  1. Would love to get an official answer on this. I've done some searches but mixed answers have added to my confusion

    FMT Assistant Manager Coaching

Due to the fact FMT doesn't have any coaches and assistant manager taking charge or training, I always assumed it was very important in FMT to get an assistant manager with high coaching abilities, but on some old FMT thread I've read only you clubs rep and training facilities affect training effectiveness. Please can we get a penultimate answer on this?

    FMT Chief Scout

Despite being 9 slots, I've never managed to get more scouting staff than 7 on FMT is this the limit? How do you get more?

I play a 4231 and my striker is prolific every season.... I’ve attached screenshots of my tactic and the striker:

my striker also doesn’t take my penalties, for some reason he’s useless at them.

i get a lot of assists from my wb(a) and my right winger but lots of variations in types of goals scored too.

Wow looks like a perfect tactic, love the combination of roles you've got going on. Did you try a FB-a on the right?

I've found PF to be a good all round position for forwards, I'm pretty sure you can fit them into most tactics, the a/s/d duties offer a lot of variation. I've been playing a 4231 on my Lisbon save with a PF-s or PF-a (depending on what role the AM is) and they offer a nice complete package

I'm currently 5th after 14 games. 1 Point behind Juve. I'm also playing on FM19 where we are predicted to finish 9t

Nice, from my limited knowledge so far looks like you've got it right. After reading and watching more I'd agree one of the strikers should be an AF or PF-a, I still think a CF-s should be used as I find they often drift the widest of all the striker roles. It also seems a Mez-a is pretty much essential.

I think you TI or focusing play down the wings is also spot on

  4. Once again my fav youtube channel has dropped a bomb. This time on Atalanta who I've always like...

Despite Atalantas recent rise I haven't actually seen them play! But regardless this video alone has got me wanting to translate this to FM - which seems very difficult if not impossible given the flexibility of the roles

So Far this is what I've cooked up....

                    AF-a   CF-s

                        AM-s

    IWB-s.  Mez-a  Car-s   WB-a

        BPD        CD        BPD

Am-s with "Roam From Position" and "More Direct Passing"

TIs = Positive, Wide, Play Out Of Defence, Overlaps, Work Ball Into Box.

Anyone watched Atalanta or have more input??

Saves where you are the national dominant team (e.g. Ajax) tend to get boring fast cause you only really have on goal which is winning the Champions League. Once you are eliminated you basically sit through the season bored.

Yeah thats how I feel, once I'm eliminated especially if its early in the competition, it basically just turns into a season long wait till next year. Not that the domestic teams don't offer any stern resistance, they can make it very challenging, but if you don't win the league then its basically a failure!

I don't know maybe I'm just going about those types of saves all wrong? I play on FMT so not sure of the lack of engagement with training and minor details plays a part?

I've had many go's at Ajax and Red Star Belgrade. I've now settled with a 3. Liga team. Much more fun since you need every single point in your goal to promote and ultimately qualify & win the CL. By the time you reach the 1. Bundesliga and qualify CL you should have enough experience to pull it off.

Yeah thats why I usually play in the "bigger" leagues, you just never feel like you hit a glass ceiling as the domestic prize money and sponsorship is so much more accommodating for wages and thus improving your team.

I think the joy of the save for these nations is not going one of the big boys like you've mentioned but taking maybe mid level or lower league team up and usurping the big boys in the nation and then becoming established in Europe. For me on FM21 (before world events took effect) my thoughts were to do this type of save but to give it even more longevity I was going to take a third division club up and take them into the European arena.

Okay I can see the fun in that.

There seems to be swarms of FM managers who love an Ajax save, I'd love to get their take on it.

  7.

I'm once again thinking of ditching my save this year of a top European club in a small nation. And wanted to get some advice from people who enjoy playing with these type of clubs

The reason for me ditching (once again) is the inability to compete financially against European clubs in bigger/more reputable leagues. This year at Sporting Lisbon, won the Euro cup start a new season with 20million which admittedly isn't to be dismissed, I bought two half-decent Champions League quality players after a few sales. But the biggest barrier is wages, I can't sign many of the players I wanted due to their bigger contracts at clubs in bigger leagues. I can't even get my start player (Fernandes) to sign a new contract at around 100-130k as a star player. This is also compounded by other contract renewals, players now asking for bigger salaries as "squad players" which then has a knock on effect across the whole team, everyone asking for the same amount, 50k - previously a wage of a top player at the club. Now I'm struggling to even beat teams domestically, whether they sit back and stubbornly defend or surprise me with much more attacking football than expected. I just can't see where its all going for me now.

ANYWAY. I just wanted to get some advice/opinions from the many people who clearly enjoy playing with these teams or enjoy these saves, for me I just find it frustrating, it seems being in a smaller rep league means you just can never compete financially in Europe, it just boils down to a development save but then "bigger" clubs poach your most promising players - to be expected but so frustrating after being patent with them to get them where you want. Now I'm going back to my tried and tested save in a decent rep league (England/Spain/Germany/Italy/France), where the potential to grow the club doesn't feel limited in anyway. So wheres the fun with these other type of teams???

This is the most difficult. What we have in our mind, theory... And what we see really in games and in our results.

100%. I used to go in with a set idea of how I want to play, adjusting roles and TIs as I went, but more and more I'm going in with a very loose idea and letting everything be shaped by whats working out on the pitch and producing results, this works best of course one minor change at a time

  9. Okay heres the tactic I'm using that has been getting much more productive results for my AMC in a 4231. Using the Treq role means he is higher up when out of possession and a consistent outlet when we win possession back lower down the field, this means he sees much more of the ball and makes transitions and counters much more dangerous, as a pose to AM/AP which come waaay too deep. That deep positioning is nothing new to FM2020 but being far less productive/dangerous higher up the pitch is. Higher up the pitch the Treq is a perfect hybrid between an AP-a and a SS, getting into the box more that the in-game description. Now all of this might be due to the combination of other roles (which is why I uploaded a screenshot of my entire tactic), Personally I feel you could combine the Treq with any forward roles (ST/AML/AMR), but having deeper lying playmakers definitely helps the Trq, I think its something to do with opening up the space in the middle or the general distance between CM and AM stratas which would previously be too close or even intertwined. In this screen shot I have a RPM and a CM-s but I usually have the CM-d as a DLP-d/s, it sounds like playmaker overkill but its causing havoc in the Portuguese league and Europa cup (currently in 2nd and in final).

I hope this somehow helps others in a similar predicament

Looks good. I tried a very similar formation on my Lyon save.

I'll be interested to see how much success you get from your SS. Also you CM-D wont really go back how your arrow suggests, instead they will be pretty static, sounds boring but works really well in with only 2 in centre of midfield, allowing the other player to be a runner or playmaker, essentially working like a DM but in the CML/R position

  11. 2 hours ago, Britrock said:

Getting AMCs to be wildly productive is difficult because a lot of teams play DMs that play in the same area of the pitch and condense the space in the middle of the pitch, meaning players are constantly looking to the wings instead of going through the middle becasue that's where the space is. The important thing is to make sure that they have space within your team though - check the average positions with the ball for the starting 11 and make sure your AMC doesn't have your striker or MCs sat on top of him restricting his space to operate.

Yes thats why I always want a Mezzalla or RPM type of role there, I want them to be a really dynamic or at least much more aggressive going forward, the SS is the closet thing but I don't want them dribbling so much and want them to break the D-line more than that role offers. Also despite the SS high attacking Mentality I don't find they offer much of a transitional outlet, I think its a role geared more towards narrow formations (AMC-ST-AMC) or strikerless (even in strikerless i find it isn't aggressive enough).

Anyway, I'm having great success so far with Treq (after 4 games) so fingers crossed. He offers a fantastic outlet high up the pitch before the striker when we win the ball, I'm also finding he's surprisingly aggressive in his movement despite in-game description of sitting in the hole - which is great for me. I don't think I've ever used the role in that position before (I haven't had to as previously AMs+APs worked well/better) so watching and learning is really exciting for me.

  12. Just wanted to pickup on the subsequent discussion here about AMCs underperforming in 4231 and say I've finally been having some success with this position in this formation with a Trq. I think many rule it our due to the in-game discription about not defending but I find he does okay in that regard and more importantly is a decent creative outelt up top during transition. Its early days but so far the differences have been night and day compared to any of the other roles

Sounds like your suffering is similar to mine. I've got some great AFs, IFs and creative AMs on my Sporting save but have really struggled to get them to work in the desired 4231 with the striker spearheading everything (my favorite formation and tactic).  I know people loath it when you blame the ME but I've found this years game much more difficult to get any attacking lone forward the support he needs (I could do this in previous years with 4231 much easier). Counter intuitively I've found AFs or Poachers don't make the desired D-line breaking runs I want either. Most of the AM positions are the same as last year, they drop very deep so you need to get the AM-R/L to heavily support the striker. I've found Wingers in this years game to be pretty blunt and haven't been able to get the other positions narrow enough to the striker. I think this years introduction of the IW has changed some of the other roles or at least made them less effective somehow, like most I have managed to get IW to work. I have found success (in March of first season and only lost 2 games!) but as you have said the roles and ME isn't doing what I want or expect.

Anyway back to your tactic. After my experiences I'd change the striker role to a deeper one, maybe a DLF or PF. I'd also switch you fullback mentalities so a FB-S/WB-S on the side of the attacking winger and a FB-A/WB-A on the side of your support winger. Lastly I'd take off Be More Expressive, its not that its a bad team instruction I've just found it muddies the waters when your refining/experimenting with a tactic - your essentially telling them to do whatever they want in the final third and ignore your instructions, meaning your not seeing the positive and negative effects of your tactic. One you've got your tactic swinging the way you want it then maybe you can explore Be More Expressive to see what it does. Other than that I don't see much wrong with your tactic, but I'd maybe experiment with the tempo

Just to add to this, if you swap the FB&WB mentalities then also swap the DLP and VOL so the DLP-d can cover your WB-a's more attacking runs

Glad it isn't just me! I used to find AF brilliant for this system but had no luck this year.  Similarly, I've had little success with the DLF or the PF but am happy to try.  Oddly though the PF in a 4-3-3 high press system was fantastic

I put "be more expressive on" as a way to break teams down - just not scoring enough and I had hoped that would help.

With regards to tempo - are you suggesting trying to shift it up or down?

In my Sporting 4231 the striker is a PF-A and thats the most attacking role I've had success with. I'm going to toy with pulling the mentality back to standard and increasing the tempo, that could work, but I LOVE the extra forward movement positive and attacking mentalities offer. Downside is that I'd need to subsequently increase the mentality of the roles around the striker to ensue he's well supported, as thats something I'm already struggling with I'm not hopeful of the outcome. Pulling the striker into a deeper role could solve all of this (hence my advice to you) but the whole point of my tactic (and the tactics I love to create) are to feed a spearheading striker, this also makes sense due to the type of players I have. I'm sure it can work, I just haven't found a way to do it consistently yet in this years game.

I'm currently in the midst of a Pentagon challenge where I seek to win the champions league on 5 continents.  I am also trying to be quite flexible with each team that I take charge of rather than simply taking the one tactical approach and shoe-horning it in everywhere.

Anyway, after spending 5 seasons in South Africa, I won the CAF Champions League twice and left to take up the vacant role at River plate.  In South Africa, I utilised a high pressing 4-3-3 as there was a lot of physical ability but a lack of technique.  When I took over at River, I obviously inherited a more technically proficient squad.  Furthermore, I actually have some excellent attacking midfielders and I wanted to utilise them.  I had always liked the balance of a 4-2-3-1 as it allowed for the use of both wide players and a traditional # 10.  My plan was to evolve my previous tactics in light of my better quality squad and to shift to a more possession orientated style of play, but also being one that fit with the board expectations of being attacking and entertaining.  That being said, I am not looking to have possession for possessions sake, I would like to have a sort of progressive style that is more meaningful and positive that the traditional tiki-taka (a more hybrid system, not sure how to describe this overly well).

Knowing that the 4-2-3-1 had a habit of being defensively suspect, I initially went with a variation that employed 2 defensive midfielders:

    4-2DM-3-1.thumb.png.49fafad7507074da848627314a90913c.png

This did garner me success in that I won the Libertadores, the Cup and the League but this was mainly on the back of a solid defence, a reliance on set pieces and a large slice of luck in winning 4 penalty shootouts.  I know that conventional wisdom will be to not change what isn't broken, but I would like some advice to improve upon this as whilst I am happy with the results, the methods were a bit dull.

The reason for this is that whilst my deep midfielders and my wingers were excellent, the general play going forward was highly lacking.  I could never get a reliable contribution in terms of goals or assists from my AMC or ST and the majority of my wins were as a result of set pieces or long range shots from my AML or my segundo volante.  We never really hit that gear where you could turn the opposition over, and thus I feel that there is actually a lot in terms of setup and style that could be improved.  I was very pleased with the contribution of my DM's and my wide AM's although I did feel that there was a lack of penetration into the box

I would appreciate any kind of wisdom that could be shared about my roles and duties, although I would largely want to keep the same formation as it matches the players and positions in the squad.

I did wonder whether the play was too compressed in the final third of the pitch and whether I would be better suited to a fully deep 4-2-3-1 (with the 3 in the midfield strata).  I also do wonder that I haven't chosen the right combination of roles and duties to make this work properly.

Many thanks in advance to you all.

  16. I want the same things I've wanted ever since FMT was released for iPad

THE ABILITY TO ADD MORE NATIONS TO DATABASE!

I find it so limiting with just 3, it near enough rules out selecting smaller leagues for long saves like Holland, Portugal, Scotland or Mexico. Can they not just limit the database/player count? Why does it have to be limited anyway? My iPad can handle more easily, at half a star its speedy. Surely iOS devices have improved significantly sine the first FMT was available and can at least handle one more nation.

I haven't had another go yet, but I like your suggestions. I think that when we are camped in the opposition half, it's a bit redundant having a designated ball winner, especially in the more advanced part of your midfield three. I think in my next try, I will pair Kovacic with Loftus Cheek or Barkley insted of Kante, as I believe both provide more of a threat going forward that Kante does.

I also don't think my vision of Hazard taking on - and beating lots of defenders was quite accurate. So I think instead I will push up the left back further just to create an overlap, which can distract the defence away from Hazard a bit more so that he has more freedom to use his flair. I will also try him as a trequartista, as I didn't see him on the ball enough on the left, despite 'exploiting the left flank' so maybe it's a better idea to let him float around to find the ball himself, and let the left back provide width.

I also didn't realise quite how fast Hazard was, I don't watch Cheslea games, and always thought he was a Messi-like player. Very agile and good at dribbling, but not the fastest. So maybe I'll drop the LOE a little and increase our passing directness and tick counter, to make us a little more direct and use Hazard's pace on a counter attack.

Nice. Yeah I don't think dribbling in FM resembles real football enough, either that or it just mentally scars me each time a player runs into a defender for the 5th time in a row (although o be fair I think its slightly better in this years game). For me 1v1 or passing your man isn't a tactical option in FM but as I said earlier, but that forces you to be a better manager/tactic creator so :)

  18. If your playing a 433 I strongly recommend using Attacking mentality as it will push up your CMs more for that essential movement into the AM void. I often push this further by using very aggressive CM roles (CM-A or Mez). It also helps make your deeper forwards (F9/DLF etc) pose more threat. If your on FM19 I'd also recommend a Treq in one of the AM-R/L positions, this role worked wonders for me in every tactic I created in FM19, it doesn't posses the same all round qualities in FM20 for some reason (maybe since they introduced IW there).

Generally in this years game I'm struggling more than ever to make the roles do what I'm used to or even do what I want entirely. It's like I'm having to re-learn a lot of the roles again and how they perform on the pitch. This is annoying as its what made me good at the game, understanding what the roles do on the pitch IS the game in my eyes. I'm a little like you in that I'm still winning but Its frustrating not seeming what I intended or what I expect

  19. Much needed. Great post. These variation of overlaps and movement patterns are all I ever think about when making a tactic. You need to create at LEAST 2 routes to goal. I've found one overarching style often doesn't stay successful for long (all short passes or all crossing).

One thing I will add is that when creating a tactic is best not to look for or rely on 1v1s. Instead you should look to unlock/release that player into a 1v0 (or 1v1 with the keeper). I also personally find it very frustrating relying on a players dribbling skill to create chances. Unlike most guides out there I NEVER put a good dribbler in a dribbling role. I've found this just makes them hog the ball too much and run into defenders again and again. Usually if a player has sufficient dribbling to pass a player they will have a few PPMs that reinforce this, combine that with a different role such as WP or Trq and you have a much more versatile, interesting and unpredictable player. Not relying on dribbling players also helps you refine your tactic building skills. I strive to create tactics that don't require/rely on outstanding individual traits, if you can do that then you should have a bulletproof tactic has movement all over the pitch and multiple ways of scoring.
