Vikeologist's 2048/49 Bayer Leverkusen Report

Image result for bayer leverkusen

We came close to winning the league. At one point we were 7 points behind leaders Dortmund in a 3-horse race, but with 3 matches to go we faced new leaders Bayern who were only 2 points ahead of us. Beat them and our win our last 2 matches, we’d be champions. We were much the better side, but bad luck and inability to take chances led to a 2-1 defeat. Eventually we finished 3rd because I played young players in the remaining 2 matches.

The question is do I stick around for another season with Leverkusen? There’s no guarantee we’ll be better or able to compete again next season. It’s just my pride keeping me here at this point. This is my biggest failure in FM for years.

Top Goalscorer – Maximiliano Páez – 30

This really explain our struggles this season. He usually scores between 40 and 50 goals a season, and he didn’t miss a lot of matches through injury. Just stopped scoring near the end. He only scored in 4 out of his last 15 matches, and some of those were penalties.

Not just poor from. At the age of 30 he really has declined a bit, but I don’t plan to make a panic change, (if I stay).

Highest Average Rating (minimum 10 matches played) Bart Hanssen – 7.25

Another massive step backwards from my players’ usual best score. Hanssen is my left winger.

Man of The Match – Bart Hanssen – 8

MVP – Bart Hanssen

Going through these stats, and their decline since last season, has really made me want to quit Leverkusen. The last 2 seasons have been out lowest points totals (full seasons) of my reign. We’re going backwards.

Season 2047/48 - Real Madrid

Good decision to leave Dortmund without any accomplishments in Germany and take up the role at Real as we managed to walk in the league with several games to go and also win the Spanish Cup relatively easy.  I walked into a team that came second to Real San Sebastian however it was stacked with really high end players.  Was just a little shallow in depth and surprisingly low on transfer funds so brought in some decent loans and a cheap 3 star Ghanaian midfielder who turned into a bit of a baller and became a main stayer in the first team and added another star in the process.

The World Club Cup is next season but I dont think Real has qualified so I'm thinking of moving on with only the German league required, however no jobs there available. I also need to win a separate Cup from somewhere (assuming I can also win the German Cup) so i might holiday for a bit and see if I can pinch one from somewhere or until something exciting in Germany happens.   There's also the Euros and Copa America about to begin so hopefully there's a merry-go-round of jobs that pop up.

Off down under with Newcastle Jets.

NewcastleJetsAppointment.png.5393ccc6ac3b5996a8c725c37c92e102.png

They were sitting joint top at the time of taking over when the previous manager stood down with 6 games remaining of the regular season. It's a pretty solid squad but unfortunately its at the 5 foreign player limit already.

Nevertheless I won 5 and drew 1 of the remaining games to win the regular season:

Thats the Asian Champions League qualification secured, now its down to the Final Series to see if I can get the league win that will count towards the challenge.

Unlike my other jobs so far I am going to stick around and work with this one to see how I fare in the Champions League. The last Australian team to win it was Western Sydney Wanderers in 2014 but the last two times were South Korean so if I can't do it here I will try to get a job there (Ulsan job was available whilst I was unemployed but I didn't get an interview :( )

So I ended up winning the A-League Finals as well therefore winning all possible domestic trophies in Australia in less than 100 days (even though only one counts towards the challenge).

NewcastleJetsGrandFinalWIn.png.385ac35bc32e5cfb4bd23155507c0fdf.png

I was starting to plan for the new season and the 5 foreigner rule is a pain (especially when you have 5 foreigners already that are hard to shift) but then I found out about the rule that you cannot sign players from the same division, you have to exchange players or loan them. Furthermore I looked into this years Asian Champions League to see how the Australian sides faired......the answer was badly with none of them getting out of the group stage. I believe South Korea will be the best route to securing that particular title.

Then I get informed that one of my followed clubs, TNS, have sacked their manager after finishing second in the Welsh Premier. If I apply I break my promise to the board that I won't apply for another job which would result in instant sacking but if I stay I reckon I waste a season not really getting anywhere.

You can probably guess where this is heading right?

NewcastleJetsSacking.thumb.png.6908c295a17d9b4f665c0cb06637764d.png

At least it made a change from me resigning all the time so the press can't get on at me for that  It was a decent squad but I can't see me being able to complete in continental football with the registration rules as they are and given its not the strongest nation in the tournament. Again, no time for sentiment in the challenge, I got what I needed and got out!

Before I applied I got a hold of the stats at Newcastle Jets and updated my save overview:

NewcastleJetsSaveOverview.thumb.png.a8066154368978296d6e9bb2af55b48b.png

I immediately applied for the TNS job (again since the first time I applied I got sacked and it didn't seem to register it) and got the interview and the job offer shortly after. The Glentoran job had also been available but given TNS' dominance of Welsh football it seemed like a sure thing to add the last of the 5 league titles outside the big 5 and another trophy.

TNSAppointment.png.502d778ef4155066ff08e06a86634ff0.png

Given TNS have a transfer budget of £1.24m and a decent squad to begin with I'm confident I can win a double.

Visually this is how the trophy count is progressing.

USA NATIONAL TEAM: 2038 WORLD CUP

After winning NACL last year with CF América, my idea was to move on and start in South America. But well, I had an offer for USA NT and accepted, as there is a World Cup in 2038 and Gold Cup in 2039. With they in the 11th position of NT ranking, I thought it would be a nice oportinity to get to WC late stages and to complete Gold Cup. As per my appointment, the team was almost qualified for WC (only 1 point in 2 games needed), which we complied easily. Got the group stage against Denmark (a tought one, 16th NT) and Guinea, the easy one:

Then made it to Second Round against Norway:

Well, what can I say. Was expecting to get to QF at least but there I am, crushed in the second round. They were absolutely killers on the counter, and we missed almost all our opportunities. Brazil ended up winning the tournament and, to add more bad news Mexico, which will be the toughest rival in next years Gold Cup, made it to the Semifinal. Will see If I end up losing 2 years...

I almost feel bad for how easy Wales was with TNS.

Treble secured in an unbeaten season where the only game lost was against Tromso in the Europa Conference Qualifiers

I made 2 key signings up front from the Vanarama National and North as well as the previous manager agreeing to sign Kyle Wootton. 4-2-4 was the favoured formation with Wootton bagging 47 in 44 starts, Skett with 30 in 19 starts, Williams with 28 in 21 starts and Dackers 24 in 9 starts (32 sub appearances). Under normal circumstances I'd love to have stayed on and worked on the facilities to get youth players through and try to get into Champions League proper but once again I have all I can achieve realistically at the club (now Continental Pro License) so its time to move on after 303 days in charge.

Not sure where I'll end up next, I've probably got to think about getting my reputation increased at a job in one of the big 5 or go elsewhere and look for a potential champions league winner (South Korea, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil are now selected to be active). I also have Holland selected as I still have to win 6 other domestic cups so if one of the better jobs appear there I might make my move there instead.

EDIT:

ChivasAppointment.png.23c18c1b62c20713bbb636e23ad9348e.png

So an unexpected turn of events sees me take over at Chivas where I think I stand a really good chance of challenging for the NACL title but it might take a few seasons. Chivas won the tournament in 2018 but the last 2 seasons have seen US winners.

There is no national cup in Mexico so this is all around the NACL. The season has not long started and they are in the NACL with an expectation to reach the semi-final.

USA NATIONAL TEAM: 2039 GOLD CUP

What a stressfull tournament this has been. I hate this game. And I love it.

d61de5db0b65b73d1875fabf693d4de4.png

Easy group stage, I think to myself. This should be an easy first two games and then a rotation match... Well, as we say here in Spain, took the first one on the face: wasn't able to beat Trinidad and Tobago and even suffered at the end to keep the draw... Which made me change planification and minimise rotations to secure first place. A 6-0 to Barbados and a 10-0 to Martinica, and more fatigue to my starters.

cce71a818d46d0bba219c8e0b9a1ff6a.png

Easy in QF - Dominican Republic was never a rival, and then the suffering. Two undeserved, ugly wins, against Jamaica and Mexico, being the worst team in both matches and having to play defending football. A win is a win, but I don't like winning in that way. Well, moving on - destination Argentina or Brazil!

Vikeologist's 2048/49 Celtic (and Italy) Report

Official Celtic Football Club Website | celticfc.com

So much to talk about.

I left Leverkusen, deciding that they were never going to win the Bundesliga. (They led the Bundesliga all season without me, until throwing it away by losing their last 2 matches of the season).

The Celtic manager took the Leverkusen job, so I took the Celtic job. I assumed it would be easy to win what I needed to, and it was pretty easy. I won the league and both domestic cups. We also reached the Champions league semifinal, losing in extra time, which is better than I ever did with Leverkusen.

I set new personal records for goals scored and goal difference for a 38 match season; 159 and 132 respectively. (If I’d played my strongest striker to the end I might have beaten _JHTB_’s record of 107, if I’d won all 3 of the matches I drew near the end. Bear in mind though that would involve dropping 6 or less points the entire season. (I think I equalled it once).

Dortmund won the Bundesliga, meaning that the Bayern manager’s job was shaky. Unfortunately they reached the Champions League final, and it looks as though they’re not making a change.

Top Goalscorer – Moussa Ndayishimiye – 55

This seems impressive, but Moussa was injured for 2 months at the start of the season, thus missing a lot of easy matches, and didn’t start for the final matches of the season because I was starting a 15 year-old striker.

If he’d played the whole season he could probably have challenged my personal record of 75.

Highest Average Rating (minimum 10 matches played) Moussa Ndayishimiye – 7.92

Actually I also had a veteran striker who equalled this mark despite only starting 7 of the 16 matches he played in.

Man of The Match – 9. Moussa Ndayishimiye – 11

MVP – Moussa Ndayishimiye

With a promising young striker, I am a bit tempted to steer away from the challenge and see if I can achieve the 1,000 goal challenge with him at hibs. This is basically where a player scores 1,00 goals for you, and can include international goals, if you’re the international manager.

The youngster in question is Adam Maitland 50a.

20230812071057_1.thumb.jpg.73d04e2886e555ba86b2e61c4f1f2310.jpg

I started him in league matches as soon as he came through, and he did score 7 in those 8 starts, (with 4 sub appearances in the cup and Champions league). 2 were penalties. He’s obviously not that good yet, but we played 67 matches this season. If he could score say 30 goals a season while developing over the next couple of years, then maybe he could be the one. I know the maths, but as I’ve said above, in this system a top level striker can score 70 odd goals a season if they avoid injury. The question is, do I want to abandon the challenge and spend more than 20 years at Celtic churning out trophies. There would have to be other objectives, such as prioritising Scottish players and winning the Champions League.

Anyway, it’s the World cup with Italy next, and there are no available top jobs in Germany or Portugal, the two other leagues I have loaded, so I’ll just see how I feel at the end of the summer. Maybe I won’t put too much effort into Celtic until the end of June when players are released. I don’t have any transfer funds anyway.

Vikeologist's 2050 Italy World Cup Report

I left France after 6 years without winning any silverware with them, and feeling as though I never would, so of course they immediately won the Nations League.

I had a decision to make between Argentina and Italy. I chose the latter because I need both the World Cup and the Euros. We did win every WC qualifying match, but only achieved a draw and defeat against England in the nations league. That was a couple of years ago though.

I wouldn’t say I’m confident, but winning this is a possibility, I suppose.

I’ve just seen that I’m expected to make the semifinals, so this could be a short stay at Italy.

Group Stage

Italy             3-0    Tunisia

Italy             2-0    U.A.E.

Safely topped the group without picking up any new injuries.

Bosnia & Herzegovina next, which we’ll obviously be expected to win.

Second Round

Spoiler

Italy             5-1    Bosnia & Herzegovina

Ok, I’m bored with these easy matches. Who’s next? Norway.

Third Round

Spoiler

Italy             2-0    Norway

That was indeed harder. We only scored our second goal in stoppage time, and we’d have been in trouble if they had anyone capable of finishing.

3 of our best players are suspended for the next match, plus a sub who’d have been an automatic replacement for one of them.

And the easy matches are of course over.

Or that’s what I figured until Czechia beat the Netherlands in their quarter final. Not easy, but Netherlands are ranked 2 in the world, though not for long, I suppose.

Quarter Final

Spoiler

Italy             0-1    Czechia

We dominated but couldn’t break them down, so when they had a player sent off I went on the attack. Then we had a player sent off for a second yellow, but I kept attacking wanting to finish it in normal time, and they scored at the end of the match on a counter-attack.

In the end I wasn’t sacked, but the Australia job was vacant, so I’ve applied for and taken that.

However, I am running out of viable nations to win this with. I’ve managed Spain, Italy, France and Belgium. England will never give the job to a Scotsman. If one of my former nations doesn’t give me a second shot, this is going to be tricky.

In a battle of the exes, Spain beat France in the final,

I did plan to stay at Celtic and see how my young striker progressed in his first full season towards the 1,000 goal target, but the Dortmund job also came up. Unfortunately, a few weeks after the interview, they haven’t offered the job to anyone. I’m still at Celtic and stopped bringing in new players because I was expecting to leave, so frankly the squad is a bit of a mess at the moment. Still, all I need to do for the moment is play my 15 year old in attack, (doesn’t turn 16 until August). Still a bit of a mess though, because lots of players left at the end of the season, and I haven’t signed anyone new.

Dortmund did eventually get around to offering me the job, but having started the season with Celtic, I think I'm more interested in pursuing the 1,000 goal thing, and maybe come back to this point later to continue this challenge.

I will accept the job though just to see what I make of the Dortmund squad.

Season 2048/49 - VFL Wolfsburg

I joined Wolfburg knowing it was going to be a long slog, especially after a few seasons of mediocrity to my own standards at Dortmund. The team i took over was worst than that of Dortmund, not really having any bonifide world beaters.

It was a mixed seasons with both ups and downs, we started off with 4 wins and a draw but then went the next 5 games without a win playing none of the big 3 in that spell. The objective was to make the champions league (last year they finished 5th) which would show progression and qualify us for the champions league proper.  We were able to achieve that on the final day.

Hopefully we can build on this next season.

We didnt really feature in the cup.

Season 2049/50 - VFL Wolfsburg

Managed to fly through this season. Managed to get a couple decent out of contract players in the offseason however with the pick of the lot DM only signing for 12 months at 32 years young, he has decided to jet off to Newcastle on a free at the end of the season.

The team is still a tier below the big guns RB and Bayern however drawing to Bayern away and beating RB in the first two games of the season got me optimistic. We then lost to Augsburg the following game to bring me back to earth. We ended up finishing 4th again and consolidated our position in the champions league with a couple games left in the season.  Not sure if that is progress or not, probably a reflection of the teams around me instead if anything.

One thing we can take away from this season is that we made the final of DFB Pokal where we faced none other than Bayern.  We start off well despite having less of the ball having a disallowed goal in the first 10 minutes, but then shortly after we did hit the lead.  Bayern then dominated the game for the remainder of the match and also having a goal disallowed just before half time.  Just as i was about to implement my slow the game down tactics, Bayern equalised in the 87th minute.  So extra time we went where Bayern scored and won the game.

2033 Season Review - Atlanta United

After the double last season the focus this year would be on the Champions League, to do so I needed to add a couple extra players to my squad, I was helped by 2 of my foreign players taking up green cards freeing up a couple of international slots so i did what did last year and raided my new favourite country in this save - Serbia! We added CB Marko Popovic for 1.2m and CM Zoran Ilic for 1.8m. We added depth with a couple players from the draft and went into the new season with, what I felt, was a squad capable of competing on all fronts.

Having topped our group we started in the second round of the Champions League with a game against Chivas. A 4-0 win in Mexico was followed up with a 3-1 win at home for us to progress, we then faced MLS side Nashville and another 4-0 first leg win (this time at home) meant the 1-1 draw away meant nothing. In the Semi finals we faced defending Champions America from Mexico. a tough 0-0 draw in Mexico (where they should have won) meant for a nervy second leg. 2 second half goals saw us through 3-1. The final was against Mexican side At. San Luis and we went into this game with not fit striker, and 2 of our first choice midfield 3 unable to play more than 30 minutes. I was worried. I shouldn't have been as we smashed them 6-2! No Idea where this came from. In this seasons Champions League I messed up the group stage by rotating too much, finishing 3rd meaning I had to win 2 playoff games to keep the club in it, we did so but it was unneeded stress

I stuck around after winning as we had the Club World Cup upcoming and there was no interesting jobs anyway. In the Club World Cup we somehow managed to win our group by beating Flamengo and AC Milan before losing to real Madrid 3-1 with 2 late goals in extra time just 48 hours after our game with Milan. My team were dead for this game.

I probably should have quit there but with no jobs going I thought I'd play out the season and see what comes up. We managed to retain the Eastern Conference, the Supporters Shield and then the MLS Cup but in the US Cup we lost in the final. This season was crazy as we played 64 games and while going in I felt our squad could cope the injuries we suffered really hurt us. We lost last years main man up top Mitrovic for 4 months in the early part of the season, then when he came back he took a while to find form and just as he did he missed a lot of the run in with another 6 week lay off. We also lost main CB Jakovic for 3 months in the middle of the season. Playing 2 or 3 times a week for the best part of 5 months was insane. So I will be resigning from Atlanta now to focus on South Korea while waiting for a new club job.

Speaking of South Korea we won our group (just about after my trying out some young players almost cost us by losing 3-1 away to Syria) meaning we qualified for this summers World Cup. Need to do well enough in that not to be fired before the Asian Championship in 12 months time.

World Cup 2034 Review. South Korea

Group Stage

Uruguay 0-3 South Korea - A storming to start to our campaign as we cruised our hardest game. 2 goals in a 5 minute spell halfway through the first half had as leading and then a late goal rounded it off

South Korea 1-3 Romania - a shocking performance from us. We took the lead but it was our game when our defence just didn't turn up, we made them look world class and the defeat left us worried about making it through

Second Round (If Applicable)

  Reveal hidden contents

South Korea 1-1p Denmark - we did make it through and our reward was Denmark (who would finish 3rd in the end) and we took an early lead before Denmark got level with 20 minutes to go. Extra time was pretty dull as neither side did much so to pens it was. Both sides missed their first but then the next 11 were all scored before our RB stepped up and saw his saved. Annoying but was nice to take such a good side to the limit

Third Round (If Applicable)

Quarter Finals (If Applicable)

Semi Finals (If Applicable)

Final/third place playoff (If Applicable)

Aftermath

Very weird. The target was to get to the second round, which we did, but the press reports were all about what a disaster the tournament was. My captain even resigned as an apology to the fans but the board were happy and I didn't get the sack? Like I say, strange. However I did keep my job and the target is still the Asian Cup in 6 months time. Hoping as well for a club job soon as well.

So these were my last posts as I've not played FM for like 2.5 months but the itch has returned with the new football season.

I did leave Atlanta United and ended up in brazil with Atletico Mineiro who sat mid table

ClubeAtlticoMineiro_Profile.thumb.png.cca5e552761893be132357eb354861fa.pngCampeonatoBrasileiroAssaSrieA_Stages.thumb.png.8e374fd441edf8dd46aff1f168a87010.png

It's going to take a little bit of time to remember where my head was with this save, especially with my South Korea squad with the Asian Cup coming soon, but should be fine once I settle back in.

Been away from the game a bit and the number of nations and leagues loaded took its toll in processing time but I'm delighted to say it was well and truly worth the wait.

I wasn't aware when I took over that CD Guadalajara have a self imposed transfer restriction in place since 1908 to only be able to sign Mexican players or Mexican-American players who have chosen to represent Mexico. Luckily this didn't impact me much as I had an excellent raft of talent available (of which I sold 2 of them to keep the squad happy) and I managed to get a couple of excellent additions in the January window (though my best central defender was cup tied in the NACL).

ChivasClosingStageWin.png.42b51e36e415f89968da0be90dbecdbe.png

I romped home to winning the Opening Stage and the Closing Stage (neither of which count towards my progress since I have won 5 top divisions) but the one that I was really after was a bit closer. I had injuries and a cup tied star defender ahead of taking on America at their own ground. It wasn't pretty but my older 3 star CA striker stole the show with a double with the winning goal coming in the 116th minute.

NACLWin.png.8e7a266deba2cf9868b76b0fdd1af0eb.png

I really had a superb front line and I was fortunate enough that I was able to snag a right winger come striker to fill the gap when my star striker left to join Porto for £12.5m. Before him Diego Lainez left for Al-Ain for £11.25m potentially rising to £14.25m. I spent most of that money plus another £10m from the transfer funds when I arrived (was a nice £22m) brining in a direct replacement for the striker and strengthening defence and central midfield with a loan deal for a Spurs youngster (again Mexican nationality).

That said the one player that really carried me through the season was this guy who I had to turn down £18m from Juventus on deadline day to keep a hold of him:

GilAlujas.thumb.png.89b34bd35498e37c5e68c8ac8d651558.png

34 goals and 15 assists in 36 starts and 11 sub-appearances as well as being missing for a month and a half leading up to the latter stages of the NACL. Depending on where I end up next I may look to bring him with me as he was an outstanding finisher and is still just 21.

Anyway, as is tradition now that I have achieved what I set out to achieve here it's time to move on:

Not many jobs on the go at the moment, Hertha Berlin are there who finished 10th in the Bundesliga which might not be a bad shout however I have only been this successful so far down to picking good teams to go for (as well as my 4-2-4 wide wing play tactics working particularly well) so I may just resign and see what happens over the next few months. No international jobs of note given its 2029 so I'd expect some decent jobs to become available next year when the 2030 World Cup takes place.

So I progressed the save looking for opportunities to either win domestic cups or potentially have a crack at the big 5 and I think I might have just done that.....

I am very much looking forward to this one as for the first time in the save I think this could be a multi-season team building job (that is assuming I don't struggle and get the sack!)

Was unemployed after USANT job and looking for opportunities in either Argentina or Brazil. Boca and River were both unstable at some moments during the season but never available, and then the job at Palmeiras became available. They were 4th in league with 8 games to go and 15 points behind the leader Flamengo, so impossible this season. Tho objective has been to secure the spot for Copa Libertadores and plan the season ahead.

The squad looks really good to me right now - so taking a look at some star signings to make it better. Will try to make the treble next year!

2051 Asian Cup - Iran (sorry about the large flag)

My second attempt at the Asian Cup with Iran after losing to South Korea in the final.  They are the ones to beat again no doubt.

Group stage of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Jordan ended up being 7 - 2, 2 - 0 and 4 - 0 wins.  In the second round we play UAE.

Second Round

Spoiler

a hard fought win 1 - 0 scoring in the 87th minute.  We'll need to improve if we're going to win this.   Up next Uzbekistan after beating Japan on penalties

QF (if applicable)

Spoiler

we won 5 - 2 after extra time.  Went up 1 - 0 early on but then copped a red in the 14th minute. They then scored twice to lead at half time. We equalised via the penalty spot after the break then missed another pen in the 80th minute to win.  They then had an injury but no subs left so it was 10 on 10 and Samadi score 3 in extra time to score all 5 goals.  We have South Kore next and two players out via suspension and tired players, not the way i would have liked to go into this battle

SF (if applicable)

Spoiler

We lost 3 - 0. They are just too good for us, out players went into the game a little fatigued and it showed.  They beat China in the final to retain

Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

nope.  i got sacked as the expectation was to make the final.  It;s 2051 and i still only have 1 international trophy, which has to be some sort of worst record ever!

Atletico Miniero Season Review 2034

I took over with the team in 12th after 13 games. I thought, based on previous clubs in this save, we could come in and kick. While we did we also managed to infuriate me at the same time.

We did alright, the board just wanted us to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana (so finish top 13) but, because I need to be in it to win it, I wanted the Copa Libertadores which is top 7. It took a while to figure out what my team would be as the squad was OK but nothing special, we found some form over the middle part of the season but found ourselves stuck in 8th as we just couldn't really beat the teams above us. Then we started to not win a single away game. We lost 6 away games in a row while picking up points. We stopped the rot with a 0-0 draw on the final day and it was enough to see us finish 7th on games won (the first sorting rule in Brazil) and sneak in.

I feel like this off season is going to be massive as I really do have to ship out a lot of players. Our best players are old and need replacing, we also really lack a striker - we should have finished 3rd on the xG table so it's clear where our issues lie. It should be quite the overhaul heading into next season. I hope.

We were already out of the cup when I took over so nothing to report there.

Have the Asian Cup with South Korea in a few weeks so will do the write up for that then.

2035 Asian Cup - South Korea

Group Stage

Iran 2-3 South Korea - what I thought was our toughest game in the group was our first as going in Iran were ranked 18th in the world but a hat trick from star man Kang Bong-Soo (including a late winner) gave us the opening game win
South Korea 5-0 Tajikistan - another game another Kang Bong-Soo hat trick meant I could rest a few players in the closing stages and give some minutes to others
UAE 1-2 South Korea - just the one goal from Kang here but it did end up being the winner. We were very good for 75 minutes but the final 15 we took our foot off the pedal, allowed them to score and almost nick a point but in the end we topped the group with 3 wins from 3.

Second Round (If Applicable)

Spoiler

Syria 1-3 South Korea - another couple of goals from Kang here as we cruised through, once again though letting a side score late on when we take our foot of the pedal

Quarter Finals (If Applicable)

Spoiler

South Korea e1-0 Australia - a real tight affair, we missed a pen just before HT but both sides had chances to win, and injury to Kang stopped his run but up stepped supersub Seo Young-Il to grab a winner with just 7 minutes of extra time left

South Korea 2-0 Qatar - no Kang at all for us here but once again left winger Seo Young-Il turned up as 2 goals from him saw us through to the final

Final (If Applicable)

Spoiler

UAE 1-2e South Korea - Kang was back and how we needed him. Tired legs were begging to catch up with us here and we were not at our best. A Kang goal just after HT had me hoping but then we let them score almost right away. Nothing more really happened so we went to extra time where that man Kang again struck after 101 minutes and we managed to see the rest of extra time out

Aftermath

Spoiler

Now it's been won I've moved on, I have 18 months till the next international tournament so that should leave me lots of time to focus on club football. I'm going to miss South Korea though, been manager here nearly 4 years (3 years and 360 days in fact) and I've enjoyed watching this side grow. When I took over I put my faith in a core group of players 22 or under and pretty much all of them stayed with me as we built to this. The star is clearly Kang Bong-Soo as he's now rated the best Asian player in the game and has 50 goals in 62 caps. I fear he's going to hurt me when I move to Europe but he's been a joy to manage here

Season 2050/51 - VFL Wolfsburg

By far and away the best season in Germany to date, being my 5th in Germany but my third with Wolfsburg. We start the season on fire winning our first 7 games and after 12 games we were 11 wins and 1 draw, sitting pretty atop. In the next 12 games we then went 8 - 2 - 2 and were still first but Bayern were only a couple points behind us. We then drew our net 3 games against lesser teams and that pretty much ruined us as we were then 6 points behind Bayern. We then beat Bayern (for the first time under my management) with 2 games to go to close the gap to 3 points.  We then lost away to RB and they drew to be crowned champions.  Of course in the last game they lost and we won to make it by the slimmest margins as we had the better goal difference in the end.

Major reason for the improvement in performance this year was a conscious decision to invest in high end young talent paid off immediately rather than topping up with older proven talent (which has been the strategy for this challenge). Some pics below.

In the Cup, we meat Bayern in the semi final and were destined to be knocked out 1 - 0 until we equalised in the 87th minute to take it to extra time. We then conceded in the 107th minute and i had thought we were gonners but attacking tactics paid off as we equalised in 112th minute and then out of nowhere took the lead 3 minutes later.  Straight to all out defence mode however Bayern managed to take the game to penalties after equalising in the 122nd minute.  By this stage i was flat and proceeded to pens where we won it 5-4 not missing any of ours.  So in the final it was Dortmund who we managed to do the double over during the season.  We had a fit full team to choose from.  It was a tight affair with lots of chances and we were given a penalty in the 38th minute and up stepped 33 yo experience CM Nicholas Harris 3 from 3 this year and also put one away against Bayern in the semis.  Penalty was saved and there were no goals in normal time despite so many chances for both sides. Dortmund pinched one in the 107th minute and that was that so we're back to back runners up.  We missed a really good chance to get a tick for this challenge.

First up is our Brazilian superstar Lanzini who won the top goalscorer and best player of the year award.  Signed for only 22.5m from Sao Paolo.

SE PALMEIRAS 2040

78 games in a season. Almost forgot how long seasons in Brazil are... The season would have been a great success, I crushed almonst all teams from the beginning to the end, but then I lost the only game I had to win this season:

fbc45f0189b331ded18ff8b20cf64bcb.png

I wouldn't say I was better, it was a very tight Libertadores final. Late goal killed me, even more when we had our chances but didn't convert them during the game. About the other competitions, what can I say:

2b65a209d81180b2966d81d92deb7544.png

Serie A, Brazil Cup, Brazil Supercup and Campeonato Paulista, and just missing the icing on the cake for the season to be perfect. Anyway, I will resign and move to Argentina - let's see if I can get Boca or River, or if I go for a longer project with another team. I don't feel like playing another 80 game-season just to add one competition.

Season 2051/52 - VFL Wolfsburg

Heading into the season after our best effort in the bundesliga last year, i had imagined that this was our best chance of winning the title (7th attempt). We started off ok and were near the top, by the half way mark we were sitting in second spot only one point behind the leaders Dortmund with Bayern also right up our tails. After the transfer break, the volume of games started to take it's toll and the lack of depth also showed as we were challenging on all fronts even tho i was trying to rotate the team in the champions league, we still made the semis and lost out to Bayern narrowly. Fatigue starting setting in and we drew games we should have won and lost games we should have drawn and that resulted in a slide down the table and eventually just squeezed in a Champions League spot in 5th thanks to the European Coefficients.  We were also knocked out of the semis of the DFL Pokal so that means 6 seasons in Germany now for no achievements towards this challenge.

Ultimately, it will be the last season with Wolfsburg as the RB Leipzig job came up and i took it with both hands.  Have a whopping 250m transfer budget and more than double the wages allowed than what I had at Wolfsburg.

Season 2035 Review - Club Atletico Miniero - Brazil

This season took ages. I'm used to the 50 plus games in England but this was a 75 game season while also winning the Asian Cup in the early part of it.

We started with the Sate Championship, I used this as kind of pre season thing rotating players in and out while also competing in the Asian cup and sorting out transfers (a 4 week break between season ending and new one starting is brutal) so in the end we finished 3nd in the league stage but did win the knockout part to be crowned winners.

Also during the the State Championship we had the early stages of the Copa Libertadores just to add to the dun, we made it to the group stage fairly easily there we struggled against Sao Paulo (a theme that would continue this season) but finished 2nd and progressed, we made it to the quarter finals where those gits from Sao Paulo knocked us out.

In the Brazilian cup we had a fairly easy run in this, the 2nd leg semi final defeat was because I rotated the entire team after winning the home leg 7-0. We beat a poor Vitoria side in the final.

If all that wasn't enough we also had the regular 38 game league season, we finished 2nd, a massive step up from the 8th place we got last year but ended 10 points behind Sao Paulo, this makes it look worse than it was, we were competing with them all season, usually within a point or two of them till around 10 games to go when we played them away, we fought back from 2 down to make it 2-2 before conceding in the 95th minute (of 94 announced ) to lose we then followed that up by drawing 0-0 at home to the side at the bottom as we fell away. It was a weird season in that we ad the best defence for most of it till the final couple of games where we threw away a 2-0 lead at 80 mins away to Fluminense to draw 2-2 and then a 3-0 HT lead away to Santos to draw 3-3, we also really struggled in front of goal despite new signing Julio Moreno scoring 55 in 58 (33 in 36 league games) another player scoring 20 and 3 others with 15+ goals we managed to underperform our xG by 12 goals! I think the issue was a lack of depth in defence and ST which meant when I did rotate the players coming in were of a much lesser quality and when I didn't rotate those key players tired and struggled in games. Both these issues are areas to focus on this off season.

I got my first job offer already.

Luckily it is a team who haven't played a game yet so the morale should be ok.

I only got offered a 6 month contract which doesn't scream confidence to me but hopefully I can do well and get a longer contract.

Media prediction is to finish 6th which is bottom of the table.

The facilities are poor with limited youth recruitment and only 3,245 capacity stadium.

Hopefully I wont regret this ;)

I managed to get a job offer after 6 months. Every South African team turned me down. Their reputations were much higher than mine so it makes sense.

Eventually, a second-division Chinese team gave us a chance. I've never managed in China before so I'm excited to get started.

Atletico Miniero Season Review 2036 Brazil

After our, somewhat distant, 2nd place finish last season the order of the day during the 3 week off season was to really strengthen the squad so we used the transfer market and coming out of it we had a squad capable of playing twice a week with cover everywhere allowing us to rotate and not weaken the team. In the summer window though we did lose 3 players to European clubs in our wonderful Uruguayan left winger Aguiar to Liverpool on the final day of the European window (and too late for us to sign a replacement) for his release clause. We only had him for 1 year but he was brilliant. I did manage to delay deals till the end of our season for our CB Moura and attacking midfielder Brian Luiz both to Real Madrid.

We dominated the State Championship breaking records along the way, the final was poor and we only ended up winning in due to being the higher seed. We also won the Supercopa on pens to continue our OK start to the season but we were not convincing.

League was a bit odd as we started with 3 straight wins then drew before back to back losses without scoring. The away game away Cortiba was season changing, 1-0 down going into injury time, our 3rd straight loss without scoring then we scored 2 injury time goals to win which started a massive 21 game unbeaten run that saw us go top and stay there, we only lost 1 game for the rest of the season as we set more records for wins and points totals. We also retained the Brazilian Cup despite me never playing our best team in it.

The big one was the Copa Libertadores, there was no early rounds this time thankfully as we went straight into the group stages, we eased through easily enough and had a fairly comfortable run to the final where we would face last seasons old foes Sao Paulo, though this season they had dropped a bit and were over 20 points behind us in the league. The final was a nervy affair as we won with a goal from our Argentine Fernandez to complete a quintuple of sorts (if we include the supercopa and the state title)

During the course of the season I also got the Brazil job after they were knocked out of the Copa America early. We have 4 wins and 2 losses from world cup qualifying so far.

At the end of the season I was looking for a new job, a couple in England looked good at Spurs and Liverpool but I've got other plans (if all works out) for England so waited, Liverpool appointed the current Juventus manager which left that job open so a move back to Europe was on the cards. We sit 4th with over half a season to go but a long way off of Napoli.

We just stayed up by the skin of our teeth with a 7-4 agg Relegation Play Off 2 legged game Vs Club Oriental De Football.

We were rubbish all season and couldn't get any consistency.

I am hoping that the 2nd season there will be a better one but we will see.

Cobresal are a Chilean side who seems an upgrade to my last job with La Luz.

Cobresal in real life are currently top of the second division in Chile so I feel like this is a very good job to get and one that will hopefully help me find some success.

In the game Cobresal are currently 14th in the league and only 3 points behind the bottom team San Felipe.

A decent finish for us with us nearly getting into the play offs.

Hopefully with a full pre-season under our belts we can kick on and get a play off place next season.

Franco Garcia

Garcia was our main man up front with 10 goals from 25 games. I also had another striker who got 10 goals but I cancelled his loan due to a long term injury just before the season ended.

Luciano Ortega

Ortega was our overall best player with the best average rating at the club despite only playing 10 games. I wish he was our player but we had him on loan and his parent club wouldn't let me loan him in again annoyingly.

We surpassed expectations and managed to win the Chilean First Division B.

We will now get to play in the Chilean First Division next season against the big boys.

I will be looking to leave Cobresal as I can't see me doing well in the big league with them so I am hoping for a bigger club to come along so I can take over them and try win the Chilean Cup to get my first achievement towards the challenge.

Season 2052/53 - RB Leipzig

First season with RB given an absolute warchest of 250m pounds to spend and over 1m of wages spare to throw around in order to win everything. The team was pretty good to begin with so had fun spending on world class players bringing in Bednarek from VFL.  Ended up spending 404m with only 40m coming back in. Absolutely nuts the amount of money this club has even compared to the likes of Real and PSG where i managed previously.

Spending that sort of cash only meant that I must go and dominate that league. The season didnt really pay out that way and it was tight the whole way.  We started off hot winning 11 of the first 13 games but then lost a couple games in a row and by the midpoint of the year we were second behind Dortmund by a point.  It looked like being a 3 way race but had always thought that Dortmund would fall away given they havent won the league in the entire save to date.  But i was wrong, it was Bayern that kept slipping up and Dortmund that kept winning. An amazing season by them only losing 1 game in the whole season against VFL in the fourth game.

With 4 games to go we were 1 point behind Dortmund and we played them away. It was a really tight affair that was goaless. We needed to beat them so the title was within our own control. If we lose, the season is pretty much over.  We copped a goal in the 86th minute however that was then disallowed for offside and then we go an miss a penalty in the 94th minute!  Really pissed off at this point.

I neednt be as Dortmund then drew away to Dusseldorf the next game and we overtook them as we won. For the last game of the season, we just had to equal their result at home to Stuttgart whilst they were at home to 3rd place Koln. We were dominating but just could not find that goal and Dortmund twice hit the top of the live league ladder as they drew 2 - 2 and we almost threw the season away drawing 0 - 0.

We also won the champions league which to my absolute delight qualified us for the World Club Champs which were scheduled this year in June. In the knockouts, we trice required big return leg wins against Juventus, Bayern and Man City to overcome defeats.  Winning 5 - 0, 6 - 0 and 4 - 0 respectively. We then beat Real 1 - 0 in the final to record the first ever European Champions League triumph for this club.

During the year I also became manager of Argentina which was extremely close to being a short tenure. The World Cup qualifiers started of horrendously, losing to Colombia 1 - 0, Bolivia 4 - 1, Ecuador 2 - 1, draw with Uruguay 0 - 0 then losing against Colombia again 2- 0.  We finally won a game beating Paraguay at home 1 - 0 but then lost again to Chile 1 - 0.  At this point, we were 4 points out of the qualification zone and even after beating Peru 4 - 0 the next game, the performance rating was rightfully an F with Brazil away the next game. A loss would certainly get me fired but we managed to beat them 3 - 1 which bumped up my rating back to a C+ and back in the qualification zone.

2052/53 World Club Championships - RB Leipzig

Pretty sure this is only the second time playing in this competition with the last time being with Juve (id have to scroll back through the years). The only National tournament that was on was the AFCON which didnt really impact my team (and most others too).

A group containing Al-Shabab and Palmeries where we beat them 6 - 0 and 3 - 2 respectively. We then faced Athletico Paranaense in the quarter final

Quarter Final

Spoiler

an easy 4 - 1 win.  Semi Final against rivals Bayern

Semi Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

5 - 1 smashing.  Loving these result results against them!  In the final we get PSG who won in extra time

Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

a deserved 2 - 0 win only allowing them 1 shot on target

I Got My New Job

Some might see this as a sideways move as I have left one team in Chile top division for another but Palestino are just a lot better club.

image.thumb.png.db10de581c672e0ac3b2679d3b65943f.png

A bigger stadium, better facilities and also a good chance of winning the Chilean cup in my first season with Palestino.

My best player is Gino Infantino and I will build my team around him.

I managed to get the first cup of my career with Palestiono winning the Chilean Cup. We seemed to always get to penalties in each of the knock out rounds including the final. Luckily we won all 3 penalty shootouts.

We managed to get 8th in the league. Mostly because of us apparently getting deducted 6 points due to breaking Match Day Squad rules somehow.

I don't have any memory of doing this but oh well.

Overall a succesful season.

I will be looking for a job with a bigger club now because even though I have qualified for the Copa Libertadores I know the team isn't good enough to realistically win.

I am aiming for a big club in Brazil, Argentina or Chile.

Ive got a question regarding the MLS & CPL and more specifically the US Open Cup/Canadian Championship.

In theory, could I take over a team in the CPL and win the league. Move into the MLS with Vancouver/Toronto or Montreal and win the Canadian Championship with them. Then move onto an American MLS team, win the MLS & US Open Cup, and have all that count as 2 Leagues and 2 Cups?

I don't understand enough about the different competitions, but i think basically, yes and no

Winning the Canadian league with a CPL team (and the Canadian add-on) is obviously fine.

I suppose it would be ok to win the Canadian championship with a MLS team and count it as a domestic cup. The only problem is that I specifically said in the instructions that you can't, (unless you have the Canadian league add-on active). These instructions are in the 3rd post in the thread.

The Canadian Championship (unless you have the official Canadian league add-on), and the league section of the MLS (Supporters Shield) don't count for anything.

So, I'd need to change the rules. Maybe we should. What do people think?

Obviously winning the MLS and Open Cup with a USA MLS team is fine and normal.

Champions!

We won the Chinese 1st division (2nd tier) at the first attempt. It should have been a lot more comfortable such was our dominance, but HGL Ice City only lost 2 games all season and pushed us all the way. We finally secured the title on the last weekend.

Old man Pedersen was our star player in a record-breaking season for him.

I really need a new job soon, the finances and facilities here are terrible, so that's the aim for next season.

Yeah I understood that part, I just thought that I might have found a way to add an extra cup to my potential tally.

In regards to the opening post it is a bit confusing for the Canadian Championship. You say that for a cup to count then all top league teams must compete, all of the Canadian Premiership Teams compete in the Canadian Championship, it just also happens to have the 3 Canadian MLS teams also involved!

Its not a massive issue, but just something that I thought that I would raise.

Here's my starting details. Hopefully I can try to complete this challenge before FM24 drops.

Manager Profile . Club Overview . Active Leagues

This looks like a fantasic team to start at. A very, very healthy budget for this level and the ability to attract some decent players for this league. During the negotiations they agreed to get me started on my coaching badges, so hopefully by the end of the season I will be close to completing my National A licence and will have the ability to look at moving to a different team and start the Champions League charge!!

End of Season 1 Update

League Table . Cup Fixtures

So a pretty easy season comes to an end. We managed to walk the league ending unbeaten and not really having too many problems. The only black mark on the season was unfortunately getting knocked out of the HKFA Cup on penalties (18-17!). We had a pretty good team when I arrived but I managed to improve it buy basically buying all the best Hong Kong players that I could from around the world. The main issue in Hong Kong is that there is a serious lack of quality domestic players which makes it quite hard to compete, although if you have decent/good foreign players then they can make a massive difference. The main difference makers for us in attack were Rodriguez and Donizete.

Looking forward I will probably be looking to leave when my contract expires. It would be a shame to have to resign as I would really like the option to take some of my current staff with me, but needs must and all. I am currently studying for my National A licence, and have a 1* (20%) Continental Reputation so it will be very interesting to see where that can take me.
