Zvonimir Boban
What's he been saying? root and branch reform of the system, Luke Shaw is the only youngster guaranteed to be international class, uruguay are an average side and suarez somehow got two goals by running around like a headless chicken. kontermann
If England had a decent keeper (Hart is WAY overrated, he nowhere near european class as some here claim), Suarez wouldnt have scored. Gerrard is way past his prime and what a blunder again. England only getting half-decent chances because Uruguay sat back and wanted to get the 1-0, showing pure class then when it mattered and scored again after the equalizer. England need a complete re-haul, maybe this is kicking the FA´s ass to do something about it. All in all the 2-1 is way to nice for England, shouldve been 4-1 or something like that. Zlatan can't believe he was eliminated while some of these clowns qualified Exactly.
dan99
Steve Gerrard, England captain, couldn't even do the intreview after the game and sent Jagielka instead. Should be stripped of the captaincy immediately, no heart, no passion. You're an embarrassment.

themadsheep2001
More defensively solid probably, but the only good thing about this tournament has been our attack, and a midfield 3 of Gerrard, Barry and Henderson would definitely have inhibited that. If we're going 4-3-3, I'd rather see Gerrard-Henderson-Barkely or Wilshere, neither naturals there but much more dynamic and able to do something. Can then have Lallana/Welbeck/Sterling/Ox for the wing and Sturridge/Rooney up front. Still don't think the results would've been much different though to be honest. I think we'd have drawn both games personally, but we'd look more coherent in midfield. FWIW I would have played only one of Gerrard/Barry/Carrick at any one time. The latter two to be more solid defensively
Big Geordie
I thought Rooney actually did OK tonight, but too many average performances from average players. Waddle called it right on 5Live earlier, when he said that the Premier League has sucked the life out of the England side over the last 10-15 years. We might have the 'best league in the world' (the one that makes the most money more like!) but it's led to the production of average national players, who are hyped to hell, given superstar wages and live like film stars through the media. Whether Hodgson stays in charge or not, I dunno - but the likes of Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, etc need to be jettisoned and give the younger players time to get experience and build for the next few tournaments. The setup of the PL always needs looking at, but whilst it makes so much money - it will never happen. The England team will continue to head on a downward spiral, same as Scotland and Wales. SJ234
I honestly think playing a 4231 with this team is pointless. We are relying on Gerrard and Henderson to play defensive midfield and Baines and Johnson to supplement the wings when none of these four can do a good enough job in these roles, (well maybe Henderson can). That leaves us with not enough up front or when we do get forward players like Rooney or Sturridge can't run on to the ball and are surrounded by players and Welbeck and Sterling have their creativity stifled. I would honestly prefer a 442 than what we played the last two games. A 4141 might do a better job too.Anyone thoughts on this? 4-4-2 was not far off what we played though it was more 4-2-4. I think 4-3-3 with Rooney on the left or out of the side

foolsgold
For me, we were completely overrun in midfield, we were screaming for Carrick to just hold as an anchorman, rather than Gerrard and/or Henderson there. Also, Sturridge, stay in the fecking middle. I can see what they were trying to do with his fluidity but too often he just had the ball on the wing and was unable to do anything with it. I think 4-3-3 with Rooney on the left or out of the side Given how much we were relying on Baines and Johnson to provide passes I disagree. Also we had no counter-attacking side to our game. I don't see much point in us walking up to the box and then just passing aimlessly until we lose it to the opposition. Loads of teams have played formations that have allowed their strikers to run on to the ball and nick goals. Uruguay and Italy did it to us.

daylight
Rooney is the most overrated player of the decade. Why can't people get off this band wagon? The first game he had to play on the left, not his position by any stretch of the imagination, he set up a goal with a great cross that got England back into the game. The second game he scored a great poachers goal to yet again get England back into the game. The guy is a fantastic player but seems to take the weight of the entire England squad on his back. I am sure in 4 years time it will be someone like Barkley that will take the blame for how poor the rest of the team are compared to him.

Bracken
What Gerrard did was the worst possible option. Either don't compete and trust your centre backs (Jagielka's not world class, but he'd usually deal with those) or direct that flick anywhere other than straight through your defence. It's not the mistakes that I have a problem with from Gerrard, everyone makes them, it's his all round performances which haven't been good enough, and his reaction to both goals, which in the first half was to play very poorly, and in the second was to try and make up for it himself and neglect his duties to the team. Personally, I think we've spent most of Gerrard's career trying to fit him into the team in ways that mostly have been detrimental to the overall performance. Either we should've built the team around him, or we should've used the more specialist players we had in their best positions, even if that meant dropping Gerrard.
