Coulthard's Jaw
Here we go again. Can England end 52 years* ** of hurt and finally win the big one? Get ready for frustrating team selection, annoying TV commentary, over analysis of wallcharts everywhere to work out England's best route through the tournament, and maybe, just maybe, some surprisingly nice results... England Lets just say it, based on the last 2 tournaments England are back as big dogs on the international stage. Semi Finals in 2018, Runners Up last year, England are expected to go deep once again. Rumours seem to be Garth will go for quite an attacking approach today (we might get 4 attackers in the starting 11!), and Saka to start ahead of Foden (big call). Iran Iran have never reached the knock out stages of a World Cup. They are coached by that fella who once was assistant to Ferguson at ManUtd. They have a record of 2 wins out of 15 played at the World Cup. Their best player is probably Sardar Azmoun who looks a little bit like Maguire imo. If they get a draw today it would be a huge shock. If they won.... Iran are probably best known at the World Cup for this match England Opening Matches England have been involved in some proper odd matches to kick off their campaigns over the years Lineker with one of the worst WC goals ever! TalkSport
Got the set up all sorted in home office. Braced for a boring first 45, steady 2nd half, 1-0 win thanks to a goal in the 70s and then sit back and make it a cagey game despite controlling it for over 70 minutes and having no reason to suddenly drop off. Rob1981
WORLD CUP FACT-WATCH Gareth Southgate and Carlos Queiroz are two of the eight coaches returning to the World Cup with the same countries they led four years ago. The others are Aliou Cisse (Senegal), Dider Deschamps (France), Fernando Santos (Portugal), Roberto Martinez (Belgium), Tite (Brazil) and Zlatko Dalic (Croatia) England have set a new record of qualifying for seven consecutive World Cups without ever missing one. 12 of England’s 26-man squad were in Russia four years ago for the run to the semi finals. Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling also survive from Roy Hodgson’s Brazilian fiasco in 2014, so they have the chance to join a list of about 15 Englishmen to have played at three different tournaments. Luke Shaw was also in the squad for 2014, controversially selected ahead of Ashley Cole at the age of 18. But missed out on selection in 2018. Harry Kane needs to score four in this tournament to equal Gary Lineker’s record of 10 World Cup goals for England. But he only needs two to equal the all-time England goalscoring record which is held by Wayne Rooney (53). Along with Thomas Muller, Harry Kane also has a shot at winning the Golden Boot at two different WCs - this would be a unique feat. Iran have qualified for five previous World Cups without ever making it through the group stage (1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018). But fortunately for them, Scotland are way out in front on this particular metric – eight failed campaigns in total (1954, 1958, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1998). Three Iranian players head into their third World Cup – these are Ehsan Hajsafi, Karim Ansarifard and Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Masoud Shojaei had already achieved this feat four years ago (2006, 2014, 2018), but no Iranian has yet played in four tournaments. Along with a couple of other players, Ehsan Hajsafi and Alireza Jahanbakhsh already share the record for most World Cup games for Iran (6). Either/both could extend this record today or hold it outright if one plays and the other doesn’t. No player has ever scored more than once for Iran at a World Cup. There are eight players with one goal. But one of these is Karim Ansarifard, so if he finds the net today he can take the record outright. Carlos Queiroz joins an elite list with eight other managers who have coached at four or more World Cups. The others are Carlos Alberto Parreira (6), Bora Milutinovic (5) and Helmut Schon, Henri Michel, Lajos Baroti, Oscar Tabarez, Sepp Herberger and Walter Winterbottom (all 4). darren1983
Mount is a better player than people give him credit for, he's been out of form but who hasn't for Chelsea? Smallen
I’d have Foden ahead of Sterling but that’s about it really. CFuller
Here we go... or should I say... HERE WE, HERE WE, HERE WE, GO! Not sure why Foden's not starting over Sterling. Four years ago, Southgate was picking form over reputation, and now he's done a full 180. At least he's actually shown some ambition and switched to a 4-3-3. Yeah... I'm not optimistic about England's chances at this World Cup. Think we'll struggle to break Iran down and scrape a 1-0 win. Edited November 21, 2022 by CFuller Don't forget your nots. You could name about a dozen players more worthy of starting than Sterling based on current form. Sterling is in there on past merits and his bouncebackability. I've no issue with that personally, but let's not go overboard with naming random players as deserving of a start now
