  1. I like to loan out my young players when they reach the age of 18 and spend a lot of time looking at each prospective club to check out the personality of their squad, the preferences of the manger (formation, tendencies etc), how many other players play in that same position & whether they have long-term injuries). This helps me choose which club will offer the loanee the best opportunity to develop. I think in real life, a manager (at a big club) would ask a staff member to do this for them (perhaps a scout or the loan manager) & compile a report. Details could then be displayed when looking at the offer from a club. It already displays the standard of the training facilities but I think these other factors are also important.

Bear in mind turning professional includes professional training schedules - a real chance of starting to improve your younger players at last.

You will inevitably lose a ton of money, but that's the board's responsibility, not yours.  So long as you keep to the wage budget and win games, you're doing your job.

    No pressure then!

There have been examples of clubs at this level turning professional, we did it, shambles that it was.

As for Oxford City, they're a club who have risen to this level for the first time in the last decade or so. I don't know if they've any rich benefactors in real life, but they seem to be having a decent year this year, so who knows what they might be planning. I think what I'm trying to say is, that it's not completely preposterous.

Thanks for your thoughts, I'll enjoy the ride then!

In my own save in Northern Ireland I havent requested becoming professional yet as I know we will lose money. Our commercial revenue and gate receipts wont cover the increased wage costs. Although it's probably a fine balancing act as becoming professional increases the chances of becoming successful which will lead to increased gate receipts and commercial revenue.

Thanks for your input. I guess my my real concern is did the board only agree to it because I have a 100% determination attribute? Is it realistic for this particular club to turn professional?

It's good, provided you will be successful and getting them up a few tiers in a short while. Your club will most likely lose a lot of money, but at that level you'll only pick up freebies and loans anyway, so it's not really an issue for you on the pitch.

Thank you! And if I don't get promoted it's going to potentially bankrupt the club a couple of years down the line?

Also, any idea where can I find how much compensation the board paid the former DOF?

    Thanks again for your help!

  6. Hi all,

I've just taken over Oxford City F.C. at the start of FM22. They are currently in the National League South and have a balance of £1,488.

During my interview, I suggested turning the club professional while fully expecting to be turned down but they agreed & now aim for this to happen by the end of May.

This is a bad idea right?

Also, I said that I didn't want to work with the DOF & so they've sacked him. He would have been owed compensation, where can I find how much he has been paid?

I'm wondering whether to simply restart the game & avoid making these sort of requests too early.

    Thanks!

Just as I've stated in another similar thread, we're aware of a problem with the In-Game Editor on Epic and it's something we're working to address as soon as we can. We can't give an exact timeframe, but can assure it's a high priority issue.

Apologies to any of you encountering this and for any inconvenience caused.

Just here to say thanks for getting the pre-game editor fixed!

See, I've never had that scenario after a player has missed just two games, but then I've never managed Mbappe before, maybe it's hardcoded into him that he'll react after such a short time out.

Regardless, I'd be raising that as a bug, that level of interaction should never be happening as quickly as that.

I suppose we're expecting too much. Ideally, the AI would allow Mbappe to infer that he's being left out of unimportant & meaningless games because he's a star player who is being rested. Unfortunately, we're not there yet. I'm not certain but isn't there an option to tell a player that you're going to rest him? That's what a manager would do in real life. I've read footballer autobiographies we're they've moaned about being rested for games so it's not wholly unrealistic.

A good illustration of how broken the current ME actually is. eventhough you properbly intended to proof how high possession numbers possibly can get. It's very notable, that teams that try to accumulate possession due to a conservative passing game, like your own, city, chelsea and some small clubs who play either cautious or some sort of "tiki-taka" can achieve some possession. However, teams that are trying to primarily accumulate possession by winning the ball back quickly like liverpool, ManU and Arsenal dont even appear in the top 8 possession stats and most likely have even less then 50% eventhough they are top 5 teams at the end of the season.

It clearly indicates that the pressing against conservative teams dont work as intended. Another indication is Norwich, who didnt even make it to the top half of the league table but accumulated 54% avg possession (3rd place) with 91% pass completition.

To match this with some real life data, you can see that no team in last years season was able to average more then 90% pass completition over the whole season. While in your save 7 out of 8 teams could achieve 90% or more.

Concluded there is for sure a broken interaction between pressing not working as intended and passing% rates are way too high (for years already)

Just out of interest, what website do you get stats such as these from?

I have a player who complains about training constantly. One minute he want's more attacking technical training, the next day it's defensive tactical training. Now. I can see that players have these complaints from time to time, but this is just too much, it's been going on for half a year.

Do you experience this, and what do you do to solve it?

This is a young regen with five star potential.

    What's his personality type?

  11. I wondered what peoples' thoughts were on using narrow width along with two attacking wide players who cut inside - isn't that rather one-dimensional & easier to predict & defend against? Or is it Muller's link up play that makes this tactic tick?

I ask as I often see recommendations to play one winger to provide width with the IW or IF on the other side of the pitch cutting inside.

Strangely, I had most success when playing with two IF after changing my settings to play with more width. I assumed that this was because the players stretched the pitch before cutting inside - does that sound right?

His trait of gets forward will make him try attacking runs more often even if not told to through instructions so I'd consider that when planning your players movements.

Fast transitions will suit him, with a good support forward to combine with they could be very effective on counter.

Probably dont have a better creator in your squad but a quick flair winger/if could create space for him. dont want to crowd him so other central midfielders wouldn't be "runners", for me they just need to cover and link.

Why would faster transitions suit him more? Because of his speed, agility & balance? My team is more dominant & so I play a 4231 with my front 5 pressing high & looking to quickly counter when they win the ball. This would suit a player like him right? Thanks!

The system of how personalities change has changed in FM21, so this approach can't be exploited like this any more. You can still use the same model, but the results are wildly inconsistent and it's almost impossible to reliably mentor new model citizens.

Rather than every single one of the hidden mental stats and determination being affected each time a player responds to mentoring, in FM21 a random selection of them are, and it can be anything from a single attribute to all of them.

To give an example, I did an experiment at the start of FM21 and I had a young player who was a single point of sportsmanship away from being a model citizen, and despite having 4 mentoring successes over 2 and a half seasons, he never gained the point of sportsmanship that he needed. It's just so wildly random now that it's impossible to rely on and/or predict.

I played 5 seasons of that save and mentored a grand total of 4 model citizens, despite having used to editor to find young players that were already close so I could try the system out again.

I guess that's more realistic. At least we know we'll likely to get some improvement in at least one attribute. Thanks for your update!

Found it strange they gave me a very vague answer and then closed the thread to avoid a discussion starting 🤔

If I remember correctly, the last post he made was attacked by another poster quite aggressively. I can't find the posts now so I'd imagine they've been deleted. I remember thinking at the time that it's the sort of ungrateful response that would put me off helping other players and being a mod & he hasn't returned since. It's a real shame as he's a great guy & if he doesn't return it will be a will lose to the FM community.

  15. A BWM isn’t the best idea for a holding midfielder as he’ll leave his position to chase the ball with no DM behind to cover. I’d switch him to a CM(d). You could also use a DLP(d) if you have someone with good positioning etc & ball-playing skills. In that case I’d also recommend changing your AP to an AM to avoid having two playmakers close to each other. I’d avoid having both the AM & PF on attack duty, one or the other.

As your formation is top heavy, I’d recommend giving PIs to your front four so that they close down as much as possible so that you win the ball back further upfield. For that reason I’d also recommend a higher LOE.

Having two attacking sidemen who cut inside will also allow the position to pack the middle when defending against you. Consider keeping a winger to stretch the opposition.

    Test results:

I setup a quick save with Man Utd and immediately went looking for suitable mentors. I was looking for:

    • High determination and leadership
    • 'Model citizen' personality or similar
    • Very low value/reputation, so that they would accept emergency backup status.

I settled on Jose Vunguidica and David Edwards. Both are exactly the type of mentors I want, and were signed very cheaply. Note that being at Man Utd helps a lot here, it would be more difficult to find players if you were at a smaller club.

    edwards.thumb.PNG.1eb7ea3c7c29d71a79e222accecc6094.PNGvunguidica.thumb.PNG.b49ec84fb101d5d2f9d5e73e1d49c346.PNG

I immediately put them in the U18 squad and setup mentoring groups. Encouragingly, both players immediately became team leaders and had 'significant' effect on all players within their mentor groups. I then went on holiday for a year and waited for the results.....

First up, Charlie McNeill. This is exactly the type of player who should benefit from this strategy. He is a top-quality prospect, but has very low determination and a 'balanced' personality. Below are his attributes before and after 1-year of mentoring. Determination has increased by 2 points and he has also changed personality to 'fairly loyal'. Small changes, but better than nothing.

    mcneill2.thumb.PNG.40bfa1192fdaff73c359f8bcf5e6265f.PNG

Similarly, Joe Hugill. Again, he showed an increase in determination, albeit only a small one (+1).

    hugill2.thumb.PNG.7cc00095694e7ea42b3753caa2f5b452.PNGhugill.thumb.PNG.aee94c827b4a91a576f1fba65ac1cc86.PNG

Players who were not part of the mentoring did not show any improvement in determination during the period. So it does seem to be having some effect.

The one issue seems to be the social groups. Even after 1 year, my two mentors were still not in any social group. Presumably this is because of their age/status realtive to the rest of the U18 squad. I have read that social group has a big impact on mentoring in FM, perhaps this is why the increases seen were relatively small?

If so, I don't think this aspect is particularly reflective of real-life (you don't need to be best mates with somebody to effectively mentor them), but I guess that is a SI's decision which we have to live with.....

So what have we learnt? Signing older players as mentors does seem to be an option which leads to some small gains for your U18 players. Perhaps over several seasons it coudl add up to make a significant difference. But at smaller/medium clubs, it's probably not worth the additional wages to be honest....

Nice. I reckon you'd get even better results if you added a few more experienced professionals to the U18 squad as you'd get those 'influenced by the squad' personality bonuses. This would apply to those youngsters who aren't even being mentored. Also, I've since learnt that 'welcoming' new signings is a quick & effective way to give great personality boosts to new signings (providing you have the right player to welcome them).
