Competitions Sao Paulo State Championship - Results League Table Not seen as important by the board but is a great way to experiment with tactics and develop younger players. Copa Do Brasil - Results We was given the easiest of runs you could ask for. Out of the 5 sides we faced on our way to the title, only 2 were in Serie A and both of these were bottom half sides. Copa Liberatores - Results With Brazilian sides generally dominating this competition I knew we had a good chance and this proved correct as we sealed the title against Atletico Minerio with a 2-1 win in the final. Serie A - League Table Results 1 Results 2 After last seasons title challenge I knew we wasn't too far from the sides above us. I lost 2 of last seasons key men before the season started but this meant we had a decent budget to bring in reinforcements. £48m pound later and I felt I had a squad that should challenge. 1 win from our first 6 games led to a tactical shuffle and we never looked back, as we lost just 1 of our remaining 32 league games to seal the title by 14 points. Playing Squad Squad Transfers The team here is something really special and I will be amazed if the majority of them are not playing for some of the big boys in Europe in the very near future. The majority of the side have already attracted interest or bids from the usual suspects and its only a matter of time before the squad gets ripped apart sadly. My 3 key men this season were: Tafael (AMR) - Has been my key player since arriving and had a sensational season this year. He bagged 38 goals and 24 assists in 54 games. He has been attracting interest from Man City and PSG and although has stuck around so far, I can see him moving on very soon. Cristiano Moraes (ST) - Signed at the start of the season for £6.25m he has proved an absolute steal as he scored 44 goals in 60 games. Aldair Benitez (MC/AMC) - I signed him for Tigres when in charge there and bought him here with me and he has been brilliant. Played as a CM in our 424 formation or as an AMC when we lined up in a 4231 and performs both roles really well regardless. Another player who will be heading to Europe very soon. I also have to mention the following 2 youngsters who should go on to be world class players: Jose Campos (RB) - The 16 year old has played in 40 games for us this season and has been brilliant. Looking forward to following his career as the save progresses. Marinho (AMC/ST) - The young forward has had a brilliant season as my 3rd choice striker. 10 goals and 10 assists in 13 starts is a fantastic return. I keep a shortlist containing ex players I like to keep an eye on Shortlist 1 / Shortlist 2 and all 5 of these along with numerous others will be added. Next Season South American club football is now complete so I have refused to sign a new contract here and will be leaving on 30/12/2030 when this runs out. I need 6 more top leagues and FA Cups with 5 of these being the big 5 in Europe. I'm not sure whether I will head to one of the big 5 just yet or take a job elsewhere. It all depends what comes up and when. International wise I have finally landed my 2nd role in charge of Mexico. The next Gold Cup is next year but Mexico haven't won any of the last 5 editions with The USA winning 4 and Canada winning 1 so it wont be as easy as previous FMs. We are ranked 21st in the FIFA rankings and do have some world class talent to work with though, and I am optimistic regarding our chances. Didn't realise how many different competitions there are in South Africa, and decided that the best thing to do for our first full season in Orlando was to focus on the league, trying to win the title and qualify for the African Champions League, and then worry about that, plus the domestic cup competition, in the second season. And win the league we did. Comfortably. Our signings really complimented those already at the Pirates, and we just had too much quality and ran away with the league. And because we lost early in the cup competitions, I didn't realise until close to the end that we could finish the league season undefeated. I guess I can now say that we are the Invincibles! But I guess this is just the start of our time in South Africa. Now it's all about pushing for that other silverware, and I imagine staying at Orlando Pirates until that happens. Got a domestic cup and the African Champions League to win. So might not win the league, at least probably not unbeaten, in the upcoming season. COME ON YOU BUCS!!! And nothing yet to report with Nigeria. Haven't yet played a competitive game with them. But have some qualifiers coming up, so hopefully we can challenge for some silverware soon. Luckily Israel has one right at the beginning of the season so I bounced between this, Europa League qualifiers and league games. I had some absolute top notch players in my squad, unfortunately one of my gun youngsters got poached. Israel has a severe lack of good players, even for their league so i focused on some free foreign transfers to bolster my squad and fill the gaps.Cup- as I was in Europe I jumped straight to a qualifier against local rivals; Maccabi Haifa which I won 1-0. To be honest it was a dominant performance away from home against one of the favourites and I knew then my team had enough quality to win. The SF and Final were both straight forward affairs and I got the wins necessary to tick off the domestic cup. I contemplated hanging around to see if I could get out of my Europa League group but in truth I really couldn’t be bothered so I resigned and with that the club side of the save is done. I didn't lose a game in my time there which was quite nice to do. On the international side of things I took the France job but now I’ve got 4 long years until the Euros. Hopefully I can win so I can finally have a crack at the Asian Cup.I’m going to take a little bit of a break from this save, I’m itching to do a long term save so I’ve started a new save with Manchester United but with the limitation of only signing British players. Gets way too easy otherwise and I’d love to be able to hang around for a bit. Will pick this up in a month or 2 I’d imagine. darren1983 Posted January 5, 2022 Share Posted January 5, 2022 Red Bull Salzburg Season 2029/30 Review League - This was even more comfortable than I expected it to be as we cruised through the opening period only losing once. We then topped the Champions Group but our form in this wasn't great as we dominated most sides but couldn't score, think we won 7 of our final 10 games 1-0 but was more than enough to secure the title. Cup - pretty easy run to winning this here. Semi final going to extra time as we gave away a silly penalty and then battered them but only scoring once in normal time. Final was nice and easy Europa League - not really important but we gave it a go, we topped our group which was a shock to me but Sevilla beat us in 2nd knockout round. Just awful from us, better side in first half then let them score on a counter attack right on half time, they double the lead 10 mins into the 2nd half, we push and push but give away apenalty with 15 to go. berrers Posted January 6, 2022 Share Posted January 6, 2022 2045/46 - KAIZER CHIEFS - For the first time in this challenge I took the drastic step of declaring my interest in a job that was already occupied. Having done all I could do at Rangers and resigning the kaizer chiefs job was sitting at insecure so made the step of declaring my interest in the position and within 2 days they sacked their long serving current manager of 8 years and I managed to get in. TELKOM KNOCKOUT CUP Managed to tick off this domestic cup as we suffered a first round exit in the other one that would have counted towards it. CAF CONFEDERATION CUP The African Europa League equivalent. DSTV PREMIERSHIP The main objective for the season was to win the league and qualify for next season's champions league. INTERNATIONAL The South Korea job came up as insecure following the failure to get out of their world cup group and despite my attempts to force their hand (by declaring my interest) into sacking the current incumbent they stayed loyal and dismissed my advances... meaning I still can't find an Asian country to manage with the Asian cup on the way this coming season. WHAT'S NEXT All Ten leagues have now been completed and I've now qualified for the last champions league that I need so I feel like i'm slowly closing in on completing at least the domestic side of this challenge... getting an Asian national job of any sort is proving problematic and it is now most likely I wont get into a position before the upcoming asian cup in 47 so will most likely need to wait another 3 seasons for the next one to come around! BigJack Posted January 6, 2022 Share Posted January 6, 2022 Mexico - 2031 Gold Cup Squad Having stood down from my role at Corinthians my attentions were focused on the Gold Cup with Mexico. We went into the tournament with hopes of wrestling the title back from a very strong USA team. The Group Stages were pretty straight forward minus the disappointing draw against Honduras, although I did rest 10 of my starting 11 for that tie as we was already through. Quater Final Spoiler In the QF we were up against El Salvador and managed a comfortable 3-1 win which could and should have been a cricket scores as we failed to put away numerous chances. Semi Final (if applicable) Spoiler In the SF we were drawn against Jamaica and I made the bold choice of playing a rotated side as the final was 3 days away and I knew I would need as fit a team as possible for that tie. It worked a treat as we thumped Jamaica 4-0. Final (if applicable) Spoiler The final was against The USA. They have won 4 of the last 5 competitions and possess a really good team. It was a tight game and I would be lying if I said we were the better side as they carved out the better opportunities and hit the woodwork 3 times. We managed to nick a 1-0 lead from a corner in the 77th minute and I went full defensive mode for the remainder of the game. It was the correct choice as we sealed Mexico's first Gold Cup in 6 attempts. Next Season. I am currently on the lookout for a new club job but currently there are no jobs that really interest me. As far as Mexico are concerned I am leaning towards resigning asap. The next World Cup is 3 years away and I have no real interest in staying here as realistically we are not going to win that. goonergez Posted January 6, 2022 Share Posted January 6, 2022 Benfica SC: 2038/39 Review Having taken charge at the end of last season we came into this campaign full of hope for successes. I also had the African Cup of Nations with my new international job at the Ivory Coast although the less said about that the better. I managed to navigate them through to the knockout stages but we were knocked out by Cameroon in the Quarter Finals on penalties. Unsurprisingly I was sacked from my position at the close of the tournament. We started the season slowly before regaining ourselves and ending the campaign strongly. We were never in a title race but we did at least show some character and finished in a strong enough position. Offensively we were strong and defensively we got better as the season went on. I signed a young Peruvian goalkeeper in the January transfer window and he really helped to solidify our back line. Outside of the league we failed in one domestic cup and did well in the other. The Portuguese Cup saw us reach the Quarter Finals before we crashed out to Sporting Lisbon after a disappointing showing. The League Cup went much better as we made it all the way to the final. We should’ve won the game really and it felt like a real disappointment and let down to lose out. We didn’t play badly but we just didn’t take our chances and all the while we left FC Porto in the game we were in trouble. The Champions League turned out to be our best competition though as we marched our way through to the semi finals before narrowly losing out to Real Madrid. We weren’t expected to get out the Group Stage but flew through the competition to reach a stage nobody felt we were capable of. We comfortable got through the early knockout rounds before meeting Real Madrid in the semis. We were unlucky not to get through Real Madrid as well but I had to be more than happy with how the team performed and it sets us up very well for the future on a continental stage. I’m fairly happy with the season as a whole although it does also leave me feeling a bit wanting. I’ve lost two cup finals with this club now and that certainly does hurt. There was evidence of quick progress though and that is very pleasing. Hopefully we can come back next season and do even better as we try to push on for trophies. We were cruising through the start of our season, and in the preliminary round of the Champions League, we won the home leg 17-0 against UDRA, giving us yet another match where I was free to rotate the side. (Was impressive that FM recognises this, when the news report after the second leg mentions how we had wrapped up the tie in the first match.) And although it doesn't count overall, it was nice to win some silverware early in the season - a good morale boost going into the Champions League group stage. This was also a good win, as the MTN 8 is competed for by the top 8 teams from last season's league, so a good way to know our strength against our title rivals. With our strength in depth, and with rotation keeping the whole squad happy, as well as various players all having good scoring records, we were able to canter to another DSTV Premiership title. This meant that we would be in the Champions League next year, in case we would need to stay another season. But thankfully our time in Africa, at least at club level, is about to end. Because we made it to the Champions League, where we were up against ES Tunis, a team that we played 4 teams in last year's CAF Confederation Cup without beating once. However, today was our day, and we coasted to the trophy as 4-0 winners. (I do think that Africa is a bit weird as only South Africa has the proper depth, with it being the only country that is playable. But alas.) And with that win, hopefully our reputation in Europe is growing. Winning the UEFA Best Coach award no doubt helps the cause. And with it being 2026, we also had competitive football with Nigeria. African World Cup Qualifying does look challenging, with knockout rounds followed by qualifying groups, where only the top team qualifies for the World Cup. Luckily our group wasn't that tough, and we managed to easily get through to the global tournament. Was not keen on the new 48 team tournament being implemented, as it meant that we were placed in one of the hardest groups, coming up against Belgium and Chile. (What I would've done for a Caribbean nation.) We started off with a game against Belgium, and although the scoreline doesn't read too well, we did play well - although we were already 2-0 with only 16 minutes played. We were going to have to beat Chile in order to finish second behind the European powerhouses. And the tie was tense. We went 1-0 down to a Brereton Diaz goal inside 10 minutes. But we grew into the game, and by 62 minutes had seemingly sealed the match, and second in the group. But a silly red card for Troost-Ekong with 15 minutes left made for a nervy ending. But we held on and made it through to the knockout rounds..... ....where we had the tough draw of taking on England. And this game was basically a reverse of the Chile one. We took the lead halfway through the second half, having ridden our luck for the first hour. And eventually our defence caved in, and Kane scored twice to seal the tie for the Three Lions and keep their hopes of ending 60 years of hurt alive. (They ended up losing to Italy on penalties in the quarters!) Onto qualifying from AFCON, I guess a more realistic chance of silverware than the World Cup anyway, and a bigger reason as to why we took the Nigeria job. And in the middle of the World Cup, I found my next job, in a new continent..... .....not quite the established name of Orlando Pirates....... ...but I guess Orlando City was the fitting place where to move to from the Seweto powerhouses. Excited to see what football is like in USA, but the salary rules went right over my head. Either way, I'm excited for job #3. LIONS4LIFE!!!!! We had a total of 35 shots to their 11 throughout the 120 minutes but it wasn't until central defender Ruiz smashed home a shot from the edge of the box following a corner that we could breathe easy. What's next? Hide contents It's been a fantastic ride with Mexico. The lows of being knocked out of the Gold Cup on penalties in the QF against Costa Rica to making the World Cup semi final a year later and then finally lifting the Gold Cup this year. It's a shame to leave but it makes sense for the challenge. I leave the side as the 7th best ranked national in the world, their highest ranking since 2015. On the club front, I was offered an interview with Champions League runners up Man City but declined to have one last go at winning Serie A and the Coppa italia with Juventus (Plus, I've already won all that's needed to win in England). After three seasons of disappointment and near misses with Juventus, having picked up just the fortuitous Coppa Italia title, I decided to leave for Bayern Munich (after a failed bid to take the Sevilla job - the now dominant force in Spain). Considering Bayern have only lost the Bundesliga twice since my career started i thought this would be a walk in the park. It was anything but. I lost the most games I have in a season for ten years and at one point looked destined to be sacked before the end. We somehow managed to put together a run of 12 unbeaten at the end of the season (10 wins and 2 draws) to clinch the title on the final day courtesy of goal difference. It could have been slightly more comfortable had we not thrown away a 3-0 lead in the penultimate game to cling on to a 3-3 draw down to ten men at home to Gladbach. In the Champions League we lost to my old side Tottenham in the first knockout round and in the DFB Pokal we were dumped out in extra time by Hertha Berlin at just the third round stage. On the international front I took charge of Brazil following their disappointing 3rd in the 2040 Copa America. We are yet to be beaten and currently sit top of South American World Cup Qualifying having already cemented our place at the World Cup Finals. As the new season approached I was unsure whether to stick with Bayern. The squad certainly didn't seem good enough to challenge for the Champions League so I'd essentially be playing for the DFB Pokal. I applied for the vacant PSG job and continued about my business as we took part in the Club World Cup - a competition I had already won with Spurs. We made it through to the semi final, somehow escaping a group of Man City and Spurs with two 1-1 draws (Man City and Spurs drew 0-0) before getting offered the PSG job. They had also made it through to the Club World Cup semi final and, despite a rather concerning transfer budget (£7mil), certainly had a better squad as well as the chance to win the Ligue 1 title, so it was a pretty straightforward choice. Now to see if I play Bayern almost immediately should the two teams win their semi... NEDBANK CUP (FA) Didn't win this last season so it was good to add it to the cabinet CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE The final CL of the challenge won! DSTV PREMIERSHIP It's been a while since I had a proper fm'ing so this was probably overdue. 5pts ahead with 2 games left and was unbeaten all season, lost to Orlando Pirates away (fair enough) and on the final day lost a 26 game unbeaten home record to Maritzburg 2-1 INTERNATIONAL Didn't manage to get an Asian country before the Asian cup took place (in which South Korea won) but following on from the competitions conclusion the Australia manager was sacked so I applied and was offered the job... It'll be one for the long haul as the next Asian cup isn't until 2051 :\ WHAT'S NEXT With only 3 trophies left to complete the challenge I just need to tick over before the Asian Cup in 51' somehow and win 2 domestic cups. I will be leaving Kaizer Chiefs as there is nothing left there for me to do or achieve. DomD Posted January 11, 2022 Share Posted January 11, 2022 Season 2 - 2022/23 - Cefn Druids AFC Pre-Season A somewhat frustrating pre-season, as I tried to strengthen the squad for the season ahead. Some that were reaching the end of their contract at other Welsh clubs refused to even discuss a contract because they didn't believe that our squad was strong enough. Got three players in before the season started, but it didn't seem like that would be enough. We did have some interesting prospects in the U19s, some of them would have to take the step up to fill the gaps. 2022/23 Season We were straight in the deep end at season start in the Champions League against Lithuanian side FK Sudova. We managed to hold on to a draw at their place, and it was a bit of a goal fest at home, but we managed to pull out the win. Astana from Kazakhstan were next, and they were just too much for us. Dropping down to the Europa League we faced Greek side Olympiacos. That turned out as expected against a team with resources that far above what Cefn Druids have. But that wasn't the end of the European adventures, next was the Europa Conference League. We managed to get passed Israeli side Beitar Jerusalem and into the group stage. That proved a step too far and we lost every group game. In a few we were absolutely hammered. The amount of games this part-time squad was being asked to play was just too much. The one silver lining for Cefn Druids is that this run in Europe brought in a huge amount of cash. Most frustratingly, in both cup competitions we lost in the first rounds that we were involved in. Both times to teams from the league below. Results in the league were ok. But TNS had strengthened significantly and it was apparent early on that it would take something special to catch them. That didn't happen. Top Player Stats Spoiler Challenge So no trophies. Did manage to convince the board to pay for my National B and A coaching badges during the second half of the season. I had actually been applying for jobs through out the season in some of the European leagues that I have loaded and the MLS, but no luck so far. Tried to add Uruguay and Peru (because they start in January) those didn't work for some reason, but Brazil and Colombia did get added. But they are in the groupstage of the CONCACAF Champions League, so maybe we can still get something out of this season. Meanwhile, with Nigeria, we have qualified for the 2027 African Cup of Nations with 2 of the 6 qualifying group games to spare, so hopefully we can challenge for some silverware on the international stage. The Orlando squad is a lot better than they have played so far, and a simple tactic helps to get the best out of the squad. We went on a solid run in the league, climbing the table and pushing for a playoff spot. But unfortunately it wasn't to be, falling just short of that coveted 7th place. And in the Champions League, we started brightly, but faltered on the last day. A loss to Atlas Guadalajara saw us fall out of the automatic qualification spots and into the Playoffs instead to qualify for the Second Round. But wins against HFX Wanderers and Vancouver Whitecaps mean that we are still in the competition, which continues in 2027. (Was just tough to keep the squad match fit, with these Champions League matches happening after the regular MLS season had ended.) Bring on 2027!! I just went with the default distribution of stats and now I'm thinking I should have moved them all to adaptability. My own save I took the Frankfurt job and now Japan manager. Currently approaching November in 2025, nothing really exciting has happend during in the previous seasons other than I've nearly maxed out my badges. Frankfurt I've slowly been building a team, couple of semi final appearances in German and cup an last season managed to finish in Champion league spots. Will post a proper update when I finish my current season. I'm in two minds as not really approached it as a journeyman and been buying younger players by habit really. Thinking of keeping it as a separate save and starting again. Without giving much away we are in the race for the title just a point behind Bayern and we'll clear of 3rd but they are relentless they just dont lose and I'm yet to beat them in any game. If we can pip them to title this year I will carry on with this, if not think may start again as still feel I've cheated getting the Frankfurt job. darren1983 Posted January 13, 2022 Share Posted January 13, 2022 Santos 2030 Season Review State Championship - This was over before I took charge but they finished 4th and lost in the semi finals League - this went well. I took over with the club in 9th place after 13 games, it took me some time to find my best 11 and then took them some time to get use to our tactics which is pretty standard I'm finding. Once they did we clicked and motored up the league in the final weeks as other teams started to falter with all the games (seriously for like 3 months straight we played every 3 days!) and we managed to grab 2nd spot on the final day on GD. When we're good we're able to beat most sides but when we're off form a bit we really struggle against every one really. 13 points off of Flamengo and that gab is going to be tough to bridge this off season but it's a good target to aim for. Cup - we had won 1 round before I took over and I really focused on this as my thought process was to win it asap and then focus on league and Copa Lib from next season onwards. As a result we managed to win it without ever really facing a good side (6th places Corinthians were the highest placed side we faced) was nice to win this early as you never know with cups, one bad day and you're out. Copa Libertadores - Umm yeah. We had made it out the group stages when I took over so was just the knockouts for me. It's safe to say we were not the great entertainers here as we were very solid and were able to just nick the odd goal here and there and somehow found our way into the final to play 13th placed in the league CA Bragantino (ironic to be facing a Red Bull side considering my last 2 jobs) it was an awful game really, 10 shots between us and only 4 on target (all us) as we scrambled a goal 10 minutes before HT and the game just petered out after the break and we found ourselves as Copa Libertadores winners somehow Transfers - all the ins were done before I arrived (yes that is the Arthur former of Barcelona and Juventus!) we moved some guys on but losing Regis hurt as he was by far our best CB and someone I was planning on building around Squad - much much older than I usually like but the experienced guys were great this season in seeing out games in the cups. darren1983 Posted January 13, 2022 Share Posted January 13, 2022 2031 Asian Cup So this is it. 4 years in charge shaping this squad by pushing young players and pretty much sticking with them and the tactics and building an almost club like set up all leading to this. We have been the best side in Asia by the rankings for the last few years and going into this we were 14th in the world and no one else in Asia even close really. Australia were 30th as the closest side to us so the pressure was on to win Group Stage Vietnam 0-3 South Korea - an early goal from my captain and a second from Jung Sang-Bin had us leading nice and early. Sang-Bin added his 2nd and our 3rd after the break to secure us the win. South Korea 6-1 Malaysia - we rotated here to try and rest players for later on and we cruised to the win. Iran 1-1 South Korea - we did not play well here, dominated but couldn't score, let them score from their first chance and we kept knocking on the door and finally got the goal in the 89th minute to top the group Second Round (if applicable) Spoiler South Korea 4-0 Tajikistan - an early goal and then 2 goals in a minute just before HT had us 3 up by HT, we added a 4th from the spot just after the hour mark to round out the win Quarter Finals (if applicable) Spoiler Syria 0-2 South Korea - two goals from Sang-Bin before HT again was all we needed to book a spot in the semi finals Semi Final (if applicable) Spoiler Japan 0-2 South Korea - the hosts on their own patch was a real battle here. AT HT it was 0-0 but we managed to get a penalty just after the hour mark and grabbed a 2nd on the counter with 15 to go to secure our place in the final Final (if applicable) Spoiler South Korea 5-1 Saudi Arabia - was shocked to face them as assumed Australia would beat them in the other semi a first half hat trick from that man Sang-Bin with another goal from Jung-Hwan had us 4 up by the break and I knew we were winning it. We added a 5th before allowing a late goal in but it was a comfortable final Aftermath I have resigned because nothing left to win but I really did enjoy this side, I really liked that I built the squad up and we have some really good players that I'm going to show you some here: Park Jun-Seok - Young keeper who only broke into the team just before the Asian Cup as keeper was bit of an issue for us as our best keeper is old but had been dropped by his club this season so hadn't played at all. Gave this lad a chance in the friendlies and he did well so I kept him for the tournament and he was excellent. Song Jung-Soo - the right back I gave a debut too when he was 17/18 and stuck him in the side and kept him there. Has been brilliant down the right for us and has played at some decent sized European clubs Kim Woo-Chul - my star. Gave him his debut as a kid and he got a move to United (probably not related to me playing him to be fair) and he's class. I use him as a ball playing CB and he just strolls out the back with the ball spraying passes. He's very good and actually plays for United Ko Jung-Tak - young striker I gave a debut too a few years back, stuck with him and he's a very reliable back up striker. Comes in and scores goals - what more do you need? Jung Sang-Bin - the main man up top. 31 goals in 41 caps (he had 0 goals in 5 or 6 caps when I took over) he's been my main man and finished top scorer at the Asian Cup Park Kyung-Hwan - the CM, got his debut a little later than a few of the others as he needed a little longer to develop but he's been excellent attacking from deep. Signed for Liverpool but again, not sure I had much of a role in it I'm gonna miss these boys but we've got 6 months till the Gold Cup so hoping a job comes up from that. The Art of Drowning Posted January 14, 2022 Share Posted January 14, 2022 Royal AM Season 2021/22 Review So firstly here I am, and after a few failed interviews I was finally given a chance by Royal AM in the South African Premier League. Royal AM are an interesting club, apparently formed in 2021 with the AM standing for Andile Mpisane who is the clubs 21 chairman and centre back/musician They were bottom of the table with 10 games remaining but not too far adrift to make survival a possibility. We started really well and were undefeated in our first 3 games, only to go on a 5 game losing run which made a relegation play off place look likely, fortunately we then got a couple of wins and stayed up without the need of a playoff in the end. The squad was really old and mostly going out of contract at the end of the year so a nice chance to really rebuild. League Table Season 2022/23 Review We let pretty much everyone go, and sold pretty much everyone who wasn't out of contract for a complete fresh start. Risked bankrupting the club by spending over £1.3m on a new squad and bringing in only about £60k in transfers out, but it paid off as we won the league losing only 1 game all season. Star player was 6ft5 Nigerian Central Midfielder Ibraheem Jabaar who somehow managed to bang in 29 goals in 27 starts despite not taking any set pieces, he just seemed to always be on the end of crosses towering above everyone, well worth the £300k fee. League Table Next season the priority is the Champions League and one of the cups, I'm fairly confident we can do it if we don't lose any of our stars. In the end, I didn't really have to wait as Cape Town Spurs, who already had a vacancy, turned out to be happy with my interview and gave me the job right off the bat. Initially tipped for 1st, the club has been underperforming and the board only asked for a top half finish at the end of the season. The squad was good enough though and with the playoffs not being completely out of reach, a good run of form here might well get us promoted. Fixtures | Squad (Part 1) | Squad (Part 2) A good start was followed by a wobble at the end of March but we recovered to win 7 in a row to finish the season. A number of games were close run things that could have gone either way before I settled on a simple 4-4-1-1 formation. Even then, goals were hard to come by and we probably need to improve upon that if we are to do anything in the Premiership. The most annoying part though was not being able to offer players contracts beyond June 2021 and it means a fair amount of rebuilding will be needed just to stay up. The club is also set to lose a number of our best prospects from the Reserves and U21s. So now my attention can fully turn to winning some silverware with Nigeria. And although the starting XI was quite settled heading into the tournament, although Wilf Ndidi did choose to retire after the 2026 World Cup, I decided to ditch the advice of my assistant coach and pick players that were showing good club form. This led to numerous articles in my inbox of the football world commenting on my choices! We were drawn in a group with Egypt, Congo and Libya, and were predicted to exit as quite comfortable winners. And we lived up to those expectation, winning 2-0, 4-1 and 3-1 to top our group quite easily. In the knockout stages we had some tough matches. First, a tight 3-2 victory over Group E runners-up (by virtue of head-to-head) Burkina Faso, a game where Victor Osimhen scored a first half hat trick and then, because we were still tired from the group stages, we sat back for an hour and only just managed to hold on in the end. Then we met Ghana, and although our xG by the end of the match was greater than theirs, our goal came against the run of play in the first half, having defended valiantly to ensure they didn't find the back of the net. We created a lot more in the second half as we pushed for another goal, but ended up only winning 1-0. Again, our players looked tired going into the our semi final clash with Morocco. Consequently, I went for our alternative, more conservative, tactic. Both teams struggled to create chances, and 90 minutes flew by without many chances at either end. But this allowed us to make some changes going into, and during, extra time, as well as reverting to our more attacking approach. And the players reacted, scoring two in the first half of extra time, and we comprehensively dominated in the second to see out the tie and take us through to the final. And in the final, we were up against the mighty Ivory Coast. Again, we went for the more defensive 4-3-3 over 4-2-3-1, wary of their attacking threats. But in fact, the tactic worked supremely, with our midfielders controlling the game. A goal either side of half time from Victor Osimhen, who seems to thrive in big matches, were result of our dominant display. Now my focus returns to Orlando City, and trying to work out how the rules work ahead of the new season, as well as the knockout stages of the CONCACAF Champions League. Additionally, knowing the Nigeria probably won't win the World Cup, it is time to look elsewhere for international jobs. Although the next World Cup isn't until 2030, perhaps there is another continental competition we can get involved in, e.g. Euro 2028. Who knows. We started off well, thrashing TTM in our opening game and gaining creditable draws against both the Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs but a win over Black Leopards was followed by a barren run of form. None of my tactics seemed to work at this point as we went into the mid season break having picked up 1 point from 5 games. The season's resumption wasn't exactly marked with any improvement and with all sorts of luck also going against us, we got smashed by TTM of all teams, despite having a similar xG in that game. Eventually, switching to a flat 4-1-4-1 stemmed the tide as we won our first league games for 4 months. A winless April was then followed by a nice little run of form to finish off the season, with survival having rarely been in doubt despite our dry spells. The club's finances were largely poor for most of the season but Sekhunkhune inexplicably took one of my youth players (who wasn't even highly rated) and paid a fair amount as compensation for it. A new takeover also took place and my wage budget has been increased from €31k p/w to €44k p/w for next season. A big summer is required with a number of players not performing up to standards and having expiring contracts. Turning some of those 15 draws into wins will be the aim for next season. The board also let me do my National B License after a lot of convincing and after completing that, I was allowed to start on my National A License (again, after a lot of convincing!). darren1983 Posted January 20, 2022 Share Posted January 20, 2022 (edited) Season 2031 Santos Review Seeing as I'm now over 10 seasons in I feel like just changing up the way I do my end of season reviews and rather than my standard listing of each comp I'm in I'll just do a couple of paragraphs to cover the season with links showing what I'm chatting about. I may stick to this or I may not, all depending on how I feel when writing it up So the season here in Brazil starts with the State Championship which starts a month after the previous season ends which is fun, as a result there's no real reason to play Pre-season friendlies as the majority of the teams we faced were about the level we'd be playing in friendlies anyway - with the exception of a couple top flight sides here in Sao Paulo. In the end we finished runners up in the league stage but in the final we were beaten home and away by Palmerias - this was actually the start of a run of 4 straight defeats in 3 comps that had me worried about the upcoming season. In the end though I think the issue was I was still putting together my squad so we weren't near our best in this. I hate losing finals though so this annoyed me far more than it should have done. In the league we started slowly, as mentioned we did have a run of 4 straight defeats with the 4th of those coming on the opening day as we threw away a 2 goal lead to lose 3-2 away to Sao Paulo. We actually lost 3 of our opening 10 games as I kept playing around with the team to try and work out exactly what I wanted while also bringing in new players as well as selling others but then from around the 11th game we went on a bit of a Man City type run where we just became ruthless and ground win after win as we went 15 games without losing winning 14 of them in a row. That pushed us ahead of our nearest then rivals Sao Paulo and Flamengo (who would both fall away pretty quickly) and also gave us a lead that no one else would even come close to catching up with. The South American FA though did their best to beat us as during the month of October we had 6 players missing for the Pan-American games which was half our starting 11 which included our top scorer, his back up, our best defender and best CM - this was "shockingly" also the time of the season we suffered most with injuries meaning at times I only had 6 players (out of 12) on the bench and rotation was not an option as we won 2 of 5 games that month but all it mean was we won the title by 14 points and not the 20+ we should have done. Cups we won last season so in the Brazilian Cup we fell at the first hurdle as we played my kids and back ups. In the Copa Libertadores we actually gave it a real go again despite me usually rotating 7 or 8 players per game in this to keep us fresh for the league. In the end we topped our group with ease and made it to the Semi Finals where we were screwed but that dopey international competition as we took a 2 goal lead to Sao Paulo but our weakened team couldn't hold out as they grabbed a 99th minute goal to take us to a penalty shootout where we missed 3 of the 4 we took and they scored all there's. They also won the cup but I'm still annoyed about this defeat. We also had the Supercup which we lost on Pens to Flamengo and the Recopa Sudamericana which we beat Internacional over 2 legs. I did quite a lot of transfer business here and over the course of 3 windows I made a profit while also giving the squad real depth and lowering the average age from over 28 to just under 24. This was a fun squad to build and it's almost a shame I've now won everything in South America. In terms of international jobs the Gold Cup happened this past summer and no one lost their job which was annoying. However in 6 months time there is a Copa America and a European Championship happening so there should be some good level international jobs soon at least. Well as much as I did enjoy Santos I am not sticking around, even in a season we were out of the cup early we still played 72 games so it's time for me to resign and wait for a job in one of the top 5 leagues now. I was out of work for about 4 months waiting for a decent role to come up, I did think I'd have to wait till the end of the season as that's when big clubs usually change managers but then Liverpool role came up. There were 7 games to go when I took over with them sat in 6th spot. The squad was far from ideal in that it was a) not really suited to my preferred formation and b) full of ageing player son big contracts. This is going to be a revolution here. As a result the final 7 games where a mixed bag really, while we beat Chelsea and Arsenal we also lost to Burnley and Southampton. In the end we won 4 and lost 3 which meant we moved up 1 whole place and finished 5th. Does give us a Europa League spot for next season which I will mainly use for a few young players we have that I would like to develop. Otherwise this summer is going to be quite the clear out and a lot of time spent on the transfer market I feel. Need to lower the average age while also improving the squad and adding depth. Going to be a fun challenge and, I know I've said this before but I really do mean it this time, this feels much more like a longer term (3-5 seasons) than every other job I've had so far, mainly as the competition in this league is so tough. vikeologist Posted January 22, 2022 Author Share Posted January 22, 2022 Vikeologist's 2023/4 Season Report Once again, returning to this challenge, possibly only as a one season break from my national save. To be honest the thing that I want from this save is the absolute worst thing to want; to do the challenge quickly. I think this is the way to do it quickly; start in Europe, do the big 5 first and then do the rest. I know most do it the other way round, but the thing is that you have to be in a position to win an international trophy quite quickly. Anyway, I started the year in charge of newly promoted Oldham, and very definitely looking for my next job. An escape didn’t come quickly, but eventually just before the midpoint of the season I was offered the QPR job a division higher. QPR were a bit of a mess. In the relegation places, but also a lot more deadwood to get rid of than normal. I also had to sell our best striker because his contract was running out and his demands were impossible. I also had to loan out a first team player because his work permit renewal was denied. I brought in some players on loan hoping that I would be able to avoid relegation and be able to complete some proper scouting before the summer. At first it looked touch and go because we drew so many matches, but eventually things kicked in and we rocketed to mid table safety with the team I had left, but there are still a lot of problems with the squad. In theory I should be able to bring in a few new players and gain promotion next season, but it’s hard work. I don’t plan to apply for any top division jobs yet, because I want to be able to win the league and cup with my next team, and I doubt I can get that level of job just yet. Incidentally, without me, Oldham fell to pieces. I think they were 4 points outside the playoffs when I left, in 10th. They finished in 18th. Anyway, my player records are going to seem quite bad because the team was rubbish for most of the first half of the season. Top Goalscorer - Macauley Bonne – 9 Barely started for me. I definitely have striker on my shopping list. Highest Average Rating (minimum 10 matches played) – Enock Mwepu – 7.21 A right winger I brought in on loan, so right winger on my shopping list. It’s a big list. Man of The Match – Ilias Chair – 6 Turned down a big offer for him shortly after taking over, because he’s my only even halfway decent left winger, so yeah, shopping list. Most Valuable Player– Rob Dickie I have a lot of central defenders, not to mention a full-back who only signed a new contract on condition that I played him as a central defender, but Dickie is my best player. Last year I was offered 2 African nation jobs, Cameroon and DR Congo, and then the 2 nations were drawn against each other in the World Cup 2nd round (playoff). I took the Cameroon job, which I thought was the correct choice, and we did squeeze past Congo, but the Cameroon side is really poor. We lost our first African Cup of Nations Qualifying match against Cape Verde. We were unlucky, but luck shouldn’t have been a factor. We may very well win all our remaining matches, but it is very clear that we stand zero chance of winning the ACON even if we qualify. There’s a Euro this summer, and I’m hoping for an escape route to emerge. I always say the key to success in this challenge is correctly evaluating jobs before you take them, and I’ve not managed to do that properly with either QPR or Cameroon, although they looked like good bets beforehand. Most transfers for this season are not visible here as apparently they got counted as part of the previous season. Anyway, after an average start to the season, we got smashed by Swallows at home and then followed a nice win over TS Galaxy with a dispiriting defeat against Cape Town City. As we already had a number of attacking midfielders, I ended up switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation and it paid dividends as we went on an incredible run - going unbeaten in the league for 3 months and winning the Nedbank Cup. We still did our best to bottle it though. Chippa United always had games in hand over us due to their continental commitments and were 3 points behind us when we finally played our home game against them (with that match having been postponed 3 times earlier). A draw there seemed to put us within touching distance of the title. However, this came at a time of extreme fixture congestion and a failure to take our chances saw us lose to Stellenbosch. A draw with Orlando followed and Chippa went ahead on goal difference. Having to win against the All Stars, we went behind and could only equalise through a penalty, which should have ended any lingering title hopes but as it turned out, our closest rivals lost 5-2 at Stellenbosch to give us the title. I had an interview with Orlando back when they were down in 11th but didn't get the job. Cross-town rivals (and Champions League winners) Cape Town City have now offered me an interview though... We created a lot more in the second half as we pushed for another goal, but ended up only winning 1-0. Again, our players looked tired going into the our semi final clash with Morocco. Consequently, I went for our alternative, more conservative, tactic. Both teams struggled to create chances, and 90 minutes flew by without many chances at either end. But this allowed us to make some changes going into, and during, extra time, as well as reverting to our more attacking approach. And the players reacted, scoring two in the first half of extra time, and we comprehensively dominated in the second to see out the tie and take us through to the final. And in the final, we were up against the mighty Ivory Coast. Again, we went for the more defensive 4-3-3 over 4-2-3-1, wary of their attacking threats. But in fact, the tactic worked supremely, with our midfielders controlling the game. A goal either side of half time from Victor Osimhen, who seems to thrive in big matches, were result of our dominant display. Now my focus returns to Orlando City, and trying to work out how the rules work ahead of the new season, as well as the knockout stages of the CONCACAF Champions League. Additionally, knowing the Nigeria probably won't win the World Cup, it is time to look elsewhere for international jobs. Although the next World Cup isn't until 2030, perhaps there is another continental competition we can get involved in, e.g. Euro 2028. Who knows. (Not an easy thing when don't understand properly the value of trades and draft picks.) But in the end we put together quite a good team, mainly by prioritising the present and giving up most of our future draft picks. Unfortunately, this whole situation left our Champions League efforts on the edge, as we couldn't register these new players for the knockouts and had lost a significant number of those who played in the group stage last year. This meant protecting the OGs, so that we had a fit and decent team to challenge in the Champions League, with the rest of the squad tasked with getting us into the Playoffs. And this surprisingly did quite well, but unfortunately we were knocked out in the semi finals, to rivals Minnesota United (who went on to win the final). In the midst of this balancing act, I found out that I have now completed all of my coaching badges, so that was a nice consolation! With continental football done, and not to return for at least another year, because of the poor finishing position when I first joined, it was important to get that playoff spot. And in the end, we were one of the first teams to do so, with some of our new signings shining throughout the season - although we did lose in the fourth round of the cup to Inter Miami. And by the end of the regular season, we topped the pile! This was Orlando's best ever regular season finish as well. But we couldn't quite see things all the way through, losing in the Eastern Conference final to NY Red Bulls . Throughout the season, I had, admittedly, been looking at other available jobs in North America, as I am not a fan of the US football system, the trades and drafts, etc. And when the US season was over, I applied to the team predicted to finish second in Mexico, who currently sit 8th. And they offered me the job. So the US stint is over. Some might call it a failure. But it was more of a stepping stone and a learning curve. But on we move to Mexico, where hopefully with a winter league in line with the CONCACAF Champions League, we will have a better shot at winning continental silverware. berrers Posted January 23, 2022 Share Posted January 23, 2022 2047/48 - ADELAIDE UTD - On 29/32... two domestic cups and an international Asian cup required.. off to Australia (didn't realize they play the domestic cup during the pre season of the following season when I took the job) AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE Adelaide finished the previous season 2nd and qualified for the CL. The campaign started well then injuries and a lack of players took its toll. FFA CUP This competition was the main focus of our attention to get the 30th in the bag... During the domestic season I had been waiting for the cup draw ...but it never came and instead started in the pre season of the following season! Fortunately I managed to win it. A-LEAGUE One of the easier league campaigns. INTERNATIONAL - AUSTRALIA - World cup qualifying currently going on for WC 50' in Brazil.... roll on the Asian cup in 51' WHAT NEXT 2 Trophies left to complete the challenge. 1 has to be the Asian Cup and the other has to be a domestic cup. The Asian cup we are now in place with Aus to compete in and bar any disasters at the world cup we should keep our job for that and hopefully (please god I can't do another 4 years) win it! Decided to load up the Asian leagues and try a different route, a few of the minor Asian national team jobs were available and managed to land the Indonesia job. A couple months later landed my first team role as the manager of Tampines Rovers FC in the Singapore premier league. They fine themselves in 6th position in a 8 team league after 10 games. Weird that Mexico has two halves to the season, each with a league and playoffs and a winner. But we join Tigres UANL at the end of the Liga MX Torneo Apertura league stage. The team finished a disappointing 9th, having been predicted 2nd. This meant we had an extra playoff round to contend with. But the players performed well with my tactic, led by the now-36 year old Mexican legend Raul Jimenez. Their class shone through, and we cruised to the title. And this win has helped us personally climb up the Hall of Fame ranks, and we now feature in the Top 10 English managers of all time! When it came to the Liga MX Torneo Clausura, we performed well across the league stage, finishing second after the 17 games. Our playoffs went well, and drew us to meet Cruz Azul once more in the playoff final. But this time they got their revenge, and this time they got their hands on the silverware on offer. I guess we will get our trilogy (or is it quintology at this point?) as we are scheduled to meet in the pre-season Mexican Champions Trophy. Bring it on. The one disappointment was not challenging at all in the cup. Although we managed to exit our group, we lost in the Second Round to Atlas. Also been looking at strengthening the squad. Have confirmed a deal for a solid winger we had at Orlando FC, and have a couple more in the pipeline, including for some of the Next Gen players since a few of the top 10s are Mexican. But I believe being in Mexico gives us a much better shot to win the CONCACAF Champions League. Guess only time will tell! They had already won the CL in the previous season so it seemed like a no-brainer. After all, they were offering a better squad and money to spend, if required to improve them further. That became important as we signed 17 year old Khumalo, Petersen and De Reuck who all became important cogs in the team. Our season started off well as despite suffering defeat in the Super Cup, we went on to win the MTN 8 and breezed through the qualifying rounds in the Champions League. However, 4 consecutive draws and an annoying loss to AmaZulu meant we were always playing catch up in the league as Stellenbosch built up a head of steam and led by 9 points for most of the season. The CL could have been problematic too - the registration window closing early meant we couldn't register our new signings till January - but we navigated it pretty comfortably till then. Any remaining Premiership hopes were extinguished by defeats to Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United in April and at that point, I simply concentrated on the CL. Al-Ahly were, unexpectedly, quite easy to beat ES Tunis gave us an almighty scare. Abdul Ajagun missed a penalty as a drab first leg finished 1-1 and although we won at home, we owed a lot to keeper Petersen as he brilliantly shut out our opponents. The final was, thankfully, not as close as we comfortably won to seal a 2nd consecutive CL win. A late Khumalo free kick gave us the Nedbank Cup while we were left to rue those April defeats in the league as Stellenbosch collapsed before winning it with the last kick of the season. With Africa done at club level, I resigned. Cote d'Ivoire 2023 & 2024 2023 Fixtures | 2024 Fixtures At about the same time that I joined Cape Town City, the African Cup of Nations ended. A number of African jobs became available as did Japan's in Asia. In the end, only two teams offered me a chance - Ivory Coast and Japan and I went with the former after looking at their respective squads. We had a bit of a slow start as we drew with Venezuela before losing at home to Cape Verde but things got better soon after. Drawing Cameroon this early in the WC qualifiers had me dreading about getting sacked but we breezed through and instead, it was Cameroon who sacked their guy. 2024 was a perfect year as we breezed through the AFCON qualifiers and made a solid start to our World Cup qualifying campaign. The two games against Gabon are going to determine who gets out of the group there. Before that though, the African Cup of Nations starts in January 2025 and the FA wants us to at least reach the final. We've beaten the likes of Morocco and Senegal comfortably so I would be a little disappointed if we don't go all the way, tbh. Jeonbuk said their interview process was over, I didn't apply for the Shenzhen job due to them being rooted to the foot of the table and then Shanghai Shenhua laughed me off by not even shortlisting my application. Time to look elsewhere then... This will likely be more of a long-term project. Atlas are languishing close to the bottom half of the table, albeit it is still quite early into the Apertura. We are in the cup (and are current holders) so that's nice. For now, the board are only asking for us to get into the preliminary round of the playoffs so 12th place is the target while I start looking into the transfer market and the club's developmental teams. Finances are in a nice shape with around 18m available for transfers and over 300k p/w extra available in the wage budget. SkiIIs Posted January 27, 2022 Share Posted January 27, 2022 Season 2021 - Tampines Rovers Started mid way through the season with the team languishing in second last spot of a 8 team league with 11 games remaining. There's no relegation system in this league so it was a bit of a free pass to get to know the players and try a few formations. My early take is that its similar to the Chinese Super League where you need to sign the best local talent and build around the 4 foreign players your allowed to register. We did ok in the remaining games and managed to climb up to 5th. Luckily enough for me the domestic cup competition is played towards the end of the season so I was able to be in charge for the whole duration. First round is a group stage of 4 with 2 teams progressing into the semis. I was drawn in the 'Group of Death' having pulled both LC Sailors and Niigata Unicorns who were both placed 1st and 2nd in the league (at the time). The other team was a non league easy beat. I managed to beat Niigat and drew with LC to second on goal different. The semi final was fixture is drawn out much to my despise and funnily enough i drew LC Sailors again. It's played over 2 legs, the first game was away where we dominated having 21 shots to 8 but still lost 3 - 1. In the return leg, again we were the better team having 2.38xG versus 0.99xG and got the 2 - 0 scoreline we richly deserved. My first cup final in just my 17th match (ignoring internationals) as manager. Up against Geylang Int and we rightfully lifted the trophy after a 3 - 1 comfortable win! Im on the board! Im hoping my tenure here will be a short one given I've only got the league to go, the Chairmen is refusing to get my badges as he's worried ill grow bigger than the club. We'll see how the transfer period goes as I'm waiting for some decent local signings to join on frees but will see what other opportunities abroad come about that i can realistically go for. Back again next season TURKISH SUPER LIG They were already top when I took over in Jan after the previous manager had left to join Leicester. INTERNATIONAL - AUSTRALIA - Comfortably Qualified for WC Brazil 50'. Well beaten by Korea which is ominous with the 'must win' Asia cup around the corner in 51' WHAT'S NEXT In short it'll be back next season to try and win the Turkish cup. SkiIIs Posted February 1, 2022 Share Posted February 1, 2022 (edited) Season 2022 - Tampines Rovers After winning the Singapore Cup last season, the goal for my first full season at the club was to win the league and further develop my credentials and reputation. I can say that I definitely achieved one of the goals with what ended up to be quite a straight forward title challenge. The biggest test was always going to be last year's champions LC Sailors. A 3 zip head to head record against them pretty much sealed the title, even though they were the only 3 games that they lost for the entire season. I havent finished the Cup games at the time of posting, but given I have already won it, it's void anyways. On the other goal, well the Board refused me to further my coaching badges so im still stuck on National C licence although the league victory and potentially some international wins with Indonesia has me at 1.5 stars now at least. Next for me is to move on since there's no realistic chance of challenging for the Asian Champions League club. I have China and Sth Korea added however early attempts to join second division clubs have been atrociously unsuccessful. Will need to add a few more lower rated leagues to continue my journey. Have had a good career in Darlington and Ipswich finishing in 2027 with FA Cup win and qualifying for EURO Cup with Ipswich. Also winning African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast. Got my first big job i June 2027. Won La Liga in my first season with Atletico Madrid and resigned after the season. Started the season with main objective being to win the CONCACAF Champions League, as well as winning the Cup MX after a disappointing attempt last time out. But it also seems like we've been entered into a whole load of other trophies. There's the Mexican Champions Trophy, the Leagues Cup (for the best teams in Mexico and USA) and the Campeones Cup (for the best Mexican and US team). We started the season strong, defeating Cruz Azul to win the Champions Trophy, and show our strength for the upcoming season. In the next international window, we ensured the Nigeria would be defending their AFCON crown. We are still with Nigeria, as haven't yet found a better country that wants my services. Planning on resigning after the 2030 World Cup and take it from there. We then won the Leagues Cup, defeating a load of US teams plus a penalty shootout against rivals Cruz Azul on the way to the title. The final was certainly anticlimactic, with two first half goals followed by a red card for Inter Miami. But more silverware in the cabinet! A week later we faced another US side, this time NY Red Bulls, in the Campeones Cup. Although we were 2-0 up before half time, and 3-1 up midway through the second half, a late goal from Evandro led to a nervy finish, with them coming forward looking for an equaliser whilst we hung on. But hang on we did, although the xG did end in their favour, as well as the possession stats! But the players did manage to win yet more silverware, and things were looking promising for out Champions League push. Not used to playing domestic rivals in a Champions League group stage, but that's how things are structured in North America. We played well across the group matches, and comfortably took top spot heading into the knockout phase (although that does only occur a few months afterwards). In the Torneo Apertura, we had a great league stage and carried that momentum into the playoffs, ending up defending our title quite comfortably. A 2-0 first leg victory at home against CF Monterrey allowed us to play defensively at their's, preferring to pass the ball around the back than try and create something to score from. A low xG game, as well not many highlights to feast on. Went to AFCON 2029 to defend our crown. They doubted we could do it with an aging squad, but we were so close. Did struggle in the knockouts, needing extra time to see off hosts South Africa and penalties against Mali. After a tight game against Burkina Faso, where we had to manage the player's fitness to see out the game and have something in the tank for the final, we still went into it with a tired squad. We took a first half lead through striker Victor Osimhen and, surprisingly, looked to be holding on for the win, before Nicolas Jackson equalised for Senegal in the 84th minute to send the game to extra time. This was just 30 minutes more football that our players had nothing to contribute towards. They managed to score again in the 95th minute, and we never looked liked pushing for an equaliser. They even had a very late penalty to seal things off, but the save from Okoye did nothing to inspire a very very late equaliser. Not sure how good the squad will be for the World Cup in a year and a half, but I plan on resigning after that, as I have taken this team as far as I can. The Champions League knockouts were an interesting mix bag of results. We started with a simple tie against Honduran outfit Motagua, and after the 6-0 first leg win, didn't even bother playing the first team stars in the return leg. We then played Club America again in this campaign, and the 6-4 aggregate scoreline certainly makes the tie sound closer than it really was! CF Monterrey didn't prove to be a stumbling block, not showing the kind of fight they put in to reach the semi finals (as well as the Torneo Apertura playoff final). And then the final, which was a rollercoaster ride of emotion to watch. A 1-1 first half was followed by a tame second. Pumas scored in the first half of extra time, and it was only a late equaliser from Mexican legend Raul Jimenez that took the tie to penalties. In the shootout, they missed their second spot kick, and the Tigres players held their nerves to win it 5-4, and with it the CONCACAF Champions League! Jimenez played so well that my inbox was flooded with mail praising him for his performance throughout the campaign. I had planned on resting first team players for the Torneo Clausura to prioritise the Champions League, but having performed so well in numerous first legs, we were able to play them more domestically than originally planned, allowing us to push for the second domestic title as well. A bye in the first round was followed by a tie, again, against Cruz Azul. After losing 2-0 in the first leg, we played so much better at home, winning 3-0 and keeping our hopes alive. Next, we played out two 1-1 draws with CF Monterrey, and expecting penalties, was surprised to learn that we had gone through as the higher seeded team! Not gonna complain with that. We played Atletico San Luis, another team that had enjoyed the higher seeding rule to get through two rounds, for the title. The tie was very one sided, and we ran out 4-1 winners. We ended the season having lifted 6 different trophies across the campaign! (Shame that only one counted for the challenge.) The only piece missing is the Copa MX, where we were dumped out in the knockout phase after struggling to second in our group. Probably means that going to have to stay for one more season. The team is so good that worth just getting it down now, over leaving and having to find something later down the line. Getting kudos for my achievements, both domestically and internationally! With no good opportunities arising, definitely thinking of staying put for now. And then along came the Club World Cup, but that didn't go too well... Although both games were close, losing 2-1 to PSG and 1-0 to Santos, we did lost both and finish bottom of our three team group. Guess best to expect to win this once I'm managing a big team in Europe. But was worth the try! Not sure next season will be quite as trophy laden, but will see how it goes. Loving my time in Mexico, but will definitely be leaving after this upcoming campaign. The top teams weren't in it. It's possible that's changed now. I think I read someone saying on this thread that it had, but @avzbruvz, it might be worth checking the last version of the cup, and checking how many top division sides actually take part. If your team is in it, it does count. It's the one cup we make an exception to the 'all top division teams' rules. If someone has played in mexico this season and they're sure all teams take part, I can remove that part of the third post which says Quote Mexico -The Mexican Cup also counts towards the challenge (as the cup). Not all the top division clubs (the ones in continental competition) are in the Mexican Cup, but it's the only domestic cup in Mexico. (Something to bear in mind though is that, if you take over at one of the better Mexican sides, they may not be in this cup, in which case, you won't be able to win it. SkiIIs Posted February 1, 2022 Share Posted February 1, 2022 After many unsuccessful applications and interviews, i managed to land a role with the Leopards in the Chinese First Division. Pretty chuffed with the appointment and looking forward to a decent stint in China with the long term aim of winning the Asian Champions League. The Board's expectation is to finish mid table, with the league about to commence in a couple months and a full transfer period to play with. I also for the fun of it threw my hat in the ring for the Ivory Cost national team and you would never guess why but for some reason they offered me the role. I immediately terminated my contract with the Indonesia National team even though we had qualified for the Asian Cup, i dont think we realistically had a chance Coincidentally, the AFCON is held this year and we are the home nation! I did lose my starting goalkeeper though - Desire Kouame became first choice as a 17 year old last year but switched to playing for Germany U21s a few months before the AFCON so Gbohouo has been reinstated as first choice at the age of 36. The midfield is definitely where we are strongest with a world class Kessie and a number of excellent players in Gbamin, Akpa-Akpro, Traore and Fofana while Zaha, Boga, Diallo and Pepe are all well-suited to inside forward roles. Our only pre-tournament friendly saw us beat Switzerland 4-1 at home in early January. Group stage Spoiler Ivory Coast 5-1 Equatorial Guinea: We made the best possible start to the competition as Seb Haller scored a hattrick as we racked up 34 shots (16 on target) to their 5. Uganda 2-7 Ivory Coast: Rotated the team a little for this game with the final match against Ghana in mind but it didn't seem to matter. Kouame started up front and scored his own hattrick with Kessie coming off the bench to get two for himself. Ghana 0-1 Ivory Coast: The scoreline doesn't tell the full story. We were dominant but needed a Haller penalty to win and only had an xG of 2.24 from 24 shots (despite having that penalty). Second Round (if applicable) Spoiler Egypt 1-3 Ivory Coast: An awful draw to get after topping your group. Kouame put us ahead early on but Egypt equalised in the 12th minute. Pepe missed a penalty which had me a little worried but Diallo scored soon after being subbed on for him and Zaha struck a late third to make sure. Quarter Final (if applicable) Spoiler Cape Verde 3-4 Ivory Coast: An utterly wild game. Cape Verde had beaten us at home in 2023 and I was a little apprehensive going into the game. After we went ahead through Kouame, they struck either side of half-time to take the lead. Kouame then struck twice to complete his second hattrick of the tournament only for Cape Verde to equalise in the 90th minute. Incredibly enough, Kouame scored his 4th two minutes into injury time to send us through. Semi Final (if applicable) Spoiler Nigeria 0-3 Ivory Coast: The scoreline belies how close this game was. Iheanacho missed a penalty for Nigeria right after we went ahead through Diallo in a closely fought first half. Haller's double right after the break gave us breathing space though and made the second half a lot more comfortable. Final (if applicable) Spoiler Ivory Coast 3-0 Tunisia: A superb display to round it all off. Zaha and Diallo's first half goals had us on our way and Pepe scored a late third as we racked up 32 shots against our opponents. Tunisia, by contrast, failed to even manage a shot. I've had one or two great attempts at this save and I'll hopefully complete it this time round. I have been keeping an eye on the thread and itching to give it a go but didn't want to let my other save fade in to the background.
