  1. Regarding the battery, one of the great additions to MacOS Big Sur is that now the laptop defaults to optimized battery charging where it can keep it at 80% instead of 100%. It's supposed to learn your routine and ramp up to 100% but I don't know how good it is at this. I don't know why it wouldn't just have a setting from say 50-100% and you decide how high to charge it. That being said when this works, it is phenomenal for long term lithium-ion battery life. Keeping it pegged at 100% while plugged in all the time is not at all good for these batteries long term.

    I also have a Tesla (which is like driving an iPhone :cool:) so I did a lot of reading on maximizing battery life, and car also uses lithium-ion batteries. Ideally you want to keep it in the 40% range on the low end, and 70-90% on the high range. Charging it up to 100% before you know you are going on a very long drive is fine, but I time getting to 100% with when I want to leave, I don't even let it sit for a few hours at 100%. I typically leave mine charged to 70% unless I know I need more the next day, and I try not to run it below 40% unless I'm on a long drive. The software allows you to set this, it's not like I have to unplug it when it hits the magic number. It's will be great when MacBooks have that kind of control too, as opposed to having an algorithm try to guess. Tesla does not recommend charging over 90 except for extended trips. And it even has a setting where you can tell it what time you are planning to leave and it will try to time getting to 100% at that time (it usually gets there 30-60 minutes early in my experience).

    For a phone it's not a huge deal, because you are probably trading it in every year or two anyway. But for a MacBook that you might want to get 5-7 years out of, I think it's important to baby the battery when you can, and try to keep it 40-80% and ramp to 100% when you know you'll be unplugging for awhile. I also don't know how the range babying I'm suggesting would work with the 1000 cycle thing. Obviously you'll go through more cycles this way, but I have a feeling you'd be in better shape anyway.

    I probably know just enough to be dangerous here, if someone has more details, better info I would trust them instead!

  2. Hi @yorkie87 I would think you could definitely do better if you set the assignments up yourself. You started from scratch it takes awhile to get a scout full knowledge of a country, I would guess 2 seasons maybe? But I've never really looked at that that closely. Also not sure of how quickly it degrades once he's not scouting that country.

    The time investment would be in the initial set up, once you get it rolling you could just restart the assignments once they are finished. So you tell John Doe to scout the country or countries you want him to scout for the max number of months, then just restart when it's over (you get an email that says the assignment is finished with a "restart" button at the bottom.

    Plus i'm betting if you do everything including full detail it'll only be feasable for the most top end of desktops, I can't imagine any laptops being able to cope

    I have run my FM20 save on a 4 year old MacBook Pro with 410,000 players and every league including youth on full detail. Saturdays can be slow, but it definitely works. I am in 2026-27 right now in terms of long-term issues.

  4. Interesting to see those two, compared with the M1 that craiigman posted. The M1 is a clear improvement. Benchmark C is the big test for me, since I run all leagues playable with full detail on all leagues even youth. My database has 411,000 players. So these times are really important at that scale.

    I am probably going to upgrade the MacBook Pro to an M1 Mac Mini. I might wait though.

    I am also considering giving my 3rd grader the MacBook Pro for distance learning and taking the iMac from her for FM :)

    I do think these two are holding their own pretty well for 4 and 5 year old hardware.

    late 2016 MacBook Pro 16 GB RAM, 2.9 GHz quad core i7
    late 2015 iMac 32 GB RAM, 4.0 GHz quad core i7

    I ran the benchmarks on both of them, wanted to get an idea for how much improvement the M1 gives and if the emulator and FM20 not being optimized for that processor would offset the processor gains. Was very curious to see if it's worth upgrading the MacBook Pro, possibly to the new Mac mini since I have monitors and don't travel much anymore.

    Well the M1 blew me out of the water:

      Late 2020 MacBook Pro M1, 8 GB - 0:47, 6:39, 6:09 (thanks craiigman!)

    Late 2016 MacBook Pro 2.9, 16 GB - 1:19, 10:25, 10:27

                   Late 2015 iMac 4.0, 32 GB - 0:59, 7:29, 8:18

    I wonder why the MacBook Pro didn't lose as much from Benchmark B to C as the iMac. I ran the benchmarks without rebooting in-between maybe it's a heat thing, and MacBook cools down quicker? Or maybe it's the fusion drive on the iMac?

    I posted these over on the benchmark thread.

    Also, I think that's pretty respectable performance from 4 and 5 year old hardware.

    That's the kind of dedication I like to see!

    Looks like 411,000 players. Estimated game speed is 0.5 stars and that's with 5 star computer performance :-)

    So far FM20, I have 150 days and 11 hours of game time. I leave it on most of the time so that's not really accurate as it counts time when I am asleep, etc. I started this save back May 9 and I'm finishing up the 2025-26 season today/tomorrow.

    Processors with more cores do better in the third benchmark because I’ve turned on full detail a number of active leagues.  I very much doubt many people would do that though

    I play with every league in the world on full detail. Even youth leagues.

    Sometimes my “Saturday” takes 30 or more minutes to sim with 800% CPU usage. I try to time it with eating dinner or taking a shower 😀

    Very curious to see how the new Apple M1 does on that 3rd benchmark, would love to get that new Mac mini and get rid of my MacBook Pro.

    Hi @Uncle_Sam this is a great add on! I've installed for realism even though I am playing in England. I play with all playable leagues and like 400,000 players. Wanted to add this because I'm from the US and wanted my local USL team Loudoun United to be in this with real rosters and match sims just to watch.

    But one weird thing with the International Champions Cup for the summer of 2020. I was invited, as Everton, after finishing 2nd in the EPL during 2019-20.

    The schedule is really weird though. It's supposed to run from July 16, through September 2.

    But all that has been played for 2020 are 2 games, that were played August 22, which was after the EPL season started and actually postponed one of my regular season EPL games. It's now September 12.

    756842979_ScreenShot2020-06-12at1_17_24AM.thumb.png.915842adfdc48df0ededba930754f4a7.png

    There are no other games scheduled. The competition just seems to be hanging in purgatory.

    But all of the 2019 games still show if I tick the back arrows in this screen shot. So it's like the 2019 never finished, and the 2020 one won't schedule the other games besides the two that were played already.

    Wondering a couple of things - if this will ever finish. If not, is there any way for me to just kill this one competition through the editor? Maybe I'm missing something in how it's set up? Thanks for any help!

    Just wanted to check on this again to see if anyone has ideas for how to kill this competition. It still shows up every year (I am now in 2025-26) most years only two games get played, it messes with the European schedule because it happens after those seasons start. The prize money doesn’t get paid, even in the rare year where everyone plays a game, etc. it never actually completes the competition or schedules more than one game per team.

    Wondering if there is any way to kill it in an existing save?

  11. This would be a great competition, but the not being allowed to train during it, so players don't even recover after games they just get more and more tired is a disaster. I love that I get some extra games to relearn the tactics, it's like a head start on preseason. Or it could be if the training aspect wasn't bugged.

    Also the travel despite playing in the same city is a pretty big bug too.

  12. @vigourtortoise Just saw this, sorry for the delayed reply.

    so I wanted to know if you still thought a setup like this was advisable for scout organization and if you have refined your system at all?

    I think it could work, sure! One nice thing if you have a big staff is that you'll get experts in each country/region over time.

    On 08/10/2020 at 11:44, vigourtortoise said:

    Also, what do you look for in those scouts?

    Just high JPA, JPP, and adaptability if they are going to be needed in a country where they don't have knowledge. I guess determination is important too, but I have no idea if it really makes any difference.

    I love it have a scout or two with knowledge of a ton of countries, even if they don't have the best ratings. Which leads to

    On 08/10/2020 at 11:44, vigourtortoise said:

    what are the minimum acceptable values for all of these things?

    The best I can find! I care much more about JPA and JPP than anything else. The others are basically tiebreakers. And I try to find scouts with knowledge of different countries. I manage Everton pretty much exclusively so I can get pretty good scouts in fairly quickly. In the early going, since I play without first window transfer budget, I can only look for free agent scouts, since I can't pay the compensation.

    I am finishing up the 2024-25 season now, and I have 25 scouts + the chief scout. I look for good man management in my chief scout as well as getting as close to 20/20 as possible.

    The worst scout is I have is 15/16, but look at his knowledge.

    I have three 20/20, one 20/19 (+ DoF is 20/19), two 20/18, two 19/19, one 18/20, three 18/19, two 18/18, etc.

    I have a 16/18 but he knows all of this:

    205758024_ScreenShot2020-10-17at11_16_55AM.png.79a26b456f5574b5f85e91c8fb4b77e1.png

    As for the setup, to save time, I don't really do it the old manual way anymore.

    I let the Chief Scout run the assignments, and then I set the focuses up:

    General is

    2140019715_ScreenShot2020-10-17at11_19_43AM.png.2bfd70ba53ad4ef86641cb8c5dc32713.png

    And I set up repeating short term focuses:

    1834547588_ScreenShot2020-10-17at11_20_16AM.png.f56c1c69d327b382fa013fb05d3b0535.png

    I do them for 2 months at a time and every time they say they are done, I just restart it. I think I have 10 scouts assigned to the Europe focus and 3 to the UK. These help me spot players early. I get a TON of reports. I have it set to have a scouting meeting every 5 reports and nearly every other day I have 5-12 players to review in the meeting, but again I have 25 scouts.

    I have a no Brexit save this year, so it doesn't do a ton of good to have a specific short term focus for youth from South/North America since they can't get work permits when they are cheap.

    I don't know how efficient the Chief Scout is at getting the scouts to the right countries, etc. but it seems to be working.

    I don't bother looking at anyone less than at least 4 stars (which is really 3-4 stars as a minimum). What's the point? I want to sign players who could some day start.

    I will spend extra money to make my U18 teams better though. Like if I have a gap somewhere I'll sign an "organizational player" who will never play for me but costs like £1 million or something just to make sure that team is good (and my future U23 teams). That keeps them playing in the youth cups, etc. which gets everyone competitive experience, since I rarely loan out my good prospects.

    I try to win EVERYTHING. All of the youth competitions, etc. So I micromanage those lineups. That's drifting out of scouting some, but you do need to scout some decent cheap youth to round out those teams. Even with State of the Art Youth Facilities, great HoYD etc. the academy can't do it all.

  13. I actually liked the hard Brexit better than no Brexit. It was much easier being allowed to register up to 17 foreigners each year. But I could sign the cheap foreign youths without having to wait for them to be good enough to qualify for a work permit. Then after 5 years they would become citizens.

    I did focus on making sure I had my share of UK players and I would really scout the UK under-18s etc. But there was a lot more flexibility for getting South American youth players in with the hard Brexit.

  14. Brazilian player signed July 11, 2020. His contract expires June 30, 2025.

    He'll be eligible for British citizenship July 11, 2025.

    He won't get a new work permit with a contract extension, he's stopped playing internationally - his last game for Brazil was December 18, 2022.

    If he stays at the club without a contract in July 2025, will those extra 11 days count towards his residency? I'd like to know if that will work ahead of time. If not, I think I am going to have to sell him.

    Thanks for any help!

    Does the appeal process kick back to the normal appeal points process? So playing regularly for me would count as 1 point, 2-3 points if his wage is in the top 50% of the rest of the team's top 30 players, etc.?

    Typical England didnt even get through then XD

    3rd in Group B. 1-1-1 and lost the tiebreaker to Jamaica, +1 GD to 0.

    Jamaica beat Burkina Faso 5-1, England only beat them 2-1. They both lost to Spain (England 2-4, Jamaica 1-4)

    In the final group match, England was winning 2-1 when Lewis Baker scored for Jamaica at 90+1. What an England way to go out.

    Then Jamaica gets to extra time in the QF with eventual champion Germany. It was a great World Cup!

    The file you need to edit is:

    YACS2020 Base\graphics\boxes\inner\subtle\no margin\paper.xml

    and you can fix this by changing this code:

        <record id="title_borders" left="0" right="0" top="38" bottom="8"/>
        <record id="image_slices" left="17" right="17" top="17" bottom="17"/>

    to this:

    	<!-- image borders -->
    	<!-- these determine how many pixels any content is inset from each side of the image -->
    	<!-- (for example, in the case of a button, the content would be the text label) -->
    	<record id="image_borders" left="0" right="0" top="0" bottom="0"/>

    	<!-- title borders -->
    	<!-- these determine how many pixels any content is inset from each side of the image when there is a title included -->
    	<!-- (for example, in the case of a button, the content would be the text label) -->
    	<record id="title_borders" left="0" right="0" top="30" bottom="0"/>

    	<!-- image slices determine the points at which the image will be sliced to enable scaling -->
    	<!-- the image will only slice in the directions slicing values are provided for-->
    	<record id="image_slices" left="12" right="12" top="12" bottom="12"/>

    Perfect! Thanks!

    Not a big issue by any stretch of the imagination but I've found that the panels for the 'tree' view of the stages panel in cup tournaments apparently broke at some point between the 0.7 version and the latest one. Is there a simple fix I'm overlooking? I'm not even sure if it's an issue in the skin's code but it probably can't help to be sure.

    Anyone know how to manually fix this? I love looking at the bracket!

    Outside of this issue, the skin is great, I really love it. But fixing that would make it perfect!

    The crash OP is referring to has been recreated by our team and logged internally - we'll provide an update regarding that in due course.

    Appreciate the input too Joey, I'll make people aware of your post if they encounter something similar to see if it helps at all.

    Glad to help! I have two Macs - it did the same thing on the other one - and the same fix worked - without having to reinstall which was nice!

  19. graphics did not crash it.

    set pieces didn't either.

    Taking a big step! filters, schedules, tactical_styles, tactics, and views all at once.

    We are still good.

    Now I've got the editor data - which includes the USA mod from Uncle_Sam. I backed up the config.xml file from editor data just in case.

    Still works!

    On to Skins! Also backed up the config.xml

    Still works.

    Changed the skin to the one I was using previously. That didn't crash it.

    At this point I am down to the languages folders. Copied that too and backed up config.xml.

    I still have not crashed.

    Finally loading my save game.

    Everything looks fine. Even my custom image for Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium!! (I am in 2024 with Everton).

    My custom views are all the same even the column width. My preferences for things like zoom and attribute colors (based on the number) are the same. It's like nothing changed.

    I recreated the user directory through the launch options, launched the game clean, closed it, then moved everything over (piecemeal like I described above - each time I closed the game then moved more folders over just to test it - you can probably just move them all at once) and it all works. That's probably a lot faster than reinstalling, which I'm fairly certain didn't matter. Maybe this will help with diagnosing the bigger issue, between this and the dumps?

  20. OK. I use launch options like this: --user_data_location="/users/joeynumbaz/FM20/" on my install.

    I changed it to --user_data_location="/users/joeynumbaz/FM-20/" (I added a "-" between FM and 20 if that wasn't obvious) and I at least get to the start screen. I've lost (well they aren't in this folder anyway) all my graphics etc. by doing this.

    So now I'll close the game and add back folders one by one, until it crashes! Or doesn't. Maybe that will help narrow it down.
