    The Never-ending Season

I must admit with this last season ends, but the European club competitions continue into pre-season and then next season it feels like a Never-ending season.

And given our success at Viking, qualifying for Europe in each of my five seasons in charge, my players have barely had any time off. The Board give them a couple of weeks but have them report back before Christmas. I then give them another 2-3 weeks off and that's it.

How do the Norwegian clubs in European club competitions cope with it in real-life, @XaW?

Currently they don't - this particular issue is due to the swiss style European format which of course doesn't exist in real life till next season. So I suppose we'll have to wait till this time next year for an answer.

    Homegrown at Club issues...

    AGAIN...

    --

That's a great shout, @I have nothing to say but, after checking the first club listed on the Player > History > Career Stats screen I don't think that's it.

I updated the spreadsheet with the first club...

    HGC_first-club.png.56a8614f46b8f9f79ffaefdb2772b022.png

... and Kjetil Istre was Viking 2 and Roger Vestgøte was Viking.

Another thing to check then, have they spent 3 years at viking rather than 3 years at viking 2 and/or viking and viking 2? (If that makes sense?)

    Homegrown at Club issues...

    AGAIN...

    --

So, it's squad registration time and I'm having the same issue in January 2033 as I had last January in so much as players who I think are HGC and have the HGC_00.png.9a94ea697ce301af14376865157c38bf.png icon next to them, count as HGC when I register them for the UEFA Champions League but they do NOT count as HGC when I register them for Eliteserien.

And I have no idea why.

The two players in question are Kjetil Istre and Roger Vestgøte.

I have nine players who show as HGC (I've also included Martin Warholm and Per Andreas Haugerud Hagen in the screenshot below as they should qualify as HGC later this year.

    HGC_01_HGCplayers.png.d698f3cfd3990c6afdc7445d2d52ac81.png

Now the rules are written slightly differently:

    Eliteserien

    HGC_04_Lg_rules.png.8c6f2750cec9e545a4befe844d1428f5.png

    UEFA Champions League

    HGC_05_UChLg_rules.png.6d44aec19b179fb6c6d9147608e9cf94.png

So, essentially, it's the difference between "(regardless of their spells away from the club) between 0th and 21st birthdays" and "between 15th and 21st birthdays".

    --

As the following show all nine players with HGC register as HGC for the UEFA Champions Legue, but...

    HGC_05_UChLg.thumb.png.a5d0f10c40c5c40a0d4317dac3d6fbd6.png

... only seven of the nine register as HGC for Eliteserien.

    HGC_04_Lg.thumb.png.31c500fc4f7c6ca3b6ed22ef83664733.png

With Kjetil Istre and Roger Vestgøte being the ones who don't register as HGC. And I have no idea why?

You may need to do more analysis to confirm, but my suspicion is based on if they show as first club being Viking, rather than Viking 2 (which would be a bug I assume if so).

  4. I tend to play either a deep lying mid support paired with a ball winner mid support or a central mid support, so I do occasionally use a BWM

Agree guaranteed yellow card magnet but that's just something you have to accept. You also need to bare in mind that BWM's won't really hold position as they are chasing the ball down, so can leave a gap in the midfield - so no good paring then with a roaming playmaker as they'll both bugger off and leave you wide open. They can be useful though - as a real life example consider the difference at Derby since Adams came in compared to Bird or Hourihane who I guess would be considered defensive deep laying playmakers.

Never bother with a defensive BWM, if you want a defensive mid then do central mid Def or play an anchor man.

    "Squad Registration Considerations"

    --

I haven't registered the Hødd First Team Squad yet, but that will need to be done very soon.

I've had a look and all the senior players I've signed can be registered (if I don't register the three transfer listed players Marius AlmStian Nygard and Jørgen Fjeldskår), which will then meet all requirements and look like this:

    squad_registration.png.5fbe61fee7aca6d3d10df3f4d498610e.png

My only dilemma is there are four young players I'd like to register but I'm only going to have room to register two of them.

I was going to register one young striker, Aleksander Ørstavik but he's missed all of pre-season with a cruciate ligament injury he picked up last season. During pre-season, Oliver Eliassen Aske stepped forward with two goals and one assist from one start and five sub appearances, for an average rating of 7.10, including appearances against all four Eliteserien teams we played.

The other two young players I was considering were defender Aleksander Van der Spa and utility player (mainly down the right) Hakon Stivang.

Thoughts are, don't register the young players, you can play them in the cup unregistered and see if they are worth it, plus you can always add them in later when injuries or bad form hit or you sell the transfer listed ones in the summer window. Also, not sure if you have or not, only register 2 keepers, you can then swap it around last min if one is unavailable

"What do you think to the Hødd Squad?"

    --

After a season where we finished 5th, and lost in the semi-finals of the OBOS-ligaen Payoffs, I'd be very interested in your thoughts on the squad (see posts immediately above this one), where Hødd should strengthen, who you would look to offload, any youngsters you think are worth giving an opportunity? That sort of thing.

    Many thanks.

There's always loads of good players available in Norway on a free at the end of each season so I'd wait to see who is available before planning on who stays.

Trying to sign our on-loan players

    --

We have two players on loan with us currently, Abel Stensrud from Brann and Runar Hauge from Jerv. I knew they were both out-of-contract at the end of the season so I decided to try and sign them both for next season.

Hopefully, we'd have better luck with Runar Hauge.

Note: The lesson I've learnt here is that, unlike in England, Norwegian clubs can agree deals with players playing in Norway during the last six months of their contracts.

    --

"I have a brother, you know."

When we'd verbally agreed personal terms with Runar, he told me that he had a brother who was a free agent and looking for a club.

Of course, I knew Runar had a brother Jens Petter Hauge, a Bodo/Glimt and Norway legend, the last I heard he was playing in the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt.

No way would Jens Petter Hauge be interested in joining Hødd. But Runar encouraged us to speak to the agent.

    So we did.

The agent advised us that Jens Petter had some interest in joining Hødd and that we should move quickly as there was other interest.

Still not believing it, we entered in contract negotiations, and...

Just an educated guess, but suspect it's to do with the inbox filters/topic following your 'personal assistant' sets for you. When unemployed they come up, when employed I don't think they do (though you'll see them in the news section sometimes)

I just add available jobs as one of the sections of the home page (normally instead of financial as that doesn't change enough to need to see it every single time)

@XaW @I have nothing to say (or anybody), any idea why Odds Ballklubb's nickname is Oddrane?

And weren't they called Odd Grenland some time back as well? I have a scarf from 2001 (that was given to me as a gift) with "Odd Grenland UEFA Cup 2001" on it.

    Odds_BK.thumb.png.15e743ba365e6655ce0ffc592728660d.png

The only information I can find online about being called Odd is that they are named after a character from a novel about an athlete called Odd. Wikipedia however does have the "citation needed" note next to that but I can't find anything elsewhere relating to it.

They were originally just Odd, then in the 90's changed to Odd Grenland as Grenland is the district of Telemark they are in (Telemark being the equivalent of a county), but dropped it about 10 years later saying they wanted to represent all Telemark.

  11. My registration tactic is normally along the lines of:

    2x GK

    4x full backs

    5x central Def

    5 x central mid

    5 x wingers

    2 x strikers

Leaving a couple of spaces left over for some sort of cb/FB or winger/attack mid utility players. I find I never have enough wingers.

Players who play in multiple positions or sides are gold dust, sign them up - Norway seems to have quite a few center mid/full backs which is great.

3rd choice keeper is then one of the additional 5 that can be registered on a youth contract, along with whoever you have in the youth team who will be useful.

Don't get too hung up on the squad registration, when you first have to do it you will second guess yourself but after a couple of seasons with it, it becomes natural - I actually find it useful to help me plan my squad overhaul rather than standard FM player transfer binge on deadline day!

Points-wise you like similar to where I was after 6/7 games, don't forget you had a very short preseason by the time you came in and brought in a huge number of new players so none of them know how to play together/ the system, are amateur so aren't training much anyway and you are expected to finish bottom anyway

It'll come together! You just need to settle on a system. After 8 or so games I stopped tweaking and we got more consistent 😊

  13. Just popping up to say hello, I'm the sitting next to Stu at pride park friend who is "very knowledgeable" about Norwegian football (I dunno about that but I know a little 😁) friend Stu references earlier in the thread. Have joined after much nagging from him 🤣

Ironically (probably cos it's the only job we are good enough for) I also took over at Loddefjord over the weekend but as, unlike Stu I have no life, I have completed season 1 already so looking forward to seeing how he gets on. I don't think I'm nearly as interesting or as good a writer as Stu however so probably won't be making any threads of my own, happy to just read along and occasionally chip in if wanted.
