  1. The style of play is a hybrid of direct and high tempo play on the ball, and then pressing off it. Any tweaks or advice are appreciated

    OK! I'm here..

After 15 matches in League One, and other games (friendly, Carabao Cup ecc), i'm at 1st of November and i'll post stats and 3 tactic that i use now, for different situations..:D

4-3-3 with HB it will be used against teams with two forwards or with an attacking and attacking midfielder, favoring the exit from the defense with the full backs rising to favor the discharge.

the other two tactics remain very similar, but tend to be divided into home and away games; with the TM away obviously, but it still depends on the opponent, I can start with the center forward and then change to protect the advantage. it depends on the situation then.

I would be happy if you could comment on those choices. thank you!:):)

With the first 2, aren't FB and W both crossing heavy? Both sort of contradict the possession style you want to play. I'd change the FB to an IWB (S) (they will cross less often, which is normally the case with possession teams and also fill in at CM for the attacking mezzala)

I'm quite new to FM, so I don't know much but I know a little. Someone like @Experienced Defender can help you with this more then I can. Hopefully this helps :)

Happy to say it has! was 3rd and 3 points off top before I did this, won 5 league games in a row and now 2 points ahead at the top.

90% of teams we've been playing play a deep block, so I've added high DL for those and made the attacking width extremely wide, will drop back down to standard against better teams I think, but both tweaks have helped a lot against teams who sit deep :)

DLF (A) Wintzheimer has been getting a lot of goals as well, so again I'm happy, hopefully we can keep it up

I don't see any point in using the Work ball into box in such a gung-ho setup. Because for any instruction to be effective, it needs to be in harmony with the rest of the tactic, especially the setup of roles and duties.

On top of that, even apart from the WBiB, an attacking trio made of 3 roles of essentially the same type (direct attacking runners) - i.e. an AF paired with attacking IFs - usually leads to competition for space and influence up front and consequently tends to make a tactic rather ineffective.

So if you want to play with IFs and the striker all on attack duties, I would suggest switching the striker to more of a creator role (e.g. CF or DLF or TQ). Or switching the IFs to IWs (or one winger and one IW).

thanks, and I'll take @lfds89advice as well

  5. 2007 was the last time Hamburg were in the Champions League, and in 2018, for the first time, they were relegated to the Bundesliga 2. My aim, after taking over Daniel Thioune, is to return them back to former glory.

Note: I've actually been doing this save for a little bit now, so I haven't only just started it, got to Christmas for season 1, but it's taken me a while to find this forum :D

                                                        Overview

Hamburger Sport-Verein e.V. (German: [hamˈbʊʁɡɐ ˌʃpɔʁt fɛɐ̯ˈʔaɪ̯n]), commonly known as Hamburger SV, Hamburg or HSV ([haː ʔɛs ˈfaʊ̯]), is a German sport club based in Hamburg, its largest branch being its football department. Although the current HSV was founded in June 1919 from a merger of three earlier clubs, it officially traces its origin to 29 September 1887 when the first of the predecessors, SC Germania, was founded. Until 2018 when the team were relegated for the first time in history, HSV's football team had the distinction of being the only team that had played continuously in the top tier of the German football league system since the founding of the club at the end of World War I. It was consequently also the only team that had played in every season of the Bundesliga since its foundation in 1963.

HSV has won the German national championship six times, the DFB-Pokal three times and the League Cup twice. The team's most successful period was from the mid-1970s until the mid-1980s when, in addition to several domestic honours, they won the 1976–77 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 1982–83 European Cup. The outstanding players of this period were Horst Hrubesch, Manfred Kaltz, and Felix Magath, all of whom were regulars in the German National Team. To date, HSV's last major trophy was the 1986–87 DFB-Pokal.

HSV play their home games at the Volksparkstadion in Bahrenfeld, a western district of Hamburg. The club colours are officially blue, white and black but the home kit of the team is white jerseys and red shorts. The team's most common nickname is "die Rothosen" (the Red Shorts). As it is one of Germany's oldest clubs, it is also known as der Dinosaurier (the Dinosaur). HSV have rivalries with Werder Bremen, with whom they contest the Nordderby, and Hamburg-based FC St. Pauli, with whom they contest the Hamburg derby.

HSV is notable in football as a grassroots organisation with youth development a strong theme. The club had a team in the Women's Bundesliga from 2003 to 2012 but it was demoted to Regionalliga level because of financial problems. Other club departments include badminton, baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, cricket, darts, ice hockey, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, handball, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation exercises. These departments represent about 10% of the club membership. HSV is one of the biggest sports clubs in Germany with over 84,000 members in all its departments[1] and stated by Forbes to have been among the 20 largest football clubs in the world.[2]

                                                    The Team

Not only is it always nice to rebuild a sleeping giant, but within our Hamburg team we have some very good, decent PA young players for long term, to name a few:

Amadou Onana - our DM, nobody really too much better then him, has good PA and a very good long term player which is what I need in this save.

Rick Van Drongelen: solid player beside our other CB Ambrosius, starts the season off injured and is so until early January (im around christmas season 1 on my save, so he isn't fully back just yet)

Bakery Jatta: our winger, very good player and has been our main goalscoring outlet so far. Hopefully we keep onto him for a long time, he has potential for sure.

Stephen Ambrosius- our other centre back, not as good as Drongelen but again has decent PA and is another long term player.

Transfer Window: main ins and outs

Tbf, we weren't very active in the market, with a budget of only around 1 million, but here are the 2 ins and 2 outs anyway:

                                                           Ins:

Luis Carbonell- a 17 year old striker from Zaragoza who'll be the replacement for Wintzheimer. Good PA and another long term player

Unai Vencedor- a wonderkid DM who'll play with Onana in my 4-2-3-1, didn't have the finances to get him on a permanent basis so he's only a season long loan for now, hopefully somewhere in the future we can get him permanently.

                                                             Outs:

Khaled Narey: wanted to join West Brom as they played in a higher league. He'll regret that.

Martin Wintzheimer: replaced with Carbonell as he was aging.

As the season goes I'll update you about what happens, hopefully you're enjoying this thread so far :)

  6. The overall style of play is aimed to be a hybrid of a slightly more direct style on the ball and pressing off it. It doesn't let me send a screenshot of tactic for some reason, so I'll just put it below

    Counter

    Counter-Press

    Out of Possession

    Higher LOE

    More Urgent

    Prevent Short GK distribution

    Use offside trap

(my passing length and tempo are both on default for attacking mentality, so slightly more direct and higher tempo) I also accidentally posted it before I even put the tactic :D

Any help would be appreciated :)

Are you changing anything, tactically, for the last 15 mins of the game? I’ve found managing games to be quite effective.

Sometimes, but it tends to be more when we're losing and need to go broke for a goal. I feel that's likely the problem tbf, especially when it's a 1 goal lead in the last 4 or 5 minutes of a game, I don't really focus on the tactical side and becoming more defensive, more about getting another.
That's likely been where I've blown it away so many times. Brighton prime example, when they got it to about 4-2, I thought 'oh, well' but never changed anything, looking back now I watched the highlights again, and we were very open towards last 10 minutes and when it was 4-3, at that point, you should really start becoming more defensive when it's a small lead. Two games ago now, against Portsmouth, was 1-0 to us about 85 minutes in. Couple of minutes later, long kick up the field, headed on, and it's 1-1. So, yeah, I probably do need to become a bit more tactically aware in those situations.

  8. Just came out of a game against QPR as Forest, season 2 of my save. With 17 minutes of 90 to go, I score my third of the game. Full time: QPR 3-3 Forest.
This isn't even a first-time occurrence. Earlier in the season: at half time we are leading Brighton 4-1. End of the game, the final score? 4-4. Also earlier this season, though this one is normal, but with 15 minutes left, I lead Reading 0-1. Full time, 1-1. Same thing last season vs Birmingham, leading 3-1 with about 10 minutes of the game left: FT 3-3.
I don't actually know the problem. Are my players bottlejobs or is it just an FM thing?
If anyone does know the problem I'd appreciate your help :)

It definitely has to do with your tactic. I cannot know if it may also have to do with the quality of your players and/or their suitability to your tactical style, because I don't know them. But the tactic definitely has its weaknesses.

So here they are in my view:

    - the left flank is potentially too vulnerable, given 2 attack duties there (I say potentially, because the risk can vary depending on players' quality and abilities)

    - also on the left flank, both roles are crossing-heavy, which runs counter to your possession-oriented TIs such as WBiB and short passing in the first place

    - by the same token, playing wingers (role) on both flanks also contradicts the possession-minded orientation of the tactic

    - an instruction such as tight marking does not make much sense in an attack-minded tactic like yours, including the 433dm wide as a formation (because it's far more suitable for defensive styles and bottom-heavy formations)

    - your high pressing urgency also adds a bit of defensive risk, not least because your compactness is lower than optimal + playing with a higher D-line (balls over the top) + high team mentality (which already encourages a proportionally more aggressive behavior in the defensive phase of play)

    - wide attacking width can make it harder for your players to successfully implement your intended short-passing/possession-oriented style of play (due to the greater distance between players)

    - the attack duty of your SK totally runs counter to your possession-minded tactical style for obvious reasons (in FM21 even SK on support tends to play too many long adventurous passes, let alone on attack)

The above are the most obvious issues IMHO. There are possibly a couple more, but let's first sort out these.

So you either need to tweak certain roles so as to make them better suited to your (largely) possession-oriented instructions or to tweak some instructions in order to adapt them to the current setup of roles and duties.

    thanks for the feedback

Seeing the amount of player role problems there seems to be, i'll definitely be tweaking those first, change the SK to a normal GK and try out Mighten and Lolley  (my wingers) around position wise. Will change formations too, I noticed that with my 4-2-3-1 I used before, even if I wasn't winning the games, we were playing better.

Will calm down with the attacking intent too cause we lost 4-1 to Brentford 😳 also noticed using the 4-2-3-1 we didn't concede too many

Again, thanks for the help :)

  10. I'm new to FM. Currently, I'm doing a Nottingham Forest save on FM21, and our top target is to get to the play off spots. I am in the play off zone, 4th in the league, not a million miles away from 2nd. But, now I simply can't win. In my last 8 games, my record is P8, W1, D4, L3. I don't know what's going on, but it might have something to do with my tactic, so I came here.
It doesn't let me send a screenshot for some reason, so I figured I'll just put it below:
Positive 4-3-3 DM Wide-  Custom Control Possession
                                                                                                      SK (AT)

                                                                                                  DM (DE)
                                                                                      MEZ (AT)              BWM (SU)
LW (SU)                AF (AT)              RW (AT)                                                                                           In possession:
    Shorter Passing
    Play out of Defence
    Work Ball into the Box
    Higher Tempo
    Wide

    In Transition:
    Roll It Out
    Distribute to Centre Backs
    Counter
    Counter Press

    Out of possession
    High DL
    High LOE
    More Urgent
    Use Tighter Marking
    Offside Trap On

I have probably got it wrong in quite a few of areas, any feedback and tweaks would be appreciated :)

  11. so, i am new to fm, having only got the game 2 weeks ago. currently, i'm doing a Southampton save. i play a positive 4-2-3-1 gegenpress. however, things are falling apart. towards the relegation zone, having only won 1 game against also struggling Leicester. i am beginning to play very slightly better but still having a disastrous season. i don't exactly struggle to create, i tend to have more XG, and if I don't, it's not a huge difference, however sometimes I can't score, and im constantly getting done by direct balls through defence. since I'm still trying to adapt to the fundamentals of this game, I was wondering if anybody could help me get out of this mess, maybe a change in tactics or formation. i would send a screenshot but it doesn't load up at all, so my tactics are below, they are:
    in possession:
    pass into space
    play out of defence
    hit early, whipped crosses
    higher tempo

    in transition:
    take short kicks
    distribute to cbs
    counter
    counter-press

    out of possession:
    high line
    extremely urgent
    prevent short gk distribution
    offside trap

as i said, any help with tweaks would be nice
