Potentially, yes.  What's your screen resolution?

So my reccomended display that I'm using is 1366 x 768 on a 15 1/2 inch laptop monitor.

The other options is

1360 x 768

1280 x 768 or 720 or 600

1024 x 768

800 x 600

Are any of them better so I can see the biography on the manager profile because the reccomended display doesn't show this or is the monitor too poor?

Now's not a good time for buying desktops, the best deals are all on laptops at the moment.  For £950.00, I'd say this is probably as good as you'll get right now: https://www.box.co.uk/4Q5S2EAABU-Victus-by-HP-16-AMD-Ryzen-5-16GB-RAM-512_3820917.html

Ok I have narrowed down to the one you suggested and this one

which one is more powerful as I really want a desktop really but if the laptop is more powerful then that's it @kevhamster

Honestly, you don't need to upgrade.  The i7-9700k is still excellent by current standards.  I don't think you'll see anything like a significant upgrade with what is currently available.

1360x768 is the highest resolution there.  But, for a decent amount of info on screen at once you ideally want FHD (1920x1080) resolution at least.

In fairness, it's a pretty close thing between those two so if a desktop is what you really want, £900 for that bundle is a very good deal right now.

Would most laptops these days support this resolution with integrated graphics or would it need the dedicated graphics card?

Maybe you could recommend for me a laptop for at most is £650 but I'd prefer to stay within £550 if it can do 6 nations with medium dB with no overheating.

The perfect laptop for me for FM would be with the smallest monitor possible but to display all information possible on screen, would 14" be the smallest possible? I have never used 3D view I always use comm only with max 2D replays for goals and I don't play any other PC games only Football manager.

Posting this for a friend. He's looking at upgrading his clapped out 10 year old laptop and I'm trying to advise him on what to get considering he only wants to spend around £400 (possibly £500 at a push if the payments can be spread out). He's got very little knowledge of computers I dont want him to go and waste money on some overpriced chromebook that will struggle to run anything

This is the laptop I've suggested based on him playing lots of leagues, only really using 2D graphics and not using it for any other games.

https://www.box.co.uk/M513UA-BQ003T-ASUS-VivoBook-15-AMD-Ryzen-5-8GB-RAM-512_3602781.html

There is a second option I've linked below, but I thought the CPU and the bigger SSD would be worth the extra £50.

https://www.box.co.uk/X515EA-BQ170T-ASUS-VivoBook-15-Intel-Core-i5-8GB-RAM-2_3813204.html

So I wanted to ask if these are good options for the price point or if there are better laptops out there. And if I'm recommending the best of the the 2 laptops I've linked?

You can play any amount of leagues with any processor, it's just the processing speed that will change.

If you look at the benchmarking thread, you'll see that the speeds with that CPU are at the higher end.

Hello, I'm down to these two:

https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-gaming-laptops/Gaming-3-Gen-6-15-AMD/p/WMD00000479#

From what I see the only difference is the clock speed and boost speed not sure which one to pick any help would be appreciated.

I'd go for the Ryzen CPU based one directly from Lenovo, the CPU is stronger.

I'd agree - the Ryzen in the £500 one has more cores and threads and scores a bit higher in the benchmarking sites.  And the higher capacity SSD is always nice.

However, if £450 is his max budget, the other one is still very good for what he wants.

I think they are exactly the same except for processors what do you think would run FM better? Thanks so much.

Are box.co.uk generally the best value when it comes to online? I hadn’t heard of them until coming into this thread.

Hi,

what’s the views on either buying or building a gaming pc in the current climate?

I was thinking of getting the following but with Graphics cards in short supply I’m not sure what to do..

I was thinking of purchasing the 9B893EA1-3991-4555-9047-663860CA0B2D.thumb.png.0570f5dc8a766827d40dca8f63bfaebf.png

not sure how well DDR 4 Ram will work as it’s a DDR 5 mother board..

will prices change with the new generation changes forecast later this year?

I’m comparing prices to what scan sells products and Scan.co.uk are cheaper

Must admit, I forgot about Scan.

But, Box are generally on the better value side of things and they have probably the best sorting options of any of the major online electronics retailers which are the main reasons I refer to them so often.

Of course, we're primarily just speccing things up for people, so if someone manages to find the same thing elsewhere for a cheaper price, that's always a good thing.

The CPU is more important for FM and 8GB RAM is plenty for FM as things stand.

That said, the i5 in the other one is still excellent so if you prefer to go for the machine with more RAM you'd still be getting an excellent laptop.

Hi Kev,

They’ve both gone up by £80-100 before I bought it, doh

I really like the look of the MSI’s do you have any recommendation and a decent deal on them? (Even if I have no knowledge of it being £100 cheaper a week ago, typical Yorkshireman!)

thanks again,

Hi. Long time follower of this thread. Would something like this be overkill for a laptop predominately used for FM? https://www.box.co.uk/82JY0019UK-Lenovo-Legion-5-(2021)-AMD-Ryzen-7-16GB-_3557959.html

Somewhat looking for a bit of future proofing  too (Would prefer the portability a laptop brings than a desktop) but willing to change my mind if the specs match. Thanks I’m advance.

Yep, you're massively overpaying because of the graphics card.

https://www.box.co.uk/4H2B4EAABU-Victus-by-HP-16-AMD-Ryzen-7-16GB-RAM-512_3821919.html

That one has the same CPU and same amount of RAM and is £250 less.  The graphics card is still overkill purely for FM.

Hey @kevhamster- you helped me out with some advice a few years back on a gaming PC, looking to move to a laptop.

What do you make of the below? Do you think it’d comfortably be playing FM?

Better processor - which is key for FM

Not as good Graphics Card - but more than capable for FM.

If you're playing other games you can let us know and we'll see if it is ok for these.

It's also cheaper - so you can have some savings there.

Hello all

I will be buying a new MacBook 14 inch with either the M1 pro 8 core or m1 pro 10 core version with 16gb of ram , my question is will I notice any difference in the amount of leagues I can load between the 8 core and 10 core , I know FM runs on the single core (correct?)

Probably won't be much difference. But when buying Mac buy at the top of your budget. There are zero upgrade options.

Fm works mostly with single core processing, but more cores can be an advantage in some situations.

There's a benchmark thread on the forums and the Mac m1 has been tested. Check out the times there.

Hi all,

I'm thinking about a new desktop (no monitor required), as my current one can only just about manage FM and a couple of other low spec games.

I'm looking for something that will run FM with a good amount of leagues well (plus can have a few other things open at the same time, as I regularly toggle back and forward to watch Netflix/Prime - atm with my current setup, the video will stop a lot) - and the 3 games I am most interested in with these recommended specs (not sure which one is needier):

  • CPU: Intel® iCore™ i5- 4670K or AMD® Ryzen™ 5 2400G.
  • RAM: 8 GB.
  • OS: Windows® 10 Home 64 bit.
  • VIDEO CARD: Nvidia® GeForce™ GTX 1650.
  • PIXEL SHADER: 5.1.
  • VERTEX SHADER: 5.1.
  • DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 4096 MB
  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system.
  • OS: Windows 10 64bit.
  • Processor: Intel i5-8600 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600.
  • Memory: 12 GB RAM.
  • Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 (6 GB VRAM) / AMD RX 580 (8 GB VRAM)
  • DirectX: Version 11.
  • Storage: 75 GB
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 or higher.
  • RAM: 16 GB.
  • OS: Windows 10 or higher.
  • VIDEO CARD: AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT / NVIDIA RTX 2060 or higher.
  • PIXEL SHADER: 5.1.
  • VERTEX SHADER: 5.1.
  • FREE DISK SPACE: 45 GB.
  • DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 4096 MB

I'm not sure how much it would cost - I've had a scan around, but hard to make sense of it.  Thanks for this thread and in advance for the help.

I've been looking at this option;

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/9592227?clickPR=plp:4:20

However with a better CPU this option (below) would add more longevity, would you consider it a better option? Mainly playing FM and some RTS's and maybe games like Divinity original sin.

The top option will absolutely suffice.  Some benchmarks seem to score those two CPUs quite closely, for example: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-11400F-vs-AMD-Ryzen-9-5900HX/4111vsm1449683

Based on that, it's hard to say for sure it's worth spending the extra £200 unless that's easily affordable for you.

I don't see many Dell or HP laptops reccomended is there a reason for this?

I've been looking at the Inspiron laptops and I really like the design so if I got an inspiron 14 or 15 with an AMD Ryzen 5 5500u, integrated graphic, 512GB ssd and 8gb ram there souldn't be any issues should there, like would an Asus Zenbook with the same processor, ram, ssd etc perform any better or worse than a dell inspiron with the same insides?

No specific reason - we base it purely on a basis of spec vs price.  I have nothing against any specific manufacturer and in fact both laptops I personally own are HP ones.

In theory, you should see two different machines with the same spec perform the same (or at least broadly very similarly).

Also would an AMD Ryzen 7 5700u be much better at FM than a Ryzen 5 5500u, £80 difference in the exact same laptop?

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-5500U-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-5700U/4141vs4156

According to that the clock speed is slower on the Ryzen 7 whilst the single thread ratings are very similar.

The Ryzen 7 5700U should definitely process FM faster than the Ryzen 5 5500U.  It scores higher on the single core rating, plus it has more cores and threads.

If you can afford the £80 then I'd say go for it.  But, if you're unsure, the 5500U is still a very decent laptop CPU.

Thanks mate thats awesome.

It would be £470 for a Ryzen 5 5500U or £550 for a Ryzen 7 5700u. Both have 512gb ssd and 8gb ram in the exact same laptop model and both are comfortably within my budget.

So yeah for £80 difference if it's definitely a better processor for FM I'll get that instead for sure. It will be a FM dedicated laptop too for my travels so doesn't the lower clock speed impact the Ryzen 7 with relation to FM or can I just ignore that and focus on the turbo speed which is better than the Ryzen 5?

Hey, a little off-topic.. but, how does the game work in online mode? for example, i have a powerful laptop and my friend has a low performance laptop. If i host the game, does it lower the load on his end? i assume so but we haven't tried yet.
