - IW/W on A with 'stay wider'
- Double pivot to drop deep in build up but also engage in attacks - two in DM strata on a support role
- Wing-backs versatile in staying inside in build up, and sometimes going on overlap but occasionally under-lapping.
- Offsetting the AM/ST? Watching Brighton play I'd consider them to be both on support roles, but worried that would lead to a lack of penetration up top

The 4231 is very flexible and lots of different roles can work - post your tactic and we can have a look!

Looks good! A note on the MEZ problem - I found that if I'm playing wide or above width, I get more mileage out of CM(A) with move into channels. As you mentioned, the MEZ tend to drift wide and this gave me better presence attacking the box in the middle.

If you're an Underdog, teams will often try to attack you and leave space to counter. Keeping that aggressive press but dropping the Engagement and Defensive lines back. If you really want to go for the Klopp style then you could keep the high line but drop the engagement back to standard - you see even LIverpool IRL going for a midblock during games a lot.

Looking forward to this! Direct non-hoofball football is my 'default' set up on FM so interesting to see other people's take on it.

Watched the Villa game tonight and it definitely looked like a Christmas tree to me. The two behind the striker seem to attack and defend very narrow - probably too narrow to be 4-3-3 wide. Might try and whip up a Christmas Tree tactic in game and see how it plays out.

I think you can go a lot of directions with him, but personally with that Teamwork/Work Rate/Determination I'd be training him for a midfield position.
He is also only 16 so I can see him growing and his Jumping Reach going up as a result, those physicals will likely improve a lot.

I feel like individual mentality used to be an important thing in regards to tactic creation, but it just isn't any more. Just removing it from view rather than leaving it in to be seen makes the most sense to me, it's just confusing people.

Yeah I'm sorry mate, we're gonna have to disagree here. Looked like a narrow 4-4-2 out of possession - much like his RBL team did.

I am also watching it now and it looks like a 4-4-2 or 4-2-4, maybe the deep midfielders as DMs. Defending Narrow.

Haringey Borough
Season 2 - 2023/2024 - 1st National League - Table
Easy peasy. Kept a similar team to the Conference South and kept going in the same vein. Tweaked the tactics away from a 4-3-3 narrow to a 4-3-1-2 narrow which allowed me to get both Ateef Konaté and Max Robson in my team and wrecking havoc. Other additions were Matthew Craig and top-scorer DJ Campton-Sturridge.
Season 3 - 2024/2025 - 5th League 2 - Table - xG
Not so easy peasy. I kept a very similar team to the year before, as well as the same shape/tactic and things started very promisingly, romping to the top of the league where we stayed until our 3rd round FA Cup loss away at Reading. Everything seemed to fall apart from there, as the xG demonstrates, we were almost always better than the opposition but we'd miss several good shots and then concede random long shots. We slumped to 5th and lost 3-0 on aggregate to Gillingham in the playoffs, a tie where we again had better xG and all the chances but lost to a penalty and two free kicks. The core of the team that got us up from the Conference South has gone as far as they can I think. In particular, our goalkeeper and forward line are nowhere near good enough if we want to get promoted unfortunately. I think this year I'll finally make large changes to the team and we'll see where we go - maybe recruiting some wingers to change shape would help.

Looking for Underlap tends to mean your full backs (who I assume are making most of the crosses) tend to look for an inside pass instead.

Interested to see if anyone's made an Austrian lower league database yet?

Nice to see people finding success with a 4-3-3 flat, as it's been my go to so far on my dafuge save due to lack of available wingers. Mine doesn't look too dissimilar to yours either, with two support players either side of an AF.

IW or IF in the midfield or wing positions along with sit narrower. Someone like Forsberg was potentially an AP I guess. RBL always used to defend as a 4-4-2 and the box was an 'in possession' occurrence.

Haringey are up. Pretty easy in the end, honestly didn't think we were that good in the league (certainly not 100 point good), and the xG kinda reflects that. We seemed to be even-ish in most games but had the best firepower. Went with a 4-3-3 narrow for most of the season as my two best wingers were stolen from me early on in the league while we seemed to have good strikers available. Other news, we are renting Leyton Orient's ground now and Kingstonian came up with us from the playoffs.

Last two years I did this as Nuneaton, time to give someone else a go. I reloaded 10 times and the team that looked most fun was Haringey Borough. Met Police also go promoted, but something drew me to Haringey. Possibly the Yellow kits.

I have something working at the moment with Atalanta that works very well. Lots of wide overloads and off the ball runs, the WCB definitely helps.

I can just add once again, that if a counter attack triggers, it does override all of your instructions and mentality settings to make players run and play the ball forward quickly. What you need to think about is how you want to attack outside of a counter attack and how you'd like to defend.
To trigger a counter attack you usually need to catch the opposition on the break forward bei either soaking up pressure and cutting of passing lanes if you want to win the ball back in your own half or by creating pressure and pressing traps if you want to win the ball back high up the pitch.
This is important - I feel like a lot of people don't know this. Think of a counter attack as an 'event' that happens in game. Your job when making a counter based tactic is working out how to remain defensively solid while triggering this in game event as much as possible.

It all depends on what you want the second midfielder to do. WCBs revolutionise the ME. They create new movement, new patterns of play, new overloads. Everything.
It means that you can be brave with a midfield two as long as you accept the potential risks. I'm using an AP on Support and BBM at the moment with no DM and WCBs on Support and it creates beautiful interplay.
Agreed. I would be aggressive with my midfield 2 in a 5-2-3 now that the WCB exists.

ive been having a lot of success from this 3-4-3 variant. I’m using wide CB’s but more reserved roles on defend and support, with a half back on the side with the support duty. Passing options and build up play are really fantastic. I’ve never been a 3 at the back guy but this role has added a new dimension for me
Similiar shape to my Gasperini Atalanta tactic. WCB on Defend or support really helps possession based 3 back tactics.

I quite like the role so far. On (D) duty you get them acting how many teams across Europe these days use their wide CBs - in that they come wide and engage in possession. Messing around with (S) and (A) can have some interesting results when trying to create overloads, although I'm currently creating a Gasperini 5-2-2-1 with Atalanta on Beta and I find keeping them on (D) allows them to stay relatively safe and still get involved in build up. Maybe I'd be able to justify them on attack or support with a defensive pivot.

Roberto de Zerbi - Tactical Attempt and Discussion

Here's an updated tactic for my second season with Rennes with a few adjustments, most notably trying the 'offset' of the AM and ST. I was initially hesistant as I was concerned it would make the pairing more one dimensional, but going to give it a go. I also 'widened' the width a bit to try and get the two wingers more involved, as well as moving the DLF to attack. This seems to allow the striker to play a solid double role of attacking in behind but also dropping in to link play.
