We gave a good showing of ourselves in the State Championship and carried that form in to Serie C to finish top of the first stage and playing well. I was confident going in to the Second Stage but for one reason or another our form dropped off a cliff! Funnily enough I played the last 5 games today and the rest last night so make of that what you will, I must also admit I've not been a fan of the lower league of Brazil, if someone could explain to me what the Gaucho State Championship is or the point of it, I'd be grateful it will come in handy later on when I return to Brazil. I think with this season finishing in late October it's a good chance for me to move on and find another club as I've really not enjoyed this season and if I'm going to complete this challenge I need to be enjoying it of course.

The State Championships in Brazil have a lot of tradition, but less importance nowadays. Because Brazil is so big there wasnt a national league/cup type of competition until the late 50s and clubs just competed within their own States. They used to take up half the calendar but when Brazil changed the national championship to the traditional league format in 2004 the State Championships lost a lot of dates and are played in the first 3-4 months of the season. They are still somewhat important to supporters as they guarantee bragging rights over local rivals, but some of the bigger clubs just treat it as a pre-season.

Long answer short, it is pointless for this challenge ;)

Atletico Madrid 2034/35

Competitions

La Liga - Results 1    Results 2     League Table

We took over with the club sitting 10th after 13 games and you can see from the results just how bad the side was playing. It took some time to implement my playing style and the January window played a big part in turning the clubs fortunes around. In the end we finished 5th, missing out on 4th place on the last day as Villareal won their game to seal 4th.

Copa Del Ray - Results

A decent run to the semi finals where we just lost out to Barcelona over the 2 legs.

Europa Conference League - Results

A competition we won when in charge of Feyenoord and we managed to win it again with a second club. Atletico should not be competing in this and we proved too strong for every side we faced. The final was our toughest tie against Fiorentina but a nervy 1-0 win sealed us the cup.

Playing Squad

Squad    Transfers

I took over a very unbalanced team and after a busy winter transfer window the side is now starting to take shape. I still have a few players I want to move on and areas of the team I would like to improve. A busy summer ahead awaits us.

Next Season

Improvements are needed as we are still a long way behind 10 in a row winners Real Madrid. We tried to go toe to toe with them on matchday 36 as we were bang in form, only to get hammered 6-0 and this maybe cost us 4th place. But with some new signings I am hopeful of a top 4 finish next season at the very least.

POST 25: Spanish Invasion

Having won the Copa del Rey last time out, this year was all about the league, and perhaps the Champions League if possible.

Surprisingly, after being touted by the media as the favourites to win La Liga, we started well and looked like a competitive team, even though we had quite a few aging stars in the side - Alexander-Arnold, Ramsdale, de Ligt, Joao Felix, etc...

It was actually our international job that was on the ropes, as we started our Nations League campaign with two losses. But with a change in formation, the tide turned quite quickly, and a string of four wins helped us to top our group and advance to the finals stage. This is all group preparation ahead of Euro '36, as the squad gel and take a liking to the tactic I've devised for them.

image.thumb.png.b08ff8fa8519db888462bae9e706001b.png

A similar sort of struggle in our Champions League group, with an early loss to Porto meaning we were playing catch up for most of the matches. But we beat them in the return match, and headed into the final group fixtures level on points but behind in the group. Our big win over didn't end up being that necessary as Porto stumbled and lost to Rennes anyway.

image.png.7a8faaaa9790aafd7a6fc5368582f185.png

By the time we reached the winter break in mid-December, things looked pretty good. Although we aren't top of the league, we are unbeaten and Atletico are about to head into a tough set of fixtures in the new year. So things are looking good for us and our title chances.

image.png.e066dbea9582b2ac9c5902f3a10e011a.png

With lots of emails at the end of the year for so many different awards, found one with my name on it. But it was more my efforts with Mexico, a great team that I left behind nearly 6 months ago!

image.thumb.png.0598e7ad639868fb85007e9a455f29de.png

As we reach the end of the season, the games become tougher and have more hanging over each result.

Were drawn against Chelsea, the holders, in the UCL Quarter Finals. All was looking good, with us holding a 2-1 aggregate lead, until some Norwegian called Erling Haaland popped up with a goal with minutes left to play, extending the game into extra time. Our tired legs hung on for another 30 minutes, and thankfully the penalty gods smiled on us, as Reece James missed his spot kick to send us through to the semi finals.

image.png.1eb20134405782248654f3ad7c7b9347.png

Meanwhile, in the domestic cup competition, we had the completely opposite approach. Resting our first team players throughout the competition, it was a surprise that we made it all the way to the final. But the reserves were no match for Atleti's first team, and in a bit of a drab game, our second XI were unfortunate to not help us to defend our trophy.

image.thumb.png.159998abb2bd9d30c5bbd3ad0584a030.png

What was sadder than that loss was our 32nd league game of the season, significant in it being our first league loss of the campaign, coming oh so close to an invincible season.

Don't know if will ever come this close again across the Big 5 leagues in this save, although PSG have won every title in France since Lille's shock triumph in 2020/21, so there is still some hope.

image.png.40909f442274f317ba482908c4ac5d6d.png

And then there was more heartbreak, as the sky blue of England, aka Manchester City, succeeded in knocking us out of Europe, and actually went on to win the competition. Frustrating that we came so close, but now have to do it all over again.

image.thumb.png.473f159fa789291ebddf6337abacf8bc.png

But not long after, it was confirmed - I had my first Big 5 league title, wrapping La Liga up quite comfortably in the end, with Atletico never coming within 5 points of us after losing a few matches in a row.

image.png.4e6d5107c3fab96de169b9599e941f56.png

Although these things seem broken, they are still satisfying ways to looks back on a rather good season....

image.png.7fe45ca6b94d8e4b367fb2b8dc40abd9.png

And we are up to #10 in the Worldwide HOF, so that's nice.

image.png.e10f3415255e36241168f55c9939d927.png

And in the Nations League finals, we beat France but were then defeated by Spain. But things are looking good for the Euros, with an Englishman being named the best player in the world. So there's all to play for in 12 months time.

image.png.436d027ae60c45fcc847c0ebe6507510.png

Actively looking for a new job over the summer, as have accomplished everything needed to in Spain.

Otherwise, will stay here and see how we do in the Champions League. But if anything decent does open up, I will be jumping ship straight away.

POST 26: One more year

No decent jobs became available over the summer, so I decided to stay at Barcelona and see if we could mount a decent challenge on the Champions League.

But with quite a few key players deciding to retire at the end of the year (mainly de Ligt at the back at Joao Felix on the wing), it really felt like now or never with this squad. Just hoping that there is somewhere to jump ship to next summer.

Things started off nicely again this year, unsurprisingly as we are the media favourites to win the league.

image.png.e9cfd8c1595124967c09f9e6ddb88ff6.png

But we have also dominated our Champions League group, which wasn't supposed to be a walkover, sealing top spot with two game spare.

image.png.97778da3277fbc2636284bf3b4aa2793.png

Meanwhile with 3rd ranked England, we comfortably made it to Euro '36. After losing to Belgium, I worried that the would end up as group winners, but they lost to Greece and Bulgaria before we beat them in the return match to seal our spot in Germany in the summer.

image.png.8239be561be362a245416c363cdb4d12.png

It got to January and still no jobs really have become available (guessing this might annoy me for the rest of the save, now that we are limited in choice as to where we can manage!), so still at Barcelona, and still winning trophies.

image.png.ae625e18227e79e59b5a9f5fc480e9dd.png

Although I haven't recorded each milestone, this one felt like a big one. It's taken nearly 15 years, and 20 odd seasons (given that we've been switching between winter and summer leagues so far). But 1000 games does feel like a big number.

Here's to 1000 more.

image.png.8e3b1740868ef3933ef9456c2d1e7f7d.png

Not got the easiest draw for the Euros, having been put in a draw alongside #1 ranked Spain (who didn't have the best qualifying campaign and thus weren't in Pool 1) and Belgium, who we qualified against.

Thankfully, our first group match will be the easy fixture of Russia, a nice way to warm up.

image.png.3e69e6cb2a23548e8beb338cfb0ab69a.png

And then we got drawn against Spain again in our upcoming Nations League group. Just no luck with the FM gods there for me.

image.thumb.png.a0060b51d3bb7bbb1deeb1c2dbb97521.png

The season with Barca was pretty uneventful. We were running away with the league, although the gap did fall to just 6 points in one gameweek.

I was playing the reserves in the Copa del Rey, and they made it all the way to the semi finals.

The Champions League, however, that was a bit dramatic. After dispatching both Milan (5-2 agg) and Southampton (5-0 agg), we were up against Juve in the semi finals.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg, we looked to be going through after going 2-0 up with 25 minutes in the second leg at home. But they pulled one back before half time, and then found the net again with under 10 minutes to go. Thought the match would be taken to extra time, but Barriere managed to score with seconds left of added time to seal the victory and send us through to the final....

image.png.8911796633454fbcf1f7da23ac1d6576.png

...where we would face Manchester City, a side that would be featuring in their 4th UCL final in 5 years, going for a third title in that time. They would take some beating.

I still really want to leave at the end of the season, but after getting this email, I had second thoughts. Went to actually check how you qualify for the CWC, and apparently UCL finalists all qualify, so will try and coordinate a move accordingly. Definitely part of the challenge to plot a route to all the trophies.

image.thumb.png.f87f345d16882b2a7b8b209cb6e61850.png

A bit anticlimactic, but an email just popped up that we won the league. Apparently Real Madrid had drawn and with 3 games to go, could no longer catch us at the top, sealing La Liga once more for the Catalan side.

image.thumb.png.72de62f3eab11c6235aff0b57ed62697.png

Ended up winning it fairly comfortably. Looks like Madrid gave up after that. Just annoyed we didn't quite make it to 100 points or a +100 goal difference.

image.png.a548458280bb72f7f519aca6a47ae2fd.png

The TOTY sums up the season of the whole league, with our solid back line being the key to our dominance.

image.png.f95bcd32dedd0c8481bc8c6a541c4aec.png

And it was only after seeing this award that I realised that apparently Gary Neville has returned to management in La Liga, coming back from broadcasting to manage Real Valladolid this time.

image.png.9896afe61e9a3636d2eb1c036bcbd3db.png

And then our England side was dealt a huge blow ahead of the Euros when Best Player in the World Jukka Peltonen was ruled out of the tournament. Thankfully we are not a one man team, and the squad can still put in a good performance.

image.thumb.png.f70c68747dc70d216ee6dfa7c296a571.png

And then it was time for the big match.

A bit of a backs against the wall performance. We scored early and then sat back. But it looked like we were going to lose when they scored a second goal in the 88th minute, only for Benjamin Sesko to hit an instant reply.

Extra time was a bit tame as both teams tired and the match went to dreaded penalties.

Although we missed with our 3rd kick, we didn't even need to take our 5th as they missed their last three to hand us the title!!!

image.png.f47969209ae1a325549b9cacdceed34d.png

image.png.f2661bdce9f2e85096bae469ab02aa47.png

Won some more awards as a result, building my European street cred.

image.png.6cfc29b39b35a1ef775949d2d2d7bcfa.png

And there we are, sat at the edge of Euro '36, having just won the Champions League in a 5th continent.

Feels like the hard work is over, but it really isn't. The challenge actually gets harder from here. Some French jobs became available, but apparently PSG have won the title every year since Lille won it back in 2020/21, so that's going to be hard. England is always a struggle as there are so many teams and the money is so high. Germany is also a one team dominance, although Hertha Berlin are now the biggest challengers to that.

So not sure where we go from here. But this Barca team is kinda falling apart, and I very much plan on jumping ship.

Until next time.

Season 2033/34 - Cruz Azul FC

The team was predicted to come 2nd and the board expectation was to pretty much make the final of everything available. The league started off well then we hit a bit of an inconsistent patch whilst trying to balance the fitness of all comps. In the end we finished second in the first stage table. Up against Tijuana away in the quarters, a 91st minute equaliser denied us the win, at home we smashed them 4 - 1.  Monterrey next away in the semis, again a 1 - 1 away draw in a bit of a borefest, we smashed them 5 - 1 in the home leg.  This put us up against Pachuca and again away in the first leg.  This time we smashed 4 - 1 to all but seal the opening stage final.

The closing stage we finished 4th as we were focusing on other competitions as we already have the league ticked for this challenge. We ended up winning the final however it was much tougher than the opening stage.  At home first against Pachuca we conceded in the 90th minute to lose 2 - 1.  However we wont the away leg 4 - 2 to seal it.

The Mexican Cup was a disappointment getting knocked out in the quarters by Chivas away 4 - 2. Not a great performance by any stretch

The NACL was a personal objective as it would mean I would have conquered 3 continental champions league in the space of 2.5 seasons. In the Group Zone we were paired up against 2 other Mexican teams and 2 MLS teams which were much chop. We won our first 3 games convincingly and with Chivas and us equal top on maximum points, the match between ourselves was going to decide who topped the group (although it didnt count for much apart from bragging rights).  We got demolished 3 - 0 despite fielding a strong team).  They really were becoming a nuisance to me!   In the second round we were lucky enough to escape a Mexican team and were paired up against Montreal, 6 - 0 over two legs.  And wouldnt you know it, that meant we got Chivas in the quarters!  First game away, we J Franco scored a first half brace to give Chivas a 2 - 0 lead into half time.  We did not turn up at all and after throwing a waterbottle and changing the formation we looked a little better in the second half but still stunk it up until Saldana our leading goalscorer popped in with a vital 91st minute away goal! A moment of brilliance lifted the mood coming back in front of our home supporters for the second leg. At home we dominated but couldnt find that elusive goal until the 56th minute which put us ahead on away goals.  We sealed the win with a 93rd minute counter attack to make the semis.  Up against Tigres away, a 9th minute red card for us put us on the back foot however we managed to score the first in the 25th minute to that man again Saldana.  He had a second denied by VAR in the 48th minute.  It looked like we were going to hold on but they managed to equalise in the 80th minute, a result i took graciously as they created a number of chances against our 10 men! At home we won 3 - 1 to make the final against America which for some reason was played at our home stadium. We totally dominated the game but only managed 1 goal in the 16th minute to you know who which was enough to become champions as we restricted them to only 3 shots for the full game!

With Norway we have the World Cup upcoming next but Haaland fractured his leg and might not be able to make it in time! Hopes are dashed!

Still cant seem to upload my images for some reason, any assistance would be greatly appreciated!  (apologies about the plain text paste, its the only way i could include it)

Hi. For some reason your username doesn't appear if I just type @ and then Skills. How weird.

Anyway, posting screenshots. I ust drag them from my screenshots folder into the drag files here box at the bottom of posts. Of course the difficult thing is finding that screenshots folder. For instance mine is located at

Quote

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\57742474\760\remote\1569040\screenshots"

But once you've located it, you can just add a shortcut to your desktop.

As for the plain text, it works best if you use a txt file and pop it in the code box at the top of the post. Do your formatting in the txt file. Don't try to make things line up in these posts.

I thought you were already on the leader board. When I've woken up I'll come up with a meme, as it my affectation in these matters.

What was your 10th achievement?

Ah, figured it out. I'll give you a Brazilian, as it were.

Update: OK. I've just stolen somebody else's stereotypical joke.

POST 27: Euro '36

We head into Euro '36 without our best player, injured in the build up to the tournament too severely to even be a part of the squad. Very frustrating indeed.

And this is also probably the last time we will have any real players in the squad, with captain Declan Rice retiring after the tournament, and Jadon Sancho and Reece James just being squad players at this point. How time flies. Harvey Elliot is one of the last still there with a real face!

The xG is where to look for our first two games of the tournament, with a predicted 6 goals across the two matches. Although we did beat Russia 3-0, the Belgium match was slightly more tense at only 1-0, but we were so dominant throughout the 90 minutes. And it meant that we headed into our final group game with Spain level on points with them but ahead on goal difference, knowing that a draw would see us top the group.

image.thumb.png.a16e9c5bb06dc635aac023f69bdfd915.png

image.thumb.png.c1743cae9a99b01922a0d03c05042eae.png

And I got the tactics slightly wrong at the start, allowing them some early chances. But things were changed pretty quickly, and it resulted in a close match for the remainder. Nothing to separate between two of the top three teams in the world, and we both advance through to the knockout stages unbeaten.

image.thumb.png.526a61e16819d9f026cb2c138f26a06a.png

We started things off with an easy fixture against Turkey. They never really had any chances on goal, but the scoreline doesn't tell the proper story of the match as we scored twice in the last five minutes.

Although we were fairly untroubled, need to improve our shooting. But at least this time out we saw off our opponents within the 90 minutes.

image.thumb.png.5494bf3e254a316366ce67c2e4de43e9.png

Next up were Italy, and again we failed to really make our chances count. But they never really had opportunities at our goal and it was about as comfortable a win as 1-0 can be.

image.png.361d1f669192b2aa71a3e9d13ed0442a.png

We were then privileged to face Iceland in the semi finals, the team that knocked out holders Portugal.

But their wave of good luck was ended pretty swiftly as we brushed them aside with a dominant performance, that included a hat trick from Ishmael Guy. Through to the final!

image.png.b101586f7323b9ae82c4e1bf998c8666.png

The final was a disappointment as far as finals go. Not many chances for either side throughout the 90 minutes, but we managed to take one of ours just before half time.

That was enough to separate the two sides and means that England win Euro '36!!!!

Although I still need to win the Copa America, going to stay with England for now and see if I can do something decent at the World Cup. This team are one of the best in the world (presumably because FM is so England focussed), and I think we have a real chance of lifting silverware again in two years time. But will see what happens after that.

For now it is on to the Nations League, and to see if we can do better than we did last time out.

And domestically, I have run down my contract at Barcelona, having won everything there. Looking for another job in a Big 5 League has been a total failure.

So instead I am heading to the Netherlands.

Ajax have been knocked off of their perch. Having won 16 of the past 17 league titles, they failed to win it last season and duly sacked their manager. They are a decent team and should have no problems winning the Eredivisie once more.  The only down side to this move is that the Club World Cup is next summer and we qualified for it with Barca. But I don't believe the squad right now is good enough to win it, and I don't want to spend the summer rebuilding that whole team only to leave it after the CWC.

@vikeologist had to be creative as Skills was taken so I use two capital i's to replace the 'L' if that makes sense

Quick update to say that i resigned as manager of Cruz Azul and will look to head to Europe next.  On the international front, the World Cup with Norway was a strange one, Ajer decided to retire on 30th June which was half way through the tournament which meant I could not include him in the squad... what the???   Haaland was coming back from a fractured leg and was going to miss the Group games and a bucket load of my best players from winning the Euro Nations League had also retired.  The two lead up games to the tourny were against Marrocco which we lost 3 - 2 and South Korea which we lost 3 - 0.  This definitely grounded my expectations.  Group games were against Cost Rica which we drew 0 - 0 which meant a draw would be enough to get us through against Tunisia.  We finally clicked in the second half to win 3 - 0.  We were paired with Senegal in the sound round...

Second Round

Spoiler

our best performance for a while which coincided with Haaland's return winning 4 - 0.  Up next is Portugal in the 3rd round, slightly lifted expectation after this performance

Third Round (if applicable)

Portugal 4 - Norway 0 yikes!

Semi Final (if applicable)

Final (if applicable)

USA beat Wales on penalties.  Wales knocked out France 4 - 1 in the quarters and then Brazil 2 - 1 in the semi...  what a strange result!

POST 28: Living the life in Amsterdam

No pressure on us this year as Ajax look to us to return the Eredivisie to where it belongs.

And from my point of view, I don't want to be in the Netherlands for too long. So hopefully we can get the job done, win some trophies, and get out fast.

The squad is decent, and are predicted to win the league. And that's before I even make any transfers. So the pressure is definitely on to get these boys firing.

Things started interestingly, signing some guy named van Dijk as my assistant manager. He's Dutch, and apparently used to play in defence. Hope he knows something about football as well.

image.png.b96431eca25608b5f389bfd0c7b4e8fc.png

We took the early bragging rights against the defending league champions, beating Feyenoord in the season opening match. Praying that it's a sign of what's to come.

image.thumb.png.165c619e107ff61ceccea59ff86cbaff.png

And by November, things are going good. Top of the league (just), yet to enter the cup. But are struggling in our Champions League group.

Meanwhile with England, we topped our Nations League group, even though we managed to lose home and away against Turkey. There really are some strange results in FM.

image.png.c76f0e47ae4e359b0a7c94dd9463a6a0.png

We didn't have the hardest of UCL groups. but with one game remaining, we were languishing at the bottom having only taken 3 points from 5 matches. Our European adventure was over too soon, having had to make it through two qualifying rounds to make the group stage.

image.thumb.png.633011b14565d6134571673c9b651557.png

Things are looking good for England for the World Cup, especially after being handed an easy qualifying group. Should be able to keep up the tradition and make it through unbeaten.

image.thumb.png.1a833cb6d3e09f149cb504b486a666e6.png

And return Ajax to winning ways we did, cruising to the title with ease. Defending champions Feyenoord were nowhere to be seen (having also finished bottom of their Champions League group) and it was Willem II that brought up the chase.

image.png.089194520d3d5d3a73dfc2b177a74840.png

image.thumb.png.dba4b37d543b3ce3851e2dbeaee27965.png

More importantly, we managed to also win the Toto Beker, completing the Netherlands in just one season. So already starting to look for that next club.

image.thumb.png.1921d5d26be8422dd56e235a81160882.png

image.thumb.png.49f798a7eb6386e55728dd7becb9286f.png

Very lucky that this opportunity presented itself, as Ajax just underperformed in the previous season. The squad was already in place to dominate domestically, and I just added a loanee from Manchester City because we got him cheap, and an aging goalkeeper that I had at Tigres. Otherwise it was just about keeping the squad rotated and staying match sharp, which got easier once we were knocked out of European football.

We then were went straight to managing England at the Nations League finals, whilst monitoring what jobs were available....

Won our semi final comfortably, taking control of the game before half time.

But weren't able to get our hands on the trophy, as Germany took their chance whilst we were wasteful in front of goal. But hopefully the players learn from this before the World Cup next summer.

And then the dream England job appeared, so we applied, had an interview and were moving before we knew it.

Although I'm a life long Manchester United fan, the riches of this City side were just too tempting that I couldn't turn it down.

And the best thing, which I only found out after trying to arrange some pre-season friendlies, is that I've taken charge just days before the Club World Cup, which City have qualified for.

It seems like the stars have aligned just perfectly.

And the squad is really good.

Massimiliano Allegri knows what he is doing, having led the team to the title last season, their fifth in a row, before retiring as the most successful manager ever. In total with City he won 11 Premier League titles, 4 Champions League titles and both domestic cups 5 times.

The squad is insanely good, and should also dominate England this year.

So the plan is to not be in England too long, before finding a job in France, Italy or Germany. Will see how that goes!

Having settled a score with Syria who some how eliminated us 4 years ago in the same competition we faced a strong china side in the semi's in a game we fell behind early in. However we were not to be denied our place in the final and after levelling just before the break we managed to expose china's high line to knock in another 3 to make it 4-1.

South Korea the favorites for the final and who have been the strongest of the Asian nations in game for sometime and have won the last 3 Asian cups.

How I won this game I am not to sure, After the first ten minutes I was contemplating launching the laptop into the wall. My young hot headed centre midfielder decided to go in with a 2 footed lunge after 5 minutes and get sent off to ruin all the tactical plans I had laid out prior to the match.

Following the sending off I spent 5-10 minutes re jigging and settled on a narrow 4-4-1 to keep things as tight as possible with my star left winger Rideout to get fwd and add support when we could counter..... he immediately got injured and had to come off within 3 mins of the re shuffle.

My keeper had to play his part at times but we were never under any real siege or period of wave after wave of attacks as I had feared would happen and we managed to keep Korea largely at bay.

Australia attacks were few and far between with our main outlet up front quite isolated... however... we managed to break the dead lock on the 74th Minute when a free kick was whipped in from the right hand side and caused chaos in the Korea box as the ball was nodded into the danger area with the unfortunate defender turning the ball into his own net when trying to clear.

The final 16 minutes + injury time was real brown pants time and our keeper had to pull off 2 smart stops to keep us in front.. but we held on to capture the Asian cup and the final trophy required to complete THE ULTIMATE FM CHALLENGE! 32/32

WHATS NEXT

I might get round to buying fm22 at some point now!

In all seriousness it may have taken me longer than anyone to complete the challenge on fm21 but I don't really care, very happy to have got it done. It has take me over a year playing it on and off ( plus my first child came along in October).

I nearly came close to quitting once when in china as the rules were just driving me mad but kept with it and glad I did. Having played the game every year cm/fm from 93' I think this has been the challenge that has put me through the mill more than any other.

I would like to thank @vikeologist for his knowledge and help throughout :applause:

@berrers Congratulations on completing. It does take a tremendous amount of bloody-mindedness to do. So relieved for you that you won that final.  A year is pretty much the norm for completing, I think, but we did have a record number of people complete on FM21. Up to 8 now.

I hope @SK is inspired by your success and comes back and finishes the challenge, having got so close.

FIRST SEASON - 2021/22

I promise I started as unemployed, no coaching badges. I do not have any documentation of this, as when I started, I had initially only intended for the save to be a beta save.

Now going back, I realize that this save had a significant amount of potential (if I could handle the finances well enough) and all steps for setup were followed except, of course, to document it.

Won our semi final comfortably, taking control of the game before half time.

image.thumb.png.b55a4dd31809756cd6a80a8425996af6.png

But weren't able to get our hands on the trophy, as Germany took their chance whilst we were wasteful in front of goal. But hopefully the players learn from this before the World Cup next summer.

image.png.fe2d858471e7bc57b978c348ab19a3ea.png

And then the dream England job appeared, so we applied, had an interview and were moving before we knew it.

Although I'm a life long Manchester United fan, the riches of this City side were just too tempting that I couldn't turn it down.

POST 29: Ticking them off

This Man City squad is quite strong. Just thankful the timing worked out, and Allegri retired when he did, right before the Club World Cup.

Drawn in a group with Al-Hilal and Marseille, and we had over 60% possession in both, scoring 9 times in the process.

Now have a bit of a rest whilst they have to play each other. (Really not a fan of these three team groups.)

image.png.c61a8fa96f57ba4ba6ad1b002d8bc92b.png

Apparently striker Dario Alarcon is an absolute beast, and he led the line superbly and being clinical in his finishing. Scoreline doesn't quite reflect the way the match went, as they scored in the 91st minute.

image.thumb.png.8dac01302fb19cfd60bc5fd7b3ce3853.png

My main worry in these tournaments is always fitness, and this game was so kind to us. We were 3-0 up within 30 minutes, so spent the next hour on a low-tempo high-time-wasting tactic to see out the game and keep our legs fresh for the final.

quick update - some juicy opportunities became available post the World Cup and was offered Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and South Korea jobs all on the same day.  I went with South Korea given the Asian Cup was scheduled in the coming January.

On the club front, waited a little while and not much was coming up, Roma came and went, Atletico i applied for but as i was holidaying week by week apparently i missed the boat to be considered, RB Leipzig didnt give me an interview so landed with Lazio who were struggling in 12th.

Asian Cup 2035 - South Korea

Hopes are high going into the Asian Cup after some impressive lead up games where we beat Argentina 7 - 0 and my previous national coaching team Norway 5 - 1.

A group consisting our neighbours North Korea, Australia and Oman was going to make for an interesting start.  Up against Oman and Nth Korea first up where comfortable 3 - 0 and 6 - 0 wins put us through to the knockout stage.  First real test of the tourny against Australia where we outplayed the Aussies and two second half goals put us ahead for only a late consolation goal made the result look closer than it really was.  Second Round we face Kuwait

Second Round

Spoiler

probably our best performance to date in the tournament winning 6 - 0.  Qatar in the quarters

Quarter Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

another easy win 5 - 1 despite conceding first. Surprise packet Thailand in the semis

Semi Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

we conceded the first two goals of the match with their first shots in the 19th minute and 31st minute.  We scored 2 goals in 2 minutes to bring us level just before half time.  We got the go ahead goal just after the break but that only lasted 1 minute with Thailand equalising in the 49th minute.  I cant believe whats happening.  A red card to us in the 81st minute put us on the back foot and things were looking desperate!  End of 90 minutes and we're going into extra time.  We conceded a penalty in the 112th minute but much to my delight we were given a penalty in the 118th minute to take the game into penalties.  We missed our first two penalties and ended up losing.

Somehow I wasnt sacked despite minimum expectation was to win the Cup

Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

Thailand beat Japan to become champions in extra time.  Somehow they have some really gun regens!

POST 30: Back in England

We were here before for a few months with Leicester, but now we are properly back in England with Manchester City, looking to keep going what Allegri started.

And start well we do, taking the early bragging rights with a not so comfortable win over Liverpool. Not much happened throughout and the players did the job from the penalty spot.

image.png.6e229ef1441c000f3a3c1712c1ddc3b9.png

Things going along nicely, as we sit top of the league. Only early disappointment really is that we were drawn against Manchester United in the League Cup. Wasn't keen to name a full strength team for the match and we duly went and lost it. Not a disaster as also have the FA Cup, but with such a good team, would be nice to win both the league and a cup whilst here.

With England, we have qualified comfortably for the World Cup, with a 100% record in a group that didn't challenge us at all. Lets see what the European champions can do on the global stage!

image.thumb.png.57ad5a3f83b3aff6c9d4a4305a5fe9bd.png

Not the easiest group for 2037, with Hertha Berlin top of the Bundesliga and Marseille in a title race in France. But nice to have qualified easily, even being able to rotate for the last couple of group matches.

image.thumb.png.1d597dabb208844ba9e50d2074896e7e.png

Not quite sure how these awards are dished out (yes, I know they get voted for). But I have won this now for four years in a row, and only really deserved it for the year that we won the Euros....

image.thumb.png.a0c1de3ec2e12ace717b31588a139cab.png

We were pushed most of the way to this title by Arsenal, so it was fitting that we sealed it, and kept City's winning streak going, by beating the Gunners.

Also a good morale booster before facing them again in the FA Cup.

image.thumb.png.6eeb1395e75c6c9731879b436624fd8e.png

Seems like we have developed a bogey team already in our nearest rivals, as Manchester United also knocked us out of the Champions League, going through 2-1 agg. in the Quarter Finals after we dismantled AC Milan.

But Arsenal weren't so lucky, and after maintaining our league form, we went into the cup final with confidence, and came away with the trophy. Another tight game, but another one that we edged.

image.thumb.png.b1c7699f3c2deecfef0cd873f8bb52df.png

Annoyed in the end, as we were so close to that elusive 100 point mark. Arsenal did fall away quite a bit after we beat them, winning just one of their last 4 games.

image.png.0850be0d188f0c432be4a6be999abad9.png

Proudly won the UEFA Best Coach award, and when looking through its history, realised that this is my fourth time winning it, each time with a different club. Makes me realise how far I've come, from the days of managing Terengganu without any coaching badges to taking charge of the biggest clubs in world football.

image.png.f059de26badf135f5d0e3e469b0ce968.png

Seeing as we have won the league and cup, I'm already looking around for my next move.

Lucky that Allegri retired and left behind such a good side for us to inherit. But at the moment, not really found any good openings in France, Italy or Germany. Apparently Julian Nagelsmann is still in charge of Bayern, having taken the job in 2020, 18 years ago.

Will have to do some multi tasking over the next few weeks, as also need to focus on winning this World Cup with England, whilst they are still so good at #3 in the world.

Results: Serie C ~ Gaucho State Championship ~ Copa do Brasil

So after being adamant I was leaving at the end of last season, there wasn't really a job out there that tickled my fancy so decided to give it one more shot. We just missed out on the play-offs in the Gaucho State Championship, but we made the second stage of Serie C although less comfortably than last season. In the second stage one team ran away with it which ruined it for us as they went on to lose their last two games which they'd of normally won and we'd of qualified for promotion (I think). We had a stronger side than last season and for some reason or another it just didn't help we seemed to drop points just in the most crucial matches which made it quite frustrating. I will most certainly look to move on this time around as the board are refusing me any more coaching badges in the fear that I'll leave and they're not interested in offering me a new contract.

ATLETICO GOIANIENSE - 2024

Club Overview ~ Competition Overview ~ Squad Overview ~ Finances

So it took us over 2 months to find a new job and thankfully we finally fell on our feet, I was looking in to China and Brazil mostly. China as I felt easiest way in to a job already in a top league, but also I didn't mind progressing in Brazil if I could get a job in the league above and we managed to get a job at the favourites of the Serie B this season so that is a great next step in this challenge. Also in the past I always holidayed and auto applied for jobs to get through quicker, but manually searching for jobs is much more satisfying than letting the game do it for you.

@Crowy Congrats on the new job.

Did you find (or do you think) that one can get better jobs when you apply yourself, rather than auto-applying?

My perception is that you can, but that's based on having played this challenge (or had to apply for jobs) rarely recently,

I think you can probably get slightly better jobs from it as you cut out applying for all the extremely poor jobs and only apply for jobs that you aim for. I think when auto applying some people take slightly worse jobs just to get back in to management instead of being thorough and being patient for the right job. It will also depend on where you manged previously I think, I couldn't get a job in League Two of England where the clubs had 1 and a half to 2 star reputations but abroad a few 2 and a half / 3 star clubs approached me.

POST 31: World Cup 2038

After a successful season back in England, it's now time to turn our attention to manage England as we travel to South Africa for the World Cup as reigning European champions. Hopefully that stands us in good stead and gives the team the sufficient morale to go all the way. And we are ranked 2nd in the world going into the tournament.

Drawn in a group with DR Congo and Japan, we dispatched of both of them with considerable ease. We topped our group before the two of them even met in a decider for second spot.

image.thumb.png.8144dcd1fbd65642e3a4e3b350e10d59.png

image.thumb.png.a5910d24c3f2a3a5c3f2575d28a2fc85.png

Next up were the hosts, runners up of Group A, and they too were ruthlessly brushed aside by a unit growing in confidence in this tournament with every 90 minutes of football played.

image.thumb.png.65fba7279e9bec857f7880339955066d.png

Our first real test then followed, against neighbours France. It was a tight and tense affair, and the two sides were really only separated by Kain Dodds' wonder strike from outside the box halfway through the second half.

image.thumb.png.503f73e2ce7ada7213956361cd3d8240.png

Expected another tough match in the next round too, this time up against Belgium.

But the tie was turned early when their winger was sent off inside 10 minutes. We were 2-0 up by half time, and able to relax the intensity for the second half, as well as take off key players.

Could have been 4-0 if a penalty hadn't been hit straight at their keeper.

image.thumb.png.b48de73179c5e744920d4839a618198e.png

But our game plan came unstuck against bitter old rivals Germany in the semi final.

They went 2-0 up. I changed the tactic, and it looked to be working as we pulled a goal back. But they quickly scored another and I realised that the game was up. We wouldn't even make it to the World Cup final.

image.thumb.png.fb888acfb170061a32a5d72e82e9e33b.png

Our dreams are shattered and going to have to go to Russia in four years and try again.

Germany overtake us in the rankings as we drop to 3rd. But the squad isn't that old, and should mainly have the same squad in four years time.

Going to stick around with England until 2042, as better to stick with this team than take over a South American side and hoping they have the talent. Will look to move down there after the 2042 tournament, whether we end up winning it or not.

Frustrating that didn't get this one ticked off. But nice to know that I'll be sticking around for another few years and not have to go job hunting anytime soon and go through the faff off setting up a whole other nation's set up from scratch.

Atletico Madrid 2035/36

Competitions

La Liga - League Table    Results 1    Results 2

The aim this season was to secure a top 4 finish so to be in with a chance of winning the title going into the final day was a massive achievement. We did out part but Real Madrid thumped Villareal 6-1 on the final day to seal their 11th title in a row.

Copa Del Rey - Results

Another run to the semi finals where we faced Real Madrid and they was just too good for us.

Europa League - Results

I really wanted to win this and thought we had a great chance. To lose to RB Leipzig was a real disappointment.

Playing Squad

Squad    Transfers

We have built a brilliant side here who are only going to get better. I have bought in some really talented youngsters over the past season and a half and if they can keep developing, I think this side is capable of going onto great things. Key men this season were:

Djoukalou Fofana (CB) - The CB has been nothing short of sensational this season. Immense at the back and chipped in with 13 goals this season.

Mauro Sanchez (ST) - The Mexican had a brilliant season. He missed 2 months with injury but still managed 44 goals in 35 starts.

Jose Sanchez (RW) - We had him at Feyenoord and when I saw he was available it was a no brainer. An absolute baller and he managed 8 goals and 29 assists in 35 starts.

I also want to show you this kid:

Jaoquin Badia (CB) - Has to be one of the best 16 year olds I have seen on any edition of FM.

Next Season

I think we have a great chance of winning something next season. For all of Madrids dominance their key men are all coming to the back ends of their careers and will have to slow down eventually. We have a year remaining on our contract and are still on the lookout for an international job.

POST 32: Staying until I move

Now that we've won the league and a cup with Man City, I'm looking to move on. But with no decent jobs around, sticking with the Citizens for the time being. But I will jump ship as soon as a decent team in one of the other leagues becomes available.

And after a bunch of friendlies with no players there as they were still at the world cup, they were back in time for the Community Shield, and another chance to beat rivals Arsenal.

image.png.63849abe3531e50d71425e5ebeb0769d.png

Another dramatic Nations League group stage with England. We were cruising along, winning our first 4 matches. But 1 point from our last 2 games meant the final standings make it look a lot closer than it was for most of it. Have different opponents for the Finals this time around, as we are joined by France, Spain and Wales.

image.thumb.png.05ae5a8664752ffb26491a3bdda13fb1.png

And the draw for the Euro Qualies cames through, and it looks like we should make it to the tournament to defend our title.

image.thumb.png.a215ba8dc05b68fa51f12e26f23a0f12.png

I decided to put out strong teams in the League Cup to try and win the one trophy we didn't win last year. But Everton outplayed us in the Quarters, and that dream is over unfortunately.

image.thumb.png.b725e9d75949e87dd630aa1c361b72fa.png

As the new year came around, a job too good to turn down became available.

A manager left the team top of Serie A to join 14th placed Everton! (Some manager moves in FM just make no sense.)

image.png.b505ee612d40a0289065506f2050c348.png

But it looks like our time at City is up, as the Italian outfit want us to come and take over.....

...and we have become the new manager of AC Milan.

image.thumb.png.0e125b927016dcd2fe9381b86ed5daa4.png

Not only are they top by a point in Serie A, but they got out of the Champions League group and are still in the Coppa Italia.

Everything is still to play for, and our time in Italy could be a short one.

But one game in, we drew, and we have already lost top spot. Oh it is tight at the top.

image.png.6500bbce2849e18f241763eb565b495e.png

And as the season rolls on, us and Juve have pulled away from Inter in third.

Before we have to play them in the league, we got one over them by dumping them out of the Champions League!

image.thumb.png.decd325836268a2b9ed51f6a4e38ec65.png

The race was still tight with just 5 games to play. And with basically identical fixtures, the jury is out on how this season will end.

image.thumb.png.83a3f1b1d2db6a53283bfb46dd496cf3.png

The timing was terrible for our Juve game though, as it was between our Champions League semi final legs. Maybe we should have let them win after all!

Went too conservative in the first leg with Chelsea to keep the players fresh for the league clash. And losing 3-0 in London was too much of a deficit to overcome back at the San Siro.

image.thumb.png.4842da9bedede5d70ecff315d14dbef1.png

And in the end, we managed to stay ahead of Juventus, sealing the title by a point and dethroning a team that won this title in 24 of the previous 27 seasons.

Very happy how it all worked out, being patient and waiting for the perfect job to come available.

The Coppa Italia wasn't such a success either. Will try again next year, but will move on if the right job comes about, because now need just to win the league in Germany and France, and Bayern and PSG have both basically won every season of the save.

image.thumb.png.ad5481193bfbde5c600ae2267fb8bd01.png

The Nations League finals didn't go to plan though. Again.

We didn't even make the final this time, being punished for not taking our chances.

image.png.18781395231f5457e254cffcd5d2f8b7.png

Now we head into pre season with Milan and see what happens.

New Job

Appointment

I have landed a new role on the international stage. Ranked 6th in the world, England were knocked out of this summers Euros in the 2nd round by Turkey and therefore sacked the manager. I still need a Euros and a World cup win so this job gives me the chance of a crack at both. We have a Nations League group stage this Autumn/Winter consisting of Holland, Croatia and Israel. Holland are ranked as the 2nd best side in the world so that will be a tough 2 games and a real test of where we are. With 2 years until the next World Cup and the F.A not seeing the Nations League as important, I have a good amount of time to shape a squad.

Quick update on half a season with Lazio in 2034/2035, took the team over when they were 12th midway in January with little funds to invest and all foreign positions taken, the clear focus was to build for the following season.  Much to my surprise, the team performed well above expectations and we managed to seal 4th spot with 2 games to go.  Lots of late winners and 1 - 0 wins were attributable to my somewhat more defensive tactics of 4-1-2-2-1.

We were knocked out on penalties to local rivals Roma in the quarters away so no luck there.

We were still in the Europa league which we ended up beating Newcastle 2 - 0 AET which was a nice little bonus.  So overall a very positive start to my career at Lazio. Hopefully we're in a position to challenge Juve and the Milan teams for the title next season.

Quick overview of my season as expected we got promoted, we did start to run out of steam towards the end as I ended up with only 2 CB's  as players were harder to replace than I realised in Brazil! We managed a "Treble" winning State Championship as well as a cup that only lower league teams enter so nothing towards the challenge, I have my eye on a couple of jobs if they become available but teams refusing me coaching courses as it will lead me to leaving for better clubs is becoming a little bit of an issue. Ideally I'll stay in Brazil as the amount of games is so high I'd like to get this section out of the way. I'm also going to start looking at international jobs too, was hoping to have better badges by now but I'll work with what I have.

POST 33: Leaving already?

Having won the league, was preparing myself for a season with AC Milan where Serie A would be the least of our priorities and would instead focus on the Coppa Italia as well as try win the Champions League again.

But whilst going through preseason, the Borussia Dortmund manager left to join Juventus. As they were the favourites to win the Bundesliga I thought it was a no brainer to join them and end my stint at the San Siro already.

image.thumb.png.c4ac8dcf7489e83e96de04d5d229147b.png

Bayern have finally gone two years without winning the league, so it was Hertha Berlin that were our opponents in the Supercup, and they were no match for our formidable side.

image.png.c91ddb28d0b785b340117e3ca3a27ffc.png

Didn't even realise that this Dortmund side were so good that they are the defending Champions League champions.

Took on another surprise winner, the Europa League holders Lens. Taking place at the world renowned St Mary's Stadium, two matches into my time in Germany and we've picked up two trophies!

image.thumb.png.9aba58d78b8122ec5b107f325a602802.png

Things were going along well for us in the league.

Udur Yildrim is the best impact sub I've ever had on Football Manager, and striker Najim Kuijpers is superb up front.

And the England side is also still pretty legendary, with winger Yukka Peltonen of Juventus the pick of the bunch.

Easily won our qualifying group, and we will be there to defend our Euro crown in the summer.

image.thumb.png.bf00a044816235442ad661a1aa6918f0.png

Don't normally show individual games, but this was a crazy one.

We were 2-0 down inside 20 minutes, and they scored to make it 3-1 as we entered added time at the end of the match.

But goals in the 91st and 94th minutes salvaged a point for us, somehow.

image.thumb.png.6189821110deebbba541f5469e0d07ea.png

And then we had the draw for the Euros, where the FM gods were not smiling down on us. Feel bad for Montenegro, as they are in a group with 3 top-10 sides. Madness.

image.thumb.png.ccb2e4ff5ba8fe29918cb5949becbad4.png

In the UCL semi finals, were playing Juventus. Were 3-1 down from first leg, but were level with over an hour to play in the second.

They had a late chance to win the tie from the penalty spot, but failed to take the chance.

Game went to extra time, where our super sub got himself sent off. Then their pressure told and they managed to score.

Really disappointed as got so far and played so well.

image.thumb.png.3fca840a9b67166739e1109820885db8.png

But we won the league with a game to spare, especially as we were scheduled to face Bayern on the final day.

Were pushed by them for most of the season.

Meant that couldn't also try to win the cup, as had to rest players for the league matches.

A bit annoying really.

image.png.1699b9b08c831ab14d58aaa51cc53ed1.png

In Euro '40, we started with a nice 9-0 win over Montenegro. But 0-0 draws with both France and Portugal meant we finished our group in second. And the disappointing thing with the tournament system is that all three big teams made it through.

image.thumb.png.7825434a1e0a88d9e9217dca7a5afe95.png

Needed a penalty shootout next to see off Wales and were lucky to win 1-0 against Andriy Shevchenko's Serbia.

Before the next round, it was confirmed that we wouldn't be staying in Germany, as the PSG job became available and can't say no to joining them.

 image.thumb.png.d6087fb27ddf6ad79decdd27c749148a.png

Was another 1-0 win in the semi final, against Turkey, as once again we couldn't make our chances count.

Came up against Portugal once again, in the final. Lots of goals. 2-2 after normal time. At 3-3 in extra time, they missed a penalty to take it to a shootout.

But once again, England lost it.

We came so close to defending our crown.

Had such an easy draw in the knockout rounds, was crazy.

image.png.b9500da30d009110e92f55413519377e.png

image.png.8ecfb90c678077425832199ae70c9cc8.png

So thankful that we managed to finish 2nd in the group in the end.

Now we look forward to taking over the French champions and see what's going on in Paris.

Results: Serie A I ~ Serie A II | Copa do Brasil | State Championship

In a season where I was expecting mid table/bottom half the step up to Serie A wasn't as tough as I thought it would be. If I'm honest, I'm kicking myself for not winning it we had some poor results at crucial times we also had a lot of games that we dominated as well and couldn't get the win. On the final day Flamengo went behind which meant we had to win to be champions but we went on to lose and they turned it around to win so it was tighter than it looks. If you look at the XG Table too it says we should of won the league the frustrating thing about this season was conceding long range goals game after game it became unbearable at times, but we're going to dust ourselves down and go again next season. I'm hoping I can attract the right quality of player to attack on all fronts next season.

In another life Rhys Guppy was a sensation for Northern Irish side Donegal Celtic ultimately captaining his side to a Champions League victory amassing over 800 goal contributions in his 700 appearances for the club. In this life he’s just a teenager from Exeter hoping to make it as a football manager.

Now we look forward to taking over the French champions and see what's going on in Paris.

POST 34: The Paris Life

Looking forward to managing PSG. They have been so dominant in France throughout this save. Hopefully we can keep that going.

As seems to be the case wherever we go, we played in and won the domestic supercup season opener. Always a nice way to start a season.

image.thumb.png.71103f126deaf29ea85cf8b59e6db6cd.png

With England, we qualified for another Nations League finals. Wales who were there last time, finished bottom of our group and were relegated!

This time round, we will face the big guns in Germany, Italy and Portugal. Nice!

image.thumb.png.88a9ee7d22f22c510c7c6099ac12ce92.png

Surprisingly though, we got a whole different set of countries for our World Cup qualification group. No top 10 side joining us this time round, so should be sailing right through this one.

image.thumb.png.48307bf4ac34b87628a27db0078ff67a.png

Sometimes ties on FM can be really up and down.

In the knockout rounds of the Champions League, we won the first leg against Atletico 3-0 but lost the second by the same score line. Only went through on penalties in the end.

image.png.e83e65b390843a15695047129001e7a2.png

Apparently Ligue 1 has only 18 teams these days.

With just 4 games to go, we faced title rivals Lille, and basically put their race to bed by somehow thrashing them 8-1. Just one of those games where the ball just keeps on finding the back of the net!

image.thumb.png.4e565684823051f4c86b74941d48f939.png

image.png.259fb1056a9546335671c999ac99d8f9.png

And it was a similar story in the cup. Thought we would end up playing Lille again, but they were beaten in the semi final, so our opponents were Nantes instead.

The same occurred though, as we trounced them 7-1. What a day that must have been for their fans.

image.thumb.png.3c7602efbd97f439bacda38d4e723d2c.png

Our last few games were all against easier opponents, but we technically were pushed all the way by Lille and only won the title right at the end.

image.thumb.png.8bbf7bc7228f55bad79cba13aeb75c81.png

Apparently PSG have still never won that elusive maiden Champions League title, appearing in only one more final since playing Bayern Munich all the way back in 2020.

Can we end their duck, against Arsenal, who haven't featured in the showpiece themselves since 2006.

image.png.79fe9a88cc6b48a3fe75fcfced9d49c7.png

And it wasn't to be for us.

We were by far the better team. But we conceded from a long shot for the equaliser and then gave a way a needless penalty to throw away our chance of winning it all.

image.thumb.png.a654a6e324546b90a3efd2419e50d299.png

And then it was straight off to the Nations League. Both our matches followed the same pattern, of early England goals followed by resolute defending to see out the match. But that was enough to win us this trophy, finally.

image.thumb.png.763b1354510e78fa35f1163c29fc9a1d.png

image.thumb.png.9b41ac6492ece55e07bafeb26e681818.png

After being so close throughout our tenure, it was nice to finally actually win it.

image.thumb.png.0494e206e069142c134ead35a8622c30.png

And the season wasn't over, as we heading straight away for the Club World Cup, which apparently was taking place now. We only just qualified, from appearing in the UCL final a few weeks prior.

Two comfortable wins over teams from the Americas were nice warm ups, but things were only going to get tougher when we were to face the European heavyweights.

image.png.d7482669d1b95366011911926b4a248f.png

And things just weren't meant to be. Our game against Barca was scheduled for just 2 days after the Atlas match, and that just wasn't enough time for the players to recover.

image.thumb.png.c3e428c953b89e5b0eb6d5bf08c60e9d.png

Would've been nice to win the trophy, seeing as we were there to take part anyway, but the scheduling was ridiculous.

Not sure where to go from here.

Now that have won the big 5 leagues, just got a few cups to get, plus the big one, the World Cup, and the Copa America.

Am really enjoying this challenge, but am also starting to just wish it was over already. A bit fed up of joining another new club and have to set up everything all over again.

And am annoyed as don't think I'll hit the top of the Hall of Fame when it is all over. Oh well.

@avzbruvzYou're not the first to get near the end and just want it all to be over. I think other challenges end on a real high, usually winning a Champions League, sometimes out of the blue, but near completion, this can just feel like a slog.

And it's common with the hall of fame as well. Winning lots of trophies once doesn't get it done. I once was in 2nd and came close because it just took me so long to complete the challenge, but there was some jerk at a big club who sped past me picking up lots of points every season.Probably at PSG now I come to think of it.

I'm not really marketing the challenge t potential challengees, am I? It's a lot of fun, honest.

My season in the Copa Libertadores has been ruined, I'm really starting to dislike Brazil not only does the foreign transfer window open the day after squad registration for Copa Libertadores it also failed to register any of my players correctly so I've had to use greyed out players... I almost rage left to start again in a different country but I spent the hours on the "summer window" gutting the club and re doing it's staff and I've found transfers difficult I managed to control myself and stay. I just need to keep reminding myself I can still make progress in this challenge this season.

Well the save is definitely taking its toll. Kind of got to the point where I've been to too many clubs that I don't set them up properly anymore.

And I also go a bit lazy and am a couple of seasons behind in updating here. Will try catch you all up by the end of the weekend.

Definitely a great challenge, as have managed in countries I haven't before. I was mainly doing saves in England, with the occasional top team in Europe. Would definitely recommend, but it is tough.

Guess the reward comes with the hard work and perseverance!

POST 35: Where next?

Whilst doing my year in France, I added some other European leagues, as still need a couple more cup to add to the resume.

The problem is that they only just loaded and have no managerial vacancies. Was going to stay in Paris, but as I didn't manage to win the Coppa Italia, I thought a return to the San Siro in the interim wasn't such a bad idea.

image.thumb.png.e4dd861a9a4493436393bb294d6807ae.png

Whilst churning along waiting for the most important matches of the season, in the cup, over the international breaks we have managed to cruise through our group and make it to the World Cup.

Hopefully sticking by England for the last 4 years will all be worth it.

image.thumb.png.0b4cce7639e9ec9b34c78aee4bfc5d1f.png

Had a tough draw in the Champions League, which included former team Dortmund and the best player in the world in Najim Kuijpers.

Went into the final matchday level on points with Atletico, but as we had the easier fixture, against whipping boys Linfield, I was confident we could top the group. Atleti ended up losing as well, so we sealed the top spot.

image.thumb.png.c921975e77c97a6e56c7998a6e905e00.png

But the season didn't quite go as planned. A quarter final against rivals Juventus didn't end the way I would have liked and that has ruined it all.

image.thumb.png.3ae5908dd08fb8e2f6c502ebedc2d52a.png

Although still in the Champions League, I had enough with Inter, so resigned the next morning! My first time doing that this whole save.

image.thumb.png.3603285f1c53af4a0d6ed4bee3e242aa.png

Thought I should show this as well.

I hope everyone is able in life to find a partner as loyal as Thierry Henry. Most of the time, he was one of the rare few willing to move with me when the new club asked for backroom staff changes.

7 clubs in 6 countries, he followed me the whole way round Europe! Can't ask for more than that.

image.thumb.png.8931231711ff9753eaca255affe78a45.png

After being a coach everywhere, I made him my assistant at Inter.

And was touched when he walked out on them right after I did!

image.thumb.png.c44ec47f7d9fca4af4867bb080e2884c.png

And after a few weeks without a club, I accepted a 3 month contract to help try get Lens into next season's Champions League.

image.thumb.png.0c982d450f46f793258d6c889183431f.png

I also took the job as they are still in the Europa League, and although not a trophy needed to win, would be nice if could add it to my cabinet. Only 5 games to get through to lift the tropghy.

And it happens soon, as their season hinges on that week of playing Marseille thrice.

image.thumb.png.9f17734ca6106b95d4e8d740174571aa.png

But after two 2-0 losses to Marseille, this 2-1 victory did little to heal the wounds. They not only damaged our chances in the league, but have also knocked us out of Europe.

image.thumb.png.bb708cc440a175e67b0c9563e7c1d002.png

But the FM gods rewarded me elsewhere, as for once England got an easy draw in the Nations League, with Serbia ranked 16th the best opponent we will face.

image.thumb.png.ad6c376f874b75775d8c4ab823faa2cb.png

Would definitely class our time at Lens as a failure unfortunately. Came close to overhauling Rennes, sitting in 4th at one point. But not securing Champions League football for them is disappointing, and I left at the end of my short contract, eyeing a move somewhere new, to try and win a cup.

image.png.e871f7b42f60bb86c0f6f49ea75185fa.png

Thinking is to win the cup somewhere in Europe before ending up in Scotland, as they have two cups each season.

And before the World Cup started, that vacancy appeared. Once more, I patiently waited for that team predicted by the media to win the league but is actually flailing in mid table.

And Hapoel Haifa fit that description to a tee.

image.thumb.png.20ebf5f21dd4bac00f1a9969cda3f8f4.png

So I will probably be sticking it out here in Israel until we win the cup.

And with no European football after not making the Championship group last year in the league, can focus on doing well domestically next season.

But for now, time to go enjoy another world cup with England!

So after the 2026 World Cup we've managed to land the Ivory Coast job, they've fallen quite a bit down the world rankings. There are plenty of teams better than them even in Africa according to the rankings but I'm hopeful. The AFCON starts in January I believe so not too long to wait providing we qualify.

Results: Serie A I ~ Serie A II | Copa Libertadores | Copa do Brasil | State Championship

Another disappointing season for me, we had a 10 point lead at one stage at the top of the table and form then became so inconsistent that we managed to throw the title away. On top of that in the Copa Libertadores the game didn't register my squad properly so had to go with greyed out players. We also gave a poor showing in the cup which I was hoping to win this season. Overall this season seemed like a waste of time, but I do want a proper crack at the Copa Libertadores so I will be having one final season here before I move on. I'm happy with the progress we've made overall in the 3 years I've been here, at the moment we're renting the stadium we use and the board are now building a new stadium for the club, so I have no doubts I'll leave this club in a good place regardless of what happens in my final season.

I also have the AFCON coming up in June which we qualified for by the skin of our teeth with a 90th minute winner in our final group stage game!

POST 36: World Cup 2042

I've waited 4 years for this. Can we go all the way this time around?

Started hot straight away. First game in, were 4-0 up at half time. Went into conservation mode in the second half, and only ended up winning this one 5-1.

image.thumb.png.a74807a174f08ac6e53e1cad46aa01d7.png

Knew a draw would be good enough to top the group on goal difference. Were on top for most of the match, but the finishing let us down. Still, we won the group. First stage complete.

image.png.e08369809861dd11f4161a586997ba75.png

image.png.e416517918b6dc926c6b1a6ca2d676a2.png

Thought this match would be a lot tighter than it turned out to be. They never troubled us and we could have had more if we had wanted.

image.thumb.png.59c153841346a5c294d85ee83613c3ea.png

Not much to say about this third round tie. We were on top early, were 2-0 up after 35 minutes. And saw out the game from there.

image.thumb.png.15942f0d49126a51bdf314a200286479.png

A similar theme in this quarter final. But Belgium did have a go in the second half, making it a more tense affair. But we're now just two matches from the title.

image.thumb.png.889c5409cf1c2c91ea41d71d00b79d7a.png

Can't complain however we beat Italy. Would have had more if a penalty wasn't downgraded into a free kick and if hadn't had a goal disallowed. But no complaints.

image.thumb.png.cf24b78db43aa02b5a16f24c2ee73326.png

Second half was a lot more controlled, taming the game to control our lead.

I've not really played since I set up my manager - how is the general first job hunt on this years game? I mainly ask as I'm one in game day in and already offered a job interview somewhere I didn't even apply for due to them being impressed by my 'record'

To Singapore we go, the season is already mostly completed so should give us some settling time ready to prepare for the summer and indeed next season. Only a small league with very few games, but an ok starting point even if in a low reputation league.

It seems as though a couple of you have been affected by a registration bug in S America. I'd normally suggest reporting it as a bug, but it probably might not be fixed for FM22 now we've had the final update. Always worth flagging it up so they know to look at it for FM23, although I'm sure they must do. I can't actually find a bug report for it though, so if any of you hit the bug (again) it might be good to report it so we don;t have the same problem next year.

_JHTB_'s The message from Oxford City is probably a bug as well, but maybe just the content of the message rather than the job offer.

Well my time as Ivory Coast manager will be very short lived it only took us 11 games total to win the African Cup of Nations, I'm amazed I have an international trophy so soon, usually leave these till the last minute. I'm pleased to get my first trophy on the board so to speak after having such a rough time of it in Brazil thus far, looking forward to getting this final season out the way, hopefully with a trophy or two in the bag.

POST 37: The Quiet Life

Am joining a Hapoel Haifa side that disappointed last season. Having been predicted to finish top of the league, they failed to even make the championship group when the league split. So there's no sort of European football in the schedule this year.

After some nice pick ups, including loaning a young midfielder from Chelsea, the media thought we would win the league this year. And we were level on points at the top when the split did occur with 10 games to go.

But the dream of winning the cup in our first year in Israel were dashed in the 8th final, as we we were knocked by Hapoel Tel Aviv.

image.thumb.png.b5b7d61216552ee31db156c747b7a25a.png

A run of poor results against the better sides saw us fall off of the pace. At least we finished third and will have some involvement in continental football for the year ahead.

image.png.5ee39a86ef43ced1c37456bd1ea32a67.png

Otherwise, it was a bit of a disappointing year, and with no national responsibility at the moment, the summer will be spent fully focussed on making us a force to be reckoned with.

I decided to mix things up for my final season and attempt a new formation and it clearly back fired, It was such a strange season falling off the pace fairly early on then we got a great run of results to where we were 4 points off top with 9/10 games to go, then at the most frustrating time I lost 4 first team players for 4 or 5 games and we became draw city from that moment on, I can't stress how much I dislike this league! Also in the Copa do Brasil we got to the quarter final and got drawn against a Serie C side and felt we were in with a good chance of winning this competition then being 3-1 up against them to lost 5-4.....

Finally some success in Brazil! Overall we were pretty comfortable in this competition, the main struggle was the semi final but honestly we never looked like losing against Corinthians, we were the dominant team. So my time in Brazil is over, disappointed overall but I'm pleased we managed to get one competition win out of it, I'm not sure where I'll look to move on to yet there are not many options really so will have to be patient and see what comes about.

CAPE TOWN CITY

Club Overview ~ League Table ~ Squad ~ Finances

23 days after leaving Atletico Goianiense we have arrived at Cape Town City, their media prediction is actually 5th so they're massively underperforming and I feel I can turn their fortunes around pretty quickly. If you look at their squad they have 18 players so thankfully the January window opens in a few days which helps. I was offered the Fiorentina job too but felt it was a bit too soon to take a job of that stature in this save. One concern I have about South Africa it looks like only the top team qualifies for the Champions League from what I can see in the rules I hope this is not the case!

POST 38: Yaala Hapoel

Hoping for better results than last year. Have brought in some reinforcements, so want to see an improvement.

Couldn't stay away from international management forever, and when the Mexican side lost their manager, I was more than keen to step in.

image.png.82a544ff42041f3a56fa7c13d026144f.png

After getting past Olympiakos in the previous round, I thought Spartak Trnava wouldn't be an obstacle to us getting to the group stage.

The first leg finished 0-0, and we traveled to Slovakia with all to play for.

Definitely didn't expect to see 11 goals be scored in 120 minutes. But at least we came through it and are within touching distance of the big boys in the Conference League.

image.thumb.png.e50d4775b4f869c045b74fb4d2d17eed.png

image.png.8ae59cfa5fc5cda23104d48393f7b718.png

But our European journey was soon over, as Troyes proved to be too formidable for us, winning 3-0 and 4-0 to send us out the tournament in the last qualifying round.

image.thumb.png.da1596de504eb6ef99795c9dfbdff794.png

They say men can't multitask, but somehow I managed to get Mexico qualified for both the NA Nations League finals and the Gold Cup with a win from the same match! Never seen that before.

image.thumb.png.ad3d156a4588e2ffb72e014c1724a1b4.png

image.thumb.png.3e3e360b54c0dfc1e8017d314790e867.png

And even more importantly, I then got news that Mexico, and USA, were to be the extra teams in the upcoming Copa America.

So what started as just a stop gap job, and returning to a country where a club calls me an icon, may actually help send me into retirement. We are the highest ranked team, so surely we are the favourites, no?

In the league, as we hit the split with 10 games to go, the 10 point gap to our nearest and dearest just seems to big a gap to overcome.

But we are still in the cup and will focus on that instead.

With a few league games to go, we had guaranteed 3rd in the league. Maccabi Haifa had secured the title.

Since both 2nd and 3rd enter the Conference League, and with 2nd only earning a bit more in prize money, I let the kids face our rivals in the league match, just days before the cup final.

Their 7-0 loss was to have no detriment on our first XI, as they went out in the cup final and brought home the goods, with an early goal in each half.

Wasn't how I wanted the league to go, but the target in Israel was always to win the cup first and foremost (just don't tell the board that).

A summer with Mexico to follow. Have two different cups to play for, in two different continent's tournaments! Exciting times.

But at least we came through it and are within touching distance of the big boys in the Conference League.

image.png.8ae59cfa5fc5cda23104d48393f7b718.png

But our European journey was soon over, as Troyes proved to be too formidable for us, winning 3-0 and 4-0 to send us out the tournament in the last qualifying round.

image.thumb.png.da1596de504eb6ef99795c9dfbdff794.png

They say men can't multitask, but somehow I managed to get Mexico qualified for both the NA Nations League finals and the Gold Cup with a win from the same match! Never seen that before.

I'm not sure anybody has ever won 2 of the international continental tournaments with Mexico before, but if they're ranked 6th, you obviously stand a good chance. Good luck!

Season 2035 / 36 - Lazio

Best was to describe this season, my first full season with Lazio is by the word 'almost'

I was hoping to make progress on the top 3 so to be in the title challenge with 2 games to go surprised me, but unfortunately Juventus the current Champions League holders were just too good and barely dropped any games. We were still challenging on all fronts by the 3rd last game and we simply ran out of legs. 94 points would have won me the title last season.

With the Italian Cup, it was all about avoiding Juventus at any point and we managed to do that until the final which was played at the Olimpico, our home ground where we beat Juve 4 - 1 in the league. It might be my own superstition, but we were on the right side (away side) in game which i didnt like.

We were outplayed granted, but 3 disallowed goals to Pereira and one in the 94th minute hurt!

My first involvement in the European Champions League in this save and I really didnt give us any sort of chance to go deep. I've had bugger all funds for transfers, £8m does not go a long way in FM22 when you're restricted on non-euro players incoming. To my surprise we were more than competitive in this competition.  We were given the group of death with Chelsea, Atletico and Anderlecht. Managed to top the group on the last matchday beating Chelsea 3 - 2 at Stamford Bridge. We were drawn against Lyon in first knockout round, a comfortable 2 - 0 win gave us the leg up, we managed to repeat the scoreline in the home leg. Quarters against Man City, home leg first up, 4 goals for us within the first 32 minutes had me stunned and pretty much through to the semis which was against their rivals Man Utd, this time at Old Trafford first up.  We escaped somehow with a 83rd minute equaliser 1 - 1 in a game we were outplayed.  A home 2 - 0 win put us into the final against a Real Madrid side that brushed off Liverpool 10 - 1 in the semis.

Went into the final having lost the league and Italian Cup so really had to take something out of this extraordinary season.  We started the game superbly scoring in the 6th minute and went into the half leading by that goal.  However whatever Klopp said at half time worked as Real scored 2 goals within the first 10 mins of the second half and we failed to score again for the game.  So painful!

We've managed to qualify for the Club Championships which is on next year so there's lots to go for next year.  Unfortunately only given another bleak transfer budget.

After the final, Klopp decided to take on the Chelsea gig so I've applied for the Real job. Their wage budget is x3 what Lazio can afford.  Big decisions to make....
