Yeah, I've found it easier to get interviews if I'm not currently attached to a club. I guess teams can sometimes be put off by having to pay compensation to buy out your contract. Sometimes another club has even asked me to resign in order to avoid paying compensation.

Yeah have had 2 interviews right away now I don't have a club so might be something in that

The problem with this though is that you will always get asked why you have resigned from so many positions during interviews. I don't know how much it damage it does to your reputation, but as long as you keep winning things you will keep getting job offers.

Season 4 2024/25 - Cape Town Spurs

Competitions

DSTV Prem - Results 1    Results 2     League Table

I knew we had our strongest squad of the save so far, and was confident we could close the gap on the top 3, I didnt think we could win the title though. We started well and only lost 4 games over the course of the season, add in the fact Kaiser chiefs and Orlando pirates both had poor seasons, it added to the perfect scenario for us to nick the title.

Nedbank Cup - Results

lost in the Semi Finals 3-2 AET to Mamelodi Sundowns

Telecom Cup - Results

Our first domestic cup win beating rivals Cape Town 3-1 AET.

MTN8 - Results

Lost on pens to Orlando Pirates after an entertaining 4-4 draw.

Squad

Squad   Transfers

We had a very busy summer as I was set on taking the team to the next level. Our star man was left winger  Ibrahim N'Goran. He was signed in the summer and has gone from strength to strength. He managed an impressive 15 goals and 17 assists in 32 games. My big worry is we could lose him as he has a £425k release clause and as it stands, isnt interested in a new contract.

Next Season

Our one and only aim next season will be the Champions League but with no South African winner since 2016 I cant see it being straightforward. We have another busy summer ahead and have already agreed deals for 3 new players who should improve us even further.

African Cup of Nations 2025 - Egypt

First Round

Spoiler

Burkina Faso 0-1 Egypt - a tight affair as we dominated but couldn't take our chances

Egypt 3-2 Ghana - again we were the better side and at 1-1 with 20 mins to go it looked like we had failed to take our chances but 2 late goals before an even later one for them gave us the win

Togo 0-2 Egypt - 2 quick goals either side of HT gave us the win as we topped the group

Second Round (if applicable)

Spoiler

Egypt e3-1 Guinea - we played the host nation and again were the better side, I took some key players off in order to rest them and we hit the post 3 times before letting in a late goal taking us to extra time, we grabbed a couple of goals in extra time though to see us through

Quarter Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

Angola 1-2 Egypt - another game where we did our best to mess it up, though this time it was because I took a risk and rotated a lot of the side as we only had 2 days between extra time and this game. A late winner from a corner saw us through

Semi Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

Egypt 1-0 Ivory Coast - our toughest game yet as wonder goal from Mo Salah put us in the final

Final (if applicable)

Spoiler

Ghana 0-0p Egypt - we faced a side from our group but this time we just couldn't get a breakthrough as our tired legs started to catch up with us, thankfully they couldn't score either so we went to pens. Our keeper saved 3 in a row to win us the game and the cup

What's next

I resigned after the final as my time if Africa was over and I had a new job waiting for me.....

During the cup of nations I had interviews for 2 jobs, Suwon Bluerays in South Korea and Shanghai Greenland in China. Shanghai were a former league winner that had been relegated out of the super league and Suwon are one of the bigger sides in South Korea and the job I really wanted. However they picked someone else leaving me with Shanghai. The real reason I went for them despite their relegation is the fact that in the first division I have a transfer budget of 103m and up to 2m a week to spend on wages. I should be winning promotion here and building up for the top flight, this feels a little longer term than I usually do in Asia and with how quickly I was able to knock Africa off the list I hope to spend some time here now

2045/46

manchester-city-england-sep-2018-260nw-1207379491.jpeg.a9234e57f12c2d8485048f5dd946efe8.jpeg

I took over Man City a day after winning the CWC with PSG.

City had somehow finished 7th the season before but had won 2/4 CLs. The squad had some genuine quality however was filled with a lot of rubbish and was very bloated. The squad was about 35 players so it was quite a task keeping up with who to sell, who to loan and so on. By the end of the window I spent 600 million on players and brought in 450 million from sales. I brought in 3 PSG players (2 of whom are also from Brazil), in a rush and were proven quantities. I should’ve brought a 4th in but changed my mind last minute which I’m annoyed I did.

Super Cup- not important to the challenge but i beat Liverpool to give me my second consecutive super cup.

League- this was the main one I wanted this season. Started of really well beating Liverpool away and Spurs at home but then threw away some silly points. I went on a big winning streak of about 12 games or so which opened up a nice lead. By the halfway point, I was 6 ahead of Spurs, 9 ahead of Liverpool and 12+ for the rest effectively getting it to a two horse race with Liverpool an outside shot. I dropped pts over Xmas but everyone other than Chelsea did and from there my lead expanded and I wrapped up the title with 3 games to spare. I lead from start to finish and was never really in doubt. I also broke City’s records for most goals scored in the league, I did this with a few games to go. My record against the big teams was phenomenal as I only lost to Chelsea away, the rest were all wins.

1211802289_ScreenShot2021-11-11at4_26_07pm.thumb.png.a65c3827f5b11bd2fdd4d9bf9346e82c.png

League Cup- I was given a gift of a draw with 3 championship sides and then a very poor Aston Villa side in the SF. In truth I dealt with all these easily and I made the final to vs arch rivals Manchester United. This is where my luck ran out as I got FMed bad. Conceded a free kick in the first few minutes, battered them for 70, got done on the break and lost 2-0 with the shots being about 25-3.

FA Cup- again had a couple of easy early rounds. 5th round was vs Arsenal 3 days after the league cup final. Again I went down early but I managed to create lots of good chances and got the equaliser. I sent  it into ET but couldn’t get the break through so pens it was. Unfortunately I lost so we went crashing out of 2 cups in 3 days.

Champions League- wasn’t really a priority but nevertheless we managed fo win it. I was pretty dominant winning every game bar the second leg of my SF which was a 0-0 draw. The final was an epic, I drew Dortmund again who beat me when I was PSG. That looked set to continue as I was down 2-0 within 20 minutes. My young German superstar who I bought this year (and finished top scorer with 35ish goals) scored an absolute peach from 30 yards. Midway through the second half my RW Batista (who I had at PSG and plays for Brazil for me now) equalised and then in the 94th minute he scored the winner with basically the last kick of the game to give me my second CL of the challenge.

1332805993_ScreenShot2021-11-11at4_26_22pm.thumb.png.6621a17293d0f95f971c1b524a4ad1fe.png

Annoyingly, I would’ve traded the CL for the league cup so I could move on 😂. By plan from now is to stay and to win one to the domestic cups. I still need to win 3 different cups and with City I’ve got the best team in the comp and 2 goes at it. I’ve also hit second on the all time list for hall of fame behind Pep. He stayed at city for ages so won’t be catching him. He also has the stadium named after him.

1200px-Brazilian_Football_Confederation_logo_svg.thumb.png.de94dca1f020b450c70164be3cb3d20a.png

Brazil- won all 18 games of my WC qualifiers. Had one friendly against England which ended 1-1 at their ground so things are looking good. There’s a few older players in the squad but I’ve taken the punt with them rather then binning them off.

I had a fairly straight forward group with Austria and Ghana and despite going down early to Austria, it proved to be so as I finished top with 2 wins. Annoyingly USA came second in their group so I had a difficult first knockout game. We were red hot and scored a few early to ensure the game wasn’t a contest. Up next was Switzerland and again we made light work of them. I was able to make a few changes too to keep the squad nice and fresh. Next game we had England, a team I had historically struggled and was one of the favourites. We started well scoring from a long range shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in off the keeper. That was as good as it got as England battered us and deservedly equalised with 5 to go. ET was much more even and we both had our chances before star winger (Batista, who also scored the winning CL goal) scored in the 110th minute to give us the lead which we held onto. Former team Italy was in the SF, I had beaten them 4-0 in a warmup friendly and I was confident I could do them again. I was the much better side and took the lead twice whilst giving up the lead twice. The game look destined to head to ET before star striker Israel struck in the 88th to give us the lead. I got an injury time Pen to make the final.

I had another former team, France in the final. I started brilliantly and for the first 60 minutes I was completely dominant and had a 2-0 lead. Nerves kicked in as I conceded with 20 to go and then again in the 89th minute. In injury time one of my ageing cm’s (Fabio Rafael) who I decided to take stepped and scored the winner with an outside of the box shot to cap a wonderful tournament for him that justified me taking him and we held on to win the cup. I was happy with the run as I beat 3 times inside the top 5 and 4 in total from the top 10 showing I did it the hard way.

894729697_ScreenShot2021-11-15at6_25_11pm.thumb.png.11c2c2d76b3f51da70b14334ed17b761.png

So that capped a fantastic 6 seasons with Brazil as I ticked off two huge tournaments and my challenge is really heading towards the end. I have really enjoyed this part, mainly cause I was in Brazil before so had lots of formers players. Again, 3 players from Corinthians started the final with one on the bench. Two of my Brazilian players have been with me for both my City and PSG successes too. After the final I resigned and was on the lookout for my next job. The South Korea job was insecure but it never came up. Nevertheless I applied for the Spain job and got it. Ranked 8th I’d consider them outsiders for the Euros but it’s the best available.

2024 Season - Hougang United & Oman Update

d703ddcf5c3131695433321ed511d3ef.png

3rd season down and it's been another fun one.

83c628a5ce42e963e798644b5e6b74a3.png

In the league though we fell short, at one point we were well in with a chance of challenging for the title but we fell away with too many draws. LC Sailors (who we beat twice) ended up running away with it.

Now for 2 pieces of good news.

Firstly is we lifted my first trophy of the save and that's the Asian Confederations Cup. We smashed it all the way, had to play a lot of games but eventually beat Syrian side Al-Wahda in the final 2-1

ee60e0be09fef540b9a0d34355e55d80.png

Unfortunately though it's not the one I need to win for the challenge!

Secondly is we won another trophy and this one does count towards the challenge! Our form towards the end of the season picked up massively and it culminated with us lifting the Singapore Cup in style.

1076d6e1db7a7caeea192585bb3f1494.png

A 6-1 win over Geyland who ended above us in the league, we also beat LC Sailors 3-0 on aggregate in the semis.

So a great season, the Confed Cup win gives us £1m to add to our bank balance, this means the board have given me £200k to spend on new players. I have a good feeling about next season!

Now for a quick update from Oman and we are doing very well. We managed to get ourselves into the final qualifying stage for the 2026 World Cup. We have a tough group with both South Korea and China in it but as the top 4 get a place in the World Cup I have confidence we can get there.

d608442dc26967c6c82a83bed178fd7b.png

3 games in, we've lost twice, to South Korea and China but I feel like we can beat the others in our group.

Los Angeles FC: 2027 Review

My first full season in America was hugely successful as I turned Toronto FC into the dominant force in the nation, winning the MLS Cup to cap off a glorious campaign. Having failed to gain entry into the Champions League as a Canadian side in America though it was time for me to pack my bags and move on. My destination ended up as Los Angeles as I moved from the Eastern conference to the West and a new challenge. The long term target was simple, take LAFC into the Champions League.

My arrival brought a fair bit of activity as I looked to shape the squad into one I felt was competitive enough to challenge near the top of the Western Conference. There was a mixture of foreign imports and home grown talent but as the season started I had confidence that we could enjoy a solid season.

1921687642_ConferencTable.png.6335a01504a6bf3586e360a0f7782cd0.png

We ended up winning the West Conference at a canter and in truth it should’ve been by even more. We started as we meant to go on, stringing together a run of twenty one matches before we finally suffered a defeat. Only two more defeats would hit us though and we ended comfortably top of the pile. Goals were never a problem, aided by the tally of 22 from Brazilian striker Gustavo. Draft pick winger David van der Beck ended up proving a great choice, stepping up and impressing after first choice winger Ezequiel left us midway during the campaign to join Gremio.

Winning the conference put us into the play-offs at the semi final stage and hopes we’re high. We entered it as the dominant force in American football and I had high hopes we could go on and win the MLS Cup.

1935154494_PlayOffs.png.825136e724ad7932509555e6d2dd6cee.png

We opened up against FC Dallas having won once and lost once to them during the regular season. In fact it was then who ended our huge unbeaten run at the start of the campaign. I expected a tough game and we got one. We absolutely dominated the game but needed a 93rd minute strike to rescue a 2-2 draw and take the game into extra time. At the end we’d managed to win, deservedly so with our 30 attempts on goal to their measly 3.

In the final we would play our fiercest rivals LA Galaxy, looking to win and make the MLS Cup final. Much like our semi final we absolutely dominated proceedings but struggled to find the net. We shockingly conceded against the run of play with twelve minutes remaining to fall 0-1 behind. Thankfully we managed to turn it around though. Goals on 82 and 86 minutes completed a late fight back and we won to make the season showpiece.

1979223383_MLSCup.png.a26d821b26829d2b609c9c0392456aa8.png

A fantastic display gave us the victory and another trophy to complete a remarkable campaign. After scoring early we never looked back and thoroughly deserved the win. Back to back MLS Cups for me as a manager, and with two different teams to boot.

Outside the MLS we found ourselves in the Leagues Cup, a competition I lost in the final of last season with Toronto. Much like last time my LAFC side breezed through to the final, including travelling away to my former side and walking away with a 2-0 semi final victory. The final matched us up with Mexican power house Monterrey and I had my reservations. Especially as the game took place shortly after the end of the MLS conference stage and we were missing a whole host of players who were away on international duty,

1357665101_LeaguesCupFinal.png.01ff62bb95e2179d5d2fabeb1323f1c9.png

We put in a fantastic display and we’re actually rather unlucky not to win it without the need of a penalty shoot out. Having taken an early lead it looked like we were going to hold on until some slack defending conceded a poor equaliser. Thankfully penalties were kind to us though and stand in keeper Chris Muhammed who was the hero with a stunning save early on.

The US Cup was the only other competition we competed in this season and it really didn’t go well. We crashed out to Phoenix after a 1-2 defeat in our first match. I was hoping to be much more competitive and next season I’ll definitely be expecting a lot more in this competition.

A brilliant season sees us dominate probably more impressively than my Toronto side managed last season. At times we were absolutely sublime and minus a scare in the Western Conference final against LA Galaxy we never really looked in doubt of winning the lot. We won every trophy we could’ve this season and that feels incredible. We’ve qualified for the Champions League and next season that is my absolute number one target. Hopefully I’ll be here for just one more year so I can grab that one trophy I need and then disappear off to Asia.

On a quick note I was absolutely gutted to see the demise of my former side Toronto FC. They finished way down in 10th in the East Conference and didn’t even manage to qualify for the end of season play-offs. Three different managers spent time their this season and all of them failed to impress. The squad I built there was gutted and only a few of the players I won the MLS Cup with are still there. Hugely upsetting for me to watch them capitulate quite like that within a season of departing.

USA: 2027 Review

Having put in a really disappointing display with Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations I found myself out of work until the USA team won the Hold Cup and found themselves manager less. I took charge with a North American Nations League campaign on the way and an opportunity to throw myself straight into competitive matches with them. Winning the next edition of the Gold Cup was my long term priority but in the mean time the opportunity to lift another trophy certainly wasn’t to be sniffed at.

577000498_NationsLeague.png.73b5f13c9aa17a26909591fe65565c27.png

We cruised our way through a simple enough group by winning all four matches with ease. The toughest challenge was actually the first game against Jamaica that opened up our campaign. A 2-1 win was simple enough but really got our campaign up and running. We will play in the semi finals next year and our performance has also seen us qualify for the next edition of the Gold Cup. A good job well done and a very good start to my reign as manager of the USA.

ok then, with 2months in, I got this job in Chinese First Division League after a weird firing of their existing manager. They were predicted to finish 2nd or 3rd in the division. With 4 games left, they are currently in 7th position with just 3 points behind the playoff spots. Two of those games are against the teams directly above them and hence should be good ones to win. Surprisingly enough, they won the 2 games after their manager was fired with one of them against the table toppers.

Honestly hope I can take them to playoffs and somehow get promoted. If not, I will keep looking for other jobs meanwhile. Using this to pass the game time and also get some coaching badges which they agreed for during the hiring interview.

Well this didn't end well, as I played the remaining 4 games of the league hoping I can get the team to the playoff spots for promotion, but we could only get 1 win from them. Hence I started applying for other jobs and hence they fired me :D Went on holiday for a month and was able to find CT Spurs job who were languishing at 8th position in SA National First Division Has the potential to get promoted through playoffs if not win the title.

Vikeologist's 2021/22 Oldham Season Report

Image result for Oldham FC

I took over Oldham with them in relegation trouble in 23rd after 21 matches, but only 1 point from safety.

It wasn’t a big problem to secure their place, but we stood no chance of making the playoffs. I played young player for much of the end of the season, finishing in 11th. The question is whether we can get promoted next season. We were also 11th in the table for the second half of the season.

I’ve probably kept too many players, but a few are leaving. Hopefully I’ll receive bids for players and be able to improve the financial situation. I have no transfer funds and am wildly over the wage budget. There’s not much good about the situation at Oldham, including not being able to do any coaching badges.

I want to spend one more season in League 2 at the most. I already have an eye out for the next job.

Top Goalscorer - Dylan Bahamboula – 11

Leaving on a free transfer, because he wouldn’t renew his contract. He’ll be a loss. Was using him as an attacking midfielder and he didn’t play at the end of the season.

Highest Average Rating (minimum 10 matches played) – Ash Kigbu – 7.37

A hopefully promising central defender I signed. Not one of our top two in that position, but I gave him 11 matches at the end of the season and his rating is very good.

Man of The Match – Jayson Leutwiler / Dylan Bahamboula - 4

Leutwiler is my goalie. They’re my best 2 players.

Most Valuable Player– Jayson Leutwiler . Bahamboula’s leaving, so sod him.

Cape Town Spurs F.C.png

End of Season Update | June 2022 | Cape Town Spurs F.C.

SA National First Division: Well, a great first proper stint at a club and boy has it been with roller coaster swings. Took over the club being at 8th in the league at half way stage of 15 games played. Won 11 games out of 12 next games to go top of the table. And then the final two games ended up as losses (one of them against the eventual champions). Still managed to finish 3rd in the table and qualify to the SA Premier Playoff Mini League.

Managed to win 2 games in the playoffs and a draw ensured we qualify to the SA Premier Soccer League next season.

0907b391dfb796b733a932f907543251.png

Even though we managed to get promoted, being a cashless club with 0 transfer budget and negative payroll budget, made up my mind to resign and look for top SA Premier Soccer League club jobs. However, being a rookie, just before resigning, went and applied for SuperSport Utd club job being available. So got fired immediately :D Should have waited for two weeks as my contract was over ore should have resigned immediately but got the karma hit me by getting fired :)

SA FA cup: Was able to take them to Quarterfinal only to go missing and lose 3-0 to a much poorer opponent.

Challenge Progress:

Well, two jobs and two firings later, the profile looks dirty, but still with 64% win percentage, hopefully that should make my reputation not bad enough to find another job. Currently holidaying somewhere in a beach with the mis-clicked finger being nursed while waiting for new jobs in the SA Premier Soccer League to pop up. (SuperSport Utd didn't hire me).

And also, got somehow to National C License.

Haven't got any national team jobs either yet.

First time starting this challenge.

Was offered the the Guizhou Hengfeng Zhicheng job, which looked a good starting place. 15th in the Chinese 2nd league, but predicted to finish 5th, with 15 games left to play. They finished 3rd last season and where relegated from from the CSL the season before.

First news item in the inbox after signing the contract.

Bit sneaky by the owner of the club not to tell me before I signed. Bit of Googling it looks like they ran up huge debits with a previous manager and on players wages. Should be an interesting start to the challenge.

I was after one thing and one thing only this season and that was a domestic cup.

I noticed on my scout report that PSG’s players were coming up cheap and I thought that’s strange. Turns out they were broke and in the middle of a takeover. I duly obliged to bring 3 former players with me for bargain prices. I also brought in Lapasset from Barcelona and I got a new GK.

I won the super cup and the community shield to start the season.

League Cup- first crack at a domestic trophy for the season. I had villa first and then a championship side which led to two easy wins. Up next was Everton and again it was an easy win. In the SF I had Leicester and this turned out to be an all time classic. First leg it was 2-2 at their place which I was ok with due to away goals. I battered Leicester but they scored two crackers to win the first leg 4-2 in what felt like they scored with every shot. In the second leg I was up 2-1 but again completely dominating. Leicester scored to make it 2-2 with 7 minutes left and it looked to be done and dusted. This is where the fun began as I scored in the 90th and 91st minute minute to take to ET. But I didn’t even need ET as I scored again in the 94th minute to book a place in the final.

1441252659_ScreenShot2021-11-16at3_49_42pm.thumb.png.4462dd53141c06aa5bb17be3eb845aa0.png

In the final I had a woefully out of fork Chelsea who were down in 6th and Had lost 4 on the spin. I started beautifully as Lapasset scored in the first half. From there we controlled it really well but couldn’t get the second goal and we were made to pay as Chelsea scored in the 89th minute to send it to ET. In ET, it was the same story as we dominated and the subs made a difference as one of them scored the winner with 10 to go and we held on.

So with England was done and it was time to move on. I didn’t resign immediately as I thought I’d finish the season out (league was a formality) and I’d wait to see if anything came up. It did in April as the Newcastle Jets job came up. They were the defending champions but down in 5th with 7 games to go, had a good run home and could easily make top 2. Regardless they looked a shoe in for finals (top 6) so from there it’s only a few games fo try and win the league. The FFA cup is only 5 games and in pre season so it’s another crack at a trophy. I have no intention of doing the season after so I’ll be in and out in no time. By the time I got the job I was actually in 3rd.

I’ll update Spain on my next update too.

USA: Copa America 2028

My season with LAFC is into full swing but for now it’s time to put club football to the side and the focus was on internationals with my USA side. We had the North American Nations League and the Copa America to take part in as I looked to try and get the international stage of my career going off strong. First up was the Nations League where we faced off against Costa Rica in the semi final stage. This was a good opportunity for me to figure out how set my squad was ahead of our Copa America campaign.

1299595280_nationsfinal.png.ad00b683288c6dcc90e5fdb95de31c7f.png

As expected we cruised our way through Costa Rica in the semi final to set up a tricky looking final against Mexico. We entered the game as favourites but only narrowly and was expecting a really tough contest. An early goal from Giovanni Reyna proved enough as we held on to win by the one goal and lift the trophy.

Winning the Nations League may not have been particularly important but it was the perfect build up to the Copa America. My squad proved they could handle pressure and also saw off tough competition in that of Mexico. I felt confident that if we could get players like Reyna, Pulisic, McKennie and Weah performing we could do well in the major tournament. The FA wanted us to make the semi finals which did put a fair amount of pressure on my shoulders.

321987554_Groupstage.png.1dc16c536f78ce75054426e402c8da12.png

We managed to avoid both Argentina and Brazil in the group stage with Uruguay probably our biggest threat. We opened up with an easy enough couple of games and defeated Paraguay 3-0 and then Chile 3-2. Uruguay were third up in a crunch game and we didn’t produce a performance. We fell behind midway through the second half and couldn’t bounce back to suffer our first defeat. A solid victory over Bolivia was the perfect way to bounce back and it sealed our spot in the knockout rounds of the competition. I rested everybody of note for the last game to try and keep them fresh for the next phases of the competition.

knockout.png.6f4e7a384f5201546df821e90bdddf66.png

We opened up with a repeat of the Nations League final as we breezed through Mexico 2-0 to reach the semi finals. Our run would end against Columbia but to be honest it was a harsh exit. We took an early lead in the first half before conceding a sloppy equaliser late in the game. We kept banging on the door but just couldn’t break our opponents down. Some wasteful finishing in extra time saw the game go to penalties where the ever reliable Giovanni Reyna was the only man to miss. Heartbreak for us after a really solid campaign.

My personal vendetta for the Copa America continues to grow but in fairness we should be happy with how it went. I managed to get my side to match the pre tournament objectives of the FA which means I’ll safely be in charge for the upcoming Gold Cup. That tournament is one we should really win unlike this one which would’ve been a right bonus. I declined the job with Mexico in the aftermath of the Copa America, determined to go and win the Gold Cup with this team.

Outside of the national team things are hitting up nicely with my LAFC side. We’re approaching the business end of the season and we’re firmly in the hunt for multiple honours. I won’t go into details yet but the Champions League is about to begin and that’s the one I am truly hunting. We have lost both of our first choice centre backs though. One has departed for Saudi Arabia and the other will leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. That’s really bad timing for us but I am confident in my abilities to replace both with real quality.

End of Season Update | June 2023 | Chippa United F.C.

Well, I was able to get a job at Chippa United F.C. on 12/16/2022, half way through their disastrous start to the season.

918813022_ChippaUtdHire.png.3146f062ecd0b70eab289bf8ce02a683.png

SA Premier Soccer League: Well, with dead last in the league position when I took over, we notched up 7 wins in a row. At one point we got 11 wins out of 13 games as well. Was able to play an attacking playstyle with the squad available and bringing in couple of additions during the transfer window, we challenged for the title at one point only to lose the momentum towards the end after getting knocked out in the SA cup and immediately going on a 3 match losing streak in the league as well and ending up with losing 4 games out of last 5 league games.

However, I will take 6th place finish especially considering where were we in December when I took over.

8d912c98f0f6127cb2d0a5cda9ffd0e2.png

Cup Competitions:

They got eliminated in both SA Super 8 cup and SA Knockout Cup before I took over. However, I had the chance to get something out of the SA FA Cup. Expectedly was drawn with easier opponents and considering they were during the purple patch when I was on a winning streak, secured easy wins in First and Second rounds. However, I do not know what happened, and got hammered 3-0 in the Quarter Final by a team that went on to get relegated from the league. This loss triggered a losing streak in the league as well.

7e0783ecf808dc793799abbd398c487b.png

Challenge Progress: Planning to stay at this club for next season and see if I can try to challenge for the league title or any of the cup competitions by any chance. The squad looks great, but needs small reinforcements in the defense to plug in the holes. The reason to stay at the club and not pursue jobs with any better clubs in the league is mainly due to not taking another chance at getting fired. Instead will try to win something with this club and resign at the end of the contract next season to a better club if needed.

Haven't found any International jobs yet, not sure what's wrong with them. Haven't got a chance to apply for any of them either.

Also, able to complete National B License and currently studying for National A License.

While I can't muster the energy to do a full update, I'm now in January of 2028 after starting this challenge again on FM22, I managed 15 trophies in 20 years on my FM21 save, but I am well on my way to beating that, with 5 trophies already in my first 7 seasons on this edition. That's 3 more than the same stage last time.

Here's a glimpse at what I've managed to win so far;

I'm still in charge of the USA national team, I actually think that I can challenge for the World Cup with this squad, some of the regens I've gotten are immense, and my midfield is stacked. We walked the Gold Cup, as expected and will carry good momentum into the North American Nations League and then 2030 World Cup.

I left Bahia after completing the double, two seasons in Brazil (One with Atletico Mineiro and the other with Bahia) is more than enough, they play way too much football.

I'm studying for my Continental Pro license, and now I'm looking for a job at a club capable of winning in the big 5 leagues or walking a smaller league like Eredivisie, Liga NOS or similar.

2025 Season - Hougang United

Hougang United FC - Wikipedia

After winning last seasons Singapore Cup and ending in great form I had high hopes for a title push for this season, the media also thought so as well as they made us odd-on favourites for the league title.

And that is exactly what happened! We smashed it!

4db87faa74bd3a71ec242a0d847d9316.png

Unbeaten, 9 clear of the nearest challenger, we were incredible and it was really all down to one man.

43cc740ea5feecabf7821978ac8a1fff.png

I signed Di Stasio at the start of last season and he was really good, this season though he gone onto a totally new level. Just look how many goals he's scored! 42 in 30 games, 37 in 24 league games! Madness!!!

After winning the Asian Confederation Cup last season we automatically gained qualification to the Asian Champions League, a nice surprise but unfortunately we were well and truly battered.

a27f49affc805dae16fae49f8417a532.png

Only two wins, both against Abahani, in the four games against the top we were absolutely battered. It just shows you, even though we are by far the best team in Singapore, we are miles and miles off challenging in the Champions League.

So my fourth season down in Singapore and I think it'll be my last, my reputation is now growing which is being helped by not only the league title and confed cup win but also the gaining of my coaching badges, I am now up to Continental C, this should mean I should be able to a much better job, either in Asia, Africa or North America. I'm not sure if I'll resign yet but it is crossing my mind.

Finally, a very quick update from Oman and we have managed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup!

d1427fab05cd772c0ae4a2dbf8676769.png

Obviously with there being an expanded 48 teams in this World Cup it's been slightly easier but I feel we have done really well, we had to beat Lebanon in our final game to qualify and we did exactly that.

Before I start this challenge for FM2022 I just want to double check 2 things.

I have checked the opening post and I have seen you say no to this but I thought I would be cheeky and ask lol.

@vikeologist Is it still now allowed to manage in nations not in the offical game. So I can't manage in Jamaica, Brunei, DR Congo for example.

I am just gutted the only African nation we can manage in this challenge is South Africa.

I think it would make the challenge more exciting if we all managed in different nations. If it is now allowed then I will stick with the rules.

Also do we need to use our real date of birth or do we need to make sure we start as a manager who is no older then 20 years old ?

The age requirement is no longer there. Be whatever age you like.

I'm still reluctant to allow added leagues. It changes the challenge too much. It was something discussed a lot in the early years of the challenge.

Los Angeles FC: 2028 Review

Having won the MLS Cup twice now my time in America was only continuing due to the fact I had guided my Los Angeles side into the Champions League. Frustratingly it runs mid season to mid season though meaning that realistically I had to stay another eighteen months here, and that only if we won it at the first time of asking. Staying this season did give us an opportunity to try and win the US Cup though and chalk off another trophy from the list.

908768823_USCupwin.png.4c2193e416d8f5822a8560c11ff4c653.png

We did indeed manage to win it and to be honest we did it with relative ease. We comfortably navigated our way through the early rounds, including a beautiful turnaround 2-1 victory away at our biggest rivals LA Galaxy. Portland Timbers provided a test in the semi final but the final itself was a one sided affair. New York Red Bulls looked like a really tough challenge on paper but we threw that all out the window. Somehow we failed to take the lead during normal time but we really turned it on in the extra half hour. Three unanswered goals gave us the victory and with it the trophy.

The MLS certainly didn’t go to plan for us this year and my run of MLS Cup victories has come to an end.

707874403_MLSTable.png.160d90dde2ce88339c33c77eff7772a4.png

The league section of the campaign was fine as we stormed our way to the Conference title and with it our spot in the play offs. We definitely weren’t as dominant on the field this time around though. After smashing in 30 goals last season Gustavo managed a rather disappointing 18 this time around. Defensively we weren’t bad but we definitely struggled after we lost our first choice centre back to Saudi Arabia.

369825534_MajorLeagueSoccer_Stages-13.png.15abbcfe695c0bb481de2b7e86601509.png

Even not at our best we managed to take ourselves into the final conference game. We weren’t very good at all during the play-offs but we did ok and to be fair we were only one victory short of making the MLS Cup final match again.

Our Champions League campaign has been pretty comfortable and we’ve easily managed to navigate our way through the Group Stage.

350147062_NorthAmericanChampionsLeague_Stages-5.png.645b0f4508a4e9be396491e857ef6488.png

We managed to win all of our games and we’ve been comfortable throughout. Philadelphia Union provided our biggest test in the last game with a winner takes all match. We left it rather late but in the end an 87th minute goal was enough to ensure we went through this stage by winning all of our matches. The next round isn’t until the new season begins but I am confident that we can continue to impress and hopefully go a long way in the competition.

On top of a pretty decent season we managed to lift another trophy as we won the Campeones Cup against Americas with relative ease.

821437068_CampeonesCup.png.350a13de032ffc3ef949e7b94899607e.png

Effectively a Super Cup against the winners of the Mexican League, a trophy can't be sniffed at and it was pleasing to walk away with yet another honour with this club.

As disappointing as it is to miss out on the MLS Cup I have to grant this season a seriously positive rating. We managed to lift the US Cup and we’ve also navigated our way through our Champions League group with ease. If you’d offered me that at the start of this season I would’ve bitten your hand of. The Champions League doesn’t return now until next season is underway and that’s definitely going to be our focus.

It won’t be easy to strengthen this team over the off season but I will definitely be trying. Having lost our first choice centre back at the midway point were now losing his partner there too. He wouldn’t discuss a new contract with us and it departing us on a free transfer. Bringing in defensive reinforcements is going to be priority. It’s a busy few months to begin 2029 for me as we return to action with LA, and we also have the Gold Cup to prepare for with my USA national side.

Season One - 2022

Bray Wanderers F.C. crest.png

After all sorts of lap top troubles I'm hoping that third time is the charm!

Decided to go a different route this time and went for the Irish first division at the end of their season. I had offers from Cork City, Cabinteely and Wexford but decided to take the offer from Bray Wanderers which proved the right thing to do. We signed well in pre season and romped to the league title with five games to go and ended up with 60 points from 27 games, winning the league and promotion by 15 points.

The league form allowed me to put more focus on the cups, and after a quarter final knock out in the Leinster Senior Cup we actually went on to reach the final of the EA Sports FAI Cup. Despite beating Premier League clubs Dundalk and Bohemian on route we came up short in the final against Irish Champions Shamrock Rovers who beat us 4-1 in the final. It would have been nice to tick off a cup and get into Europe early on but it was never a target so I'm not too disappointed.

I think the cup results mean we should get a comfortable midtable position in the top division next season providing we sign the right players to push us on a little. I've also been able to complete courses for the National C and B licence and am already working on the A licence, so I'm hoping in 12 months time I'll be in a position where I can start looking at a higher level

2046/47

So my season with Newcastle was quick.

Results were very average and I slipped from 3rd to 5th in the 5 games I was there. I won my knockout game but lost the prelim to Minor Premiers Western Sydney Wanderers. Annoyingly the FFA Cup is every 2 years and this was the off year which I did not realise until I took the job.  So I resigned after the loss and took over Benfica.

All is well with Spain. Won my two first Euro qualifiers. I beat England in the SF of the nations league but lost the final to France. Side is looking good for the upcoming Euros and seem to be on par with the best sides in Europe.

2029 Career Update: Los Angeles FC & USA

It’s fair to say that the year 2029 was by far the weakest of my successful career as a football manager. I entered it with high hopes of trying to claim the Champions League with my LAFC side and also the Gold Cup at international level with the USA, in the end I would collect neither. In fact the season would end with me collecting nothing but my p45 and Jobseeker’s Allowance.

At the beginning of the season my LAFC side were well placed to go a long way in the Champions League. In fact we did just that having breezed through the Group Stage by winning all of our games.

1196994963_NACLKnockout.png.98e70b6787805dad0e170a2e2cd1198f.png

A heart breaking away goals exit came at the semi-final stage as we lost out on an all American final with Minnesota by losing to Chivas of Mexico. We did well enough but it was truly gutting to miss out and more so on the away goals rule. One more goal and we would’ve been finalists alas it wasn’t meant to be.

The semi final is also what I would achieve with my USA side at the Gold Cup, which saw me barely hold onto my position as manager.

751881733_GoldCupKnockout.png.7208147c5c7a8ec11806829ca8822e0a.png

We breezed our way through the Group Stage before comfortably seeing of Surinam to reach the semi final stage. The Mexico game saw us dominate from start to finish but we just could not find the net. The football association were devastated, but thankfully allowed me to stay on as manager. Since then we’ve won four straight matches to qualify for the upcoming World Cup with a couple of games to spare. The Gold Cup is still my aim with the USA so hopefully we can give a good enough showing for me to keep hold of my job for the next edition.

Back to Los Angeles and there was very little to write home about. A lack of goals saw my side struggle all season and although we sat in the play off spots for pretty much the entirety of the campaign I was relieved of my duties with just a couple of games remaining. The side would go on to make the play offs without me. In the end I just lost support of the players. A lack of goals cost us and we regularly lost matches in which we completely dominated. It was no different outside of the league either, a defeat early on in the US Cup and also a shaky campaign during the Group Stage of the Champions League.

It’s a case of having a think now and trying to figure out what to do next. The Champions League in North America remains uncollected by me but I think I need a break from the USA for a bit. I’m going to have to return at some point but I think it’s about time for me to head off somewhere new and see what I’m capable of. A poor campaign here has hit my confidence quite hard although I’m keen to get stuck straight back in. For now I’m just going to keep my options open and see what happens in the next few weeks. Hopefully I can walk into a position with a big club somewhere that is somewhat ready made for success. By leaving America it will sure be nice to head into a nation where the transfer rules are much simpler. I’ll return with an update on where I end up when i get my next managerial position.

2029: Job Update

My departure from Los Angeles was pretty sudden and left me feeling somewhat down about what may come next. I’d given up the opportunity earlier this season to leave LAFC for Suwon Bluebirds in South Korea which turned out to be a decision I regretted.

I wasn’t surprised to be sacked though, the last couple of months of my reign really hadn’t been good enough. We were scrambling just to reach the end of season play offs and that’s not good enough. Especially considering the successes I had given this club the two previous campaigns. A whole host of trophies ensured my time was an enjoyable one but now it was time to look forwards. In the end an opportunity came up that I couldn’t pass up and so I am now in new employment with a matter of weeks remaining of the season.

Appointment.png.dd008630ef25c3fbfbd92c6627a4076b.png

Taking the job was a no brainer really as I take a high profile job in china. There’s four games remaining in the season and hopefully I can secure 3rd spot and a spot in the qualification rounds for the Champions League. Finishing higher isn’t going to happen but I’d be happy with third place. I’ve been presented a £100,000,000 transfer budget so hopefully I can strengthen the squad for next season and have a real push for success. I’ve really fallen on my feet with this job.

Finally won the world cup!

WHAT'S NEXT

The one and a half seasons in Belgium has been time wasted. Two runners up finishes in the league and one in the cup means nothing more has been achieved or ticked off domestically. Having grown impatient waiting for the PSG job to come up in France I have moved to ligue 1 runners up Marseille for the 42/43 season.

Internationally with the copa america & world cup now won with Brazil I have resigned and will be looking for a North American or Asian country to manage to get either the gold cup or asian cup of nations won)

Guanghzou Evergrande: 2029 Review

My arrival in china was something that excited me and I felt like I really had manage to fall on my feet by picking up the job with Guanghzou Evergrande. A big club set up for success but somewhat underachieving. I felt this was a perfect opportunity to put together a side capable of challenging for honours quickly and that was something I put in motion immediately. By the time my five matches at the helm had finished and the season concluded, I had already confirmed a total of five signings to join the club. Preparations for next season were well and truly underway.

Fixtures.png.411465d4904d1ffd75b6aa88c915432f.png

My arrival wasn’t met with the honeymoon of a victory but performances have already proven impressive. Defensively I’ve put together a real unit and the lack of a proven goal scorer is all that’s really missing. As soon as I arrived I saw the need for a striker to come in and it proved over my short time at the helm. We have started well though and that’s pleased me.

1208769947_FinalTable.png.3d5ea675d71145f5e0830a621f3b2a27.png

My sole target for the five games was to hold off the fight of DL Pro and finish in third place. The top two were too far clear by the time I arrived but it was important we finished in third to qualify for the Champions League. Thankfully we did that and that lays the perfect platform for what I’m trying to build for next season with this club.

Lusitânia Lourosa 2021/22

After holidaying for part of the first season I was offered an interview with Lusitânia Lourosa. They were 4th in the third tier of Portugal when I took over and looked like they had a good chance of at least achieving the promotion play off stage.

470094459_Screenshot2021-11-22at18_02_27.png.a6ca6c6ee32d6530184045bb5b816be2.png

Unfortunately, I couldn't get anything to work initially, and I actually lost my first game 6-0 and went down to NINE men!! As you can see we didn't qualify for the top 4, but our results did improve significantly toward the end of the season. I have also had two meetings about my future (mostly because I missed the top 4). I was worried at first that a lot of players wouldn't be interested in re-signing with the club due to our lack of promotion.

Big start to next season is needed, otherwise I think I'll get the sack. But look at this email, 5 million to spend is massive and should mean we are in that top 4 at minimum.

Season 5 - Cape Town Spurs 2025/26

Competitions

DSTV Prem - Results 1    Results 2    League Table

Another league title but it was far from a formality. With the main focus this season being the Champions League I rested my first team every week before a Champions League game and we dropped quite a few points because of this. We wrapped the title up on the very last day to seal back to back league titles.

Nedbank Cup - Results

Although not important, I was disappointed to exit at the QF stage.

Telekom Cup - Results

Another disappointment as we lost in the Semi Finals.

MTN8 - Results

CAF Champions League - Results

Our whole season was geared towards success here and it proved to be the correct decisions as we bagged the title at the first time of asking. Beating Egyptian side Al-Ahly 1-0 AET in the final.

Playing Squad

Squad    Transfers

Another excellent season and this team is capable of dominating this league for years to come. Early on in the summer we lost our star man N'Goran and with no time to replace him I worried how much losing him would effect us. Luckily the impact was not as severe as it could have been. Star man this season was Romuald Traore who chipped in with 21 goals and 14 assists.

Next Season

Having won everything needed in Africa I will be moving on to pastures new. I have not decided where as yet but am thinking either Asia or North America. My Manager Profile is up to 3 stars and I am currently studying for the Continental A license so hopefully we can get a decent next job. I have also resigned from my role as Ivory Coast manager, this was done just before the season started.

Hall of Fame

Upon leaving each club I manage I will select the players I think had the most influence on my success for a hall of fame. The 3 from Cape Town are:

Ibrahim N'Goran - was only with us for one season before moving on, but what a season it was. He was the main man as we managed to win a first DSTV Prem title.

Romuald Traore - Another player who I managed for just the one season. But with N'Goran moving on, he made up for the goals and assists loss to lead us to a league and Champions League double.

Brandon Peterson - Signed on a free at the start of our first season in the prem, he went on to make 144 appearances in total and was a mainstay as we conquered Africa.

Neil Zondi 22a -  Part of first youth intake, he went on to become our main goal threat. He scored 63 goals in 93 games in all competitions.

New Job

Appointment

Having stepped down from Cape Town Spurs in June I expected to be on the job hunt for longer than 18 days. Instead I have landed myself a brilliant role at Tigres Unal in Mexico. The 8 times Liga MX winners last won a league title in 2024 so posses a decent squad, have Champions League football and a £22m transfer budget.

Also @vikeologistnot sure if this was the same last year but I am competing in the Champions League and the MX Cup. I remember the teams competing in continental football used to not compete in the cup in Mexico. Not sure if this is a bug or if the rules have changed over the last season or 2.

Season 2025 Shanghai Greeland Shenhua - Chinese Jia League

LeagueThis season took an age to complete and I'll explain why. Basically this side is a decent super league side that had a bad season and were relegated. My plan, and the reason I went for and took the job, was the idea of getting them back up to the top flight easily and spending this season properly scouting in order to bring in players for after promotion. Trouble was that we were so much better than I thought we were going to be and as a result this was easily the most dominate season I've had, and I sometimes found it hard to motivate myself to play as it was just too easy. At won point we won 16 in a row and 13 games without even conceding. Half the goals we conceded came in the final 5 games after we had already won the league and I was playing kids to give them some game time. We did go up though and next season should be harder for us.

FA Cup Ah this makes me feel like I'm cheating, I'm shocked we won this as along the way we beat the current league champions (5th round) the side that won the super league this season (quarter final) and 4th placed (at the time) side (semi final) and makes me feel like this game is bugged. Either that or I'm incredible at FM22. However we did win this for a double of sorts, we played a mid table side from our league in the final and we wont the first leg 8-0 which was handy as for the 2nd leg we had 3 players on international duty and another 4 injured or suspended. Still won 2-0 though! Best part is that winning this puts us in the Champions League already :D

Transfers - Despite having over £100m to spend I didn't really spend anything, mainly free transfers as I knew this squad was good enough to go back up and I wanted to plan ahead properly for after promotion and build the squad that way

Squadand this is why I held back really, squad was very good but mainly it was the foreign player stuff as all ours either retire, go back to their parent club or contract expire this close season meaning I can go out and spend big this Jan on some foreign players to really improve us with a near blank slate which is exciting. The main part of our squad was the front 3 that scored 73 goals between them this season

Key Players

Liu Haojun - young striker we got for free. Basically when I took over I looked at the national team for young players and this guy was there without a club, snapped him up without really knowing anything about him but it worked out well with 34 goals in 33 games
Tyias Browning - Chinese international that was also on a free, brought him in and as I expected was too good for this league
Jiang Shenglong - made the DM spot his own, was very good and chipped in with some goals when needed
Zhou Junchen - the oldest of the front 3, cutting in from the left and scored 15 this season, has wanted to leave since relegation but no bids, would be open to replacing him though
Wu Junjie - 24 goals and 17 assists from the right, spent most of the season wanting to leave too till we won promotion, at 23 he's primed to take the top league by storm next season

What's Next?

I'm aiming for top 4 next season and a run in the Champions League, think it's doable with seeing how we did in the cup this season and what I do hope will be a good transfer window. Also next season shouldn't take me 2 weeks to finish! :D

Guanghzou Evergrande: 2030 Review

My first full season in china has ended and it turned out to be near enough everything I wanted it to be. Having ended last season strongly I set about strengthening the squad to try and have a go at winning the Super League title. In fact my transfer activity was so well received that we actually began the season considered favourites with the bookmakers to do just that. Brazilian striker Edson Jose looked our best singing, joining from the Thai league in a deal worth a measly £1,000,000. Other than that we signed a host of free transfers and entered the season with a squad that looked very strong indeed.

1517847313_SuperLeague.png.4bec3472bb4f726607741b46eb1592b8.png

As you can see we where indeed strong, dominantly so in fact. Nine of my players ended up being named in the Super League team of the season and I was awarded the Manager of the season award as well. Edson Jose was as impressive as I had hoped to, scoring a ludicrous 33 goals in just 31 league appearances. Our sole defeat came to our biggest challengers Shanghai Port in the fourteenth match, coming after we had won all thirteen previously and conceding just a solitary goal. We ended up cruising to the title with three matches to spare.

1638196193_ChineseCup.png.ac2099fcf10831695d5d804664f37420.png

On top of the league crown we managed to cruise our way to the Chinese Cup as well, seeing off Shandong in the final. We were fortunate that the draw was kind to us throughout, but a comfortable 2-0 victory in the second leg at home (after a solid 1-1 away) meant we lifted our second trophy of the season.

The Champions League looks a disappointment for us but actually we put in a pretty decent showing. Beginning in pre-season we did well to get through the preliminary rounds, including knocking out the holders Gwangju of South Korea with a 3-2 victory. The group stage saw us qualify in 2nd place after an unbeaten 3-3-0 record before we lost out in the Second Round to Jeonbuk Motors in a narrow 1-2 defeat. As disappointing as it was our South Korean opposition went on to lift the trophy so it softened the blow somewhat.

All in all I’m really pleased with how things went and much as with Los Angeles I head into a new season with hopes of lifting the elusive Champions League crown. With the right movement in the transfer market I’m positive we can have a good go at it and I’m sure we can improve on this season. Thankfully I’ve chalked off both the league and the domestic cup here so I can literally put all of my focus into trying to win that continental silverware next time around.

Crest.png.364ac4fe3b1eb57ca5a5daadf28ed340.png

The middle of the season saw me take my USA side to the World Cup in Australia. A tournament that would be won by Spain after a 1-0 victory over France. We entered the tournament hoping to do well and for me it was a case of matching the FA expectations of a Third Round spot so I can lead the side into next years Gold Cup. We beat Sweden 3-0 and Algeria 4-2 in our warm up friendlies and headed into the season with high hopes.

The Group stage was actually a huge disappointment for us and we were extremely lucky to qualify. We three away the lead against Ukraine to draw 1-1 late on just a few days after a late goal spared our blushes in a disappointing 2-2 draw against South Africa. Thankfully we qualified though and managed to see off the Ivory Coast after a 4-2 win in the Second Round. Having matched our target we were unfortunate to draw Argentina in the next round although we put up a fight. A 2-2 draw took the game to extra time before we conceded a goal late on to lose out 2-3 and exit the tournament.

I was pleased with our performance in reaching the targets set pre-tournament although we got extremely lucky that two draws managed to get us through the Group Stage. We put up a really good fight against Argentina though showing that we do possess a fair amount of quality. Hopefully we can go into next years Gold Cup and win it having lost out last time out to Mexico in the final. I’m almost certain to resign after that tournament anyways, it would just be nice to leave with my first piece of silverware at international level.

Do you have any idea if the Israeli Toto Cup is eligible for the challenge? I’ve had a look on Wikipedia and it seems to include all the teams from the top division. I’m only going to take the job if this counts as it is the second domestic trophy there.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toto_Cup

Let us know what you think.

Cheers

Certainly looks like it counts. There's a few countries with 2 eligible domestic cups, (Scotland, Malaysia etc) and it's handy to know which ones when you're trying to pick them up at the end of the challenge.

Awesome mate good to hear. Absolutely, the two hits comes in handy at the end of the challenge. Didn’t know Malaysia had two cups so that’s good to know for next time.

Season Two - 2023

Bray Wanderers F.C. crest.png

First season in the Irish top division and it was certainly one with mixed fortunes. We started the season ok before going on a terrible run of 7 league defeats in a row as part of a 12 game run without a win and we plummeted to the bottom of the table. Luckily we managed a couple of new recruits and changed the system and it turned our results around and we stabilised with an 8th place finish avoiding the relegation playoff. I've applied for a couple of jobs through the season but have barely had an interview, so I think I'll look at resigning at the end of next season when my contract runs out.

Cups we failed to tear up any trees reaching just the quarter finals twice. The FAI Cup especially was frustrating, as the semi finals were teams from the lower end of the league so we would have had  a chance but it wasn't to be.

I'm also up to my Continental C licence and am currently studying for the Continental B licence, so again that should help me when I come to move on get a better job.

USA: Gold Cup 2031

After clinching a league and cup double with Guanghzou Evergrande it's fair to say that the club side of my managerial career has been pretty impressive so far. My second full season in China is in full flow, but this update is on the international side of things. Despite all the successes at club level my international career hasn't really got going yet. The mid point of the season in China gave me a chance to put that right though as it brought an opportunity with USA in the Gold Cup. Entering the tournament as one of the favourites and the host nation I saw this as a make or break set of matches for me at international level. We entered ranked 8th in the world and on the back of an appearance in the final two years back. Defeat to Mexico was extremely disappointing back then and they were sure to be one of the contenders again this time around.

Squad selection was a pretty simple challenge for me this time around although didn't come without a couple of interesting calls. Manchester United midfielder Tyler Adams was unfortunately ruled out through injury and that was sure to be a hard one to deal with. We also got somewhat of a coup when we managed to convince Chicago Fire right back Jhonathan to represent us on the international stage. The 25-year old Brazilian is a real talent and would be a useful addition to our twenty three man squad for the tournament.

Group.png.12e11a59c31b671839941dd88c0ac811.png

As expected pre tournament we breezed through the group convincingly and perhaps more importantly keeping everybody fit. A comfortable 3-0 victory over Panama was followed by a Gold Cup record 11-1 victory over Guatemala. Qualification was assured with the last game still to spare and so I made wholesale changes for the final game. It didn't matter though as we won the third game to complete a clean sweep and head into the Quarter Finals full of confidence. For us it was this knockout stage where our season would truly begin though with tougher tests to come.

Knockout.png.5a897b9f5bce834fc7f8a6a594657b53.png

Our run to the final was a fairly straightforward one as we were handed the more pleasant and less challenging side of the draw. The Quarter Final against Trinidad & Tobago was actually a lot more difficult than I thought though. We were only one nil to the good at half time but a red card early in the second half put us into control. We added four goals in the following twenty minutes to kill the tie and put us into the semi finals. As I said the draw was kind as we were drawn with El Salvador, whilst Mexico would face Canada in the other.

The semi-final proved simple enough, and once we took the lead on 19 minutes we never looked back. A Gold Cup final in our home nation awaited.

Final.png.8fd5a09a053a3359bd6a7ce6117a4118.png

The final was an absolutely brilliant game of football and I am absolutely delighted that we managed to do what was needed to get the win and lift the Gold Cup trophy. When we conceded just four minutes in I was worried of a repeat from two years ago but thankfully we found the equaliser within two minutes and then the game changed completely. We controlled the possession for the rest of the first half but the goals proved to be the only real chances of that first period. In the second we looked the better of the sides, but it wasn't until with just fifteen minutes remaining we managed to find the goal. Once we took the lead we quickly added a third from the spot and although we conceded deep into injury time by that stage we had done enough to win the game.

1859199431_TrophyLift.png.e2e53b74a4a52b4102e3bc1b6577f428.png

For me that would be my final game leading the USA side as I decided to go out on a high and resign from my position. After four years in charge i felt that was about all I could achieve with this team. For now I will focus on my job with Guanghzou and wait for a new international position. The World Cup is next year so i will likely wait until the sacking frenzy in the aftermath of that tournament before applying for a new international position. Ideally I want to go somewhere in which I can go in and quickly win a continental competition. For now though i return to China and without those international periods of high travel.

Guanghzou Evergrande: 2031 Review

My second campaign in china has drawn to a close and having won the league and cup double last time around it was all about trying to snatch the Champions League crown and leave Asia with a clean sweep. I was confident that we had enough and the squad was looking extremely strong as we headed into the season. There was a flurry of transfer activity out of the club but we moved to bring in just three new faces. The most notable was winger Young Soo Woo of South Korea who joined us from last seasons Champions League winners Jeonbuk Motors in a deal worth £400,000. We started the season in the best way possible, beating Beijing Gouan to lift the Chinese Super Cup and add another trophy to our cabinet.

League.png.155584fbc28ead62dd00e4487756fc88.png

If I thought that last seasons league win was convincing then this one was even more so. We stormed to the title with minimal fuss to make it two league titles in a row for this club. Edson Jose was yet again clinical up top and ably assisted by winger Giovanny. Defensively we were yet again solid, conceding two goals in a match on just one occasion all league season. We were ruthless and we were even able to win matches comfortably when I made wholesale changes to rest players and keep them fresh.

Cup.png.effec1a8e1e4332a0e3b96b4e531630b.png

Having won the cup last year it was far from a priority of mine this time around. Saying that it’s fair to say that silverware is silverware so when we got as far as the final I was keen for us to finish the job off and lift the trophy.

The Champions League was the main hunt for this season though and I honestly thought this was the year we would do it.

1757269593_ChampionsLeague.png.25ad344f463b44b0dfd429f19b3111f1.png

We did brilliantly to make it all the way to the final before being outclassed and outplayed in the showpiece event. The game was a thriller but our impressive defensive was breached on six occasions and we were forced to leave clutching on to runners up medals. We did have the lead at one stage in the game but it just wasn’t meant to be. We were missing a whole host of players through injury and suspension though and I honestly feel that if we were at full strength we would’ve given a much better account of ourselves. It’s especially frustrating as we had cruised our way through to the final, even beating last years holders Jeonbuk Motors in the Quarter Finals.

Another successful season with this club although losing out in the final of the Champions League does put a bit of a dampener onto it. We picked up plenty more silverware though and this squad I have built really is impressive. We’ve suffered just three league defeats in my two and a bit seasons here and that’s just remarkable. I thought our league win last season would take some beating but we only went and won it again and more convincingly this time.

On the club side of things we didn’t pick up any trophies towards the challenge this season, but the Gold Cup win with the USA means it’s not a wasted season. I’ve signed a new two year deal to stay here in china and the target now is to make sure that we win the Champions League before my new deal expires. I’m pretty sure we have the ability to do so, but this summer becomes an important one for us without a doubt.

Season Three - 2023/24

Logo of RTS Widzew Lodz

After my second season with Bray Wanderers and my intention to stay, I applied for a couple of jobs just to gauge my standing within the game. I had a couple of offers from League Two clubs but then got an interview with Widzew Lodz who were top of the second division in Poland at the halfway point of the season. Whilst I was tempted to stay, the chance to raise my stock with another promotion and a year in the top division in Poland will help me more than having a good season in Ireland so I made the move. We started slow and after five games without a win we went from a six point lead at the top to being level with three other teams, but a run of five wins in a row put us back on track and we won the league in the penultimate game in the season.

Elsewhere we were out of the Polish Cup before I arrived and I obtained my Continental B licence, I've just been granted the course for my A licence so I'm about 12-18 months away from full qualifications. I don't see me doing more than a year in the Polish top flight, my next job after this will be to get my first league title on the board

Alright, time for me to dip my toe into this challenge. Going to try to not jump at the first jobs going and wait a while to see what becomes available. Got a decent amount of leagues running to give me some options early on.

Me: I'm not going to take the first job that appears in my feed.

Also me: Applies for and accepts the first job that appears in my feed.

That job was at University College Dublin in the second tier of the League of Ireland. I took over with 21 of 27 games played, the club had won two games and taken 11 points all season. Big shout out to Cobh Ramblers for having a man sent off 16 minutes into my first game, which allowed a lovely, easy 3-0 victory in my first game to boost morale and we rode that to four wins, a draw and a defeat in the final six games, ending up finishing 8th out of 10 teams. The goal the board have set for next season is a mid-table finish, but with a top-five finish getting you into the promotion play-offs, that's where I have my eyes set for my first full season on the job. My tactic so far has been to get the full backs bombing on whipping in crosses for the front three and it seems to be working in the small sample size we've had.

I think my goal for my time here is to gain some experience and coaching badges before moving on, unless things go unexpectedly well I don't see us winning the Irish top flight or a domestic cup before I head elsewhere.

End of Season Update | June 2024 | Chippa United F.C. | Mali

Wonderful season from club perspective.

SA Premier Soccer League: Didn't expect to win the league at any stage, but then thought I could compete for the title with the squad I had and with few more additions. However, I had a very bad start to the league at one stage having just 3 wins from 12 games including a 7 game streak without a win. However, with change of tactics and addition of a great GK during the January transfer window helped the club to come back to proper winning mentality and finish 4th in the league. Have had a chance to finish as high as 2nd in the league towards the closure of the league stage, but took a call to prioritize a certain cup competition over the league as I lost the chance to finish as league title winners way early into the league stage.

2f95591a40248143ae38479ad2c29ce1.png

SA S8 Cup: Have lost it in first match itself against Sundowns who are still a stage high in terms of club strength.

783a1b7690fc47043c4d1215609b019f.png

SA KO Cup: Was unfortunate again to be drawn against Sundowns in the first round itself and expectedly lost to them.

a18d8a0b2f732656f464dbef31904e8b.png

SA FA Cup: Was able to get favorable draws in this competition and also fortunate to have this cup during my good run of form in the league. Avoided Sundowns somehow this time and they lost in QF against the eventual finalist. Once I reached quarter final and thought I have real chance to win this competition, and hence prioritized it over the league which paid off for the win in the final and to get my first club trophy of my career.

1150316947_ChippaUtdSACupWin.png.8f3e2f4ef67306f6e27ad68203ceb4d1.png

International Team Management: Finally was able to secure a job at international team management. Not really a great team but with Mali being a decent outfit in AFCONs, hopefully could be used as a stepping stone for bigger teams later. Currently managing them in AFCON 2025 qualifiers trying to qualify against Angola, Guinea-Bissau and Burundi.

1207317473_MaliHire.png.796393f148a87e13cae7b868b72c0681.png

Challenge Progress: Glad and happy to secure a domestic cup to start making up the trophy cabinet room. Currently 6 days before my contract runs down, thinking if I should resign from this team and see if anything from a big team comes up. But actually, I don't see them popping up and so, with the additions that I have done to my team late last season, I am quite confident now that this team can compete for the title next season. Will see if I can strengthen even further to the existing squad to bolster those chances of league title.

As per the International team management, intrigued to see how this Mali management goes in for now. Hopefully I can get them to the main AFCON stage 2025.
